Chapter 2 ~ When Spoken Tongues Speak
Everyone stared in disbelief as (Y/n) fiddled with her fingers nervously. Steven was the first to speak up. "You...you can talk to...Rose?" he asked carefully. "Like...in your mind?"
"Yes." (Y/n) replied, shifting her gaze uncomfortably towards her feet, toes digging in the sand.
"Let's talk about this inside the temple." Connie suggested, earning agreed, silent, nods from the rest of the group. The only people who seemed unfazed by the news seemed to have been Lapis and Peridot but that perhaps was because they never met the famous gem and had rarely heard of Steven talking about her.
Peridot walked beside (Y/n) as they slowly made their journey towards the temple. "So...you can communicate with Rose Quartz." Peridot concluded. (Y/n) twisted her head from side to side to catch a glimpse at Lapis and Peridot's reactions, unfazed and unchanged, they seemed normal.
"Yes..." (Y/n) agreed, "Rose wanted me to tell you now."
"I wonder why not before?" Lapis mumbled in thought.
"I don't know. But she felt now was the right time..."
"Did she say why?" Peridot asked. (Y/n) shrugged.
"She has a favour to ask. She told me that she is in need of something from them." The explanation was brief and puzzling, no clues piecing together what it all meant.
"Well isn't the simple solution to ask her? You can speak with her in your mind correct? Just ask her." Lapis pointed out, stepping aside to allow the two to walk inside the house first. They were the last of the group to enter, Lapis lazily bumping the door shut with her hip.
"It feels wrong to ask." (Y/n) pointed out, "I'm sure she has her reasons. But she shouldn't have to tell."
"Um, but (Y/n)...they literally didn't know this for 34 years or something and I think they deserve some sort of answer." Peridot argued. But before (Y/n) could reply, she was seated down on the couch and faced towards everyone.
"(Y/n)." Garnet began almost instantly, "Why haven't you told us this information before?" (Y/n) couldn't tell if the fusion was mad or secretly excited but either way, the question felt pressuring.
"I...she asked me not to tell...until today." The answer was short but effective in causing Pearl's mouth to over flow with questions.
"But why?" She began, "After all these year...does she not want to speak with us?" Her eyes widened as she grasped Amethyst tightly, "Did we do something wrong?!"
"Woah, calm down P, I'm sure Rose had a reason... even though it does hurt that she didn't try communicating through Steven..."
"Yeah." Steven agreed in thought, Peridot eyed Garnet curiously as the gem came to her final conclusion.
"Rose didn't always tell us what's going on in her mind. We have to respect that."
"But Garnet!" Pearl insisted, "34 years may seem relatively small and insignificant to us but that's also Steven's entire life span up until now!"
"I hate to be interfering but Pearl's right! This involves all of you... and you deserve some recognition." Lapis spoke up, her voice flat and uninterested, obviously not really caring if she had just interrupted something important.
"I think the answer is obvious." Peridot emphasised the "I" part, causing Connie to frown.
"You do?" She questioned curiously.
"Yeah...Why would Rose Quartz communicate through Steven only for you guys to ruin it – I don't meant to insult you but one can assume that when it comes to new things, gems try to go back and fix it so that things were like they used to be." Peridot summarized.
"That...sorta makes sense?" Amethyst agreed.
"She's right." Garnet realised, "If we even knew there was a chance that Rose was inside of Steven... we would have certainly tried to get her back."
"And that would have killed Steven." Pearl trembled guiltily, she straightened her composure before sighing heavily and continuing to explain, "I nearly tried to pull Steven's gem away when he was a baby...I stopped because I knew that Rose wanted things to be that way but if we knew she could talk to him... I might have just done it..."
"You guys shouldn't feel guilty." Lapis said, eyeing the tense expressions on everyone's faces, "All gems resort to 'resetting prior to problems'...it's like a part of being a gem."
"It IS a part of being a gem." Peridot concluded, "When gems are made, they are taught to try and fix an issue to a point before a problem was created. That way they learn trial and error."
"It shouldn't matter about the past anyways." (Y/n) piped up after her long period of silence, "No matter how hard we try, it can't be altered and if we refuse to move on, then the future will be filled with nothing but sadness."
Garnet turned her head to face (Y/n), nodding slowly to show approval. "(Y/n) is right, we should move on, what matters is that we have a way of communicating with Rose now...agreed?" The question was directed towards Pearl, Amethyst, Steven and Connie who had all began nodding in thought.
"Yes, let's move on and focus on the even bigger question here." Connie said. "Why does Rose want to suddenly speak with us?" she looked at her daughter expectantly, patiently waiting for an answer.
"Well..." (Y/n) began, "I don't know exactly what it is she wants, but Rose is in need of a favour from you all. It sounds pretty important by the looks of things." Garnet placed both of her hands on either sides of the girl's arms, looking at her as (Y/n) tried to guess where she should be staring. In the end, she chose to just look at the visors on the fusion's face, questioning the sudden close interaction.
"Ask her (Y/n)." Garnet requested, "Tell her that we are willing to help her." (Y/n) nodded before smiling.
"Okay... just a second." She mumbled, her eye lids sliding closed to surround themselves in a moment of pitch black.
The world around her began to form quickly, a pink fluffy cloud setting filled her sight. It was as if they were standing on clouds, clouds with mass that is because according to Peridot, clouds were just balls of cool air.
And then she appeared, mesmerising and tall, Rose bent down and scooped the girl up, petting her hair softly before humming a soft turn. "Rose... what's that song you are humming?" she asked interestedly. Rose stopped humming and playing with her locks of hair and answered.
"It's a catchy song huh?" she grinned, "It's the song Greg sang at the concert where we first met... but something else is on you mind, have you told the others yet?" (Y/n) nodded.
"I have...and they are willing to help you...what is it that you want of them?" Rose bent down and cupped her hand around her mouth, whispering unknown words to the girl, pulling away the moment she was done. "Are you sure?" she asked.
"Yes...the guilt has been grieving me greatly, it is my fault she is the way she is and I want her to be happy." Rose replied.
"Dad isn't going to like it." (Y/n) mumbled.
"No one is going to like it." Rose said in agreement, "But it has to be done."
"I know it does but... we could get hurt."
"What you lack in strength, you make up for in number." Rose said quietly, will you promise to at least try...for me?" she asked. (Y/n) looked at the cloud room they sat in before looking at her grandmother with determination. She nodded her head sharply.
"Okay." She said, "I'll try." Rose nodded in approval before placing a hand on top of the girl's eyes, manually closing them and allowing darkness to consume her once more as she travelled back to the world of reality at which she lived in.
She felt her body siting peacefully in the couch as she opened her eyelids, colour and light pouring in, the first person she saw being Garnet. "You're back." Garnet stated.
"(Y/n)! What is it that Rose wants?" Connie urged. (Y/n) shook her head, already bracing herself for the inevitable uproar from her family.
"I spoke with her and I know exactly what to do." (Y/n) began, "But you must promise not to get upset." Her final words caused everyone to exchange looks of worry and confusion.
"What do you mean?" Peridot asked. (Y/n) closed her eyes and squeezed them shut before opening them and taking a deep breath to steady herself.
"What does Rose need?" Garnet asked. (Y/n) looked at the fusion, who probably already knew what was yet to come. And with that in mind, she spoke what she had planned to say ever since she heard the words for herself.
"Rose Quartz wishes for Jasper to be redeemed."
