Chapter 4 - Scent
I stared at the little girl who hid behind Autumn holding her hand. I looked at Nick with a confused face and he had a smile on his. I looked over at Jordan and Nile who had the same face as me. I looked back at Autumn.
"This is Jaylee. Nick and I adopted her about a couple of weeks ago." Autumn said.
"And you didn't tell me!" I argued at her.
"No," Nick said. "Autumn wanted it to be a surprise."
I cocked my head at the girl.
"Jaylee this is Kiara." She pointed to me. "And that's Jordan and Nile."
The girl didn't say anything. She just dug her face into her new mom's arm. She's probably scared.
"Congratulations." I said to them.
"What made you two adopt?" Nile asked.
"We passed by the orphanage and we saw her outside on the playground." Nick said. "I guess, we kind of just fell in love with her."
"I have something else to tell you." Autumn said to me.
Something else? Other than getting a girl adopted.
"I'm pregnant."
I heard Nile laugh under his breath and kind of glanced at him. He was covering his mouth trying not to laugh. What was so funny?
"Really?" I asked shocked.
She nodded. "It's almost been a month."
"That's so great." I said excited. "I can't believe you're having a kid."
"Hey Nick," I heard Nile say. "You wanna show us to where the rooms are so they can -." He pointed to us.
Nick knew what Nile meant. "Of course. Follow me." Nick left my side and went upstairs.
"Isn't it great?" Autumn said all excited.
"Yeah, it's wonderful. I'm happy for you."
"I have a beautiful daughter." She patted Jaylee's head. "And I have a baby on the way."
I smiled a half smile. It really is a wonderful thing for her. Knowing you have two wonderful kids to care for. Then a wonderful husband to be there for you and support you throughout it all. That's a true family. I wonder what it's like, to have a normal family.
I was upstairs unpacking throwing stuff on one side of my bed to sort out my shirts from my pants. There was a window with white curtains in front of me. It was across from the bed. The bed sat against the wall head first and the night stand stood on the left side of the bed if you stood at the end. The closet was on the right side of the room toward the corner. There was a desk in the left corner with some drawers down the side. It was just a plain room but this room will either be one of the kid's or just a regular guest room.
I heard a knock and turned around to the door.
"Hey Nile." I said.
"Hey, how's it going in here?" He asked walking in.
"Fine, I guess." I turned back around taking the rest out of my stuff out of the bag.
Nile sat on my bed. "So, what do you think of that girl?" He asked.
"She's cute."
"Cute?"
"Yeah, I think she looks nice."
"I gotta tell you something Kiara."
"What is it?" I stopped moving my stuff and looked at him.
"She's . . . she's not normal." He whispered.
"What do you mean by that?"
"She has a scent."
"A scent?"
"Yes, everyone has a scent. Some are different from others but most are the same. Your scent . . . is the same from hers."
I was waiting for him to say something else. "That's all?"
"Yes."
"That's not a big deal. You just said some people have the same scent."
"Kiara . . . she has the scent of your dad."
"My dad? Well Nick use to work with my dad. It's probably from that."
He shook his head. "It's not. This . . . is different. She has the same scent that you do. Nick has a different scent. She also has the scent . . . of a vampire."
"Jordan's? We've all been around Nick and Autumn it probably just rubbed off of them or something."
"It's not anyone who lives in the mansion . . . It's no one I have met before either. This is a totally different one. It's like somewhat of your dad but . . . someone else. Even when I met your dad he has never had a scent like that."
"Nile, that could be anyone out in the world. Maybe it's not a vampire. Maybe you're over thinking it and it turns out it really is one of ours scents."
"He's telling you the truth." Someone else said.
I turned around and looked at the door. Jordan stood there in the doorway with his arms crossed in front of his chest.
"It's just as Nile says. It's a different scent."
"You don't think she's a vampire, do you?"
He shook his head. "Nothing serious like that. She still has that human smell."
"Maybe it was someone she use to live with. Or someone who she came across. It's no big deal you guys."
Nile and Jordan exchanged a look and stared back at me.
"Maybe your right." Nile said kind of sarcastic and got off my bed.
"Yeah, maybe it's nothing at all." Jordan said.
"Yeah I get it, okay. You guys are being sarcastic to me."
"No, no. We were wrong." Nile said smirking.
"Go unpack or do something." I said trying to make them leave.
"Already done." They both said.
Of course they're done. Because they move at the speed of lightning!
"Kiara!" I heard Nick yell upstairs.
"Yes?" I yelled back.
"Wanna do me a favor?"
"What is it?"
I learned that from Gracie. Asking what the favor is before you take it.
"Pick up a movie for me at the store!"
"Why can't you get it!?" I argued back.
"Please!"
I sighed and looked at the boys still standing in my room.
"I'll go with you." Jordan said.
"I'm too tired." Nile said.
I rolled my eyes at Nile.
"Yeah I'll get it!" I yelled.
"Okay, come down here so I can give you the money."
I went downstairs and Jordan followed behind me.
"Here" Nick gave me some money.
"What's this movie called?" I asked putting the money in my pocket.
