CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT, trust and betrayal
Later that day, Kate was one of the last ones to leave the dojo after practice. She had stayed behind to help clean up some of the stuff from practice. She was heading out to leave when Carson approached her. She was caught off guard by him and didn't really know what he was up to. "Oh, hi, Carson." She said with a small smile. "What's up?" She asked, glancing up at him curiously.
Carson's expression seemed neutral, though there was a glint of something in his eyes that Kate couldn't quite decipher. "Hey, Kate. I just wanted to talk to you for a moment," He says, his tone casual. "Do you have a minute?"
"Um, sure. What did you want to talk about?" Kate questioned, furrowing her eyebrows in confusion. She couldn't help but feel uneasy, sensing there was something going on here.
Carson pauses, seeming to consider his next words carefully. "Listen, Kate, I think you and I both know that you and Jack aren't right for each other."
Kate's eyes widen in surprise and confusion at Carson's statement. "I'm sorry, what?" She asks, feeling a mixture of disbelief and anger rising within her. "Where did that come from?"
Carson shrugs nonchalantly, though there's a calculating gleam in his eyes. "Well, it's obvious, isn't it? You two aren't meant to be together. I mean, think about it, Kate. You're always supporting Jack, but is he really supporting you? I mean, he's so focused on his martial arts and his tournaments, but what about you? Are your needs being met in this relationship?" Carson continues, taking a step closer to her.
Kate's eyes narrow and her lips purse in a tight line, her anger rising with every word that comes out of Carson's mouth. She was about to tell him off, but before she could say anything, Carson spoke up again. "I'm not trying to make you mad, Kate. I'm just looking out for you. I know you're a strong, independent woman, and you don't need a man to define your worth. But I also know that deep down, you feel like Jack doesn't care about you as much as you care about him. And it's not fair, is it? You're constantly supporting him, cheering him on, and putting his needs before yours, but where is the same level of dedication and care from him? Don't you think you deserve someone who will support and care about you just as much, if not more, than you do them?"
Kate's anger only intensifies as Carson continues speaking, and she can feel her heart pounding in her chest. "Carson, what are you even talking about?" Kate snaps, her tone sharp with frustration. "You don't know anything about my relationship with Jack. And who do you think you are, trying to interfere like this?"
Carson's demeanor remains calm, but there's a subtle smirk playing on his lips. "I'm just saying, Kate, you deserve better. You deserve someone who truly values you. Someone who sees your worth and treats you the way you deserve to be treated." He stepped closer to her, invading her personal space, and she felt her stomach twist into knots as she was overwhelmed by the conflicting emotions of anger, frustration, and unease. She took a step back, attempting to create some distance between them, but Carson followed her, keeping close.
Kate's fists clench at her sides, her patience wearing thin. "And who appointed you as the relationship expert? Last time I checked, my love life is none of your business."
"Kate, please, I'm not trying to hurt you." Carson insists in a more pleading tone. "I'm just trying to look out for you. I care about you, and I can't stand by and watch you waste your time with someone who doesn't appreciate you." He places his hand on her arm, and she flinches away, a flash of discomfort flickering across her face. "Jack is clearly more focused on his own ambitions than he is on your relationship, and that's not fair to you. You deserve someone who puts your needs and desires first."
Kate takes a step back, pulling her arm out of his grasp. Her mind is reeling, and she feels her heart racing in her chest. A flurry of thoughts and emotions rush through her, and she's struggling to process it all. She doesn't know what to make of Carson's words, or why he's so invested in her relationship with Jack. It doesn't make sense, and it makes her feel uneasy. "I don't have to listen to this," She snaps, glaring at Carson. "You don't know anything about my relationship or my feelings. And even if what you're saying is true, which it's not, that doesn't give you the right to try and break us up. I'm leaving." She turned to leave, but Carson grabbed her arm again, more firmly this time, causing Kate to freeze in her tracks. His grip is tight, and she can feel the heat of his touch searing into her skin. She looked up at him, her eyes flashing with a mixture of fear and defiance.
"Don't touch me." She hissed, trying to pull her arm out of his grip, but Carson's grip only tightens, and Kate felt a surge of panic rising within her. She tried to yank her arm away again, but Carson's hold remained firm.
"Everything alright here?"
Kate is so relieved to hear her cousin's voice. She and Carson glance over to see Rudy had stepped out of his office and was standing in the doorway, watching them closely. They were standing at an angle where he couldn't see the tight grip Carson had on her arm. "Yeah, we're fine." Carson said casually, though there was a hint of irritation in his tone.
