Chapter 12
It was luck that I didn't have to work on my project with Kaito right away, giving me time to process what just happened. Somehow, we'd have to do research about the one hero that made me loathe heroes so much. That wasn't going to be easy. Out of all the heroes that were famous in America, Justice-Core was one of the few that had information hidden from the public.
No one knew who he worked with, or if he was even a part of a group. No one knew what his Quirk was. No one really knew of his outside hero life. There was a reason for that. If people knew that he left his family, people with a similar Quirk would feel disgusted or defeated. Seeing that he died the way that he did, well, that was just the icing on the cake.
I knew finding information about Justice-Core would've been impossible, and I wasn't wrong. Instead of going to lunch like I should've, I snuck into the library, hoping to get some research in. There was no way I was going to tell my classmates I was his daughter. I'd be asked too many questions on what happened to him, becoming the center of attention.
There was nothing worse than being put in the spotlight.
To my surprise, I wasn't the only one in the library during lunch hour. Michi sat behind a computer that was shoved against the wall on the first floor. Her curly black hair was pulled back into two pigtails while her fingers tapped away on the keyboard. While U.A. had a decent collection of books—with two floors full of them—there were also computers. These computers let people research topics at lightning speed.
While that might have seemed like a good idea, I knew the internet wasn't going to help me with research on Justice-Core.
Taking a deep breath, I climbed up the spiral staircase, knowing that on the second floor, there was a section on American heroes. I took a deep breath as I walked over, hoping to find something there. Before I could even reach the back shelves, I stopped, seeing the one person I didn't expect to see in the library.
Raiden Yamamoto.
His back was facing me as he opened a book and started flipping through it. My hands started to shake once I realized that we were alone. The last time we had actually spoken to each other was during the first exam. We might have sat next to the same group of people during lunch, but his glare was enough for me to keep quiet.
He didn't have to say a word for me to know he was still angry with what happened.
I turned around and started to sneak into a different part of the American section, hoping the boy wouldn't catch me. The last thing I needed was to run into him and—
"Smith."
My body froze before I looked over my shoulder, seeing Raiden Yamamoto standing behind there. His eyes were no longer staring at his book. Instead, he was looking at me, keeping that firm glare.
Without having to say a word, I knew what he was thinking. There was no one around. He could get payback for what I did. I mean, it wasn't like he suffered from my actions. No one was able to move up or down ranks because Mr. Elastic only used that as a motivator. From what I had seen, Raiden Yamamoto was still doing great in his classes.
Wait, it was Yamamoto. He made it very clear he didn't want me calling him Raiden or Raiden Yamamoto.
"D-d-don't worry about me," I told him as I scratched the back of my head, pointing my right hand towards the direction I was walking towards. "I was, um, I was just...I was going to do some research. I'm sorry for b-bothering you."
Yamamoto frowned. "Really? Research? You know these two shelves are the only ones with books that can help you with it, right?"
My lips pressed together as I slowly turned around, so I'd be facing him. "Is that so? Funny. I, uh, I didn't notice. Well, I'll, uh, I should be, um, getting some lunch. Cya in class?"
I took a step away, hoping Yamamoto would let me go, but again, he stopped me.
"As long as you don't get in my way, you can stay."
My eyes widened. Was he really serious about that? I looked back at him, noticing Yamamoto tuck the book he was reading under his arm before he started scanning more books on the shelf.
As long as I don't bother him, I should be fine. Sure. Nothing could go wrong with that. Just ignore that he was right there. Don't create small talk, and everything was going to be fine. Just fine.
Let's start by checking out the bookshelf he's not looking at, I thought to myself. It was the best way of not bothering him. All I had to do was act like he wasn't there, right?
Unless he was going to kill me when I wasn't looking. I turned my head to look over my shoulder to find him standing there with his back facing me as he was scanning books. He definitely didn't look like he was going to kill me, but I also remember the day I met him. At first, Yamamoto was nice, but the moment our exam began, he quickly turned into someone who wouldn't think twice of tearing a person apart.
No. I just need to relax, I thought to myself. As long as I left him alone, I'd be fine, right? Right.
I turned back to look at the books on the shelves. Or, at least magazines that were there. The good thing about being born in America and living there for a good chunk of time was that I could read the titles to the magazines. It also helped knowing that Mom and Peter pretty much only talked in English, so most of my conversations at home were in English, not in Japanese. We had a lot of books and things that were written in English too, so seeing that these magazines were in English wasn't a big deal for me.
One by one, I pulled them out, trying to find something about Justice-Core. As luck would have it, there was nothing. Every article there was seemed to have nothing about him. It didn't make any sense.
Maybe there was something about him in a history text book or something. There was no way there could be nothing about him. If that was the case, then it was unfair for us to do a research project on him. Somewhere in this library, there had to be something about him. Right?
"Justice-Core, right?"
I jumped as I turned around and flung my arms into a protective position in front of my face. Yamamoto was standing right behind me, holding a book in his right hand. In his left arm, he held a couple of other books.
Seeing me react that way, Yamamoto raised an eyebrow. I slowly lowered my arms and slid my hands into the pocket in my blazer.
"Y-yeah," I said. "You're not going to, uh, hurt me, are you?"
Yamamoto rolled his eyes. "Only on the training grounds, Smith. We'd get in trouble if we were found using our Quirks outside the training grounds. Now, are you researching Justice-Core or not?"
I nodded my head.
