Chapter 4 : The choreography
It was past eleven at night and Jin still hadn't come home. Jungkook decided to give his hyung a nasty surprise and lay down in his bed. So whether he liked it or not, at such a late hour, he would neither have the strength nor the will to drive him away.
But the wait was so long and the maknae was so tired that he fell asleep before his return. When he woke up the next day he was still alone but the sheets and the pillow next to his indicated someone had slept there that night. Jungkook felt around the spot next to his and realized it was cold: Jin was long gone.
This situation reoccurred for several days during which the young singer did not see the elder. They would sometimes exchange messages in which Jin simply indicated to him that he had not completed the missions given by the company.
On the first day, he scolded him for sleeping in his bed and asked him to go back to his own room to sleep. But for the next few days, he didn't repeat the request, and Jungkook got the feeling he was glad he wasn't alone when he got home in the middle of the night.
The maknae had of course tried to stay awake to greet him but he never succeeded as he was exhausted himself. Like the other members, he had his own activities to do, his commercials to shoot, his songs to work on... He had the unpleasant feeling that the company wanted to keep Jin away from the other members of the group as much as possible.
One morning, when Jungkook woke up and groped beside him as he did every morning but this time, unlike the usual emptiness, his hand met his hyung's sleeping back. He immediately back hugged him in fear of seeing him leave for the day again. Jin was known to be a light sleeper but this gesture didn't wake him up yet. A few minutes later, a soft knock on the door broke the silence of the room and Namjoon entered.
"You're still there Jungkook," he simply remarked without reproaching him. "We have to wake up hyung, today we start working on the group choreography for the MV."
And suddenly, Jungkook understood why Jin was still there. He must have been relieved of his other duties to work on the new choreography with the others.
"Can you give him a few more minutes, please?" Jungkook asked, "Hyung got home late yesterday and he hasn't slept much lately."
Namjoon sadly shook his head:
"Impossible, I've already delayed as much as possible, everyone is already ready, it's almost time to go. Wake him up and get ready as quickly as possible, we are waiting for you."
The leader left the room and Jungkook exhaled a long breath before gently shaking Jin and murmured:
"Hyung?"
At first, the eldest had no reaction and remained immersed in a deep sleep. Even though he was sad to have to force him to wake up when he was exhausted, he had no choice. Then Jungkook tickled his armpits and repeated louder:
"Hyung!"
"Yaaa... JK... why are you making my life so miserable..." he grumbled in his hoarse morning voice, fidgeting lazily to try and escape the tickling attack.
Jungkook giggled and finally stopped.
"Wake up hyung, the others are waiting for us."
"Aah... why?" Jin muttered, still a little confused.
Jin rubbed his still sleepy eyes and answered his own question:
"Ah yes, the choreography... You can go JK and get ready, I'm awake".
"Okay, but don't go back to sleep hyung."
"Mmmm."
Jungkook went back to his room to get ready and when he got to the kitchen for a quick breakfast, he ran into Jin who smiled at him and put two steaming bowls on the table. Jungkook felt his heart tighten: the tiredness could be seen on the face of the elder he hadn't seen for a long time, starting with the stupendous dark circles that stretched out before his eyes.
"Hyung..."
"Ah Jungkook, we are going to run out of time for a full breakfast, that will do the trick for this morning."
"Hyung..." Jungkook repeated, unable to say anything else because it was sad to see Jin in this state, tired but, true to himself, trying to hide it behind a smile.
" What? You missed me?" Jin joked.
And the maknae unwittingly nodded with sincerity.
"Woaaa, what a good boy!" Jin exclaimed lightly before ruffling the younger's barely combed hair. "Come on, let's eat quickly before we are late."
They didn't talk much during this quick breakfast, Jin summing up his busy days of the past week at Jungkook and the other did the same. Once that was done, they joined the others and were soon all in the practice room. Namjoon apologized for being late for the whole group to the the choreographer and the dance teachers and they warmed up.
