Chapter 16 | The lasagne

Patricia, me and Lizzie sat in Lizzie's room talking. The conversations were mundane and honestly had no real meaning or direction,  we just talked but as we talked I felt small.

Like the conversations me and my friends were having at this moment meant nothing! And somehow the conversation didn't matter, I had bigger problems.

I had to deal with being a participant in a killing game.

I had to deal with the man who kidnapped me still being out there.

On top of that I also had to deal with the mother of my best friend buying a photo that could hold a clue to the location of a button that an save my life.

'Wait' I thought to myself.

My mind slowed.

As the horrible truth dawned on me...could Lizzie's mother be a participant?

She could've been sent the clue I had because the clues appears to all participants, and then Kara (Lizzie's mother) could have worked out the clues like I had.

Kara Kincaid was a participant.

The mother of my best friend was in the end of days killing game.

Finally, I was snapped back to reality by the sound of Lizzie's voice "Alexis are you dead?"

"Don't be stupid she's just being  ignorant today is all" Patricia interrupted to insult me.

"No. No just day dreaming that's all," I replied while forcing a fake smile onto my face to hide the shock aided by this new revelation.

"So what should we do I'm bored" Lizzie's complained toward me and Patricia.

"Well we could umm...any suggestions Lexi!" Patricia replied to Lizzie while annoying me.

"Well that question came out of literally no where!" I retorted. But nonetheless I carried on speaking "we could...no first of all, can we get some food please?" I pleaded.

"Oh sure I think there is some lasagne in the fridge let's cook it!" Lizzie replied excitedly back to my request.

"Sure" I replied adding a slight nod of my head.

"Okay" Patricia also replied.

As we all agreed on a plan the three of us then exited Lizzie's room and walked down the stairs of her massive house, eventually we got downstairs an dwe entered the kitchen.

Lizzie's kitchen was a large room. The walls of the room were all the same plain white walls, the only gaps in the color was the appliances: cupboards lining the wall with a double door fridge and freezer, built into the wall was a large oven and in the centre of the room was a counter top table with four stools stood around it.

Lizzie walked over to the fridge and retrieved a large cooking dish that had inside it an uncooked lasagne waiting to be cooked and then eaten. Lizzie placed the lasagne on the counter table and she removed the plastic cover and she walked over toward the wall built oven and she opened the oven door and placed the lasagne inside the oven and closed the oven's door. She then pushed a few buttons selecting the heat and time for cooking.

Lizzie turned and said "Now it's gonna take at least ten to fifteen minutes to cook properly" she explained.

"Ugh" Patricia complained as she sat down on one of the table stools.

Then I remembered what we came here for, the photo. So in response I quickly made and excuse to leave "oh crap" I exclaimed gathering Patricia's and Lizzie's attention simultaneously.

"What, what's happened?" Lizzie's replied worriedly.

"I think I forgot my phone in your room Lizzie!" I responded.

"Oh I'll go get it then!" Lizzie replied as she turned round to leave.

"NO WAIT!" I shouted (a little too loudly) making Lizzie turn back around to face me and Patricia. I continued in a quieter voice "I'll go get it, I mean you're the only one who can operate the oven. Right?" I responded persuasively.

"Oh right, sure you go up then," Lizzie responded in an understanding tone.

"Alright I'll be right back," I said as I exited the room and walked up the stairs.

When I reached the landing instead of walking into Lizzie's room I crept along the corridor trying to make at less sound as possible.

I passed Johns room, I passed the door to Lizzie's mother and father's room and finally Lizzie's mother's office.

Quietly, I placed my hand of the door of Lizzie's mother's office and pushed it open (since Lizzie's mother was the current mayor of Pine Wood Valley it made sense that she would have and probably need an office in her house).

The inside of Kara Kincaid's office had a large ornate wooden desk with a black leather chair stood behind it facing towards me in the doorway, the walls were almost completely white like the rest of the walls except for painting of a pink rose and toward the side of the room was a huge display cabinet.

First I looked on misuses Kincaid desk, the desk had on it: a silver desk lamp, a pile of papers and an assortment of different writing pens.

Built into the desk was a set of drawers, I decided to open the first draw, inside the first draw was: a stapler, a hole puncher, a box of paper clips and a note pad with a few scribbles.

I picked out the note pad from the drawer and flipped through the pages and what I found shocked me written on one of the pages was the number '1978'.

This number was also known as the first clue!

All remaining participants were given the same clue when a participant had been 'disposed' of.

This practically confirmed it!
Lizzie's mother,
Kara Kincaid.
Was a participant!

Pushing the thought out of my head I continued to look in the draws, I opened up the second draw, and inside the draw was a huge pile of papers in the draw filled with so much information.

Sensing nothing much of interest inside the second draw I ten looked inside the third and final draw, inside the last draw was...the photo!

It was the same photo from the website it had the same faded picture of the towns sign and on the back was the date it was taken! The date read '1976' five years before the town was officially founded.

Pulling my phone out of my pocket I took a few quick pictures of both sides of the photo so Kara Kincaid hopefully wouldn't know I had been there looking through her things.

Then I closed all the draws and left the room but suddenly the front door slammed shut and I could hear a voice shout from downstairs, "HELLO LIZZIE, JOHN I'M HOME!" The voice was Kara Kincaid's!

"HI MOM!" Lizzie from downstairs shouted back clarifying that is was indeed Kara Kincaid who had just entered the house.

Worriedly, I raced across the landing trying to make as less noise as possible.

I darted inside the upstairs bathroom closing the door behind me. The bathroom had white walls and a large bathtub fit for two! The room also contained a walk in shower and a cupboard to the side of a sink with a fancy silver tap. Above the sink was a large mirror with lights, and against the adjacent wall was a toilet.

I sat on the toilet (with the lid down of course) and reached into my pocket returning my phone and retrieving the PTD. To my expected horror it was beeping (presumably because Kara Kincaid was now in the house).

I breathed in and out trying to slow my heart beat to calm myself down. Eventually I mustered up the courage to get up from the toilet, I flushed the toilet out of habit and opened the bathroom door after washing my hands in the sink.

My heart dropped as on the landing standing there was Kara Kincaid.

She had short blonde hair that came down to her shoulder accompanied by piercing green eyes and thin red lips. She wore a grey business skirt that wrapped tight around her legs and a grey women business suit over a white dress shirt.

Kara spoke quickly "well hello Alexis why are you upstairs?" She questioned in a stern tone.

"Umm I just went to the bathroom" I lied to Kara.

"Oh well Alexis, Patricia and Lizzie are waiting for you downstairs and the lasagne is done!" She replied as her lips formed into a unsettling smile.

"Thanks misses Kincaid" I replied as walked back downstairs.

"WAIT!" Kara shouted in a commanding tone yet calm tone, "Alexis make sure Lizzie saves me a piece of lasagne I hate it when people go behind my back" She continued her smile seeming more sinister, Kara then turned and walked into her office closing the door behind her.

I then walked back downstairs and back into the kitchen.

"Hey where have you been Lexi?" Patricia questioned.

"Did you find your phone?" Lizzie asked.

"Um- yes also your mom told me to tell you to save her a piece of lasagne!" I replied trying to change the subject.

But inside I had lied I knew that Lizzie's mother, Kara Kincaid was a participant and I had a feeling that she suspected me of something.