"This has something in it that could help. Nothing in it about Weather Girl, so it's useless for my project," Yamamoto claimed.
As carefully as I could, I took the book from him and looked down at the title. The Forgotten Heroes. Of all the books to have something about Justice-Core, I wasn't surprised it would be this one.
"Thanks," I told Yamamoto as I looked up at him. "Look, about the first exam—"
"You did what you thought was best in the situation you were in," Yamamoto cut off. "Yeah, I get it. Learn from it next time so that if we're partnered up, you're not dragging me down, okay?"
His words took me by surprise that all I could do was stand there. Yamamoto didn't seem to care as he turned around and walked away.
Did Yamamoto just help me with something? I opened my mouth to try to say something, but nothing came out. Nothing could come out. All I could do was stand there, dumbfounded by what was going on.
Just days ago, Yamamoto was on the verge of tearing me to shreds. Now, he seemed nice? Something wasn't right. I mean, this guy was never nice. Even to Kaito, who considered him a friend, Yamamoto always seemed rude.
Maybe this was just his warning to stay away. If so, I was going to be extra careful to stay out of Yamamoto's way. By doing that, there was no way I could drag him down.
I looked back down at the book. The Forgotten Heroes. Of course my so-called father would be one of them. Way to go. You know, most kids who have a heroic parent would be proud and tell all their friends about it, but when I had a father who pretty much wanted to be forgotten the day he passed away.
My fingers flipped through the pages until I came across the chapter titled "The Unknown." It didn't surprise me that I saw Justice-Core's old suit. It was a form fitting black suit with a silver stitching around the shoulders like shoulder pads and two lines down the sides. On the sides, the dark material turned into a galactic looking material, reaching from the armpit down into the dark blue boots he would've worn. The entire outfit was finished with a dark blue cape that went short towards the left arm but long on the right side.
Like all pictures, there was no picture of his face. The only thing there was, was the outfit he would've worn. How was it a man like him, one who people claim he was a great man, practically disappeared out of existence?
Even the bio in the book was short.
One of the greatest hero mysteries would be Justice-Core, also known as Kannon Smith. This American hero was known to save hundreds of people, who have all testified that he was a great man. He wasn't a stranger to helping old ladies cross the street, or run into a bank robbery, where the robber would be caught minutes after he would walk in.
During Justice-Core's downtime, he would donate time to read to children in the orphanage, help out in the food kitchen, and even started a charity for the elderly. He seemed to never have a second to himself, and according to those who knew him best, claim that it was exhausting for him.
Justice-Core is remembered by his wife and daughter who remain unknown to the public eye. He died at the young age of 24. The man died as a hero as he ran into a burning building, trying to get people out to safety.
I shut the book, not wanting to read on. It was all nonsense. Like everything there was about him, they painted him like a saint. At least this book somehow mentioned he had a wife and kid, but it never mentioned that he left them to do what he loved. It was obvious. The reason why he did all those deeds wasn't because he was a good samaritan. No! Justice-Core only did those things because he wanted attention.
That was all heroes wanted. They wanted to be the next big thing. Jokes on him, that man was never remembered. All those things he did were gone in a flash.
"Everything okay?"
I looked up, seeing Kaito standing there. My eyes widened as I looked at him, seeing a dorayaki treat in his hand.
"Yeah, fine," I answered before I handed him the book. "For our research."
Kaito raised an eyebrow as he took the book out of my hands. "Really? But we just got the assignment today. We've got a week to work on it. Hell, we even get to go to the Musutafu library tomorrow to look for better information on it."
"I know," I said. "But, uh, it's not too late—I mean, it's never too early to start researching."
"Hey, I'm not complaining, but we should do this together, you know? Maybe tonight you can come over to my house and we can start doing some research," Kaito offered.
My eyes widened as I quickly shook my head. "I-I-I can't. I have to pick up Ollie from school and make sure he's doing okay on his homework, not to mention get him home safely and make sure that he's okay. Then there's also making sure that he's getting something for dinner. I—I just can't. Sorry."
The orange haired boy chuckled. "Okay, no worries. It was just a suggestion. But, if you're ever free sometime and want to hang ou—"
A ringing noise started to blare out nowhere. My eyes widened as I looked away from Kaito, trying to figure what was going on. While the noise was similar to a fire alarm, the sprinklers weren't going off. There were only flashing lights going off on the walls. The longer the noise went off, the quicker and louder the sound would be.
We had to memorize what each alarm meant during our second day of school. Some were the standard fire and tornado drills, though if those would actually happen, it wasn't going to be a big deal. We all knew how to handle those well. There was only one type of alarm that could go off that would set a panic. Hearing these alarms made me realize what was going on.
I glanced over at Kaito, wrapping my arms around my stomach. Seeing the expression on his face, I knew what was going on here.
A villain had made their way into U.A.
Author's Note:
Dun Dun Dun!!!
Yeah, just realized that this is the first time in a while that a villain has showed up, but guess we had to get through some "normal" school stuff first. Question is, how will the first class of U.A. react to having villains enter the school?
That's not this week's question though. Seeing as this arc pretty much takes place in a library, I want to know, what is your favorite published book?
Yes, update is up earlier because I have a busy weekend ahead of me. In addition to that, next weekend there won't be an update, but be on the lookout that update early on in the week. The rest of this arc should be updated once a week. That's the game plan. Hope you all are doing well. Remember: stay healthy, stay safe, and take care!