Rudy's eyes narrowed and he glanced at Kate, and she gave a brief shake of her head, a silent signal to let him know everything was okay. "Good. I was just about to lock up and head out." Rudy told them.
"I was just leaving." Carson replied, finally releasing his hold on Kate. She let out a quiet sigh of relief, rubbing her arm where he had grabbed her. Carson gave her a smile and a wink before walking past her, his shoulder purposely bumping against hers. Kate watched him go, her stomach twisting in knots. She's filled with an unsettling feeling, and she can't help but wonder what he's up to.
Rudy glances at his younger cousin with concern, knowing she wasn't okay. He knew her since she was little and could sense when something was off. After Carson had left, Rudy steps closer to Kate. "Kat, I know you're not okay," Rudy said gently, his voice full of concern. "I saw the look on your face when Carson was talking to you, and I know something happened. You don't have to tell me everything, but I want you to know that I'm here for you."
Kate takes a deep breath, feeling the weight of the day finally settling on her shoulders. She appreciated Rudy's concern but wasn't quite ready to dive into the details. "Thanks, Rudy. It's just...Carson was saying some really personal things about my relationship with Jack, and it got really uncomfortable. He was overstepping and then he—" She glances down at her arm, still feeling the lingering heat from Carson's grip. "He wouldn't let go. I felt trapped."
Rudy's expression darkens as he processed her words. "I'm sorry you had to deal with that. It's not okay for anyone to make you feel uncomfortable or to invade your personal space like that. If you need to talk more or need anything at all, just let me know. And if you want to take a break or need some space, that's perfectly fine too."
Kate nods, grateful for Rudy's support. "I appreciate it, Rudy. I think I just need to clear my head for a bit. I'll be okay."
Rudy gave her a reassuring smile. "Take all the time you need. And if you decide you want to talk more about it, I'm here. And if you need me to keep an eye on Carson or handle anything with him, just let me know. Your safety and well-being are what matter most."
Kate smiles weakly, feeling a bit of relief from Rudy's offer of support. "Thanks, Rudy. I'll keep that in mind."
As Rudy finished locking up the dojo, Kate took a few moments to gather her things. She felt a mix of emotions—anger, confusion, and a lingering sense of unease. The encounter with Carson had left her shaken, but Rudy's presence and understanding gave her a bit of comfort. After Rudy had finished his tasks and the dojo was securely locked up, he walked with Kate to her car. They talked about lighter topics, trying to ease the tension, and Rudy's company helped her feel more grounded.
As Kate drove home, her mind was reeling. She couldn't stop thinking about what Carson had said, and how he had tried to get her to leave Jack. It didn't make any sense. She knew that Carson was up to something, but she couldn't quite figure out what it was. And the way he had grabbed her arm, it had left her feeling shaken and vulnerable. It's evident that Carson's intentions are not genuine and that he's trying to manipulate the situation to his advantage. She replayed their conversation over and over again in her mind, trying to make sense of it all. Why was Carson so insistent on trying to come between her and Jack? And what did he hope to gain from it?
While she pulled into her driveway and turned off the engine, Kate took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing thoughts. She knew she needed to talk to Jack about what had happened, but she wasn't sure how to bring it up. She didn't want to cause unnecessary drama or make him worry especially when he needed to keep focusing on practicing for the tournament coming up. She resolved to keep an eye on Carson and his motives, and she would make sure he didn't hurt anyone else.
She sighs and got out of the car, heading inside. She found her dad sitting at the couch, watching TV. He smiles when he noticed her walk in. "Hey, honey. You're home late, did practice run later than normal?" Tanner questioned.
"Something like that." She murmurs, not wanting to delve into the details with her dad just yet. "I'm just going to head up to bed. Long day." She forced a smile, hoping to reassure him.
Tanner nods understandingly. "Alright, sweetie. Get some rest." He then notices a faint bruise forming on her right arm and his eyes narrow in concern, but he didn't mention it. He knew she would talk to him when she was ready. "And if you ever need to talk about anything, you know I'm here for you, right?" He added, locking eyes with her again.
He didn't want her to feel like she couldn't come to him. He was her father and he would always be there for her no matter what. He knew that sometimes she kept things to herself, and he didn't want her to feel like she had to hide anything from him. He knew his daughter well enough to know that something was bothering her, and he wanted her to know that she could confide in him. He would always be there for her, and nothing would change that.
"Of course, dad. Thanks." She said softly, smiling at him before heading upstairs to her room.
