Chapter 33: That Smirk

Sakura's POV
I was beginning to tap my foot and chew on my finger nails. Yes, the nails that took me three months to grow out, are now bitten to the skin. Mom hasn't showed up, and the school day is already almost over. Kurenai-Sensei has been standing out here with me the whole time.
I hear a sigh escape from her and I look back. She's sitting down on the stairs leading up to the main doors of the school. There's a bored look on her face and her hands are placed professionally on her lap.
"I think I'll just walk." I say, and begin my way down the other set up steps.
"Wait, Sakura. Are you sure you'll be okay?" She asks in a motherly-tone.
I look back at her, with my hand firmly placed on the strap of my shoulder bag. I nod and put on a fake smile, "Yes, ma'am. I'm sorry for the concern and trouble I've caused. Have a nice weekend."
I turn around, and begin walking. My fake smile immedietly turns into a frown and all I'm thinking is where is she? She's always on time, if not early. I would've expected her to be at the school in seven minutes tops.
I push the thought aside and keep making my journey back home. After about ten minutes of the constant sound of leaves crunching under my shoes, I have this sudden urge to run home to make sure she's okay. If she still was on her way to pick me from school, her car would've passed me by now. A rush of concern and curiosity hits me and I fasten my pace.
In the distance, I can see the large house that seems to stand out among the rest. It's probably due to the fact that every other house on the block is a very dull, gray color, but our house is yellow. Makes sense.
I begin walking faster and faster, never stopping to catch my breath, until I stop in my tracks near the driveway. The brightness and cleanliness of what's infront of me made my stomach turn. There was a very shiny, black SUV parked beside my mother's car. Thoughts of what might be happening are invading my mind. Could someone in our family have died again, and they are sending an agent or someone to infrom us? Could this be secret services of some sort, arresting my mom for something she didn't do? Could she have maybe found a new boyfriend, and he owns a really nice vehicle that he probably calls his 'precious baby'?
I don't know how long I was standing there, but I was back in save-my-mom-mode. I took long strides to the door, and didn't knock politely like I should if a visitor arrived. My hand gripped the doorknob, and I twisted it in one quick motion. I flung the door open and slightly gasp.
I felt happy for a second, but meeting his eyes gave me that false hope I have been dreading for two months. That smirk. That devilous, arrogant, egotistical smirk of his. That smirk that made me want to slap him over and over again, without stopping.
Gaara was there, mom was there, and Deidara was there. They were all sitting around the coffee table. No tea cups, no snacks, just papers, and my mother's tear-stained face. I was at a loss for words. I still had no idea what was going on.
But then something happened.
Gaara gave me the most pity-like expression. It was one of those kinds of expressions that said sorry-but-your-life-is-going-to-be-a-living-hell-and-I'm-apart-of-it. That expression made me gulp.
"So it's settled, Mrs. Haruno." Deidara said, standing up and straightening his jacket. Gaara followed suit and stood up with him.
Deidara's eyes met mine, and he smiled an almost victorious smile, "You two have quite a bit to talk about. Come, Gaara."
I still stood at the door way, confused and lost. Deidara didn't stop in front of me. He just towered over me for a split second and flashed me that smirk. Then there was Gaara, who kept his head down, not wanting to meet my gaze or explain anything to me.
I hear a car engine start, and the slight squeal of tires. I knew they were gone.
My attention went to my lovely mother. Her sympathetic, sweet, smile became a regretful, teary frown.
I slapped my hands against my thighs and casually said, "What's going on?"
"I-I'm sorry I did this to you sweetie, but I had to."
Now I'm worried.
I stood infront of her, and bent down to her level on the couch, trying to look into her eyes.
"Mom, why did Deidara come here?" I ask, my face was in serious mode now.
She was silent. It looked like she was trying to figure out what to say next.
My gaze went to the papers on the coffee table, and I picked one up. It had a dollar sign and many numbers on it.
I kept staring at the paper, and said in a very serious tone, "Mom, what the hell is this?"
I heard her sniffle.
"That's how much money Deidara can take from us."
I grit my teeth, "What?"
"Sweetie. . . I'm so sorry."
"What's going on, Mom?! Stop keeping whatever's happening from me!" I yell.
Her head shot up, with her face blank, "Deidara demands you marry him in one month from today."
My world crumbled from there.
