Chapter 16 In Court

The evidence was presented in the murders of Mr. and Mrs, Keller. The defendant Mary Beth Keller sat there with a blank stare.  She knew the police were onto her.

The jury listened as the police gave their statements and then as the neighbor, Lydia, Lydia's ex-boyfriend gave theirs. Each gave testimony to what happened from their perspective and was able to prove their whereabouts at the time of the brutal killings of Mr. and Mrs. Keller.

The judge listened closely as well. He had to admit the jury had to make a big decision here, to declare the defendant guilty and declare her worthy of punishment for the crimes, or to declare her innocent and let her go.

The court trial lasted for four and a half months. It was a rough case. The court made sure all the facts were presented properly to make it easier for the jury to determine the outcome of the case.

At the end of the trial, the jury found the defendant, Mary Beth Keller guilty of murder in the first degree in the case of Mr. Keller and of murder in the second degree when it came to the case of Mrs. Keller. Lydia sat there wide-eyed, shocked at what she heard. She could not believe it. She refused to believe it. Her sister was guilty of murder.

Mary Beth was taken away to prison and she did not seem the least remorseful. She sighed. She seemed relieved to have the trial over. She also felt bad for the jurors who had to deal with the trial in the first place.

Lydia lived in a small condo. She watched as the city tore down the old house which had been condemned.  The dog was long gone. Dead from old age and buried. She was alone in the world. At least she still had her friends.

The end...

Not all stories have happy endings.
