It was the summer of 1999 and Josuke Higashikata had only one thing left he had to do before school started again in a few days.

You may be asking, what was it?  Well, that would be confessing his feelings to his crush. He would have done it sooner but... well his crush happened to be his bestie Okuyasu Nijimura, so it, shocking to no one, hard to just say how he felt.

"Not to mention the guy has only had feelings for women.  What if I confess to him and he laughs at me? That would totally ruin our friendship!" He thought out loud to himself.  That was true, the past five people his crush was into was a woman.  But that wasn't going to stop him.

"I need to tell him now before it's too late.  I mean, what if we end up going to different schools... What if he doesn't decide to go to college and then I'm by myself?!"  He pondered before getting up and doing his hair.  Since it was summer, he decided on not wearing his school uniform, well, other than the yellow tank top he wore underneath it.   "Now all I gotta do is fine Oku and tell him how I feel."

Unfortunately for him, he saw him seated at the cafe, writing something.  "What's that he's writing?" He thought as he approached.  However, before he could see, Okuyasu covered the paper.  "Oi, Josuke, you know you shouldn't just go up to me like that!" The other teen stated as blush came on his face.  "Ah, so what are you writing there?"

"Nothing, don't worry about it." Okuyasu spoke, defensive but blushing more.  "Ah, it's a love letter isn't, y'know, love letters didn't help you last time you tried."

"Yeah, but I didn't know she had a boyfriend.  Anyway, it's not for the same girl."  Okuyasu stated.  "Oh?" The pompadoured teen asked.  "He's into another girl...? Why am I shocked? He's ever only been into girls why would he change his preference now?" He thought, chickening out of telling his feelings.

"Hey Josuke, you feeling okay? Look kinda down."  The other teen commented.  "Oh, yeah, I'm fine, don't worry.  Um, I better get going.  Y'know do some last-minute things before school starts." Josuke stated as he left the cafe.  "I can't believe I chickened out like that, but I mean, it's clear he's not into men, so confessing will only lead to a broken friendship."  He thought, though as much as he wanted to keep the friendship thriving, he still felt a little heart break.

Though, he thought about something.  About Okuyasu writing a love letter.  "I mean, I'll just write my feelings anonymously and give them to him.  He won't find who it is, and I won't lose a friend." He stated as he got home.

"Josuke, you're back?" Tomoko, his mother, asked.

"Huh?"

"I mean I heard your little monologue earlier about you confessing to your crush.  Did it go badly?" She asked.  "Nah, I didn't even confess to hi- them, to them."  Josuke stated, trying to cover up that he's gay.  His mother just looked at him.  "Josuke I know you're gay.  I just can't believe you wussed out."

"I mean he was writing a love letter to another girl it's not like I can just tell him how I feel when he's actively not interested!" He defended himself.  "But like, I still have feelings for him that need to be resolved so... I'm going to write him a letter." He added before going to his room.

Once in his bedroom he looked for a pen and paper.  "Alright, now to write... But what to write? I should complement him, and tell him what he means to me but... There's just so much to write!" He groaned as he collected his thoughts.  Once he did it was smooth sailing.  "Okay now to deliver it! Hopefully he's still at the cafe so I can be sneaky about it."

And with that Josuke left the home and ran to his bestie/crush's house.  However, when he was about to put the mail in the mailbox...

"Huh? Josuke, what are you doing here?"

Okuyasu was approaching him.  "Oh, uh, hey, Oku, I accidentally got your mail."  Josuke stammered, trying to think of an excuse.  "My mail?  I didn't think we'd get mail." Okuyasu stated.  "I mean it's addressed to you so."

Without another question, Okuyasu ripped open the letter.  "Dear Nijimura-Kun, I have been feeling this way for some time now.   I think you're funny and handsome, and generally a great guy.  I love you, truly and fully, please consider me to be yours.  Signed... J.H.? Who could that be?" He read.

"Ah man who knows-"

"I need to know so I can turn them down." The other teen stated, shocking the other teen.  "What? You're turning down the sender? I mean they seem like a cool person."

"Yeah, they seem really nice, but I have feelings for someone else." He stated closing the letter and saving it for later.  "Ah... Right..." Josuke stated about to turn away.  "Wait, Josuke, are you sure you're okay?"  Oku asked.  " I...  You know what... No, I'm not okay... I mean I know who wrote that letter and they might be upset if you reject them."  Josuke stated, though the other teen was not getting it through his head.  "Why do you care if they get upset-?"

"Because it's me, I wrote that letter.  Clearly it doesn't matter because you like someone else."  Josuke interrupted.  He then realized he just confessed his feelings.  "I... I gotta go..." Josuke stammered before running off, not wanting to be humiliated by the rejection.

He then proceeded to lock himself in his room to willow in his sadness.  He didn't even bother telling his mom about it.  "Why did I think that was a good idea...?" He thought curled up on his bed, tears forming in his eyes.

After about an hour, Josuke get out of his depressive episode.  "I mean maybe he'll be okay with it,  I mean he basically turned me down so, having feelings for him now would be pointless." He stated, rubbing his red puffy eyes.

As he got up though, he heard a knock at his front door.  "Huh? Who could that be?  It couldn't be Okuyasu, why would he be here?" He thought as he answered the door.  And to his surprise, and horror, it was indeed Okuyasu.  "Josuke I-" The dumber teen stated as he looked at the state of Josuke.  "Um is now a bad time?"

"I... I'm sorry..." Josuke started.  "Huh? Why? I just-"

"I fell in love with you when you clearly weren't into me, or just men in general.  I mean I saw the pattern I just... I thought I'd be the acceptation... I still want to be friends, of course, but y'know making a big spectacle outta being into someone who wouldn't like me back was dumb on my part."  Josuke stated, trying to make it seem like it was okay, but... he had fresh tears in his eyes.  "Anyway uhm, why'd you come over?  Did something happen when you tried giving your letter?" He asked.

"Uh... I didn't give it to them yet... But speaking of letters, I got your mail too." Okuyasu stated as he handed Josuke the letter.  Josuke opened it.  "Hi Josuke! I was wondering if you were free romantically speaking, for I have fallen in lice- in love with you. This may be shocking since I never was into men until now, but you made me see that they can be cute too. love, O.N."

Josuke sniffled a little.  It was Okuyasu's handwriting, but it was confusing.  "This has to be a joke, either that or he's just trying to make me feel better."  Josuke thought.  "Um... Do you not like it?"

"No, I mean, it's something.  When did you write this?" Josuke asked.  "Wha- how did you know it was me?!"

"I mean, it's in your handwriting, not to mention not many people from our school have the initials O.N.  Anyway, answer the question."

"I've been writing this all day.  I was trying to write but I couldn't get the words down." Okuyasu admitted.  "Wait so that letter you were writing at the cafe-"

"It was for you.  I didn't want it to seem too obvious since I didn't know if you liked me like that.  And it's my first time actually falling for a guy so... Yeah." Okuyasu admitted.  "Okuyasu... You could have just asked."

"I was nervous, okay? I mean asking your bestie what his preference is isn't the easiest thing to do.  Especially when you like them."

Josuke and Okuyasu paused, both blushing hard.  "Damn, I mean I guess you have a point.  I mean that's why I waited until now to tell you how I felt." Josuke said.  "Um... Wait if I like you, and You like me, uh, can we be boyfriends?"

"Uh, yeah! Of course, man I can't believe I didn't say anything until now!" Josuke stated pulling Okuyasu into a hug.  "I love you so much Oku."

"I Love you too, Josuke!"
