Chapter 4 Part 14: Kaito and Ryoma's First Freetime Events

Your POV:

My thoughts were still going back to the incident that happened with Kokichi. I had no idea what was motivating him to act this way, nor did I know his true intentions. I thought about they for a few moments after I entered my dorm, because the whole situation was still very fresh on my mind.
Kaito hitting Kokichi... what Miu said about being able to save us... so much was going on right now, and I didn't know how to process everything.
I didn't know whether I should go find Kokichi or not. He was silent after Kaito hit him, not saying a word. Kokichi would normally just laugh something like that off before continue spinning more lies. It made me slightly concerned about Kokichi. I couldn't help but be concerned even though his actions did irritate me sometimes.
The truth of the situation was that Kokichi was starting to scare me. The way he spoke in a seemingly innocent manner. How his tone went dark. What he was saying about being the next blackened to win the killing game. My fear was if I spent more time alone with him, he might actually attempt to kill me... like Kiyo did.
Perhaps I was overthinking everything. Kokichi seemed to care about me more than I thought, considering his past actions. When interrogating Kiyo, he said if he tried to hurt me, he would kill him. I knew he was serious about that, so chances were he wouldn't try to kill me.
I shook my head to get the thoughts of who could attempt my life out of my head. I knew that I had some free time. I knew I had to put it to good use.
There was one person I wanted to hang out with. I was worried about him the previous night when he went to use the bathroom in a hurry. Even though I was classified as a "sidekick", I wanted to hang out with Kaito for a bit.
I decided to check my Monopad to see where he was. It looked like Kaito wasn't in the dormitory, so I decided to change the map to out in the courtyard. Normally the Monopad will always depict someone as a glowing yellow dot on the screen, and I saw one in the courtyard. Maybe that dot was Kaito. I recalled him standing in a similar place when we first met him.
It always seemed that Kaito loved the outdoors. If he didn't, then why would he have us train outdoors? He always seemed to be very serious about self confidence and exercise, so it made me wonder why he always procrastinated so much.
I exited the dormitory with a spring of my step. I wasn't going to let what happened earlier today ruin the rest of the day. I wanted to try to stay more on the positive side.
Almost instantly after I left the dormitory, I saw Kaito out in the courtyard. Observation hasn't failed me yet which was pretty nice. Taking past events into observation helps finding certain people, and it also helps with the trials too.
(FYI I did the location for chapter 2)
One thing never changed despite being here though. Even though I was in a relationship with Rantaro, I still wanted to get to know everyone here the best I could. I still wanted to be friends with everyone, that fact was very true. It always was that way for me.
I waved at Kaito who seemed to be looking around the courtyard. He seemed to see me waving at him, so he waved back at me before approaching me. He had what looked like a bright smile on his face, and I couldn't help it but smile back at him.
"Heya, (y/n)!" Kaito exclaimed, "it looks like one of my sidekicks wants to do some extra training!"
I laughed nervously in response to that. I wasn't that sore from the night before, but I never did agree to extra training. That was only his assumption. It wasn't that surprising that Kaito thought that that's what I came for.
"Bold of you to assume that I wanted to do some extra training," I laughed, "what if I said I just wanted to hang out with you?"
Kaito seemed to think for a moment after I said that. It was obvious to me that Kaito believed that I wanted to do some extra training. Knowing him, he probably still would try to get me to do that.
"You don't want to do extra training?" Kaito asked, "but you want to hang out with me? If that's the case, then why don't we just sit in the courtyard?"
"That should be fine," I laughed nervously in response, "I'm still kinda sore from last night's training session, and this morning was just stressful."
"Alright then! I, Kaito Momota, Luminary of the Stars will allow you to relax until nighttime comes!" Kaito exclaimed.
With Kaito saying that, we both decided to hang out in the courtyard, where we normally did our nighttime training. This time however, we were just relaxing, not having to get sweaty with exercise. That would come during the night. I had a feeling that Kaito and I were going to get closer after this. I was hoping that instead of focusing on my troubles, I could try to see what possibly could be troubling him.
