Chapter 1
3rd Person P.O.V
In the town of Salem, on October 31st 1693, a shadowy cloaked figure could be seen flying through the sky, causing the animals outside to go into a state of panic. A boy sleeping in bed was woken up at a sudden noise. He looked at the bed next to his, only to see that it was empty.
"Emily?" The boy, Thackery Binx, questioned, but received no response. He got up and quickly left his house, hearing the faint sound of a woman singing, but he did not pay much attention to this as he continued to look for his sister. He then spotted his friend, and rushed over to him.
"Elijah! Elijah, have you seen my sister?" Thackery asked.
"Nay. But look, they conjure." Elijah answered, pointing toward the distant woods, where pink smoke could be seen rising above the trees from deep within the woods.
"Oh, god. The woods." Thackery said, before the two ran to the edge of the village. There, Thackery spotted Emily following a cloaked woman across the clearing and towards the woods.
"Emily!" Thackery called out, but Emily did not take any notice of him.
"She's done for." Elijah said.
"Not yet! Wake my father! Summon the elders! Go!" Thackery said, and Elijah rushed to comply, while Thackery raced across the field in order to try and catch up with his sister. He ran as fast as he could through the woods, though this resulted in him tripping and falling down a hill. When he looked up, he saw a cottage a distance in front of him, and saw the cloaked woman lead Emily inside. He approached the house and carefully peeked in through the window, seeing three old women crowded round his sister, who was sat calmly in a chair. He did have to duck down when the women turned to look in his direction, and quickly went to find a way to get into the cottage. He used the water wheel at the side to climb up and through an open window, which allowed him to watch from the rafters above. He knew who the three women were: Winifred, Mary and Sarah Sanderson. The entire town of Salem knew of them, and how they were behind the occasional disappearance of a child, but nothing was ever done because the townsfolk lived in fear of the three witches. Thackery watched as the three brewed their potion, with Sarah and Mary playfully bickering until Winifred stopped them, although he was unaware that there was a fourth person in the cottage, as this person was out of sight. It was only when the witches approached Emily with the potion, that Thackery made his move.
"No!" Thackery jumped down from the rafters, the sound of his voice gaining the attention of the three. He evaded Sarah and Mary by staying on the opposite side of the cauldron they were on, before pushing the cauldron and using it to knock them over, and then proceeding to spill the entire potion out. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough as Emily had already drank some of the potion. Thackery made an attempt to rescue his sister, only to be electrocuted by Winifred. Mary was the one who pointed out that Emily's life force was showing. The Sanderson Sisters were quick to consume Emily's life force, making themselves younger once more.
"I'm beautiful! Boys will love me!" Sarah exclaimed happily.
"They would, but they wouldn't get a chance with you, now would they?" Thackery heard a voice that did not belong to any of the three sisters.
"Of course they wouldn't, Rowena." Sarah answered.
"I thought not. Hmm, you look ravishing, my beloved Sarah. I just wish that your eternal youth did not have to cost an innocent child their life every time." Thackery was in disbelief when he saw the speaker, a brunette woman with piercing green eyes, walk over and put her arms around Sarah, who quite happily snuggled into the embrace before giving the brunette a quick kiss. He'd heard the rumours of Sarah Sanderson having a female lover, but he never would've imagined that it was true, much less that the lover in question was Rowena Pendragon, the town healer. Judging from the lack of surprise coming from Winifred and Mary, it had clearly been going on for some time and both were well aware of it. He remembered Rowena from the few times his family had visited her apothecary, as her herbal remedies were the miracle cures of Salem, and had always remembered her to be a warm and caring woman who did her best to help anyone who sought her aid. But his shock was soon replaced by anger over his failure to save his sister.
"You hag! There aren't enough children in the world to make you young and beautiful." Thackery said, his comment aimed at Winifred.
"That was the wrong thing to say." Rowena said. Thackery looked over at her, only to see her looking at him with sadness, pity and what looked like regret, barely registering that the sisters were discussing what to do with him. At least, until Winifred's spellbook floated over to her and opened itself, allowing the sisters to read what was inside.
"His punishment shall not be to die, but to live forever with his guilt." Winifred decided, closing the book.
"As what, Winnie? As what?" Mary and Sarah asked in unison.
"Stand back. Twist the bones and bend the back. Trim him of his baby fat. Give him fur black as black. Just. Like. This." Winifred chanted, with Sarah and Mary chanting in the background. Rowena turned away, unable to watch as Thackery groaned and fell to the ground, his pained screams soon becoming yowls as he was turned into a black cat. Not long after, a loud banging was heard at the door.
