Chapter 2 Meeting Alastor
Sorry this has taken so long. Life has been crazy busy lately and haven't had much time to write. Things are calming down for a bit I will try to get more chapters up before things get busy again. Thanks for being so patient and here is chapter 2. Enjoy.
***Melody's POV***
As soon as I wake up, I feel quite a few things different than what I expected to. First was waking up at all. Sure, the hunters that finally caught me said they were going to sell me, but before passing out I heard a muffled voice I hadn't heard before. I guess I was prepared for the worst outcome.
Next, I wasn't expecting to wake up to the feeling of fresh clothes. I was being hunted down from the moment I arrived here, so fresh clothes wasn't really a luxury I couldn't afford. It's a little sad to consider fresh clothes a luxury, but other things were more important. I know not changing clothes is gross, but it was taking everything I had to avoid the demons hunting me. I also had to keep myself fed and hydrated as best as I could.
Most surprising of all I didn't expect to wake to the feeling of warmth and comfort. I expected to wake up on a cold and hard cell floor. Instead, I am laying on something that I am guessing is a bed with soft and warm comforters covering me.
'What is going on here?'
I open my eyes and see the top of a canopy bed. The curtains of the tied canopy curtain were black. The wood of the bed was a very dark brown color. The blanket and comforter that covered me are a deep red color. Looking at the bed it would appear to be at least a queen size.
'What happened while I was out?'
Looking around at the rest of the room I noticed it's quite spacious. There was enough room to fit several bookshelves, a desk, a couple dressers, and a wardrobe. They were also all the same dark brown wood color as the bed frame.
I try to sit up but fall back down. I clearly don't have much strength right now. I take a deep breath and try again. I do manage to sit up this time. A wave of fatigue hits me after I do so. This is when I can get a good look at the clothes I have been dressed in.
I look down to see I am dressed in pajamas. They are a simple button up pajama top and pants. They are a darker shade of pink and feel like it's a very soft material. Like silk or velvet. Peeking down the pajama top I notice whoever changed me didn't mess with my under wear.
A second later I heard the doorknob begin to turn. I tense up out of instinct as I remember some key facts. I don't know this person. Nor do I know what they want.
I try to relax as while this person may be a stranger to me, I don't exactly have the strength to fight back right now. If I don't have my strength to rely on, then it's best to rely on my wit. If I panic or be tense I won't be thinking as clearly. If I have a clear head, I might be able to figure a way out of this safely.
As they enter the room the first thing I notice is he is very red. Red hair with black ends. Red eyes. A red suit. Well except the pants of the suit are black, but still so much red. Don't get me wrong nothing is wrong with the color. He is just wearing so much of it. Good Lord.
Upon entering the room, he notices I am awake and sitting up. His smile widens and I can see a razor-sharp golden smile. A smile that looks like it could easily tear me apart. He walks over to my side of the bed and greets me with that big smile.
"Hello darling. Good to see you're awake."
This is the first time I have ever heard someone with a radio filter on their voice.
"Yes...um...I don't mean to be rude, but where am I and who are you?" I say trying my best not to offend him.
"Ah yes. Well, you are in my home. I brought you here after taking care of those hunters. That being said I do have to ask why they were after you?"
I look down for a second because I don't know. When I thought about it for a second, I really didn't see a reason to lie about that. Besides I don't know how much he knows about them and could probably easily tell I'm lying.
"I don't know. They been chasing me since I got here a month ago."
Suddenly I hear what sounds like a record scratching.
"A...month...ago? You arrive in Hell a month ago?" He asks with a very confused smile.
"Yes. Why?"
"Well, that means you are still very new down here. Not only that, but you have been put at a disadvantage."
His smile has shifted from confusion to mild annoyance. Not sure if it's directed at me or not. The fact he also has a thoughtful look in his eyes makes me think not, but I can't be sure about that.
"Disadvantage?"
As I ask that his attention focuses back on me. Before he seemed to stare off into space, but he is now looking at me. That look of annoyance is still there. Somehow, I still doubt it's not directed at me.
"Yes. You see, most demons are at least given a chance of getting some type of afterlife together. Being on the run from the start hinders you in many ways. For one thing you are very malnourished and dehydrated. That means you are weakened not only physically. Without a clear mind you can make more obvious mistakes. Which puts you in harms way.
I must say though, surviving a month on the run is no easy task. You are stronger and more resourceful than most. Anyways there are more ways being on the run can be a disadvantage or hinder you, but that is all I am going to explain for now. I don't wish to overwhelm you with so information."
After he says that a new curiosity enters my brain and I ask it before I could stop myself.
"Why help me? What's in it for you?"
Immediately I realized how rude that might sound. So, I explained what I meant right away.
"This is Hell. Kindness and generosity isn't exactly free down here. So, while I do appreciate it, I can't help but wonder what it is you want for saving and helping me."
He doesn't seem annoyed or mad about my questions. If anything, he seems amused by my questions. Almost as if he expected those questions.
"You don't need to worry about that right now darling. For the time being I want you to focus on getting better. If you're still worried about it know that I won't be asking for anything explicit or immoral. So you can take comfort in that. Besides the information you have already given me has provided valuable insights I can use."
A part of me relaxed at his words, but a part of me got curious. Curious about the information being helpful already. I haven't given him much information to work with.
Before I could ask a wave of fatigue hit me and made me just want to go back to sleep. I couldn't help it as a yawn slipped through my lips. As much as I want to ask more questions, I don't think I have the energy to. I hear him chuckle before speaking to me.
"Oh dear. It would appear the exhaustion is making you tired again. I suggest you eat your food and drink your water before going back to sleep."
He walks toward the door and I for a second I'm confused.
'Food? Water? I didn't see him come in with any of that.'
Suddenly I move my gaze to the nightstand and see a bowl of stew and a big glass of water.
'Where did those come from?'
"I do have quite a few things to do this afternoon and won't be here for a while. I will leave my shadow with you while I am gone so feel free to ask him for anything you need. I'll see you later this evening when I bring you dinner. Farewell for now darling."
He says that as he walks out. Before he leaves his shadow seems to come to life and moves to the far wall on the other side of the room. Normally I would question what a shadow could do, but my tired brain just wanted me to go back to sleep.
Unfortunately, my body had other ideas. Not long after he left, I had to use the bathroom. I had Alastor's shadow help me to and from the bathroom.
I was still pretty tired when I made it back to bed, but I should eat before falling back to sleep. Soon enough I was done with both the food and water. Despite having so many questions I went back to sleep.
