Chapter 4 Part 29: What Happened to Miu?
Your POV:
It seemed that the investigation was going well so far, and there was a decent amount of information in the computer room. Shuichi, Kaede, Kaito, Tenko, Himiko, Angie, Tsumugi, Rantaro, Keebo, and myself were going back into the Virtual World to see if there was any links to the case there.
That's where we were now, minus Kokichi, Maki, Ryoma, Kiyo, Kirumi, and Gonta. They were all staying behind in the computer lab while the rest of us investigated the Virtual World. I was standing in the salon as the others appeared before me, this being our group for investigating the mansion. I was face to face with the graphics of the world.
Himiko seemed to be happy about her avatar, signifying that she actually liked it. Tenko was going on about how she liked the graphics if Himiko did. On the other hand, there was one thing I noticed once we were back here. Keebo and Rantaro seemed to notice it too. We always would appear in this room to either log in or out. Miu was truthful about that fact, but my mind was constantly having the question about what Miu changed in this world.
The question arose on how Kaito was logged out of he was on the roof the full time. I honestly didn't even know how it was possible. We needed to investigate that as well, and Kaede and Shuichi said as much. It was agreed that we all needed to investigate Miu's avatar first, which was still near the chapel.
It was decided that we would head to the chapel. Everyone was in agreement when it came to that. I honestly wondered what exactly we'd find once we got there. Would Miu's avatar even still be in the Virtual World? I guess there was only one way to find out.
Everyone in the investigation group, one by one started to leave the salon. The Virtual World only made it possible for one person to leave a room at a time. Not everyone was here though, so it didn't take as long as it would with everyone here. Soon enough, the only people left in the salon were Rantaro, Shuichi, and I.
"I honestly wonder if we're going to be able to find some evidence here..." I muttered, "would Miu's avatar still be here...?"
"I honestly don't know," Rantaro replied, "there's only one way to find out though. I'm sure nothing has changed since we left."
"Rantaro is right," Shuichi replied, "if they saw Miu's avatar near the chapel, then chances are it's still there."
I nodded lightly in response to that. I didn't know if there was some sort of weird save file that needed to be triggered. If that wasn't the case, then nothing should've changed since we left. That's what I was hoping.
"We shouldn't keep everyone waiting," Rantaro said, "honestly, I'm just glad Kiyo didn't decide to come with us. I don't trust him after what he tried to do..."
"I understand that," Shuichi replied, "but... either way we are going to have to work with him at some point to uncover the truth... honestly, I'm kinda surprised that you weren't upset with me that I tried to attack you..."
"It's water under the bridge at this point," Rantaro laughed, "to me, it felt normal for some reason. I honestly don't even know the reasoning behind that, but I can assure you that I'm not lying."
I could feel myself grow slightly concerned when he said that. Rantaro mentioned that what Shuichi tried to do from the past was somehow normal. This made me realize something... there was things about Rantaro that I didn't even know. Did Rantaro even know himself? I told him time and time again everything about myself, but I felt like I was only on the surface of his true emotions.
I brought my avatar hands to my face, and I hit my cheeks, causing my avatar to look slightly red as if I were blushing. There was no time to focus on this right now. We had to meet up with everyone, and that fact was apparent enough.
"We should probably head out and meet the others," I said, "we need to see if Miu's avatar is still by the chapel, and we need to find out the reason Kaito was logged out on the roof."
Shuichi and Rantaro both nodded their heads in response to those words. Rantaro and Shuichi exited the salon one at a time, and I followed behind. As soon as we exited the salon, everyone who was in our group was waiting for us. They all had their direction directed at the map, and I took this as a sign to look at it.
The two maps were the same in accordance to what Miu told us before. There was the map of the mansion, and a map of the Virtual World. The mansion map had the salon, dining room, kitchen, and a bathroom on the first floor. The second floor was the rooftop. We split up during this time. Kokichi was in the salon. Tsumugi, Rantaro, and myself were in the dining room. Shuichi and Kaede were both in the kitchen. Gonta had the outside, and Kaito was on the roof. Knowing the places everyone was in charge of was crucial to finding out what happened.
•Truth Bullet Added: Map of the Mansion•
The map of the Virtual World was surrounded by a black wall that went four directions. The map loading point was in the dead center, making the map split in two. No sound or sight would be able to pass through the map loading point, so to be able to get to the chapel, we had to go through that point. We also had to cross the river that ran parallel with the map as well. This was how the world was designed, but I somehow felt like there was some secret about this whole thing. For now, this was all of the information on this map.