Kaito always spent his time trying to make Shuichi, Maki, and I more confident, so I obviously wanted to help him in anyway I could. I had a feeling that when Kaito told us the previous night that he had no worries, it was not truthful. I had no idea why I felt that way about it. Kaito was always so carefree and genuine, but what if part of it was an act? That's what I wanted to find out.
In any case, since I was going to be hanging out with Kaito for part of the day, I was going to give him a gift. Whenever I would hang out with someone, I would always give them a gift as a "thanks" for making the time to hang out with me.
I checked my inventory that I had. Normally when I had some other free time, I would stop at the school store to buy some items that could be used as gifts. I would use the Monocoins I earned in the past to get those gifts. It was quite simple, but also effective in making a friend smile.
I saw a few things that I was thinking about giving Kaito. My inventory was vast, and I didn't even know how I could even have all of this stuff. It was like the Monopad could dispense items for any given situation.
'A milk puzzle... rock hard ice cream... cosmic blanket...' I thought, 'plastic moon buggy model! Perfect!'
I smiled lightly when I saw that. Since Kaito was the Ultimate Astronaut, I thought that he would enjoy this. I took the model out of my inventory, and presented it in my hands for Kaito. When he saw it, he had a shocked look on his face.
"A-Are you serious!? I didn't think you could even find this around here!" Kaito exclaimed, "as expected...no, amazing job, (y/n)! I'm so happy! Maybe I should get my sidekick a gift sometime too!"
I laughed nervously in response to that. I normally didn't expect anything back from anyone when I gave them gifts. I knew very well that many people have told me that they should get me something sometime, but I didn't really mind if I didn't get anything in return. The only person that gave me something in return was Rantaro, and that was the choker around my neck. The one that was styled like the ones I had when I first got here, but the only difference being the locket charm.
I felt like I was a bit closer to Kaito as a friend. Hanging out in the courtyard was nice, and hopefully Kaito would tell me if something was worrying him. I could feel the wind blowing through my (h/l), (h/c) hair as I felt the cool breeze. I wondered what we were going to discuss.
"As thanks for that gift, I'll tell you a cool story," Kaito explained, "if you have something to tell me, don't hold back! I'll listen!"
    "U-Um okay," I nervously replied.
It seemed like Kaito was enthusiastic about this. He seemed very interested in telling me a story. I didn't know if it would be about his past, or his talent. I knew that if something was wrong, I would have to hang out with him more than once. I wanted to get to know everyone in this school.
"As you know, (y/n), I'm an astronaut trainee, but I'm going to be accepted for sure!" Kaito exclaimed.
"Isn't that going to be a bit hard?" I asked in response, "I mean when you and I first met, you told me that you had a pretty crafty friend who forged stuff for you to take the exam."
Kaito seemed to have a shocked look on his face in response to that. It was like he wasn't expecting me to remember what he told me. I mean, how could I not remember what happened when I first met him? He hit me for freaking out about the cage.
"H-How do you remember that!?" Kaito exclaimed, "it's been awhile since I told you about that!"
"I have a good memory," I replied with a flat tone, "why wouldn't I remember the first time you hit me...?"
"You're just being plain salty now, (y/n), it should be water under the bridge now," Kaito replied, "but in any case, I still have a story to tell!"
Kaito decided to start off by saying that the universe was harsh, and that people had to prepare for any given situation. I found that pretty accurate... because I still felt like the universe wanted me gone...
"The first two years is basic training... It's pretty straightforward. You learn the skills needed to be an astronaut!" Kaito explained, "medicine, aeronautical engineering, scuba diving, linguistics, survival training... you pretty much just gotta master everything."
This was pretty interesting in a sense, getting Kaito's view on what it was like to be training. He wasn't even in college yet, but he was thinking about the future for himself. My future though, I knew what that was going to be. Even if the world was actually worse off than we thought, I would still help Rantaro find his sisters.
"So you have to prepare for each situation that could happen?" I asked in response.
"Exactly!" Kaito replied, "there are emergencies that can happen in space where I would have to make an unexpected return."
"That makes it more obvious to me that astronauts risk their lives just to go into space," I replied, "I mean anything can happen. There could be an issue with the rocket, or an issue with space suits."
