Chapter 9 - Part 2
Emma left me right in the middle of having my hair highlighted to drive to her house and pick up her dress and shoes. When she got back, she received the same treatent that I did. Hair, nails and make-up except hers didn’t take as long because a lot more had to be done to my hair, which annoyed me because it basically implied that my hair was simply awful.
Emma didn’t let me near any mirrors to prevent me from seeing my new appearance because she wanted it to be a ‘surprise’. She assured me that I looked ‘great’ but she could just be saying that when in reality I look like a clown. I just hope that looking like a clown wouldn’t be the surprise I was getting. But with Emma you can never be too sure.
When we drove back to my house to get ready, the boys were nowhere to be found. Although, we did find a note stuck to the stairs. It read that they wouldn’t be back until five o’clock, which meant that they would be gone for another hour so we proceeded to going upstairs to my room.
“I think we’re done.” Emma announced excitedly, my eyes were closed as she held my hand and led me towards the full length mirror in my room. I could feel her buzzing with excitement next to me. “Are you ready?” she asked.
“Yeah, I guess.” I answered nervously.
“Wait!” she yelled, I flinched in surprise. “This has to be perfect.” And then she delicately brushed a strand of my hair back into place. “There.”
“Can I open my eyes now?”
“Go for it.” I could hear the wide grin that was plastered on her face. My eyes fluttered open and I waited for my eyes to adjust to the harsh light of the room.
“Holy crap! “ I was in shock and Emma squealed and bounced up and down.
“I’m so glad you like it!” she exclaimed. She looked at me smugly in an I-told-you-so way and I rolled my eyes. She eyed me from head to toe, silently nodding to herself as she admired my new look.
“Like it? I love it!” I confessed. I seriously don’t give her enough credit sometimes.
My dark hair was styled in a delicate french braid and my make-up was simple and had a natural look to it but still made my usual dull brown eyes look brighter. The dress that Emma had picked for me hung beautifully from my body while my new high heels matched it perfectly and making my legs look longer. Although, I had no doubt in my mind that they would start killing my feet in no less than an hour of wearing them.
“Want to know what the best part is?” she asked, folding her arms across her chest.
“I don’t really care but I’m sure you’re going to tell me anyway.” I groaned sadly.
Emma rolled her eyes, “Your hair is no longer, wait for it...” she paused. “Dull and lifeless.” She stated teasingly.
I laughed hysterically, “AHAHA! That’s hilarious! I’m dying of laughter.” I retorted sarcastically.
“I know, I’m so funny that I could become a comedian.” She smiled.
“Yeah...No.”
“Get a sense of humour, will you?” She stuck her tongue out at me.
“Are you two done yet or what?” Dylan yelled impatiently from downstairs.
“Just hold on!” Emma shouted back.
Shockingly, we spent about an hour and a half getting ready, or rather Emma did. I’m not sure why we took so long considering that we only had to change into our dresses, put our shoes on and that was about it.
Aaron, Dylan and Jason came back at five o’clock like it said on the note that they left. They were forced to wait because we, I mean Emma wasn’t ready yet. So every five minutes one of them knocked on the door asking if we were ready yet.
“Ready?” I asked her and she nodded. “Let’s go,” I slowly waddled down the stairs desperately trying to keep my balance and not fall flat on my face.
“Avery, hurry up.” Emma demanded from behind me.
“Shhh!” I shushed her, “I’m concentrating.” Then I resumed taking easy, slow steps.
“On what?!”
“Not falling.” I replied simply, keeping my head down and watching my each step.
“Finally! How long does it take t-“ Dylan gaped at me.
“What’s the dummy staring at?” Jason teased and patted Dylan on the shoulder. He followed Dylan’s gaze, “Oh.Wow.” then he gawked at me, too.
“Shush!” I hissed, “You’re ruining my concentration.”
Emma groaned from behind me, “Idiot.” She muttered under her breath.
“What’s going on over here?” Aaron walked in from the kitchen.
“Idiots being idiots,” Emma explained and pushed passed me. I wobbled unsteadily but quickly regained my balance.
“You look great,” Aaron complimented Emma who smiled and mumbled a thank you.
I sighed in relief, “Phew! I made it down the stairs in one piece.”
“You look...wow...great...wow.” Dylan stuttered.
“Y-y-yeah, wow...great, yeah...wow.” Jason stammered still gawking at me.
“What’s wrong with them?” I asked Emma but she only shrugged and headed for the kitchen, her heels clicking after her.
“I think they’re trying to say that you look great, amazing actually.” Aaron explained and I smiled sheepishly.
“Thanks, Aaron.”
“Anytime.” Then he followed Emma into the kitchen.
“So...yeah I think you’re trying to say something nice, so erm...Thank you. You two don’t look hideous yourself.” I joked. To be perfectly honest, they both looked really attractive. Their blue eyes were shining, which I noticed was the one trait that I was able to find that they both shared. Dylan was wearing a red polo shirt and dark jeans and Jason was in a fitted torquoise checkered long-sleeve top and sandy brown khakis.
“We should probably go,” Jason suggested snapping out of his trance.
“Aaron! Let’s go!” Dylan shouted and walked out of the front door.
“Come on,” Jason put his hand on the small of my back and walked me outside. Emma and Aaron were right behind us laughing at another joke that they didn’t bother to share with us.
We all piled into Aaron’s Range Rover, Emma was sat in the front seat next to Aaron while I got stuck in between Dylan and Jason again because having them sat right next to each other would probably be somthing very similar to World War III, except it’s between two people inside a car.
Emma started fidgeting in her seat, “Are we there yet?” she asked impatiently repeatedly while crossing and uncrossing her legs.
Aaron decided that the only thing to keep her from talking is to havemusic blasting through the radio. But this inly resulted to Emma swaying and doing some random spazzy dances in the car while singing at the top of her lungs. It wasn’t that she was a bad singer, it was just that after a while, it gets a bit irritating to the point where you want to tape her mouth shut.
There was an awkward silence at the back, Dylan and Jason didn’t say a word and just looked out the window the whole way to the party. After what seemed like forever, the car slowed down into a halt.
“We’re here.” Aaron announced and Emma jumped out of the car eagerly.
“Where exactly is here?” I asked.
“You’ll see.” He replied.
I didn’t notice that Jason had already gotten out of the car and was holding the door open for me. “Thanks,” I mumbled and slowly stepped out of the vehicle holding Jason’s hand so that I wouldn’t fall over as I heard Dylan slam the door shut.
I was still holding Jason’s hand when Dylan turned to us, “I’ll catch up with you later, Aves.” Something flashed in his eyes but it was gone before I could decipher it.
“Let’s go have some fun,” Jason grinned and escorted me towards the loud music and shouting of hormone and alcohol crazed seniors.
