Chapter 25: The Power of Shadow
Rogan had managed to muster a force of thirty riders, even though the Resistance had over one hundred riders, it was a good idea to have a large backup force. Reflamen and I decided to join in, it would be the first time we had fought together and we needed the experience.
Derrick was beside us, on Shadowrang.
"You know, Rogan," said Derrick, "You don't need to send all these extra riders."
Rogan raised his eyebrow. Derrick just shook his head and looked back at the dragons that were fast approaching. Shadowrang was prancing nervously from one foot to the other. I could feel the nervousness and excitment coming from Reflamen, and from myself.
"Ready!" yelled Reflamen, "Fly!"
Reflamen jumped of the edge of the cliff, with his wings open. He took one flap, then another, then we were flying.
'Blade or staff?' I asked Reflamen.
'Start with staff, it might be easier to use on my back,' replied Reflamen.
I summoned my blades to my hands, then connected the hilts, turning them into one flaming staff. I gripped the staff with both hands, and cast a spell to keep me on my dragon.
'That spell might ware you out during the fight,' said Reflamen.
'Well I can't keep my hands on your horns and I might fall,' I replied.
'Well, don't put to much energy into it,' said Reflamen.
Shadowrang was flying right beside us. He was tiny compared to Reflamen but that didn't make him any less terrifiying. He probably stood out in all the other dragons, for he was the only black dragon there. Derrick was on his back, with his shadow blade out. Already the blade was letting off drifts of shadow.
It took almost a minute until we met up with enemy. All the dragons stopped where they were. Rogan wasn't with us so Leo had taken command. He was on his gigantic yellow dragon, Galactor.
"What are you doing here?" he yelled out, "You know you can't win with only twenty riders, so why are you here?"
One of the dragons came forth. It was Leren.
'Oh great, everything is falling apart,' I said.
"We saw a shadow dragon coming this way," said Leren, "We thought it was going to destroy your camp, obviously not."
He over my way, at Derrick. Shadowrang growled.
"Why don't you come with us, Shadow rider," said Leren, "You know you don't belong here."
Derrick laughed, "As soon as you saw me you instantly thought I was one of you guys, ha! I wouldn't join you for all the money in the world."
Leren looked surprised, very surprised, "Derrick?"
Shadowrang flew forward, "Yes Leren, it's me."
Leren smiled, "So you finally got a dragon Derrick, and a very powerful one as well. Now that I know who you are, I guess I'll have to wait for you to join us, I know you will. I'm honestly impressed, and slightly jealous. You've got the shadow blade and a shadow dragon."
"Don't be to dissapointed," said Derrick, "When I don't come."
Leren just shook his head, "It's a pitty really, I didn't want you to die."
I heard a movement of wings from below. I looked down and almost fell of Reflamen in surprise.
"They're below us!" I yelled.
Relfamen rose a few metres then dove headfirst down towards the dragons. I brandished my staff and as a dragon came past I struck at it from the side. My staff cut right throught the dragons scales and into its stomach. It screeched in pain before dropping with its rider.
Reflamen rolled out of the way of another dragon and I struck again, this time I went of the head, cutting through the dragon's neck, almost cutting its head off. The dragon also dropped. My staff instantly came back arounf to block a sword from the side. I swung the other side around and cut the of the riders arm.
'This staff is a lot hotter then I realised,' I said.
'I know,' replied Relfamen as he rolled out of the way of another dragon, then struck at its belly from with his claws. I finished the dragon of with by cutting of its wing.
Before long we had reache the bottom of the group. Reflamen straightened out from his dive then looked out. I large fight had broken out. Dragons were everywhere. I could only distinguish the Resistance riders becuase of the fact they wore leather clothes. The king's men wore silver chainmail with his simble on them, a dark trident with two forks instead of three. The only rider that didn't where either of the uniforms, was Derrick, but he was very easy to recognize because of the shadow dragon below him.
Derrick fought like a beast. Every dragon around him were ingolfed with shadow, but instead of falling, they were held in mid air. I knew Derrick had refrained from killing them, and had just trapped them within a shadow ball, knocking them uncosciuos.
Shadowrang wsa also doing very well. His scales had seemed to become black smoke, and every time he opened his mouth a fountain of shadow erupted, trapping his victims in darkness, but none of them ever died.
'Come on Derrick, consintrate,' said Relfamen.
'I shook my head, sorry, lets go,' I said.