Kate changes into her pajamas and sits down on her bed, still lost in thought. She can't help but feel guilty for keeping secrets from her father, especially after everything they've been through together. She knows he would understand and that he would be supportive, but she didn't want to burden him with her problems. She glanced down at the bruise on her arm, feeling a fresh wave of anger and unease wash over her. How could Carson have done that? It was obvious that his intentions weren't good, and it was clear that he was trying to manipulate the situation to his advantage. She couldn't believe how much he changed since the last time she saw him, but she knew she had to be careful around him.
She laid down in bed and grabbed her phone to text Jack good night, they always texted good morning and good night to each other, it was a habit that they've had for a long time. She knew she needed to tell him about Carson, but she wasn't sure how to bring it up. As her fingers hovered over the screen, she couldn't help but feel conflicted. Should she wait until the morning? She felt like she should, this wasn't a conversation to talk about over text or the phone. Or should she wait until after the tournament, knowing that Jack needed to keep his focus?
Kate let out a frustrated sigh and tossed her phone aside. She would figure it out in the morning. As she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep, she couldn't help but wonder what Carson was up to, and what his motives were. She had a feeling that it wasn't anything good, and she was determined to find out what he was hiding.
****
The next morning Kate still hadn't decided on what to do about Carson and how to bring it up to Jack or when. She was torn and didn't know what to do. She knew Jack needed to focus on the tournament and didn't want to distract him or worry him, but she also didn't want to keep this from him and would appreciate his comfort. She hesitated on if she should tell her dad about what happened. Kate woke up with a lingering sense of unease from the previous day's encounter with Carson. She had spent the night wrestling with her thoughts, unsure of the best course of action. Her internal struggle continued as she prepared for the day, trying to balance her concern for Jack with her need to address the unsettling situation with Carson.
She sat at the breakfast table, her mind preoccupied. Her dad, Tanner, noticed her distraction and offered a supportive smile. "Good morning, Kate. How'd you sleep?" He asked, trying to gauge her mood. He was concerned about his daughter and hoped she would open up to him. He had a feeling something had happened yesterday after practice. He couldn't help but notice the bruise on her arm that seemed new. He also had a feeling that something had happened to her yesterday. He hoped that Kate would confide in him, but he would wait patiently until she was ready to talk. He knew how strong-willed his daughter was and knew that pushing her wouldn't help. She would tell him in her own time.
Kate looks up from her plate, managing a small smile. "Morning, dad. I slept okay, just had a lot on my mind."
Tanner's expression softens with concern. "Anything you want to talk about? You know I'm here if you need to chat."
Kate hesitates, contemplating whether to share what happened with Carson. She appreciated her dad's offer, but she wasn't ready to delve into the details. "It's just...Some stuff at practice yesterday. Nothing major, really." She wasn't sure how much to reveal, not wanting to cause him any worry. "It's fine, though, don't worry."
Tanner could tell that Kate was holding back and he didn't want her to feel like she couldn't confide in him. He didn't push her for any more information and he understood that she wasn't ready to talk. But he was there if she needed him. "I understand. Just know that I'm here for you, whatever you need. Even if you just need someone to listen." He offers a reassuring smile. He loved his daughter more than anything, and he would do whatever he could to support her. "Is Jack stopping by this morning?" He asked, wanting to give her a change of subject. He was curious if Jack was still going to stop by. Usually, if Kate had Jack over, it would be a welcome distraction for her, and Tanner thought it might lift her spirits.
"I wish." Kate admits with a sigh. "No, he's got a lot on his plate with the tournament coming up. We've been trying to give him space to focus."
Tanner nods in understanding. "That's probably for the best. I'm sure he'll appreciate your support when the time comes." He says, hoping to offer some comfort. He could tell that Kate was worried about Jack and his upcoming tournament, and he wanted her to know that Jack would have her support no matter what. He also didn't want her to put her own needs on the back burner in the process. He knew that she cared deeply for Jack, but he hoped she would take care of herself too. "Remember, it's important to take care of yourself too, Kate. If you need a break or someone to talk to, I'm here."
Kate gave him a grateful smile, feeling reassured by his words. "Thanks, dad. I really appreciate it." She meant it. She was lucky to have her dad in her life, and his support meant a lot to her. "And thanks for breakfast. I should probably head out soon." She said, glancing at the clock when she noticed the time. "Don't want to be late."
"Of course." Tanner says, smiling warmly at her. "I'll give you a ride there. And if you need a ride home later, let me know." He offers. "And maybe we can do something this weekend?"
Kate smiles, appreciative of her dad's offer. "Sure. Sounds good."
The two of them finish up their breakfast and Tanner dropped Kate off at the dojo, wishing her luck with the day and reminding her that he was there if she needed him. With a quick goodbye, Kate got out of the car and makes her way inside. She took a deep breath, preparing herself for whatever the day would bring.
