Chapter 47. Glass Box

I was hunched over myself, sitting on the floor in the glass box that I am trapped inside of. My insides felt like they were about to fall out, and I couldn’t stop crying. I just watched one of my best friends die— right in front of me, and it was all of my fault.

Allison is dead because of me.

The Nogitsune got inside of me and summoned the Oni up to kill her because I couldn’t keep it out.

The box that I’m trapped in is setting in the middle of that expansive white room that Stiles and the Nogitsune had been in when we entered his mind. The Nemeton sat a few feet away from me, but for some reason I’m stuck in this box.

I can see and hear and feel everything that my body is doing, but I have no control. It’s one of the most terrifying things I have ever experienced. I just hope that the Nogitsune doesn’t know what I have planned for him, for what I have planned for us.

(Third Person Pov)

“Stiles said that it was the Nemeton that kept it trapped.” Scott said as he followed after Deaton through the Animal Clinic. Lydia was behind him, still in shock after everything that has happened in the past 12 hours.

Deaton sighed, “The problem is this isn’t even a person you’re fighting. Yes, it’s Kasey’s body, but the Nogitsune is a spirit that has now become a part of her.”

“Somone caught it once. Someone can do it again, right?” Lydia asked hopefully.

The atmosphere between Scott and Lydia was thick with tension. They both knew that even though Allison was dead, they had to move on to try and save Kasey. They were literally out of time and were trying to work with what little options they have left.

Lydia wanted to do what she couldn’t do for her best friend; save her.

Scott wanted to try and keep his promise that he made to her; to keep her safe.

“I don’t know. This thing was trapped a long time ago, before the Nemeton was cut down. It doesn’t have the same power anymore, plus the Nogitsune wasn’t controlling an Admonere either. He is so much stronger with Kasey’s abilities than he was before.” Deaton explained further, trying to get through Scott’s and Lydia’s heads that this was not going to be an easy task.

Scott glanced at Deaton hopefully, “If I bite her— and she makes the transition, it’s going to leave her, right?”

“Theoretically.” Deaton nodded.

“So, when it leaves here— where can we put it? Is there anything that has enough power to hold it? Like the Nemeton used to?” Scott asked, praying that maybe he was able to conjure up a logical solution to this whole thing.

Deaton let out a breath, “Possibly. When the tree was whole it’s wood was sometimes used to contain powerful objects. But those objects are very rare.”

“Wait a second. Powerful objects? Like an alpha’s claws?” Lydia questioned. She had the image of the cylindrical wooden case that Talia’s claws had been in. The claws that Peter had asked her to use to retrieve information that had been taken from him.

It was a long shot to make the connection, but she had a gut feeling that it was correct.

“Which alpha?” Deaton inquired, his eyebrows raising in question.

Lydia swallowed, “Tale Hale. Peter had them in this wooden box with a triskele carved on the lid. What if it was made from the Nemeton?”

“It was.” Deaton dead-panned, his eyes falling to the floor.

Scott whipped his head to the side hopefully. It felt like they were finally making some progress with the rescue mission. “How do you know?” he asked quickly.

Deaton glanced up at him, “Because I made it.”

Meanwhile, in the lobby of Beacon Hills General Hospital, Kasey McCall was walking through the doorway towards the receptionist desk. The effects of having the Nogitsune inside of her were already showing, the skin under her eyes was stained red, her hair wasn’t straight from the heat of her straightener and her natural curls were back, her lips were starting to chap and her skin had paled considerably.

The man working the desk at the moment was occupying himself with paper work as Kasey strolled up to the desk. She smirked as she cleared her throat, “Hi there.” she greeted.

Hissing and snarling echoed around the lobby as the Oni appeared behind her, ready to do just as she instructed. The nurse glanced up to see what she needed, and stumbled back when he saw the Oni.

“Could you page my mother for me please?” she asked with a grin. The Nurse didn’t have time to do anything before the Oni acted on it’s command from the Nogitsune and shoved the sword through the desk, managing to impale the nurse.

As the sword penetrated the skin, blood spurted onto the wall. The Oni withdrew his sword and the lights began to flicker. Kasey shook her head from side to side as the nurse pressed his hands to his torso and fell to the floor.

The phone on the desk began to ring, and there was no one available to answer. Kasey chuckled as she glanced at the Oni that had just possibly killed the nurse, “Well, I guess I’ll just have to find her myself.”

The hallway of the the hospital was complete and utter chaos as the Oni stormed through, not caring whom they were slicing open with their swords. The lights were flickering rapidly as numerous bodies hit the floor, blood seeping out of their wounds and onto the white tile floor.

Kasey was grinning as she followed behind the Oni, walking through the path of strife and pain. The Nogitsune could feel it seeping into it’s pores as it flicked on the switch in Kasey’s mind, letting her suck all of it in like a vacuum.

The Nogitsune knew what it wanted to do— it knew what it’s plans were going to be from the get go. There were several Oni at the Sheriff Station, causing more havoc.

Deputies were firing off shots as they attempted to defend themselves against the onslaught from the Oni. Deputy Parrish knew that he had been wrong to make jokes about Agent McCall’s description of the dangerous “ninja” that had attacked him, for that it what he was fighting for his life right now.

Back at the hospital, Melissa McCall was speaking to her ex-husband as they strolled through the halls. The flickering lights momentarily derailing their conversation. “So I tell Scott and Kasey that his dad went back to San Francisco, says he’s sorry, but he didn’t have time to say goodbye?” Melissa asked.

Rafael nodded, “Right. Then I’ll send a follow-up email or something.”

“You’re an idiot.” Melissa dead-panned.

She knew that Scott and Kasey were both being hard on Rafael, but she couldn’t blame them. He had left and very rarely gave a reason as to why he couldn’t see them anymore. Her kids were her pride and joy, but she wished that they would give him a chance to explain.