Reflamen started to rise towards the fight. I separated my staff back into my two swords. For some reason killing dragons with heat felt very wrong. As I went back into fight, my swords seemed to go on over drive. I blocked three swords within the space of a second. I then twurled around and cut of someones head. Reflamen's tale came around and hit the dragon in the head, snapping it. The rider fell first then the dagon soon after. I quickly blocked a sword stroke at Reflamen's kneck. Reflamen roled out of the way. Then unleashed a barrage of fire at the assailent. The dragon roared in pain and tried to get out of the torrent of fire. Reflamen increased the heat and eventually the dragon fell.
While he was taking care of them, I was busy blocking more fire from a different dragon. Luckily my sword adsorbed any fire sent toward them, so it was pretty easy, but the dragon kept on flying around, and keeping its distance, so it was impossible to get a shot at it. Reflamen suddenly turned around and unleashed his own barrel of fire. The dragon met it with his own and the two streams of fire met in the middle. I liked to call it a fire battle, it is when two dragons breath fire at each other and they clashed, the strongest dragon could push the fire back and into the other dragon. If a dragon lost a fire battle, it usually the las thing it ever saw.
The two dragons seemed very equal, no one seemed to be winning. I was about to add my own barrage of fire into the mix, with my swords, but the dragon was suddenly shrowded with shadow. Reflamen stopped his torrent of fire and Shadowrang flew into the picture.
"Hey!" yelled Derrick, "Looks like you need some help!"
"I had it all under control!" I replied smiling.
Derrick suddenly swung his sword and a sprial of shadow shot strait past us and into a dragon approaching from behing us. The dragon and rider were shrouded shadow and fell uncoscious.
"Yeah right!" replied Derrick.
I just sighed and looked back up at he battle. I was surprised to see a line of shadow trapped dragons leading up to where we were.
"Wow," was all I could say.
Reflamen swung around and started to make his way back towards the battle. Shadowrang followed. The first dragon was taken out with a burst of fire at the rider. The dragon then seemed, to get very angry, but Reflamen took care of him with a claw throught the head.
Shadowrang was swooping in all around us. It seemed every dragon he tutched was engolfed with shadow.
'How do you fight a force like that?' I said.
'WIth enough skill, and power, you should be able to avoid being captured in the shadow,' said Reflamen.
Reflamen twisted in the air, so he was above another dragon and rider, but he was upside down. I was glad I had cast the spell allowing me to stay on. I struck at the rider, cutting through his back. The rider and dragon cried out in unison. I then through my sword as hard as I could at the dragon. The sword got stuck in the dragon's skull, before disappearing in a swurl of flame. I summoned the sword back to my hand.
'Ha! It actually does work,' I said.
'Did you ever dought it would work?' said Reflamen.
'No, not really,' I replied.
I blocked a stroke aimed at Reflamens head, then struck down the assailent with my opposite sword.
'I love having duel swords!' I exclaimed.
Reflamen took down another dragon and rider before turning towards Leo and his dragon, who was surrounded in riders.
'We need to help him,' I said.
Relfamen angled himself towards the fight and charged in. He let loose a breath of extremely hot fire, killing a rider and dragon almost instantly. I swung my sword and let it cut into another riders back. Hearing him scream was the worst thing I had ever heard. I flinched.
'I think this is really getting to me,' I said, and it was.
Reflamen surched my mind that put a comforting feeling into my head, 'Don't worry, it'll be over soon.'
He struck out at another dragon, crushing its skull, and I finished of the dragon who's rider I had killed. Leo came out right next to us and swung his battle axe like he had nothing to loose, sometimes even scratching his dragon. Reflamen and I started to kill the riders surrounding him one by one. I was getting sick by the time we had finished.
'Don't worry,' said Reflamen, comfortingly, 'Back up is almost here.'
I looked up and sure enough an even larger force of our riders were coming towards us. The enemy was starting to retreat. I saw Shadowrang dive through a group of ten riders and turn trap them all in shadow.
'It's almost like freezing them in mid air,' said Reflamen in awe.
'Are you getting jealous,' I joked.
'NO... well maybe a little,' said Relfamen grudgingly.
I cast an electricity spell at the closest enemy dragon, killing them instantly. My swords suddenly twisted two block spell cast by another enemy rider. Reflamen started to make his way towards him, then the backup came flying in.
Sophire smashed into the dragon with her shoulder, crushing the rider on its back and the dragon's back itself. The dragon fell quickly.
Suddenly Leren yelled, "Retreat!"
He cast a spell that broke a lot of the shadow trapped riders and they started to fly away, as fast as they could without there riders falling off. Some of the Resistance started to give chase.
"Don't go after them, let them leave," said Rogan, "They are no threat."
I sighed with releaf. The battle was finally over. I dropped my swords, letting the disappear. I was exhausted. I canceled the spell holding me in place and almost slipped off Reflamen's back. I quickly gripped onto Reflamen's horns.
'It's finally over,' I thought.