****
When Kate arrived at the dojo, she spotted Carson, and her stomach twisted in knots. She kept her distance, not wanting to have a repeat of their conversation the day before. As she watched him, she couldn't help but notice the way he interacted with the others, and it made her shudder because of how easily he could charm them. He was like a snake in the grass, and everyone else was oblivious to it. She knew she had to be careful around him, and she couldn't let him catch her off guard again.
As practice ended and the students began to leave, Carson approaches her again. She was expecting him and had prepared herself for it, not wanting a repeat of the day before. "Hey, Kate. Can we talk?" He asked, his voice casual, though his expression was unreadable.
"Sure, what's up?" Kate replied, keeping her tone neutral. She didn't want to give away any hint of her unease or discomfort.
"Look, I know you're mad at me, and I get it." Carson began, a hint of remorse in his tone. "But I was only trying to help, Kate. I really was. I care about you, and I don't want to see you getting hurt."
Kate scoffs, rolling her eyes. "Right. Well, next time, how about you keep your nose out of my relationship? I can take care of myself, thank you very much." She said, her tone sharp with irritation.
"C'mon, Kate, don't be like that." Carson insists, a hint of annoyance creeping into his tone. "I'm just trying to look out for you."
"I appreciate the gesture, but it's not necessary." Kate tells him firmly. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have things to do." She turned to leave, but Carson reached out and grabbed her arm, causing her to freeze in her tracks. Her pulse quickened, and her body tensed, the memory of the previous day's encounter flooding back to her.
"Kate, please." Carson pleads, his grip tightening around her arm. "I'm just trying to help you. Don't you see that? Jack isn't right for you, and I'm worried about what will happen to you if you stay with him. Please, just hear me out." Kate's heart pounded in her chest as Carson's grip tightened on her arm. She felt a surge of panic rising within her, but she forced herself to remain calm and composed. She couldn't let Carson see how much he was affecting her.
"Let go of me, Carson," Kate demands, her voice firm and unwavering. "I've already told you, I don't need your help, and I certainly don't need you telling me who's right for me."
Carson's expression darkens, and Kate could see a flicker of frustration in his eyes. But he didn't release her arm. Instead, he leans in closer, his voice dropping to a low whisper. "Kate, please, just listen to me," Carson urges, his tone pleading. "I know things haven't been easy for you lately, but I can make them better. I can take care of you in a way that Jack never could. You just have to give me a chance."
Kate's jaw tightened, and she fought to keep her emotions in check. She couldn't believe Carson's audacity, trying to manipulate her like this. She knew she had to get out of this situation before it escalated any further. Suddenly she felt a hand on her shoulder that soon moved as an arm wrapped around her shoulders.
"What's going on here?"
Kate was so relieved Jack had came back, she wasn't sure why he did, but she's glad he's there. "Jack." She said his name, but her voice was barely a whisper. Her gaze was locked with Carson's, and her heart was hammering in her chest. Jack's arm tightens around her shoulders, pulling her close, and she feels a wave of relief wash over her. She's safe now.
"Everything okay here, Kate?" Jack asked, his voice calm and controlled, but there was an undercurrent of anger that was evident.
Kate swallowed hard, her throat suddenly dry. She didn't trust herself to speak, so she simply nodded, her eyes still fixed on Carson. Carson's expression darkened, his jaw clenched tight. But he didn't say anything. He knew he was outnumbered, and he knew that Kate wouldn't listen to him. Not now, at least. Thankfully Jack could see how Thankfully Jack could see how shaken up she is, and he quickly intervened.
"I think you should leave." Jack told him, his tone firm and commanding.
Carson gave a short laugh, but it was devoid of any humor. "Fine. Have it your way. But this isn't over, Kate." He promises, his gaze still fixed on her. "We'll talk again. Soon."
"Yeah, no you won't." Jack cut in, his voice cold and resolute. "I think it's best if you stay away from Kate, Carson. If you have any respect for her, you'll listen to me and keep your distance."
Carson's eyes flickered with a mixture of anger and disbelief, but he said nothing further. With a final, lingering look at Kate, he turned on his heel and walked away, his footsteps echoing ominously through the dojo.
As Carson left, Kate felt a mix of relief and exhaustion. She leaned into Jack, grateful for his presence and support. Jack's arm remained around her shoulders, providing a comforting sense of security. The tension in Kate's body began to ease, though she still felt unsettled by the encounter.