•Truth Bullet Added: Map of the World•
There was something that was bothering me about these maps, but I didn't know exactly what. Before I could try and think on why something was bothering me, Himiko as well as the group started speaking about Shuichi and I. They were telling us that we didn't have to be in some sort of shell. That they would be there for us no matter what. I was touched about that, and I couldn't help but smile at it, and have a happy expression on my avatar.
Shuichi however wasn't happy about what the others were saying. Rantaro stood by us, and Kaede decided to stay as everyone else in the group left one at a time after saying something to Shuichi and I. Shuichi was now saying that he was just investigating, which was the truth. Kaede asked him if he was doing okay, and he said he was. Kaede seemed to be very happy after she heard that.
I knew that our group was heading outside because we were going to be making our way to the chapel. Kaede recommended that we all head outside, and we did agree. We walked one at a time through the door that led to the outside of the mansion. As soon as we all got outside, I saw Keebo waiting for us, asking that we all come with him. Before he asked, he did approach us, and I wondered what was going on.
According to Keebo, he found something strange. He didn't know if it was related to the case, but he still wanted to hear our opinion on it. Keebo requested that we followed him, so we did. We went left from the door we exited from and went up. As soon as we got to the place Keebo was leading us to, I saw something strange. It was a roll of toilet paper, which most likely came from the mansion's bathroom. I was confused on why this was here, and Keebo's first thought was that he thought someone came out here to defecate. I didn't think the avatars had vowel movements, so I didn't think that was possible.
It never occurred to Keebo that that was possible when Shuichi said something about it. He mentioned that he didn't have to expel waste in the real world, so it felt normal to him. Keebo soon raced off, leaving us with the roll of toilet paper that was somehow outside. We told him to wait, but he just ran away.
I honestly wondered why toilet paper would be in a place like this... was it even related to this case? I had no idea, but I couldn't dismiss this. I needed to keep this in my brain just in case it was somehow related to the case.
•Truth Bullet Added: Toilet Paper•
While it was weird that this was here in Rantaro's words, he mentioned that we should all head to the bridge like everyone else. It seemed that all of us agreed with that notion, so we all headed down the stairs that led from the mansion entrance. We followed the trail over to the river where the dock and makeshift signboard bridge was. Kaito asked if this was the signboard that Miu threw into the river.
My mind instantly drifted back to when Miu did that. There was only one signboard in this world, so it had to be the same signboard she threw into the river. Rantaro explained to Kaito that it was the same signboard. Miu told me to get the signboard, but Rantaro was the one who wound up carrying it back. We also were in the group that brought back the signboard from the rocks after these strange occurrences happened, but Gonta was the one who actually carried it.
There was something that was bothering me about this predicament though, and Shuichi explained that he felt that way as well...it was about the river and the signboard. The rocks that the signboard got caught on weren't on the chapel side of the map. That much was obvious. The signboard was on the mansion side of the map, which didn't make sense to me. Himiko asked Shuichi what bothered him. She mentioned that the signboard got washed away from the chapel to the mansion side. Tenko praised the magician for her memory as she proceeded to pinch Himiko's avatar cheeks.
My mind however was thinking about what was just said. The signboard washed away from the chapel to the mansion side. That was quite odd... the flow of the river... I didn't know what about it was odd yet, but I knew that something was off about this whole thing.
Everyone in our group was telling us that we should get moving, especially Kaito. Everyone started crossing the signboard one at a time after they told us to think later and investigate. I knew they were right about that. We needed to get to the scene of the crime. We needed to investigate everything we could. I needed to bring Miu back. I have no idea if crying on her in this world would even work...
I knew I needed to cross the river, but something was fishy about what happened with the signboard. I knew that Shuichi and Rantaro agreed with me about that. For now, I needed to focus. For now, I would keep this bit of information in the back of my mind until I could link everything up. It was all I could do. Shuichi and Rantaro followed everyone as they crossed the river one at a time.
•Truth Bullet Added: Signboard Used as a Bridge•
I crossed the river, following everyone else. I walked through the map loading point, my sight going dark, and my hearing like static. Just as soon as that happened, my sight and hearing returned as I appeared on the other side of the loading point. I felt myself shiver after I got past the map loading point, but I decided to keep moving nonetheless.
I continued to follow the trail in order to get to the chapel. I could feel the coldness on my skin, causing me to shiver. I could feel the snow touch my skin from my (f/c) slip on dress shoes. It was slightly painful... as if I was going to get frost nip on the areas of my avatar body where there wasn't clothing over, such as socks or gloves. It was freezing.
Despite that, I had to pull through. I continued to follow the trail, soon getting to the stone chapel. I knew I would be seeing everyone near the side of the chapel. I made my way over to the side of the chapel, seeing that everyone was already there. They were all gathered around something, so I decided to see what everyone was gathering in front of.