They were introduced to the collective movements that they should master in a short time and then, one by one, they were introduced to the individual movements of each singer and rapper. However, when Jin's choreography came along, they all saw that something was wrong and at the end of the dance teacher's performance, it was Hoseok, the group's lead dancer, who pointed out:
"Seonseng-nim? Jin's choreography is way too complicated, isn't it? Personally, I am not sure I would be able to master it in such a short time."
"I agree," Jimin said, "I find it very complicated too, it should be simplified."
Jungkook approved too. Despite all the respect he had for his hyung, it had to be recognized that dancing was not his strong point even if he was good at it and he generally took longer than others to master his movements. The teachers were bound to be aware of this when they prepared the choreographies. So why ?
"Boys, the choreography has been approved by your managers like for everyone else, if you want to complain it will be with Hyun and Sejin, not me," the choreographer replied dryly. "Seokjin? You start practicing it now, I don't want to hear you complain or send others to complain for you."
Jin nodded. For him, all the movements were complicated before he learned to master them and he felt the same about today's choreography, so it didn't prove anything. However, hearing Hoseok and Jimin say that his choreography was very complicated was not going to encourage him to be confident in his abilities to succeed in mastering it.
So everyone worked on their own choreography all morning. As expected, Jin was having all the trouble in the world performing the movements shown and the teacher, lacking in patience, ended up being rude to him. Jungkook who was nearby saw that. He couldn't take it anymore and decided to intervene, leaving his own teacher to approach Jin's:
"Seonseng-nim, will you allow me to try?"
Jin, thankful that he could breathe a bit, watched the maknae attempt the movement he had been trying to master for several hours. Jungkook was a very quick learner, he had already memorized most of the movements by watching them. Yet, the first attempt to reproduce them was unsuccessful. The second was almost dramatic. Jungkook lost his balance after too quick a sequence and crashed to the ground on his hip. Jin and also Jimin, who was practicing nearby, ran over to help him sit up and assess the damage.
"I'm fine," Jungkook muttered, vigorously rubbing his right hip, "I'm going to have a bruise the size of my hand, that's all. I'm glad I don't have this movement in my choreography. Hyung, you managed to stay on your own two feet practicing it for two hours, that's impressive."
"Ah, JK, when will you recognize that I have a better balance than you?" Jin winked at him.
"Maybe this is a move that only you in the group can pull off then," Jimin encouraged.
"Yeah, that must be that," Jungkook said, unconvinced. "Still, be careful not to lose your balance. Depending on the position, it can be dangerous."
"I'll be careful, don't worry," Jin replied before going back to work.
At noon, the boys gathered in the center of the room to have lunch brought by the staff. The discussions mainly revolved around the choreographies. Everything was going well with one exception:
"Jin hyung, did you manage to understand how your choreography works?" Yoongi asked.
"Not yet," Jin sighed.
"When I'm done with mine, I'll help you," Hoseok offered gently.
"I'm still going to talk to Hyun and Sejin hyungs about it tonight," Namjoon decided, "if we can make this choreography simpler, it will be better. I don't see why they would refuse if that can allow us to publish the MV on time."
"Ah sorry, we just started the dance practice that I'm already delaying you," Jin apologized with a nervous little laugh.
Jin was naturally optimistic and playful, and he rarely show negative emotions like nervousness. He had no stress about disobeying company orders for example, but most of all he hated harming his members and that was what made him so nervous sometimes.
"It's not your fault hyung," Taehyung reassured him, "if they wanted to raise the level of our choreography all of a sudden, they just had to give that part to Hobi hyung, it's entirely theirs mistake. If they had given it to me, I would have delayed everyone for sure."
"Why assume that Jin hyung will not succeed in time? He's planning to blow us away, right Jin-hyung?" Jimin said.
The young singer displayed such candid confidence and enthusiasm that Jin nodded, strengthened by renewed confidence:
"Obviously, my talent knows no limits! "
