Chapter 40
The trip back to Velder had taken more time than when they first left it. Ilphas had offered to take them back herself since Sael was temporarily out of commission for the time being. Synn went along with them to help Ilphas for their journey back.
"We're almost there!" (y/n) said as she looked out the window. It was just himself and (y/n) within their own carriage. Add was relaxing with his eyes closed as he waited for them to make their final stop. "Wait, isn't that Dynamo?!"
"What?" Add was at the window to take a look faster than it took him to pull up his holographic screens. Sure enough, Dynamo was indeed hovering towards the window. "What is he doing out here...?" The carriages stopped shortly after they spotted their floating nasod companion. Add and (y/n) got out to make sense of the situation.
"Master Add! Master (Y/n)!" The nasod zipped around them like an excited puppy.
"What is that thing?" Ilphas asked. She and Synn had come to check out the nasod as well.
"This is Dynamo. He is also my assistant, but I had him stay behind to take care of things while I was gone," Add explained. He looked over to where Dynamo had chosen to remain at his side. "Why are you all the way out here?"
"You crossed into my range. Your vitals were on display again. Was it not the correct option to come here and greet you?" (Y/n) laughed while Add simply shook his head.
"You're almost like...a fairy?" Synn determined.
"Dynamo is not a fairy," Add growled. "He's a highly advanced nasod capable of even time travel if he had enough energy for it!" It frustrated him that he couldn't say that aloud to completely get ride of the foolish fairy allegation.
"Well he floats like one, but he looks more like those things you have with you all the time. But he talks, so he acts like a fairy." Synn wasn't going to drop the idea any time soon.
(Y/n) stepped in before Add could make any further corrections. "We'll be in town soon. I think it's best if we continue on until we get there. You two are more than welcome to stay for the night. We have room."
"It's getting dark. We should hurry," Ilphas agreed.
Dynamo accompanied Add and (y/n) to their carriage and rode with them. At first, the little nasod could not stop himself from giving every kind of report he could think of. Under normal circumstances, Add would have found this annoying, but it was good to hear Dynamo's voice again. He told them about how Raven actually stuck to his medication in their absence. He detailed how he had spent the days monitoring Add's remaining patients as well, but didn't get to finish before the carriage stopped again.
Ilphas came to them for directions because she had forgotten how to get back to their house, but they weren't far from it. In no time, they were all standing outside the large familiar home.
"You're back early." Raven was waiting for them outside the door. "Thought you said you'd be gone for three months."
"Yeah, I thought you'd have at least picked up a new skill or two while I was gone," Add shot back. "Still the same as ever. Old and annoying."
"Your arm is so cool!! Can I touch it?" Synn almost shouted. Ilphas smacked him. "Ow! What was that for?!"
"Who's the kid?" Raven asked.
"This is Synn," (y/n) introduced. "This is his sister Ilphas. They're going to stay the night until morning before they head back to Eldemyr." She turned back the the elves. "This is Raven. He's family." Add noticed her and Ilphas share an unspoken communication. He was surprised that the two of them were even getting along considering how they started off. The trip back was filled with no shortage of surprises when the two of them interacted.
"Don't stand out here then. Everyone inside," Raven said.
"If I remember correctly, this is my house. When did you start giving orders," Add retorted.
"It's not your house again until your three months are over. Don't forget who you left in charge. If you want to stay on vacation, you'll want people to think you aren't back yet."
"That's got nothing to do with you giving me orders," Add complained as he followed Raven into the house.
"Would you like me to take our guests to their rooms, Master Add?" Dynamo offered. Add merely gave him a nod. When Ilphas and Synn were down the hall, Add looked back at (y/n) and Raven.
"Was it that bad?" Raven asked.
"It was." (Y/n) confirmed. "We ran into something that shouldn't have even been there, but Add rook care of it as usual."
"I'm just going to say no next time," Add muttered. He recalled having to incapacitate Sael without harming him too much. Then there was the choice he had to make regarding the source of the Alterasia. He shook the thought from his mind. As a doctor, he hadn't been able to make that decision. He wouldn't have been able to face (y/n) if he had simply done what Kassias had intended for her to do from the beginning. That had still been an elf just as Sael had said. Alive for the most part, but an anomaly nevertheless. Curing her on the spot with minimal materials to work with and fighting her at the same time had been quite the ordeal.
"Add?" (Y/n)'s voice snapped him from his thoughts. He found himself looking her in the eyes. Her hand was on his shoulder.
"You said we'd celebrate when we got home," he said to change the topic.
"Is that what you've been thinking about this entire time?" she asked with a smile. She let him go and headed towards the kitchen. "Hey Raven, your on kitchen duty with me tonight. We're gonna prepare a feast," she called.
"Food!" Synn could be heard yelling down the hall. "Human houses are so cool!!"
"No running Synn! This isn't how you act! What's gotten into you?" Ilphas yelled at the boy.
Add didn't even bother to stop them either. It was more lively than he was used to, but he'd let it slide this time.
"You did good, kid." Raven walked past him. "Maybe I'll stop calling you that from now on."
"Whatever, Raven." The reply had the man stopping in his tracks for a moment, but he only glanced back at Add before heading into the kitchen to assist (y/n) with whatever mess Synn had probably caused.
"Dynamo," Add quietly called. His loyal companion approached from around the corner. "Open a new experiment file. Label it 'Overmind'. Keep it separate from the rest in an encrypted folder."
"It will be done, Master Add." Dynamo tilted to the side. "Is there a reason you don't want Master (Y/n) to know about the file?"
Add shook his head. "I just don't want to trouble her with the details. They won't be anything she'll need to worry about from now on. Enough questioning. Let's go lend a hand."
They entered the kitchen with where everyone else was preparing what would become on of Add's most memorable nights.