"Are you okay?" Jack asks, his voice thick with concern. "Well, clearly not, but Kate, are you hurt? What happened with Carson?" Jack's eyes search hers, and he gently pulls her closer, his concern palpable. "Did he hurt you? If he did, I won't hesitate to beat the crap out of him." Jack's voice was a mix of concern and anger as he pulled Kate closer, his gaze unwavering and protective. He could feel the tension still gripping her and was ready to defend her if needed.
"He grabbed my arm...Kinda have a bruise now, but you don't have to worry about that," Kate says softly, trying to reassure Jack even though she can still feel the sting of the encounter. "It's more the way he tried to manipulate me that really got to me."
Jack's expression darkens, his jaw tightening with frustration and concern. "I'm sorry you had to go through that. No one should ever make you feel like that. I just want you to know that you don't have to face this alone. I'm here for you, no matter what." He says, his tone serious but full of warmth and care. He wants her to know that she can always count on him. "And I'm going to make sure Carson keeps his distance from you. If he tries anything like that again, I'll make sure he knows there will be consequences. You don't have to deal with this on your own."
Kate nods, feeling a surge of relief at Jack's determination. "Thank you, Jack. I appreciate it." She says, giving him a small smile. "I'll be fine though, don't worry." She doesn't want Jack to feel like he has to protect her all the time. She's strong enough to stand on her own, and she wants him to know that. "Besides, I can take care of myself just fine."
Jack couldn't help but smile. "Of course, I know you can, Rina. But even the strongest people need support sometimes. It doesn't make you weak to let other people in, and you shouldn't have to go through this alone." He said softly, his hands reaching up to cup her face gently. "I'm here for you, always. I'll do whatever I can to make sure you're safe and supported." Jack says, his voice filled with emotion, his thumbs rubbing across her cheeks while he smiles at her fondly. "I know you can handle yourself, but I'll always be here to have your back." He promised.
Kate felt a flutter of warmth and appreciation in her chest at Jack's words. She had never felt more supported than when she was with him. He understood her in a way that no one else did, and she knew that he would always be there for her, no matter what. She smiles and leans into his touch. "I know. And I appreciate it a lot. I love you and I'll always have your back too."
Jack pulls her closer, his arms wrapping around her in a warm embrace. "I love you too, Kate." He whispers, his voice soft and gentle. "You're my world, and I'll always do everything in my power to protect you. No matter what."
Kate's heart flutters while she smiles shyly. "Oh, um, what are you doing back here? Like, I know you "
"I don't know, I just felt like I needed to check on you." Jack admits, his grip on her shoulders loosening as he looks at her with concern. "I had a weird feeling and I just wanted to make sure you were okay."
As they got into his car and drove off, she couldn't help but wonder what the future held in store for them. Carson's words had shaken her to the core, and she knew she had to be careful around him from now on. But with Jack by her side, she knew that she could face whatever challenges awaited her.
The next few weeks pass by in a blur of activity. The tournament was rapidly approaching, and the dojo was bustling with activity. Carson kept trying to get Kate alone to try and persuade her to break up with Jack, and Kate was trying to avoid him, not wanting another confrontation with him. Jack was starting to notice her avoiding Carson, but she just told him that he's just trying to rile her up and she was trying to ignore him. She didn't want him to worry about her or to distract him from the tournament. Besides, she could handle Carson...At least she hoped she could.
****
The day of the tournament finally arrived, and everyone was nervous but excited. Carson seemed especially eager, and Kate couldn't help but feel uneasy. But she pushed her worries aside, knowing that she had to focus on the tournament. The dojo was buzzing with anticipation, and as the students took their places, the air was filled with a palpable tension.
"And the action is heating up here at Battle Of The Dojos." The announcer spoke during a match that was currently in progress. Kate grimaced with her friends at the rough landing the opponent had at the end of the fight.
"Dude, look! The cameras are on us!" Jerry said excitedly.
"We're number one!" Jerry and Milton shouted with a grin, raising their foam finger they both had while Kate and Eddie waved and smiled at the camera.
"Did you guys buy one of these foam fingers?" Milton questioned, glancing over at Kate and Eddie.
Eddie shakes his head. "Oh, my mom says it's a waste of money so she helped me make one at home."
Kate glances at him with a small smile. "Really? That's so sweet of her."
"Yeah, no one will ever know the difference." Eddie grins, raising his homemade foam finger and waving it around. "Bobby Wasabi rules!"
Kate couldn't help but grimace along with Jerry and Milton at the homemade foam finger. It was made of carboard, duct tape, and paint. And part of it had fell off while he was waving it around. She sympathetically smiles at him, patting his shoulder to comfort him. "Yeah, I think I'm just gonna go buy one." Eddie decided as he got up with a frown.
"Yo, hurry, bro. We're up next." Jerry called out to him.