Getting closer to inspect what was going on, I finally saw what everyone was staring at. Miu's avatar was face down in the snow, not moving in any way. There were a few items cascaded around her as she remained motionless in the snow. Her avatar was still here, and that meant we could investigate what happened.
"The scene of the crime has not been altered since I found her," Keebo explained.
"In other words, there's no possibility the crime scene could've been tampered with," Rantaro mused, "that saves us a lot of trouble..."
"Nyahahaha!" Angie exclaimed, "that's correct! It looks the same from when we left it! Even Atua agrees!"
"I'm pretty confident in my memory that Angie is telling the truth," Himiko replied, "I memorized a magic spell that would take a whole year just to chant!"
"That's my Himiko!" Tenko gushed, hugging Himiko with a smile, "she is such an amazing mage!"
"P-Please don't start the chant now," Tsumugi stuttered, "I don't want to wait a whole year. I Gonta think I could wait a full year!"
I let out a small sigh as all of this commotion happened. We had to focus on the investigation. I wanted to save everyone, and I wanted everyone to be happy as well. I knew it was important to have things that would help improve the mood, but I knew we still had a responsibility.
Looking at Miu's avatar, I wondered what happened. As explained before, there were a few items that were near her avatar. Tsumugi was curious on what happened as well. I knew very well that we were going to have to investigate those items that were around Miu. Kaito even said it himself. We needed to investigate the items around Miu.
I walked over to an item that had a black handle. On further inspection, I realized that that said thins was a hammer. Why would there be a hammer here? I didn't get it. I found myself very confused on this matter.
'Why is there a hammer here!?' I thought, 'I thought that all dangerous items were removed from this world!'
I knew very well that there wasn't supposed to be anything dangerous here. Miu even said that herself. Before we even went into the Virtual World, she told us that she deleted everything that could be used as a weapon in the Virtual World. I couldn't imagine that Miu would miss something like a hammer.
I realized something that I still wasn't quite sure about. Miu was probably lying, but why would she lie? The hammer was obviously proof that not all dangerous objects were deleted. It could've been missed or left here on purpose. I had to keep this information in my head. This was very important for me to keep tabs on. Once I brought Miu back, I would defiantly be asking her about the hammer. I had to.
•Truth Bullet Added: Hammer•
"(y/n), are you alright?" I heard Kaede ask, "you look bothered by something..."
"I think Miu might've be lying to us about something..." I muttered, "there's a lot of strange things here, and I honestly don't even know if I can piece it all together..."
"(y/n), I know you can do this," Kaede replied with a smile, "remember when we had those class trials...? You were able to keep up with Shuichi and I. I knew you both were being hounded by Kokichi to work with him, so I left you guys alone for the time being. That being said, you need to have more faith in yourself. The answers you'll seek will come through eventually. You have to get all pieces of the puzzle before you try to solve it. I have faith in you, (y/n), and everyone feels the same way."
"Kaede is right!" Tenko exclaimed, "you are amazing, (y/n)! If you never would've figured out Kiyo's plan, then I would probably be dead right now!"
I could feel myself start to grow more confident as everyone in the group started to agree. They were giving words of encouragement. I didn't know what I did to deserve friends as great as these. I never thought I would have friends before, but that all was changing more and more. I used to be a suicidal nobody, but now... I could feel that I wasn't a nobody. I was someone.... Someone that people could count on.
"Thank you guys..." I muttered, "you all are so amazing. I never thought I would have this many friends in the past... but now I do... I want to make sure everyone stays alive no matter what... I'll do anything I can to make that happen."
"It's no problem, (y/n)," Kaede replied with a smile, "we should get back to investigating though. I see that Miu had a hammer near her body, but there's obviously more items to investigate other than that hammer... we should probably focus on that."
I nodded in response to Kaede's words. I decided I would take a look at the other items that were around Miu's avatar. One of them in specific was a bright hot pink color. Upon closer inspection, I could see that it was a cell phone. The glowing screen in the light as well as the buttons made that much clear to me. I was wondering why there was a cell phone here... what use would it have? I didn't even know this world had cell phones.
"This is... a cell phone..." I muttered, "but what is the purpose of one here...?"
It was almost as if after I asked that question, the answer clicked. It was a phone... It may have been a cell phone, but it was still a phone nonetheless. Shuichi was looking at the cell phone too. We were both hunched over, investigating the little device.
"Hmm, a cell phone!" Kaito exclaimed, "I can't believe there's something like this here!"
"Kaito, perfect timing," Shuichi replied, "I'd like you to help me out with something. I just want to test something out."
