Chapter 13: Retracing our steps
"Hey, what's taking you so long?!" I asked, knocking on Kaori's door.
"Shut up, Kousei!!" Kaori said, angrily.
I sighed deeply. Since we found out that she only has a little time left, we've decided to spend a lot of time together before she leaves. I'm a bit nervous though, especially when she began calling it a.... 'date'.
I don't know what she's doing inside her room and I think she's maybe dressing up or something. Girls are really hard to understand.
I wore a normal shirt with 'Practise Period' written on it and jeans and I only changed within minutes.
I knocked on the door again and....
"HAVE SOME PATIENCE, BAKA-KOUSEI!!!!!!" she shouted at the top of her lungs.
"Sorry," I said before going to the music room.
I began to keep all the music sheets in alphabetical order in the shelf and then, I heard a voice which I know and love.
"Uh... Kousei?" Kaori called nervously.
I looked over to her direction and my eyes widened in shock. She was wearing the same pink frock she wore when we first met but her hair was left opened.
"YOU PERV!!! QUIT STARING!!!"
I looked away, blushing madly. Why is she so beautiful?! She's my heart beat really fast that I think I'm gonna die of a heart attack!!!
I came over to me and held my hand, pulling me towards the door.
"Can we walk instead of going by the cycle?" I asked, letting her guide me to the door.
Kaori smiled (MY POOR HEART!). "I was about to ask the same thing," she said.
I smiled brightly back.
"Sorry I shouted at you," she said, holding the back of her neck as she smiled nervously.
"Nah. I'm used to it already," I said, opening the door.
"Yeah?"
I gave her a nod. We began to walk on the side of the road and for some reason, she wasn't letting go of my hand. Not that I hate it but I feel butterflies in my stomach because of it.
I changed the way we're holding hands by intertwining my fingers with hers. Kaori gave me a glance but I just returned a smile.
"So, where are we going?" I asked.
"I don't know. I thought you knew," she said.
"What do we do?" I asked.
"I know!" she said. "Let's retrace our steps!!"
"That's genius," I said.
"Gee, thanks," she said, proudly.

"Oh my god!!!" I said, shocked.
"I know right?" Kaori said.
We went to the place we first met, the park in front of Towa Hall. It's completely different from how it was in spring. Now that it's winter, there weren't that many children playing innthe park.
Kaori let go of my hand and to the dorm in the middle of the park. She removed her shoes began to climb to the top and stood there.
"Wow!!!" she exclaimed happily. "C'mere Kousei!!!" She gestured me to climb up.
I hope I don't fall down and embarrassed myself. I removed my shoes too and began to climb up. Luckily, I didn't fall and I stood beside her.
"You're right," I said. "It feels good to stand here."
Some kids began to gather around the dorm when they saw us, I mean me, standing here.
"Hey Onee-chan!!" One of the kids asked. "Is she your girlfriend?!" He pointed at Kaori.
I turned to her in shock. "They can see you?!" I asked. She shrugged. I turned to the kid. "You can see her?"
"You're acting weird, Onee-chan," one girl said.
"You guys wanna play a game?" Kaori asked, happily and also to change the topic.
"YEAH!!" the kids cheered.
She gave me a smile before getting down and I got down after.
"Who wants to play hide and seek?" she asked, cheerfully.
"Me!! Me!!!!" The kids said, raising their hands, trying to get her attention.
Kaori turned to me with a glare. "You're embarrassing me!!!" she whisper shouted, angrily.
I raised my hand too and she turned her attention back to the kids.
"Who wants to be 'it'?" She asked.
Everyone lowered our hands but one little boy with a cap still remained the same posture.
"Can I start?" he asked.
"Sure!" Kaori said, smiling brightly. "You can use the dorm for counting and make sure you count till twenty."
The boy began to count and everyone scattered. Kaori took my hand and hid behind a slide which is facing the boy who's still counting. She had a smile plastered on her face and I knew she was having fun.
"Shh." She placed her finger on my lips when I wanted to tell her something. She giggled at my reaction and then pulled my hand and ran towards the dorm, eventhough the boy who's 'it' was still there. I guess she's taking it easy on the kid and I should say, she's incredible with kids.
"There you are!!!" the boy exclaimed as he came chasing us.
The park was filled with the laughter of the children, Kaori's and mine. We were running around the park and having the time of our lives. A while later, the parents of each kids came, one at a time till everyone left but us.
I looked at my watch and the time and it was 12:49.
"I'm hungry," Kaori said.
"Me too," I said.
"But we're not done yet," she said, happily. She took my hand and ran towards Towa Hall. She had this smile plastered to her face which as bright as the sun. We went in and everyone began to stare at me and whisper when we passed by.
"That's Arima-kun, the pianist."
"Do you remember his last performance?"
"He cried, right?"
Kaori turned to me with a concern look.
"You know they're talking about you, right?" she said.
"Yep," I said in a low voice.
We went to watched an orchestral concert and for like the whole thing, we remained quiet the whole time since we were observing them play, carefully. I did glance at her though and I should say, she's a dedicated musician.
After that, we went and ate the same thing we ordered from the cafe we we went to before, even if she begged me to buy a chocolate ball. We then went to the bridge and went under it. I remember telling her that she was my reason to play as fireflies surrounded all around us.
