For Someone So Cold (Modern AU)

It was the annual junior and senior ski trip. Practically everyone went, all because of the new girl in town. Elsa Arens. Everyone adored her, "practically flawless" is what they said about her. Wonderful voice, such poise, grace, just like a queen's.
An ice queen in Jacks mind. She never did anything spontaneous. At least not anything other than school, theatre, music, and her ballet lessons. She was always so stiff, and she gave off a cold tone towards anything that didn't conform to her world of perfection.
"You two would make the perfect couple!" His classmates Rapunzel and Toothiana had told him back in the middle of November.
"What are you talking about?" Jack grumbled in annoyance shutting his locker. It was the hundredth time they had tried to set up Jack with a girl.
"Elsa, frostboy." Tooth began "You two are made for each other."
"Yeah you both love winter, you both wear blue a lot, you both have really light hair. And you totally complete eachother." Rapunzel explained.
"Yeah your tons of fun and so mischievous. She needs someone to bring out her fun side!" Tooth continued.
"I'm not the same person I used to be." Jack stated flatly.
2 years ago Jack's mom and sister got into a car crash and neither survived. He'd been living with his Uncle North ever since. He'd also become cold and distant to all except a few.
"But your haven't been as cold as you once were." Rapunzel smirked. "Ever since she showed up."
Jack frowned and marched away.
"He must really be in love," Tooth sighed
He really was trying to hide the pink in his cheeks.
"Hello Jackson." Elsa cooed from the end of the hallway when he walked by.
"Hi." Jack grunted angrily. Trying to avoid any more attention.

Although that was back in November, Jack sighed at the thought of the girls setting him up. He leaned against the wooden fence surrounding the frozen pond watching his classmates zoom around on the ice.
The ski lodge had a 2 acre pond with stadium lights shining down onto it for night skating. Which is what the day wounded down to. There were multiple fire pits going on, and music coming from the speakers on the light poles.
Jack was scanning the scenery. He spotted Elsa skating with her younger sister Anna on the far side of the pond. Anna was having trouble while Elsa glided across the ice as if she was born into it. Elsa held Anna's hands guiding her on what to do. The sisters giggled and had a great time. Until someone asked Elsa if she could show them some figure skating tricks.
Elsa eyed Jack, (not that the clueless boy noticed) and left Anna at the side of the pond and practically put on an figure skating show. Trying to impress him with little success
Jacks best friend Hiccup who had been circling the pond with his girlfriend Astrid, made their way towards Anna.
Astrid and Hiccup snuck up behind her and both grabbed her hands.
"Woah-woah! What are you two do-ING?" She exclaimed as she stumbled along grasping the both of them for some sort of stability without falling.
"A kidnapping!" Astrid said smugly dragging her away from the crowd that was forming around Elsa.
The first week of school Astrid had accidentally slipped and dumped her lunch tray all over herself. Anna who happened to be right behind her slipped and got her own food all over herself. Astrid was embarrassed at first with everyone laughing at her. Until she looked over at Anna who then slurped a spaghetti noodle off her own cheek. Anna after smiled at Astrid. They both laughed until they hurt and they've been best friends ever since. Anna later revealed that she slipped on purpose so Astrid wouldn't be alone.
Jack smirked at Anna and Astrid. Giggling and having fun, wishing slightly like he could be that way again. A slow song came on and although his friends were halfway across the pond he could still tell that Anna was pushing Astrid and Hiccup to have a romantic skate together.
So they left her and Anna continued to stumble. Jack's attention turned to Elsa who was doing double axels. A small amount of pride in Elsa's heart that she got the boy to notice. Jack was impressed but loathed the idea of being impressed. He turned his attention to Anna, she fell flat on her butt. Hans happened to be skating by and started laughing at her before he skated away. The red head frowned and tried to push herself up again before falling on her front this time. Which resulted in more laughing from bystanders.
Jack used to be one for a laugh, when he used to pull pranks on people. But laughing at Anna when a prank wasn't pulled was just mean. Most people didn't realize Elsa had a sister. Because she wasn't as "flawless" as Elsa was. To everyone else Anna was clumsy, babbled when she was nervous, very naive, "the spare" was the nickname buzzing around school.
Jack sighed and mumbled to himself about how he shouldn't get involved and how dumb of an idea this was going to be. As he skated up to Anna. Who was struggling to even be on all fours. She looked up at Jack and scoffed.
"You here to make fun of me too?" She half sighed.
Jack frowned, "I wanted to see if you wanted help getting up, but if your going to be sour about it then I won't help you." He growled turning away.