"Ladies and gentlemen, representing The Bobby Wasabi Dojo..." The announcer speaks through the speakers. "Carson Hunter!" Rudy and Carson enter the room and wave at everyone while applause filled the room. Kate giggled, amused when her cousin started dancing weirdly. Carson, clearly embarrassed, had grabbed his shoulders and pulled him off to the side. As they pull off to the side near where she sat with Jerry and Milton, Carson had locked eyes with Kate and she froze in her spot, the smile instantly leaving her face. She shifted uncomfortably, shuddering when Carson smirked and winked at her.
"What was that?" Jerry asked her, his eyebrows furrowed in concern.
Kate blinks and tore her eyes away from Carson, turning to Jerry. "What was what?"
"You and Carson." Jerry states. "He just winked at you."
"No, he didn't. You're seeing things." She quickly deflected, turning back to face the arena.
"Kate, come on." Jerry persisted, not willing to drop the topic.
"Jerry, let it go. It's nothing, okay?" Kate said, her tone sharp with annoyance. She didn't want to talk about it, and she was getting frustrated that Jerry wouldn't let the matter drop.
"Alright, alright, sorry." Jerry apologized, raising his hands in surrender.
"Guys, I've looked all over for Jack, but I can't find him." Kim's breathless voice is heard when she approached them and Kate was grateful for a distraction. Eddie had came back then, sitting back down in his seat with a new foam finger. Kate looks at Kim worriedly. "And he hasn't returned any of my calls."
"Me too. He hasn't replied to any texts either." Kate chimes in. "And he usually does. Maybe his phone died?" She suggested, biting her lower lip nervously. She hadn't seen Jack yet and she was concerned about him. So were the rest of her friends.
"I bet he's just embarrassed. I'm sure he'll show up before you know." Milton tried to reassure his friends and smiled.
"Now representing the Black Dragons...Jack Brewer!"
At that announcement, Kate and her friends turn to the entrance of the room with disbelief and shock. "What?!" They all exclaimed, staring at Jack with wide eyes. Jack walked in with Ty, wearing a Black Dragon gi.
Rudy walks onto the mat, looking at Jack with disbelief and hurt. "Jack? What's going on? What are you doing?"
"What does it look like, Rudy? He's competing for the Black Dragons." Ty replies, putting his hands on his hips and smirking at Rudy. "I've been waiting a long time to be able to say this." He exhales, suddenly getting teary eyed. "I'm gonna need a second." He turns, muttering to himself as he tries not to cry. "Keep it together, keep it together." Taking another exhale, he glances back at Rudy. "What I'm trying to-I can't get it out. I'm gonna lose it. But it was really clever, funny, and mean. Now stretch it out, Jack. I'm gonna strut around the mat and check the crowd for honeys."
Kate looks at her boyfriend with hurt, frowning. She couldn't believe he would do this. Especially after when they had been encountered by Ty, who tried to get them both and he had said then he wouldn't. What changed? Why was he doing this? Kate got up, following her friends over to where Jack was.
"I don't believe this. Why would you join the Black Dragons?" Kim demanded.
"I know. It's because that gi really makes your eye pop." Jerry pointed out, earning a look from his friends.
"Your friend Carson is a cheater, and you guys didn't believe me, not even Rudy. Only Kate did. Well, if that's the guy you want in your dojo, I'm out. But I want a fair fight. It's personal. It's between me and Carson." Jack's gaze landed on Kate, hating the sad and hurt look in her eyes. But he needed to do this. After finding out Carson trying to break him and Kate up, and then trying to get Kate to cheat for him, he wasn't going to stand by and let him get away with it.
As the others went to sit back down, Kate remains standing there. "Jack, I don't understand. The other day you told Ty you wouldn't." She pointed out.
"That was before I knew Carson had hurt you." Jack starts, earning a surprised and embarrassed look from her. "That he had been trying to break us up. And that he was trying to manipulate you into cheating for him. I couldn't just stand by and let that happen. I needed to show him that I'm not afraid to fight for what matters to me. And that includes you."
Kate's eyes widens with a mixture of shock and gratitude. She hadn't expected Jack to be so affected by Carson's actions, and his words filled her with a complicated swirl of emotions. "You...You knew?" She asked, her voice trembling slightly.
Jack nods, his expression serious. "I found out from Rudy. He had admitted he thought something was weird with you and Carson. He checked the security cameras and found out Carson had tried to pressure you into cheating for him and that he had hurt you." He steps closer to her, taking her hands in his and squeezing them gently. "I'm sorry you had to go through that alone. I wish you would have told me, or one of our friends. You shouldn't have had to carry that burden on your own."