"You're right," Kaito replied, "(y/n) you really do know some possibilities on what could happen up there. I'm impressed."
"Hey, Kaito, do you have any worried when it comes to your dream of going into space?" I asked.
In response to that, Kaito seemed to just smile at me, giving me a thumbs up like he always did. He always used this expression to help cheer Shuichi, Maki, and I on during training as well.
"Nah, not really!" Kaito exclaimed, "I just want to get up there as fast as I can!"
"Where do you plan on training?" I asked.
"Good question, sidekick! There is a pretty famous astronaut training ground that is located at the bottom of the ocean," Kaito explained, "that one however is a little different from basic training."
My eyes widened slightly in shock when Kaito informed me that there was a training ground that was located at the bottom of the ocean. That sounded pretty cool. I was sure that I would've found out more about it if I just watched the news.
"Alright! Pop quiz!" What's the most important thing an astronaut needs!?" Kaito asked, putting his two fists together.
I decided I would take some time to think about this. There were many things that went into being an astronaut. A few choices on what I could say went through my head. Those choices were, a healthy body, communication, passion, perseverance, commitment, and the smarts for it.
While having a few choices to say was nice, I was kinda torn between passion and communication. In order to go into a future profession, a passion is needed in order to motivate that person to do their best to become what they want to become.
In the case of communication, as an astronaut, it's important to use communication. Communication is something that would be very important, considering the risks involved. I still didn't know which one of those two would be the right answer.
"I'm torn between two answers, so I'll just say them both..." I muttered, "passion, and communication..."
"I mean passion is a good point," Kaito explained, "passion is important because you need passion to
enter a profession you like. Passion is what drives one to do their best. Your second answer was the correct one though! I would mark down a few points for giving two answers, but whatever."
I gave a slight deadpanned look in response to Kaito's words. It was almost like he was a teacher actually grading me for a test. This was a school we were in, but we didn't actually have classes, yet Kaito was still acting like a teacher.
"Communication is the most important thing for an astronaut! Teamwork isn't just important in our case here!" Kaito exclaimed, "the universe is a frontier that the people of the world challenge together! That even applies here! Since we need to work together, communication is vital!"
"I do agree that that's important," I laughed nervously, "I mean we've been trying to work together ever since we've arrived here."
"Right?" Kaito asked in response, "they check that in the recruitment exam. That's why language training is vital. It makes up a fourth of basic training."
"I can see why," I laughed.
"Of course you can, sidekick! I hope you know that I can speak Japanese, English, and Russian all fluently!" Kaito exclaimed, "I didn't just learn the languages, I had to learn about each culture, too."
It seemed that in away, I didn't actually understand how amazing Kaito was. When he expressed to me that he could speak these languages as well as learning about the cultures that came with each one... he defiantly has what it takes to be an astronaut... he very well deserved his ultimate title.
"Damn it! I want to start my training routine again! The universe is getting away from me!" Kaito exclaimed, "the world needs this Luminary of the Stars to shine even brighter!"
With what was going on with the meteorites... I had no idea if that would be possible. I didn't want to tell him that because if that. We both went out separate ways after that, but I felt like I got to know more about Kaito than I did when we started training. I was very happy about that.
I found myself back in my dorm room, wondering what I should do now. I wondered who I should hang out with again. I did have some time left after all. My mind instantly drifted to a certain person.
Maybe Ryoma would be interested in hanging out with me. I told him that I wanted to be his friend, and help be a reason for him to live. If I just brushed him off, that wouldn't be very possible. I wanted to be friends with everyone.
It was decided for me after that. I would choose to hang out with Ryoma now. Getting out my trusty Monopad, I decided to check the map to see where he could be. It still felt a bit weird that this gave locations. It felt a bit stalkerish, but I was sure that all of the Monopads had this feature.
I decided to check the dormitory building first, like what I always did first. I saw an all too familiar glowing yellow dot on top of what was Ryoma's dorm room. Chances were, he was in there. No one else would be in Ryoma's room aside from him. That much was always obvious.
Putting away my Monopad for the time being, I decided to head over to Ryoma's dorm room. I was honestly hoping that he would want to hang out, at least for a little bit. While I was able to bring him back a few days ago, I knew that chances were, it would take some time for him to open up, and I knew that all too well.
