Prologue Part 5

Your POV:

I sighed from talking to Kokichi. I walked out of the room slowly without a word. I was deep in thought about the conversation we just had. Something did strike me odd in the conversation.

'Did say that he wants to break me?' I thought to myself.

I looked down slightly, still thinking about it. While I was thinking, someone suddenly tapped me on my shoulder, snapping me back into the real world. That person was Rantaro. I slowly lifted my head so I could look at him. He smiled kindly at me which made a blush spread through me like wild fire.

"Hey are you alright? You seem deep in thought," Rantaro explained with a slight chuckle.
"Y-Yeah! I'm fine!" I exclaimed, "you don't need to worry."

I looked around slightly to keep myself from getting too deep into thought again. I noticed a staircase that supposedly led to a lower floor than the one Rantaro and I were on. It had the same pattern as the other staircases. I walked up to the staircase.

"It looks like these stairs lead to the basement," I said, "what should we do? You wanna head down?"
"I dunno... The basement might be dangerous for you. This place is full of mysteries," Rantaro replied.
"Then let's proceed with caution! With you at the front!" I exclaimed.
"So you want me in the front... I see." Rantaro replied nervously.

Rantaro almost naturally went down the staircase, leading the way with no fear present in his actions or expressions. I smiled lightly following him down. We both went down, the only thing heard was the echo of our footsteps.

Once we got downstairs, I observed the surroundings carefully. Wires hung from the ceiling, and there was less vegetation than in the other rooms. The floors were a gray linoleum and the walls were gray with what looked like to be scratch marks on them.

"It doesn't *look* very dangerous to me..." I muttered.
"Ah, well...some dangers are hidden where you can't see," Rantaro replied causally.
"Rantaro...you have quite the imagination, don't you?" I asked in response.
"No, I just think you're not considering how dangerous this could be..." Rantaro replied with a serious look.
"Yeah maybe," I laughed nervously, "but we should look around the basement, too. There might be an exit. Oh, but we should be careful."
"Yeah you're right." Rantaro replied with a slight chuckle.

I looked to my right and saw a door. I decided to walk that way. Upon closer inspection, the door read "Library".

"Hey Rantaro. There might be someone in there!" I exclaimed, pointing at the library.
"Yeah. You might be right. We can even look for manga because of your otaku talent,"
Rantaro replied.

I nodded eagerly and walked into the library. As soon as I opened the door, I gagged from the musty smell of old books.

"So this is a library..." I muttered.
"There are books all over the place... It doesn't seem very organized," Rantaro replied.
"Oh, does that bother you? Are you a neat-freak, Rantaro? Do you have OCD?" I asked teasingly.
"No, it's just... I was wondering if someone was using it before us," Rantaro replied.
"Huh? Someone?" I asked.
"Ah, It's nothing. Let's just investigate for now," Rantaro replied.

I nodded in response. I looked around the library and noticed many piles of books littering the floor. There was also a black and blue globe that was spinning on its own in the room. I found that quite odd.

I noticed that on top all of the book shelves had many books crammed there. One of the book shelves didn't have a pile of books on top which struck me odd.

I noticed a girl in front of the front bookcase. She had long pigtails that basically reached the floor. She wore a red school uniform with a black plaided skirt. She had knee length tights and wore normal shoes. She had an infinity symbol looking clip in her hair. She was dismissively looking to the side as if she were annoyed. I approached her slowly.

"Um... Are you an Ultimate student, too?" I asked, showing a light welcoming smile.
"Yeah that's right," the girl replied, looking towards me.

The girl's voice was quiet, yet intimidating for some reason. She sounded shy but cold. It was a bit strange.

The girl looked to the side again. It was like she was trying to ignore us. Either that, or she doesn't talk much.

"I'm (y/n), (l/n). I'm the Ultimate Otaku," I said.
"I know you already know me, but I'll reintroduce myself just in case you forgot. I'm Rantaro Amami. I may not  remember my Ultimate talent, but I'm not a bad guy," Rantaro said.
"And what about you?" I asked.
"Maki Harukawa... Ultimate Child Caregiver..." the girl known as Maki replied.

I looked at Maki and gave her a smile. She didn't seem one to socialize much, so it would be hard to assume that she was a child caregiver.

"Ultimate Child Caregiver, huh..." I muttered.
"...Surprised? I don't look like someone who'd like kids, do I?" Maki asked.
"Huh?" I asked in shock, since she guessed what I was thinking.

Maki looked to the side, her hands playing with the long bangs she had on the right side of her face. She looked very innocent in that position.

"Well, you'd be right. I don't like kids that much," Maki explained.
"B-But...if you're the Ultimate Child Caregiver, then children must like you a lot, right...?" I asked in response.

Maki stayed silent once again. It was a bit like your standard awkward silence. Where no one talks after something was said. It made me feel judged.

"Kids are... weird. They come to me on their own," Maki explained, finally breaking the silence, "I'm not that good at taking care of them... I'm not that friendly, either..."
"But they say kids are very intuitive. If they like you that much......then they can probably tell how loving you really are, Maki!" I replied with a nice smile.