"No wait..." Anna reached out to him and Jack paused. "I would really appreciate the help if you would." She gave a shy smile her eyes twinkling at Jack.
The boy lost himself for a moment before he snapped out of it and offered her a hand. Which she took and wobbled her way up to standing.
"I got it, I got it," She held it for a split second then slipped forward bicycling with her feet. "I don't got it, I don't got it, I don't got it!" She exclaimed before flailing into Jack who caught her around her torso. She clutched his right shoulder before she fell further.
"I got you." Jack breathed.
Anna regained a bit of her balance and looked up at Jack. Her eyes shining at him with a smile. She had the most beautiful eyes Jack had ever seen. He couldn't begin to describe the color of her eyes. They were an oceanic turquoise. That made his knees go weak he couldn't help but blush. His usually pale complexion would've given it away but luckily a light was shining at the back of his head covering his face in shadow.
It's true that Jack has been more of himself since Elsa came to town. But Elsa wasn't the reason. It was Anna.
Jack was drawn in by her childlike charm. She was selfless to the bone, and the kindest person you could ever meet. Always thinking of others before herself. Anna also climbed trees effortlessly which is something Jack greatly admired. She seemed to radiate warmth and joy wherever she went. She gave off that feeling that anything is possible or that I'm on top of the world feeling, it wafted through wherever she went. She was the most fearless girl he ever met. He'll remember that day that they met for as long as he lives.

Jack happened to be working his shift at the ice cream shop in the park just before school started. Hans came with a girl named Vanessa. Anna had just brought her Dalmatian Olaf for a walk when she saw Hans kissing Vanessa. She marched up behind him tapped him on the shoulder shouted "CHEATER!" At him then almost broke his nose.
Jack stood there smirking at Hans, thinking to himself he got what he deserved. The old Jack would've busted out laughing. But the person he became since then was just emotionless. Hans' nose was bleeding profoundly after she punched him. She had a lot of guts to do that. Jack watched her as she went over to a bench and sat down. For being a small thing she must be pretty strong too for her to leave him bleeding like that.
He was lost in his thinking until his boss Sandy hit him on the shoulder. Sandy was holding a double scoop super fudge swirl waffle cone with cookie dough chunks in it. He pointed to the double scoop cone then to Anna. Who Jack didn't know at the time. He smiled at his boss. Always wanting to do nice things for people. Even if he didn't say much. Jack took the cone to Anna who had slumped herself onto the bench her head in her hands crying softly to herself. Olaf pawing at her leg.
Jack's smirk died down. Although Jack didn't express much he hated seeing people upset. Before his sister and mother died he was always trying to make people smile. He really did like bringing joy to others but he hasn't been able to bring himself to be joyous since their death.
Olaf barked as Jack approached them. Anna straightened up and her eyes widened at Jack. Jack was taken aback he had never seen such vibrant eyes.
"Uh- Excuse me miss would you like to try our complimentary.. Uh-free sample cone as a promotion to the Man in the Moon Ice Cream Shop. Best ice cream in town! There's nothing like it." Jack said offering the treat stammering, a bit nervous towards the girl.
Jack started to wonder if she was gonna blow up at him for seeing everything that happened. And blubber into him about their relationship and such. He was never good at that sort of thing and gulped.
Anna looked up at him and the treat she smiled at him as she sniffled. Jack seeing the warmth in her eyes gave a crooked smile back. Anna took the ice cream, and tasted it.
"Deliciousness." She giggled at her own word.
"Best ice cream in town miss." Jack goofily smiled at her made up word to.
"Thank you." She said showing a grateful smile.
"Your welcome." He said sheepishly.
He stood there for a bit before he tipped his uniform ball cap with the ice cream shop logo on it and they parted ways.
Jack and Anna never really talked-talked. They were acquaintances at best. They didn't have any classes together. It always seemed that they just missed the other in social gatherings. Yeah they shared a table with Hiccup, Astrid, Eret, Snotlout, Fishlegs, Ruff and Tuffnut. But Jack being as antisocial as he has been usually went off to eat by himself in the courtyard of the school.

Jack cursed his antisocial behavior wishing he knew how to have a conversation with Anna.
"So um, Jack..." Anna darting her eyes off to the side asked "How long have you known how to ice skate?"
Jack was grateful that Anna got the conversation started. Though his permanent scowl said other wise "Ever since I was four." He grunted then coughed and made an effort to change his tone. "My parents and I went all the time when I was little."
"So a natural born skater. Elsa was a natural born skater too. Me though, I could use all the help I can get." She chuckles at herself and Jack smiles warmly at her.