"Last Gift. It's a cartoon." He pointed out. "I know it's probably childish but we have Jaylee here and she said she wanted it."
Man, I wish if I wanted something my father would go buy me it.
"If you want you can buy a movie and watch it upstairs. You should have enough for another movie."
"Okay. So . . . where am I buying this movie?"
"Walmart. It's not too hard to find here."
"It's not too hard to find? You live in Atlanta."
"I know this place well." Jordan said. "I'll help her find it."
"I like this guy." Nick said pointing to him then walked away.
I felt kind of confused why Nick said that but I rubbed it off and went outside with Jordan.
"I'll drive." I said.
"You might want to."
"Yeah, after your little incident I don't think I want you to drive."
I got in the driver seat and Jordan got in the passenger seat.
It took Jordan and me forever to find Walmart but we actually found it. The harder part is getting back. It was packed out in Walmart. It was after school ended plus it was summer. That means it will be busy. Jordan and I went in the electronics department to look for 'Last Gift' for Nick. I looked for the movie starting with the first shelf. I ignored everyone who was around me and stayed close to Jordan. He was just looking around at the movies.
"What's up with this?" Jordan asked as he grabbed a DVD off the shelf. "The Vampire Turns." He said and showed me the case.
It had a vampire with sharp teeth and fake blood on it. He had blood red eyes an evil look on his face.
"Come on. Do I really look that scary?" He said smiling while putting the case up next to his face.
I laughed. "No Jordan, you don't look like a demonic vampire."
He smiled at me and put the DVD back.
"Found it." I said picking up the DVD Nick wanted.
I handed it over to Jordan to carry.
"Thanks." He said sarcastic.
"You're welcome."
I went to go walk away but I was pulled back to him.
"What?" I asked.
He smiled and kissed my forehead. "Nothing." He said and started walking away.
I stood in awe. I was completely shocked he did that. I rubbed my forehead. What came over him? I smiled and blushed to myself and then followed Jordan.
We came back to the house. We had the movie for Nick and we also picked out a movie for ourselves. I've never really heard of it but it sounded interesting. Nick thanked us for getting the movie and I went back upstairs putting everything away. I just relaxed and read more of my book.
Later at night I cooked some popcorn in the kitchen because Jordan, Nile, and I were going to watch that movie upstairs. Nick, Autumn, and Jaylee were already watching that other movie. 'Last Gift.' I think its cute how they all sit down as a family and watch a movie together.
I heard the popcorn stop popping and took it out. I dumped it out in the white bowl that sat next to the microwave. I feel weird because I'm just coming in and helping myself. But Nick is the closest thing to family so I guess this is kind of my house. They're kitchen is actually the same size of Nick's. Kind of strange. . .
I took the bowl of popcorn and went upstairs. I was already in my pajamas so I didn't have to change after the movie was done. We were watching the movie in Nick's room because they didn't have another TV anywhere else. Their door was the third on the right. When I went in Jordan sat on the floor leaning against the bed and Nile was lying on his stomach on the bed. The movie was on the main menu and they were waiting for me. I sat down next to Jordan.
As soon as Nile took the remote and pressed play someone rang the door bell. I looked at the clock. It was nine. Who would be at the door at this time?
"Hey pause it. I wanna know who it is." I said to Nile.
He paused the film before even started.
"Hello. May I help you?" Nick asked downstairs.
"Yes, do you own that vehicle sir?" Someone asked with a deep voice.
"No, that would be my friend's." He answered.
"May I see him?
I looked over at Nile. Nile was wondering the same thing I was. It was his car. But who wanted him and what for?
Nile got up and went downstairs. Jordan and I followed wondering what it was about. We met Nick half way down the stairs.
"Nile, someone wants to speak to you." Nick said.
We went all the way downstairs and stood by the stairwell listening.
"Is there a problem?" Nile asked the officer.
"Yes, we believe that you ruined private property by driving through the woods."
Nile looked at Jordan. Jordan had a fake smile probably saying 'whoops.'
"Uh, yes that would be me." Nile admitted.
The man handed him a ticket. Nile didn't dare to look but he did anyway.
"Five thousand dollars!" He complained.
"I'm sorry but you have ruined private property and I expect you to pay that."
Nile looked at Jordan angry.
"That's only half of it. I'm letting you off with a little warning."
I bit my lip trying not to laugh because it wasn't even Nile who ruined the property.
"Thank you officer." Nile said sarcastic but he tried not to make it look like he was.
"Goodnight." He said and left the porch.
Nile shut the door.
"You guys ruined private property?" Nick asked.
"No." Nile said. He went over to Jordan and slapped the ticket on his chest. "You're paying for it." He said.
"What did you guys do?" Nick asked waiting for an answer.
I smiled at Nick all innocent. "Nothing." I said.
Nile went upstairs then Jordan followed.
"I'm sorry." Jordan said trying not to laugh himself.
Nick shook his head. "It's none of my business." He said.
I gave a fake laugh and headed upstairs. Right when I went upstairs Nile was laughing with Jordan. They are so nice. It doesn't matter how much trouble they get in. They always find a way to make each other laugh.