Maki looked to the side, her eyebrows narrowing.

'I made her upset, didn't I...' I thought.

I wanted to fix what I said in the best way I could.

"Yeah! That must be it! You've chosen a perfect career for yourself!" I exclaimed.
"...It wasn't my choice to begin with," Maki replied harshly.

I jumped slightly as beads of sweat started to roll down my face. I felt someone place their hand on my shoulder.

"Hey (y/n), relax. It's ok. I'm here," Rantaro told me.

I nodded lightly, regaining my composure. I decided to ask another question.

"Huh? What do you mean by that?" I asked.
"...Nothing. It's just...I grew up in an orphanage and got saddled with helping out a lot," Maki explained.

My eyes widened slightly.

'Orphanage, huh? I see...' I thought.

I looked to the side to try and get rid of any emotions that would impair me at the moment.

"Ah, by the way... I forgot to ask this the first time we met. Do you know anything about the Monokubs?" Rantaro asked.
"Yeah! Someone's gotta be controlling them, right!? Any idea who it might be?" I asked.
"...How would I know?" Maki asked.
"Well, fair point..." I replied, "Hmmm... The Monokubs are defiantly involved in our situation..."
"Hey Rantaro. You seem to know more than you let on. Shouldn't you know what's going on here?" Maki asked.
"What?" Rantaro asked.
"W-Well just because he knows a bit more, doesn't mean he knows everything. No one can know everything," I explained, "I mean, who cares about some stuffed animals!? Escaping this place is way more important!"
"Seriously? You think we can escape?" Maki asked, "abducting Ultimates from across the country would require massive resources and planning. What makes you think a group capable of that would let us just walk out of here?"
"If they won't end this, then we will! I know we can do it if we work together!" I exclaimed.
"Work together? With strangers? You're a naive fool if you think you can end this so easily," Maki replied, before walking out of the room.

I sighed lightly. I looked around the library to try to get rid of any emotion.

"Now you know what I do," Rantaro explained, "she doesn't seem like the Ultimate Child Caregiver."
"It's rude to say that, but I agree..." I replied.

Without a word, I walked out of the library. Rantaro let out a sigh, and he followed me. I walked to the left side of the staircase where I found a room that had a door similar to the library. The only difference was the name of the room. The blue bold letters spelled "Game Room". I walked in silently, still being slightly confused about how Maki was acting.

Once I entered the room, I noticed many broken video game machines around the place. The type of games present would be the same as in side of an arcade.

"It looks like a Game Room..." I said, finally speaking again, "but this is a school, right? Is it normal for a school to have its own Game Room?"
"It certainly is stange..." Rantaro replied.

I sighed lightly before looking to the side. I noticed a very short person standing there. He looked about 3'5 in height, and had big eyes. He wore a beanie that had two spikes sticking out, that made it look like cat ears. He had a leather jacket and blue and black stripped pants. It looked like there was some sort of candy cigarette in his mouth.

"Sheesh...what a strange place," the guy said, holding the said candy cigarette in his hand, "when I heard we were trapped here, I didn't expect we'd have a Game Room."
"Are we really trapped in here? There must be an exit, right?" I asked the guy in response.
"Isn't that what you guys are walking around looking for?" the guy asked, pulling the beanie half way over his eyes, giving him a darker look, "then...figure it out yourself."
"Oh, o-okay..." I replied nervously.
"We may be trapped here, but it's pretty cool here. Compared to prison anyway..." the guy responded with a content look on his face.
"Prison...? What? But you're an Ultimate student, aren't you?" I asked.
Hmph...that's an old story. Ryoma Hoshi, the man called the Ultimate Tennis Pro... no longer exists. I'm nothing more than his empty shell," the guy known as Ryoma said.
"It's hard to believe he's in the newspaper. When I first met him, I was surprised myself," Rantaro said with a slight chuckle, "he is the tennis prodigy who single-handedly took down the mafia..."

My eyes widened in shock. I gasped loudly and flailed my arms around.

"You took down a mafia by yourself!?" I exclaimed.
"The papers said he shot them through the head with his tennis skills and an iron ball," Rantaro explained.

I closed my mouth and stood still.

'What the hell? Really!?' I thought.

Ryoma let out a slight chuckle and sighed.

"You just come back to learn more, don't you Rantaro. You already know so much," Ryoma said, "well? What do you think of the loser before you who used his talent to kill?"
"B-But...why would you throw away your future like that?" I asked.
"Hmph, because I didn't need a future anymore..." Ryoma replied.
"Huh?" I asked.
"No...it's nothing. It's not like me to talk so much," Ryoma responded, sighing in the process, "anyway... I'm warning you. It's dangerous to just walk up to a killer like me," Ryoma explained, then turning his back towards us.

I sighed and looked at Rantaro.

"Well He is kinda like you (y/n)..." Rantaro explained, "his self esteem is low enough for his future to be affected...."

Welp there you have it. Chapter 5 is done. I'm sorry I haven't updated recently. A lot of stuff happened this month that really stressed me out. I want to try to update this once a week, and the FMA Fanfiction once every two weeks. That'll start soon, if I feel motivated. Well I'll update soon!