Kate bites her lower lip, glancing away as her cheeks turned red with shame. "I was embarrassed. And I didn't want you to worry, not when you had a tournament coming up. But I guess that was pointless, considering you still found out."
"Don't be embarrassed." Jack told her gently, lifting a hand and tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear. "It's not your fault, Kate. Carson manipulated you, and he's the only one who should be ashamed. Not you."
Kate nods, feeling some of her embarrassment dissipate as Jack's words sink in. "Thanks, Jack. I'm sorry. I should've told you, or at least someone. It was just a lot."
Jack wraps his arms around her, pulling her close. "I get it. I do. Just remember, you're not alone anymore. You have me, and our friends. And we're here for you, no matter what." He leans his head against hers. "You don't have to deal with everything on your own. You can always come to me. Or anyone else in our group."
Kate rests her head on his shoulder, allowing herself to be comforted by his presence. She had never felt so safe and protected, and she knew that she could always count on Jack to be there for her. "Thank you, Jack. I love you."
"I love you, too." Jack murmurs, tightening his hold on her. "And I promise I'm not joining the Black Dragons. I just need to defeat Carson in this tournament. It's personal, and it needs to be settled."
Kate nods, understanding why he needed to do this. She felt relieved that he hadn't joined the Black Dragons, but she knew this was something that Jack needed to do. For himself. "I trust you, Jack."
Jack pulls away slightly, cupping her cheek with his hand and smiling down at her. "I know you do. And I'm grateful for it. But I know you're worried. You have every right to be. Carson is a sore loser, and he's going to be out for revenge."
"He already is." Kate admits. "Like you said, I know he's cheating. So just...Be careful and don't let him get under your skin. Okay?" She knows it's a futile request, but she can't help but try.
Jack nods, leaning forward and pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. "I'll try." He promised, knowing that he can't give her any guarantees. He's determined to beat Carson and teach him a lesson, but he knows that Carson won't go down without a fight. He has every intention of holding his own in this battle, but he knows that Kate will be worrying about him regardless. She always does.
"Good luck. Not that you need it." She added, smiling at him. She had no doubts that Jack would win, and she wanted him to know that she believed in him. She always had, and she always would. Jack smiled fondly at her and leaned down to kiss her, but before he could it was time for him to get on the mat. He smiled apologetically at her, reluctantly pulling away from her. She smiled back at him, giving him two thumbs up before she moved to sit down.
"First round is hand to hand. It will be followed by the bo staff." The announcer revealed.
"Let's have a good, clean fight, obey my commands." The ref speaks up. "And..." When Jack and Carson bow, he gestures for them to start. "Hajamay!"
Kate watched on the edge of her seat during the fight. The two were equally good except, of course, Carson was a cheater and Jack was not. Though it seemed like Jerry had trouble deciding who to cheer for which made her roll her eyes. If he knew the truth, he would only be cheering for Jack. When Jack flipped Carson over, Carson suddenly called for a time out. But what got Kate's attention was when she noticed him undoing the bandage on his hands he wore to fight. She narrowed her eyes at him. He was planning something.
Kate heads over to Jack, pulling him to the side. "Jack, there's something I need to tell you." She starts, keeping her voice low. She didn't want anyone overhearing, and she knew she had to act quickly. Carson was planning something, and she needed to warn Jack. "Carson's planning something, most likely to cheat and hurt you."
"Don't worry, Rina. I got this." Jack reassures her, putting his helmet back on. "Promise, I'll be fine." He kissed her cheek, turning and walking back over to the mat. Kate walked back to sit down, hoping that he was right. She bit her lower lip nervously, her leg bouncing up and down as she watched the match with bated breath. She stood up, eyes wide with concern when Jack is suddenly knocked on the ground. Carson clearly had something hidden within his bandages on his hands. Kate had noticed it looked like Jack was in pain when Carson would get a hit on him. But then Carson had done an illegal strike on Jack, getting the ref to push him back after Carson kept trying to continue.
"Wasabi Dojo, you are disqualified." The ref told Carson.
"No! I don't want to win like this." Jack speaks up, surprising everyone as he stands. "Let's keep going."
"But we had it." Ty said nervously. "It was a win for the Black Dragons, right?"
"I'm not doing this for the Black Dragons. I'm doing this for me." Jack pulled the top half of his gi that had the Black Dragons logo on it off, tossing it to the ground. Kate smiles proudly, her eyes shining with admiration. While she was still very worried and concerned about Jack getting hurt worse, she believed in Jack that he would win. And she was proud of him for doing the right thing for himself.