It was always hard to get over things that happened in the past, and I knew that. Ryoma was the same way, and while I didn't know much about his past, he wanted to hide it from everyone. Hopefully he could open up to me... hopefully I could give him the help that the others have been giving me.
Ryoma's room was on the bottom floor of the dormitory. Mine dorm room was located on the first floor as well, similar to Shuichi, Kaede, and Rantaro. Having a dorm room on a lower floor made it easier not to make any noise during the night. The walls weren't exactly soundproof.
I made my way to Ryoma's dorm, before ringing the doorbell that each of the rooms had. In the beginning, I was always taken off guard by the loud doorbell, but now I was used to this. After a few seconds, Ryoma didn't answer, so I decided to ring his doorbell again.
A few seconds later, I heard a clicking sound come from the door. Almost instantly after that, I heard the sound of the door opening. Ryoma slowly stepped out of his room. His expression seemed to brighten up a little bit, but it wasn't enough to be very noticeable.
Even if his expression wouldn't be that noticeable to some other people, I noticed it. I was honestly happy that Ryoma was starting to be happier. Hopefully he wasn't feeling forced to be happier.
"(y/n), what brings you here?" Ryoma asked.
"I was wondering if you wanted to hang out, and maybe talk for a little bit..." I replied with a slightly nervous expression.
"I don't exactly have anything better to do, so yeah, that sounds fine," Ryoma replied, "and plus, you've still been keeping your word, and that's admirable... so, what do you want to know?"
"Who said I wanted to know anything?" I asked in response, "I just want to get to know you more... because friends should know more about each other, right?"
"I guess that's true," Ryoma replied, "so let's just talk."
After Ryoma said that, we both spent some time talking to each other. It seemed like both him and I were getting closer as friends. I had the same feeling when Ryoma agreed to join us for nighttime training, curtesy of Kaito. Hopefully, the closer we got as friends, the more I'd be able to know on why he was so suicidal.
I decided to look for a gift for Ryoma. I always did this, so it was a habit of mine now. I checked my inventory of things I've received from the school store. Everything I bought was random, and like a lottery to get certain items.
I looked through some of the things I had. There was one specific thing I was looking for. I always saw Ryoma having this certain type of item on him at all times, so I knew it would be something he'd enjoy. I knew I had at least one of these items in my inventory.
The specific item I was looking for were the candy cigarettes. I knew that Ryoma always had at least one of those on him at all times, I thought a pack of them would make him happy. When I found that item in my inventory, I took it out and presented it to him.
When Ryoma saw what was in my hands, he seemed to have a slightly shocked expression on his face. After that point, he seemed to smile, only slightly. I knew very well that Ryoma had a harder time showing when he was happy, and I did understand that. I just wanted to help him be happier.
"If you're giving me this...you really get me, huh?" Ryoma asked, "I'm sorry, but I don't have anything I can give you right now... is that okay? You are kinda strange for someone who's supposed to be an anime fan."
"I gave you those because I always notice that you have candy cigarettes on you. They seem to put you more at ease, and I wanted to give you something that would make you happy," I replied.
"Well, you did a pretty good job of doing that," Ryoma replied, "you really do have outstanding observation skills."
I laughed nervously in response to that. In all honesty, I still wasn't used to being counted on. It was like some sort of weird dream that I wasn't waking up from. Hopefully nothing bad would happen while we talked.
Ryoma didn't seem to like wandering around much, and he was more than content to be standing in front of his room. That's where we decided to hang out, and hopefully once he opened up more, he'd be interested in hanging out somewhere else.
"So, what did you want to come and talk to me about?" Ryoma asked, "did you come to talk to me in hopes of telling you how I killed the mafia?"
My eyes widened slightly in shock when I heard him ask me that. That wasn't the reason I came to hang out with him. The reason I did was because I wanted to get to know him.
"No, of course not!" I exclaimed in response, "like I said, I'm not going to judge you! I wanted to get to know you more, not your past."