She's so modest he thought.
"You look at the ground to much and your not balancing on your feet." Anna flinched a bit. His tone came out a lot harsher than he meant to but being in a harsh tone for a long time, it's hard to have any other tone. He mentally cursed himself for it.
"Sorry if I sound harsh my throat has a frog in it." Jack apologizes
"You're alright." She hesitated, looked at the ground and debated in her mind.
"Um, Jack? Could you uh- I mean Elsa has tried but so far hasn't succeeded... Teach me please? H-HOw to skate that is, I mean you don't have to I totally get it if you don't want to but your really good so I thought maybe you could help, but-"
Jack drew her up to her full height and smiled stopping her rambling. She stood there and blinked aghast at his sudden action. Jacks heart melted at her words and her expression. He once again made more of an effort to speak gently. "Straighten your feet out so they're square with your shoulders, and bend your knees just a smidge." He said pinching his fingers together then taking her gloved hands into his bare hands. She held onto him but did as she was told.
"Oh-O-Ok now what?" She asked and Jack smirked before he skated backwards taking her along with him.
"Woah-wo-woah!" She exclaimed messing with her footing again looking at her feet.
"Get your footing back and just feel the glide at first ok. Then when your ready I'll teach you how to steer." His tone noticeably gentler.
It took her a bit but she finally got her footing. She was still looking down though.
"You'll never learn if you don't trust your own two feet. You gotta," he paused to lift her chin up with one hand still intertwined with hers. "Look up" he saw those gorgeous eyes and he could feel the heat in his cheeks again. And she threw her head back laughing.
"Ha! I am always tripping over my own two feet there's no helping that. It's no wonder Elsa is such a natural and I have such a hard time." She joked, throwing her hand around before it found his other hand again.
"You still climb trees better than I've ever seen anyone climb a tree." He joked back.
"When have you seen me climb trees?" She asked almost accusingly in a teasing way.
"I work at the ice cream stand in the park remember. I've seen you and Astrid climb trees there to go and have conversations in them some weekends."
"Oh yeah I remember!" She paused, "You were right by the way."
"About what?" Jack asked continuing to guide her while he skated backwards slowly.
"It was the best ice cream in town. I tried taking Elsa there once but you weren't working."She said sheepishly.
A grin spread across Jacks face. "You remember that day?"
"Of course. I got free ice cream, and met a cute boy in the process." Her smile faded as she realized what she just said.
Her face flushed with embarrassment. She started rambling.
"Not to say that your cute-I mean you are cute compared to a lot of guys-not that I've compared you to other guys- not to say that all I think about is you- and not to say that I've thought much about other guys- and and um-"
Jack couldn't help but feel like floating. She thought he was cute! Anna was so busy rambling that she didn't notice how well she was doing.
"Hey look your gliding very well!" He encouraged slightly turning when they reached the end of the lake.
Anna stopped rambling and looked at her feet then back up at Jack.
"Hey your right I'm doing it!" She exclaimed brightly excitement in her eyes and the biggest grin.
"Good job Anna there's hope for you yet!" Astrid shouted coming up behind her hugging her shoulders. Hiccup came up to but he was raising a brow at Jack for holding Anna's hands.
"I'm teaching her how to skate." Jack mumbled to his best friend trying his best to avoid getting red in the face.
Vanessa along with Anastasia and Drizella happened to be skating by. Vanessa loudly whispered to the two "She'll still never be as good as Elsa in any aspect of her life." And skated off.
The group completely stopped skating. Astrid got super red in the face "Come back here say it again and be prepared for a world of pain!" She shouted while Hiccup and Anna held her back.
"Let it go Astrid it's not like those things haven't been said to me before..." Anna trailed off.
"I wish everyone would stop comparing you to your sister and see you the way we see you." Astrid said hugging her shoulders.
"I'm not sure why they wouldn't..." Anna signed gripping her arms "She's perfect."
"What's the fun in perfection?" Hiccup butted in "Sounds rather boring to me. Never get scraped up, never getting messy, never being goofy. Ick. You get rid of like 81.3% of fun that way." Hiccup said making a disgusted face pushing up his glasses on his nose.
Jack was about to say something too when Rapunzel, Tooth, and Elsa came up behind him.
"Jackson" Elsa said in a regal tone that was just off putting to Jack.
"Speak of the Devil." Astrid whispered and Hiccup elbowed her in the side.
"Just Jack is fine." He muttered
"Well Jack, Rapunzel and Tooth tell me that you're quite skilled at skating and new a few two person tricks. I was curious if you wanted to practice them with me?" Elsa asked batting her eyelashes a bit.
