001. The Huntress

[ Tutorial type: cover ]
THE HUNTRESS

I'm actually really proud of this cover for once, probably because I tried a completely new style and it turned out ok (or have I got that horribly wrong)? Anyway, hopefully this cover won't be too complex.

This cover was made using photoshop, but I'm sure that it could be recreated with Pixlr, but without the PSDs, brushes, and text effect. Some of these will also not apply to Pixlr users because Pixlr will not have the right tools to do some of the steps. I'm really sorry c;

All resources that you'll need will be linked below in the comments. All rights go to their rightful owners, including the PNGs, PSDs, brushes, and textures.

STEPS

1. Open the two moonscape backgrounds and put them on your blank cover, dimensions 320 x 500 or 512 x 800. You will not see much of the background, but it is essential that it is there. Preferably have the moon on the left side of the cover so you will be able to see it later.

2. Add the Lucy Hale PNG, and do control + T (to transform) and make the PNG vaguely the same size as shown above.

3. Next we add the text. For 'The' I used Times New Roman in block capitals, font size 25, and for 'Huntress,' I used the font Dark11 which sadly you cannot download from Dafont, but you should easily be able to find it on other font websites. The font size was 58, and the colour I used was #c9a468.

4. Now for the text effect (it took me ages to figure it out c; ). Go to Layer > Layer Styles and click on 'Inner glow.' I have put a screenshot below of the settings I used. This will then outline your text.

5. For the effect that makes the text appear 'metallic,' click on Pattern Overlay. Once again, I have screen shot my settings shown below.

7. Now for the font under the text. This is in the font 'SF Movie Poster Regular,' which can be found on Dafont. To get the different sized text, capitalise the names and then don't capitalise the credits. Or you could go and find a movie poster credits template on google and use that :)

8. Next we do the eyes (I've sort of forgotten to do them, so please bear with me c; ). First, use the quick selection tool and select Lucy's eyes.

9. Now go to adjustments > Brightness/contrast. Click on this and drag the little arrows up to full brightness and contrast.

10. As you can see, not much has changed. So go to Select > reselect on the main toolbar. Then go back to adjustments > brightness/contrast and put the brightness on 150, and the contrast anywhere between 0 and 150 as you please.

11. Using a small eraser (with 100% hardness), rub away the parts of the adjustment layers that do not cover her eyes, like below. Be sure to do this on both brightness/contrast layers.

12. Next for the final effects! I have put a link in the comments to the brushes that I used. First of all, select a colour using the colour selector that is similar to the gold of Lucy's eyes. This will be the colour you will be using for the brushes. First we add the glitter. Go to layer > new > layer. Then find your brushes, and choose one of the glitter ones. Then make the brush size smaller. I think mine was 200-400px, and was originally 2200. Use it around the sides of the covers and around the text.

13. From the same set of brushes, select one of the fog brushes. Create a new layer. Keeping it the same colour, use this on the top half of the cover. Then change the opacity of this layer to 30%.

14. Next add the PSDs (which should be linked below). Place the 'Finding You' PSD on the bottom and change the opacity to 50%. The second PSD is by nightgate (night-gate on DeviantArt), which is used to single out yellow. Change the opacity to 20%. Finally, place the third PSD on top, and change the opacity to 60%.

15. You can add any extra text (like I have at the top of the cover) as you'd like. The font I used was Times New Roman in block capitals. And ta-da you're finished!

PLEASE

- If you have recreated this cover or used it to produce other covers, please post a link in the comments so I can see your beautiful artwork ;)

- If you've used this to create your own cover, then please do not upload and claim as yours if it looks very similar. However, if you've just used this to create a cover that doesn't look very similar, all I ask is that you give credit to me for the tutorial :)

I hope that this tutorial was ok xD I'm not the best at describing things, but I hope that the images helped. Next tutorial will be soon, and if you have any requests, comment them on the 'TUTORIALS' part of this book c;