Shuichi was requesting for Kaito to help him out with something, and I felt like I knew what he was going to test. He was going to see if Kaito could be logged out by that cell phone. That was what Shuichi was doing, because if that phone was able to log him out, it would explain why he was logged out on the roof.
Kaito seemed to be more than thrilled to help Shuichi out. He mentioned that he'd never say know to his sidekicks. Shuichi seemed to smile lightly in his avatar. He told Kaito that he appreciated the help. I knew what was going to happen next. Kaito asked Shuichi what he needed to do, and Shuichi told him that he didn't have to do anything. All Kaito had to do was stand there.
Shuichi picked up the cell phone, and he held it up to his mouth. I waited in bated breath as Kaito asked Shuichi if all he had to do was stand there. Shuichi didn't even reply for a few seconds.
"Kaito Momota..." Shuichi said into the phone.
After Shuichi said Kaito's name, that all too familiar glowing blue circle sucked Kaito out. I knew this appeared when someone logged in or out. That meant that the cell phone was something that could log someone out. I had a feeling that was the case, and Shuichi definitely knew that as well. If he didn't know, then he wouldn't have tried to use the cell phone to log Kaito out as a test. This cell phone was just like the one in the salon.
There was another thing that this proved. The fact of the matter was that it wasn't the person themselves who would have to say their name. Someone else could say their name and log them out. I knew Shuichi was starting to piece this together, and I felt like I was starting to as well.
It looked to me that Miu was the one who had this phone, so she must've decided to log Kaito out manually. That was the only thing that made sense to me. Other than that, nothing made sense. I knew this cell phone was important evidence, so I decided to keep it in my mind.
•Truth Bullet Added: Cell Phone•
I knew Kaito was probably very upset with Shuichi for logging him out. If he wasn't angry, he was probably shocked. Shuichi probably had the urge to apologize to him later. I knew the next thing I needed to investigate was Miu's avatar. I slowly inched over to her avatar, seeing that she was face down in the snow, frozen in the same position.
It felt to me that an avatar disappears if someone logs out, but if that avatar's real body dies, it would remain. It made sense considering that this was a killing game simulator. Without the body, we wouldn't able to investigate. I did notice that there were no injuries on Miu's avatar.
"The avatars never show injuries, so they stay the same..." Shuichi explained, "she still looks almost alive."
As Shuichi said that, I was hunched over Miu. A blue glowing circle appeared under her unmoving avatar. Slowly, Miu's avatar began to sink into the glowing circle, slowly disappearing. Her avatar showed no sign of moving as this happened. I could feel my avatar eyes widened. Soon enough, the cell phone, the hammer, and what looked like lattice was left behind.
I thought I must've been seeing things, but I would soon find out that wasn't the case. Everyone in our group, including me had exclamation marks over their avatar heads, accompanied with a shocked look on their avatar expressions. Miu's avatar was no longer in the Virtual World, and I didn't even know what was the cause of it.
"W-What the hell just happened!?" Tenko shouted, "why did her avatar disappear!?"
"Nyahahaha!" Angie replied, "I have no idea, what a mysterious thing to happen!"
"I-If her avatar is gone from the world, could she have been brought back to the living world!?" Tsumugi exclaimed.
I honestly had no idea what was going on. I knew for a fact that I was the only person who could save Miu. I didn't know why her avatar disappeared, but we made the unanimous vote to head back to the real world to see what was going on. I was nervous as we started to head back through the map loading point, crossing the river, and entering the mansion. We ran into Kaito along the way who was pretty pissed off at Shuichi for logging him out.
Shuichi countered it by explaining the situation to Kaito. He mentioned that Miu's avatar disappeared as we entered the mansion. He seemed to agree that heading back to see what happened would be the best option. According to him, Miu was still lifeless.
I guess we would find out. I entered the salon with bated breath as everyone in our group started to log out. Soon enough, I was the last one to log out, feeling myself exit the world as I said my name into the phone. I guess in retrospect, we could've used the cell phone to log everyone out, but I guess none of us thought of that.
I could feel the darkness seep into my eyes. The visor was covering my line of sight once again, but I didn't hesitate to take it off. I had to see what was going on. Taking off the visor... a bright light entered my vision before clearing out. Looking to the direction of Miu's seat... she was there, but she was no longer dead....
Hello all! I'm sorry for the terrible wrap up! I've been busy this week, and I finished this update while waiting to ride the Maverick at Cedar Point!
The past couple of days, I've been riding rides, and that explains why this update is a bit late. It's still on a Friday, but it's late.
I'm still waiting to post the Fanart, but in any case! I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. I know the author's note was short, but I'm busy! Have a wonderful Friday, and I hope you all had fun reading! ;-; Ciao!- yuki_no_fuyu