Ty was upset though, complaining about a public gi return while looking back at the camera pointed at him worriedly. "On TV? My mother is watching this!" He sobbed as the ref pulled him off the mat.
Kate began chewing on her nails nervously when the match resumed, her heart pounding with worry. Carson was a cheater and a bully, and she knew that he wasn't going to play fair. Jack was determined to beat him, but Kate knew that Carson wouldn't let that happen. She held her breath as the fight continued, her stomach twisting with nerves as she watched them. The match was getting intense, and Carson was clearly cheating. But Jack exposed him when his fist connected with Carson's bandages, revealing to everyone he's a cheater as he's sent flying back onto the mat.
"Yes!" Kate cheers, up on her feet immediately, cheering with her friends. She rushes onto the mat, jumping into Jack's arms and hugging him tightly. "I knew you could do it." She grinned, kissing him.
Jack grins against her lips, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close. "Thank you for believing in me."
Kate grins at him, pulling away slightly. "Always." She replied, kissing him again.
"Okay, okay, enough. We're in public." Ashton teased, interrupting their kiss and causing them to laugh.
"Sorry." Kate apologized, her cheeks turning pink, hiding her blushing face in Jack's shoulder. Jack chuckled, his face a similar shade as he glanced at Ashton.
Rudy kneels by Carson, looking at him with disappointment. "Carson, I don't know what happened to you, but you are no longer welcome in my dojo."
"Rudy, it's not how it looked." Carson quickly said as he stood up.
"Actually, it's exactly how it looked." Kim told him, glaring at her.
"Kate, what are you doing?" Jack asked with confusion and concern when she suddenly pulled away and walked over to Carson.
"There's something I've been wanting to do for awhile now." Kate admitted, her hands clenching into fists as her anger towards him resurfaced. Before Carson can react, Kate punched him in the face, causing him to stumble back and hold his face in pain. Jack grinned, amused and proud, as her friends all gasped and stared at her with surprise.
"Nice right hook." Ashton complimented, impressed.
Kate smiles sheepishly. "Thanks." She turns to Carson with a glare. "That's for hurting me, trying to break me and Jack up, and for cheating. Don't ever mess with me, or my friends, again." She didn't bother giving him a chance to reply as she turned to walk back to Jack and her friends. "I can't believe I just did that." She muttered, flexing her fingers. Her knuckles were sore, but she felt good about herself.
"That was hot, Rina. Proud of you." Jack smirked, pressing a kiss to her cheek and taking her hand, rubbing it soothingly with his thumb. Kate smiled, blushing as she hid her face in his shoulder. She had never been the violent type, but Carson had pushed her over the edge.
She pulls back when she noticed he was holding his side in pain, causing her to frown. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'll be fine. I'm sure I'll have a nice bruise later. Carson packs a pretty hard punch." Jack huckled, though there was a hint of pain in his voice. He glanced at Kate, who was still looking concerned.
"Are you sure? You seemed to take quite a hit," Kate said, her worry evident. She gently places her hand on his side, and Jack flinches slightly. "Sorry." She pulls her hand back immediately, worried that she had hurt him more. "Jack, maybe you should go see a doctor. Make sure nothing is broken."
Jack sighs, knowing that she wasn't going to give this up. "Okay, okay. I'll go. Later." He promised, leaning down to kiss the top of her head.
"Jack, I should have seen it sooner." Kim speaks up, looking at Jack apologetically. "What can I say? I'm sorry."
"We all are." Milton chimes in. "None of us should have doubted you."
"Yeah," Ashton agrees. "We should've known better."
"Remember when I told you true character is revealed in defeat not victory? Well, Carson just revealed his true colors. And so did you. Is there any way we could convince you to come back to the dojo?" Rudy asked.
Jack looks between Rudy and Kate, who had her arm around his waist, smiling at him hopefully. He couldn't resist the adorable look on her face, and he knew that he could never say no to her. He glances at his friends, who were looking at him hopefully as well. "Look, I only have one thing to say to you guys." His friends brace themselves for the worst, but then he smiles and outstretches his free hand to the middle. "Wasabi?"
"Wasabi!" Kate grinned, placing his hand on top of his. He grinned back at her, the two laughing together.
Everyone quickly follows, placing their hands in the middle. "Wasabi!" They exclaimed, raising their arms in the air and cheering.
"Oh! Hey, guys, look. The camera's on us." Rudy points out, grinning. "Follow my lead. Slo-mo style." He pulled his phone out and played some motivational music.
Kate rolls her eyes, sharing a look with Jack and her friends. But they all shrug and follow Rudy's lead, pretending to be in slow motion as they cheered. It was definitely the best way to end the day.