"If you want to know a fact about me, then why don't you try guessing," Ryoma replied, "I mean Kaede did have a conversation with me about it when she decided to spend some time with me back when we first got here."
I thought for a moment. I was guessing that Ryoma was referring to something he probably liked. I knew tennis was off the table, but I did have a feeling he might still enjoy the game. Ryoma never really voiced interests, so this was a bit hard.
"I-I'm sorry but I can't think of anything, it seems like the guesses are endless..." I laughed nervously.
"That's alright," Ryoma replied, "well, I have a soft spot for a certain kind of animal. Once you start petting one, you forget all of your worries... why don't you try guessing what animal that would be..."
I took another moment to think. Ryoma gave the description of a cure and fluffy animal. Then thought that instantly came to mind was a cat. Cats were so cute and fluffy. It felt like their purr could take away all stress and anxiety.
"So you like cats too?" I asked, "there's this cute scene in an anime called Fruits Basket, where Kyo, the cat zodiac attracts many cats, and it's so funny, and adorable, I just squeal! Also, did you know when a cat purrs, it means they are trying to heal you!?"
"Whoa there, try to cool down a bit," Ryoma replied with a nervous sweat forming on his face, "but yes, I do like cats. I used to own one."
"I can see why," I replied with a small smile, "I mean just mentioning that fact about yourself made you look more at ease... your soft spot for animals really does show, and I think it's pretty amazing."
"You think what you want," Ryoma replied, "in any case though, when I went to prison, I someone I knew take care of it."
"That makes sense..." I muttered as I looked down slightly.
"I used to always pet him after practice," Ryoma explained, "my cat was both calm and smart. He'd always know when I was tired, and because of that, he'd come over and let me pet him."
"Awww, that's so sweet," I replied with a small smile.
"He also had a nice, fluffy coat... watching him go wild over catnip calmed me down," Ryoma replied.
I honestly could feel myself smile even more. Even though it didn't seem to be much, Ryoma was still opening up something about himself. Honestly, if Ryoma had such a good relationship with his cat, then that cat must miss him very much. That's what I thought anyway.
"I bet your cat misses you," I told Ryoma, "I'm pretty sure he is waiting for you to come back."
"Kaede said something very similar," Ryoma replied, "I kinda told her that I thought that a cat forgets their gratitude after three days, but she told me it was a myth."
"Well Kaede is right about that," I replied, "I don't think a cat would forget someone who's given them lots of love throughout their life."
"I swear, you and Kaede both..." Ryoma muttered, "I will tell you the same thing I told her. The first thing I do once I get out of prison...is try and go get him."
"Please tell me that you'll let me see your cat sometime," I told him, "I do love cats too, and I think it'll be very wholesome to see you play with him."
"I guess I can let you," Ryoma replied, "anyway, it was nice talking about this. Even though you and Kaede said similar things, you have a different thought process. It's a nice thought to know that you both were people who didn't want to give up on me."
After Ryoma said that, he retreated back into his room, and I decided I'd go back to mine. I knew there was still time left to hang out with one more person. There was still time left in the day, and I didn't want it to go to waste.
I took a moment to think about hanging out with Ryoma. Even though it wasn't a long time that we hang out, I still got to know more about him. That was nice, and honestly. I was looking forward to getting to know him more. That was the truth. Ryoma was a lot nicer and thoughtful than some of the others thought. It was the same situation with Maki as well. Hopefully, just hopefully, Ryoma would get his confidence back.

Heyo! This is your beloved author with two free time events of characters that didn't have a free time event yet! Like I said, I'm trying to get to every character I can, considering the plot thus far.

'Press F for Jealous Rantaro'

I've been trying to keep up with updates despite insomnia (especially on class days). I hope this one was worth the wait. And also I may or may not have worked with seafood this week, and I have something important to say.

"TERUTERU, I'M COMING FOR YOUR BRAND!"

I swear I'm just a cringy author right now. In any case, there's still a couple of months for Fanart predictions for chapter five. Also, next chapter will focus on the last free time event of that specific dat, as well as deal with nighttime training. We are getting into the VR soon!  I really hope you all enjoyed this chapter, and I'll see y'all next week! Ciao!- yuki_no_fuyu