In this whole 'retracing our steps' thing, I was blushing madly the whole time because Kaori was holding my hand the whole time, even during the concert and even while eating! I know no one can see her or anything but for me, it was really nerve-wreaking.
"Can we jump from the bridge?" Kaori asked me, excitably.
"Aren't we gonna somewhere else after that?" I asked.
"Nah," she said. "This is more than enough." She smiled brightly.
"Alright," I said. "But I'm not gonna."
"Don't make me punch you," she said, angrily. "You must. If you're not gonna jump I'll push you out of it." She walked to the top of the bridge, pulling me along since she was holding. "Life is never fun if you don't take risks."
"Fine," I mumbled sadly.
"What was that? I didn't hear you at first," she asked, teasingly.
"I know you heard it the first time," I said.
She laughed. We stopped walking when we reached the middle of the bridge.
"On three," she said, looking forward. "We jump."
Fear began to form inside me. "T-Together?" I asked, stammering.
"Yes, baka," she replied, laughing. "Ok, ready? One....."
I took a deep breathe and exhaled.
"Two....."
I looked forward and a smile formed on my face.
"THREE!!!!!"
We ran forward quickly and jumped off the railings. The wind felt really good on my face but I was still screaming in fear as I fell. Kaori was howling happily, not letting go of my hand. We fell on the water with a splash and I saw a blurry image of her face close to mine when we were underwater. We reached up to the surface began laughing a lot.
"Now that was fun!!" Kaori said, smiling brightly.
"Totally!!" I said, smiling.
"Thank goodness your glasses didn't fall this time," she said, laughing.
I shivered a bit. "The water is colder than before," I said.
"I can't feel a thing 'cause I'm dead," she said. "C'mon Kousei, it's winter. Of course the water will be cold. Wait!! You'll catch a cold!!!"
"It's okay," I said, casually. "Let's stay here a bit longer."
"NO!!" she said, firmly. "I don't want you to be sick because of me!"
"Ok, I lied. It's freezing here," I said. "Let's go."
"Yeah."

Kaori's POV
I took a warm water bath and came down stairs. Nothing's better than a warm bath after a cold one. I went downstairs and saw Kousei, secretly eating canelés in the kitchen.
"HEY!!!" I shouted, running to him. "YOU BOUGHT THAT FOR ME!!!"
"Yeah, with my money!" he said.
"Gimme some!!" I said, extending my hands forward.
"Here," he said, giving me the bits that were left in the paper bag.
"YOU CHEAT!!!!! HOW DARE YOU EAT MY FAVOURITE FOOD?!!!"
"I ate it because I was hungry," he said in a low voice.
I placed my hands on my hips. "Well, that's just selfish," I said.
"I ordered home delivery and only ate this for the time being."
I laughed nervously at my embarrassing act. "Oh, silly me."
Kousei threw the empty paper bag in the trash and I began to think about telling Kousei about what I did. How I came to him and why I'm gonna leave. Should I tell him or keep it myself? I'm not sure.
"What did you order?" I asked, trying to break the silence between us.
"Katsudons (Pork Cutlet Bowls)," he replied. "I eat it frequently and I just thought you might wanna try it."
"HA!!" I said, loudly. "I even make 'em. Kousei c'mon. Which Japanese person hasn't tried katsudons?"
"You cook?!" His eyes were wide.
"My parents are bakers," I said, proudly. "I can even bake a cake if I want to. But the thing is.... I'm lazy when it comes to those things."
"I tried once and Watari, Tsubaki and I ended up with food poisoning the next day," he said, pouting. "I never tried since."
I laughed. "Now that's funny," I said.
There was silence after that and I could see he was still sad because he knows I'm gonna leave. But I have to tell him.
"Kousei," I said, trying to sound calm. "Do you know how I got here?"
"No, I wanted to ask you though," he said.
"I... actually.... ran away," I said, breaking eye contact so that he won't see my face. "Some people, who died without spending enough time with their special ones, get a chance to go as ghost type thingy-s and go see them. I didn't actually get a chance and I wanted to tell you how I feel and..." My face turned crimson. "And so, I ran away. Somehow. The people, who get to go, gets like about 2 months time to be with that person, even if you're not visible to other people and I really should've waited for my turn 'cause I could be with you longer. I didn't care about that then and now I regret it." Tears began to fill my eyes, making my vision blurry. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner."
I felt a pair of arms around me and before I knew it, I was in his embrace.
"It's alright," he said. "You told me now, didn't you?"
The tears that threatened to fall down, fell and I cried, hugging him back tightly. My grip was on the back of his shirt and his warmth was really calming.
"They're coming for me, Kousei," I said, sobbing. "I heard them warn me."
Kousei remained silent and continued to carress my hair to calm me down.
"You'll get hurt if I don't return," I said, worried. "I...."
I was interrupted by him as he kissed my lips. Tears began to fall down my cheeks even more, even if I had my eyes closed. I can't leave him yet. I need more time. I want to be with him more, eventhough he won't remember later. He broke the kiss, leaving us both gasping for air and then he cupped my face, wiping my tears with his thumbs.
"Let's just wait and see what happens," he said, giving me a half smile.
I gave him a nod and forced a smile.
"Ok," I said, concealing my sadness with my smile.
I'm sure I'm gonna leave.