Suddenly everything clicked, the way Rapunzel and Tooth came up to him and asked him about Elsa. The way Anna kept mentioning Elsa.... Elsa had a crush on Jack... but Jack is already head over heels for Anna.
"If you wanna go skate with her I understand." Anna said letting go of Jack's hands.
Jack's heart broke at the thought of Anna thinking so little of herself next to her sister. He so desperately wanted her too feel confident in her own abilities and have that same feeling she gave everyone else.
Jack turned to Elsa. "Sorry Els but-
"Elsa please." She cut him off
"I'm extremely sorry your highness," he stated sarcastically "but I'm gonna stay skating with Anna it's a lot of fun teaching her."
He looked at Rapunzel and Tooth with the most perplexed looks on their faces. He could see the gears turning until it clicked in their head that he had a crush on Anna the whole time. They looked sympathetic at Elsa. Elsa just straightening up looked to Anna and Jack. Gave a genuine smile to the both of them and said.
"You two have fun then, and good luck she's a handful." She teased at Anna waving as she skated away.
"Hey now!" Anna giggled.
Even though Elsa was slightly disappointed that Jack liked Anna instead of her deep down she knew that her and Jack's personalities would conflict greatly. But Jack's and Anna's were complimentary. Jack and Elsa we're almost too different from each other with a few similarities.
Jack turned back to Anna with a smile on his face but Anna was slightly downcast which made Jack stomach drop.
"Ready for the next leg of the lesson?" Jack asked sheepishly.
Anna thought for a moment and nodded. Jack took her hands again and started leading the way again while Hiccup and Astrid left. It was silent for a while. Jack's mind raced with possible solutions to many problems that could explain why Anna was upset. Finally she spoke.
"Jack you really didn't have to stay with me because of what Vanessa said..." They stopped as she crossed her arms and clutched her elbows. Avoiding eye contact.
Jacks felt so much heartache for her he grasped her shoulders trying to be comforting. "Anna I want to stay and be with you... and teach you, this has nothing to do with that I promise you." He desperately tried to explain. "Teaching you had been the best part of this trip for me. I can't remember when I had this much fun."
"Your not using me to get to her?" She sniffles.
"If I was using you I would've gone off with Elsa already. Trust me" He tried to make her understand. "Anna please, I promise you that I am 100% sincere. I don't want to hurt you and I wanna stay with you because..." he trailed off. His mouth was running away with his feelings and he flushed red.
"Because, why?" Anna sniffed finally looking at him eyes shimmering with tears at the ends.
"Because... because....." Jack sighed. dropping his arms. "Because you radiate joy and life wherever you go. I've been missing that in my life for a long time. And whenever I see you I feel like I can achieve that... I've sorta... been paying attention to you... You're extraordinary Anna. And I've sorta. God I didn't think I'd be admitting this now... got a... crush... on you." Jack finished wincing at Anna's dumbfounded expression.
"M-me?" She asked
"Yes-... yes of course you. You're so full of life, adventure, kindness, fun, you're fearless and not afraid to be you. Especially with criticism from girls like Vanessa trying to compare you to the stiff, cold, somewhat boring, ice queen that is your sister."
Jack paused before getting really red and rambled like Anna.
"I understand if you don't feel the same way-it's not like I ever talked to you or hung out with you-even if you feel the same way I would need time to get my grumpy attitude in check before I date anyone-but you do make me want to be a better person-I really do wanna get better because of you-"
"Jack" Anna cut off his rambling and put a hand on his shoulder.
Jack paled and recoiled a bit from her actions. Anna smiled warmly towards him.
"I have a crush on you too." She said softly
Jacks heart inflated and he felt like doing backflips his expression sure showed it
"Your right though, I barely know you. I would like to do that before I start dating you. Im also glad you wanna change. I've noticed you have been making an effort to not be the "Jack Frost" I've heard so much about" She grinned sheepishly.
"I'm ok with that... what do you want to know?" He asked as they continued the skating lessons.
The night went on and Anna could now wobbly skate on her own. They got to know each other better and ended up at a fire pit roasting marshmallows with Astrid, Hiccup, and the others. Anna yawned as everyone laughed at Ruffnut put a partially melted marshmallow in Tuffnut's hair. Anna let her head lay on Jacks shoulder. They continued to joke and jabber on as young adults do Anna whispered to Jack
"You know, for someone so cold you sure know how to make a person feel warm."
Jack smirked and enjoyed the night for it's worth

6 months later Jack would officially call Anna his girlfriend. And he couldn't be happier.