They stood outside of the elevator as Rafael glanced at her in confusion, “Why? What’s wrong with that?”

As the elevator dinged and the doors slid open Melissa rolled her eyes and slid into the elevator, Rafael sighed before following after her. He knew that it wasn’t the best idea, especially considering that Kasey was hell bent on shutting him out for the rest of her life.

“Raf, you say that you want a relationship with your kids. You can’t just bail after one fight with Scott—“

He cut her off, “Kasey won’t even give me the time of day. I can’t say anything to her without her flipping it around on me. She hates me.”

“She doesn’t hate you. And neither does Scott, they just want you to try harder.” Melissa clarified.

Rafael glanced down at the floor, he knew she was right. Melissa was always right. It was one of the things that he had fallen in love with, she always knew what to say or do in the most trying of times.

The elevator came to an abrupt stop, the lights flickering once again. Rafael didn’t hesitate to draw his gun, flashbacks of when he had been attacked by an Oni were running through his mind.

Melissa glanced around in confusion, “What’s going on?”

“I don’t know.” he mumbled.

The doors dinged again and they slid open. Screams poured into the elevator and Rafael spun around fearfully. An Oni was standing right by the door, and Rafael panicked as he shoved Melissa back.

He shot at the two Oni before slamming his hand on the button to take the elevator anywhere but this floor. As the doors slid to a close, Rafael let out a sigh of relief and turned around— only to find Melissa laying on the floor, her thigh slashed open and seeping blood onto the floor of the elevator. Black smoke started evaporating out of the gash.

The deputies in the police station weren’t holding up much better. Slowly, but surely, each one of them had been touched by the blade of an Oni. Including Sheriff Stilinski.

“Derek’s got the trickle box. He’s gonna meet us.” Scott said as he pulled his cell phone away from his ear.

Lydia was feeling light headed. Distant voices were whispering to her and suddenly her body began to sway from side to side and she nearly toppled over, thankfully Scott had been watching her and he managed to catch her.

“What’s wrong?” Deaton asked in a panic.

The strawberry blond looked at Scott, “Something’s happening. I had this sudden rushing feeling, like we’re running out of time.”

“Yeah,” Stiles’ voice supplied.

Scott, Lydia, and Deaton both had no idea that he had decided to show up. The last they knew, he was still at Kira’s house—trying to stay safe. He was getting weaker and weaker by the moment. But he was determined to use every ounce of strength he had left to save the love of his life.

Stiles was leaning against Kira, for he couldn’t stand up on his own without toppling over, “Yeah, I kind of got that feeling too.”

He looked just as bad as Kasey. The skin under his eyes was red. His skin was sickly pale. His fingers wrapped around the door frame as he looked at Scott. This was it. This was the only chance they were going to have to save Kasey.

And Stiles’ wasn’t going to let something bad happen to her again— not this time.

Scott had to drive Stiles’ jeep to the school. It felt wrong to them. Stiles usually drives, Scott sits in the front passenger and then there’s Kasey— in the back, complaining about how she should be in the front since Stiles’ is in love with her.

He never told her that the reason he liked for her to sit in the back seat was because the seat belt in the front passenger didn’t always stay locked in place.

When they exited the jeep, Stiles had to stumbled over to the railing for support. Lydia went to him instantly, helping him stand upright. She knew how it felt to be completely and utterly useless in a situation and she hated it.

Kira slammed the door shut and looked to Scott for what to do next. This was it. Kasey was here, with the Oni. The Nogitsune was somewhere inside of the school, and Kasey was somewhere inside of her head.

As they got to the door of the school, the reality of the situation was starting to settle in. Kira was nervously bouncing around, and Stiles was trying to not let his heart collapse in on itself.

“Guys, wait.” Stiles said quickly.

Scott halted in his advance into the school and spun around to look at Stiles, not knowing if he was about to pass out or not.

He let out a nervous breath, “I know that you all are thinking that I’m connected to Kasey and that’s why it looks like I’m dying. And I also know that you want to save me too, and I just want you guys to not worry about me. When we walk through this door— it’s Kasey that we’re going to worry about. It’s my fault that this happened to her, and I’m not going to let her die because of me, alright? Stick with the plan and don’t change it.”

Nobody noticed Kira wince.

Scott shook his head from side to side, “That plan is to save both of you. That’s the plan I’m going with.”

“Scott,” Stiles said loudly as he went to pull the door open, “if it comes down to me and her, you need to choose her. You need to choose her every single time, okay?”

The group fell silent. Lydia wanted to draw attention to the fact that Kasey had said pretty much the same thing to Scott and her about keeping Stiles alive, but she didn’t. Both Stiles and Kasey were so adamant on keeping the other alive, that they held do regard for the position that they were putting Scott and Lydia in.

“Stiles—“

“No don’t ‘Stlies’ me. I need you to promise me this okay? If there is one thing that I need you to promise me for the rest of my life, it’s that you’re going to choose her. You need to chose her.” Stiles rushed out in a panic.

Scott wants to save everyone, it’s a character flaw. He wants to help the people that he cares about. Kasey is his sister and he loves her and would do anything for her, but Stiles is his brother. He doesn’t know how to assure Stiles that he’ll choose Kasey over him when it causes him severe anxiety just thinking about leaving Stiles without any protection.

Stiles has been there with Scott for as long as he can remember, stiles has supported him and gone through everything with him. Scott loved Stiles just as much as he loved Kasey, and he couldn’t pick between them.

And that’s why he’s going to save them both.

“I’m not going to have to.” Scott stated in confidence.

Stiles didn’t want to argue with Scott, or waste any more time. So, he nodded once and prayed that if it came down to it, Scott would save Kasey, just like Stiles wanted.