"Witches! Daughters of darkness! Open this door!" A man's voice shouted from outside. Sarah's eyes widened in a panic before she grabbed Rowena's hand.
"They must not find you here! You need to go!" Sarah said.
"I know. Be safe, my beloved Sarah." Rowena said, briefly kissing Sarah before using her magic to transport herself out of the house, appearing a safe enough distance away to ensure she wouldn't be seen. She quickly walked back towards the cottage, only to be horrified at the sight of the three sisters all standing on barrels with nooses around their necks. Rowena could only watch from behind a tree at what was going on.
"Winifred Sanderson, I will ask thee one final time. What hast thou done with my son, Thackery?" A man asked.
"Well, I don't know. Cat's got my tongue." Winifred answered, causing all three sisters to laugh.
"Sarah Sanderson, it is rumoured thou hast taken a female lover. Reveal the identity of thy lover." Another man, this one holding a large wooden cross, said. Sarah shook her head defiantly, as she knew that if she revealed Rowena's identity, then Rowena would be killed right alongside her and her sisters. Well, almost, except for the fact Rowena was immortal and could not die due to one of her spells backfiring back in 1670. The sisters tried singing in an attempt to bewitch the crowd. Elijah, who had been holding the book, threw the book to the ground in order to cover his ears. The book immediately opened to reveal one of the spells within.
"Fools, all of you! My ungodly book speaks to you. On All Hallow's Eve when the moon is round, a virgin will summon us from under the ground! We will be back! And the lives of all the children shall be mine!" Winifred declared, before the three witches began laughing, much to the horror of the townsfolk. Rowena knew what would happen next.
'My beloved Sarah, I promise you that I will wait for your return. No matter how long it takes, I shall await your return and my love for you shall never die. I love you, Sarah Sanderson.' Sarah heard Rowena's voice in her head. She glanced over and saw Rowena standing just behind one of the trees. Then, the barrels were knocked out from under the sisters, causing the nooses to tighten, ending their lives. Rowena turned away and silently fell to her knees, tears flowing down her face. She barely noticed when all the townsfolk had left, leaving her alone. But once they had gone, Rowena used her magic to take the bodies of the Sanderson Sisters down and to give them a proper burial, as leaving them there was not an option for her. Once that was done, Rowena remained knelt in front of the graves, until the feeling of something brushing against her made her jump. She looked down and saw that it was Thackery.
"I'm sorry, Thackery. You were only trying to save Emily. You didn't deserve this fate. Even if I had tried to stop them, it wouldn't have worked." Rowena said.
"You loved Sarah. It was only natural that you couldn't bring yourself to go against them. Not to mention, they did outnumber you." Thackery spoke, which surprised Rowena, but then remembered that Winifred hadn't exactly specified in her curse whether or not Thackery would still be able to speak.
"I suppose you're right. Although my next concern is staying safe. Sarah might have taken the secret of our love to the grave with her, but I fear the Salem townsfolk will eventually find out and come after me, except I am immortal and can't die." Rowena said.
"If I may ask, how did you end up falling in love with Sarah?" Thackery asked.
"I've known the Sanderson Sisters since I was a little girl. They took me in after my parents died when I was fourteen. My mother used to be the town healer, though she didn't possess magic, so I decided to follow in her footsteps. When I was sixteen, I discovered I had magic, and that I was what's known as a white witch. Sarah and I began dating when we were 22. Then, in 1670, one of my spells backfired and caused me to become immortal. That's one of the main reasons Winifred and her sisters began using the Life Potion to stay young forever, or at least until I could find a way to reverse my immortality and live out the rest of my mortal life. In fact, I'm actually good friends with your parents. They are the only ones who knew the truth about me and Sarah, but they've kept my secret for me, which I am grateful for." Rowena explained.
"So, what will you do now?" Thackery asked.
"Well, I will have to tell your parents what happened, although I'm going to tweak a few details to say I tried to save Emily, because if they knew I was there and did nothing, it would not end well. And I'll have to tell them about your new form. After that, I'm leaving Salem. I cannot remain in the place where Sarah was taken from me. I will work out the details when I talk to your parents." Rowena answered.
"That's going to be an interesting conversation, although I will not be able to talk to them. The thought is witches creates enough fear. A talking black cat would only add to it." Thackery said. He allowed Rowena to pick him up and carry him back to the town. He knew things were most likely going to be difficult over the next few days, especially given the fact he was now apparently immortal, although one comforting fact was that Rowena would hopefully be a constant companion for him until his curse could be broken.
