Gun Baby Gone
"Good morning!", Prudence greeted Katherine as the latter stepped out of the tent. Katherine looked at her watch to see that it was already 9:35.
"Good morning, too. Where are the kids?", she asked, after rubbing her eyes.
"They're in the lake with your brother.", Maxwell replied, pointing to the lake.
Sure enough, there they were, laughing and splashing water at each other. They were having fun, and Katherine wanted in, but she felt too sleepy to do so.
She slowly walked over the trio with her arms crossed, but a smile on her face.
"Looks like someone wants to have fun.", Johnny remarked, winking at the kids, who laughed in response.
"C'mon, Aunt Vanessa! Join us!", Sam called out to her, but Katherine politely declined.
"It's fine, you guys. I'm still a bit sleepy. Plus, the water seems cold.", she answered, and the kids whined.
"No, it isn't! Uncle Victor, tell her to join us!", Sarah spoke, pouting her lip.
Johnny chuckled and turned his gaze to his partner.
"C'mon, now. The kids want you in here.", he said, walking over to her and making hand gestures.
"No, you can't force me.", she retorted, sticking her tongue out. Johnny smirked, and squeezed some water from his shirt.
"Well, if I can't ask you nicely...", he trailed off. Katherine just cocked an eyebrow.
"I'll just carry you in here!", he said, running towards tge youbg lady. The twins were enjoying the sight in front of them.
"No! Jo-Victor!", she said, almost slipping. She ran away and laughed like a little schoolgirl. But of course, Johnny was faster. He picked her up bridal style with a huge grin on his face.
"Ugh, I'm wet now.", she remarked, slight irritation in her voice. Johnny chuckled.
"Oh, I know you are, darling.", he spoke, winking at her.
Katherine's face flushed as she realized how her words came out. "That's not what I-"
She was cut off by being thrown in the cold water.
"AHHHH! IT'S FREEZING IN HERE!", she yelled, and the other three just laughed at her.
"You'll get used to it, Aunt Vanessa.", Sam commented, and they resumed playing with each other, while Katherine shivered underwater.
"Mark my words, Victor. If I get sick, it's all YOUR fault, and I'm gonna get you.", Katherine stated, rolling her eyes at the young man.
"Don't be a big baby. The water's not even THAT cold.", he renarked.
"For you, maybe. Because you're a cold-hearted human being.", she argued.
"Whatever.", he answered, splashing water on her face.
"You little-"
Soon, their argument emerged into a huge water fight. Water was splashing everywhere and they were tackling each other.
Prudence approached them and was about to call them for breakfast, but she got wet with all the water being splashed around.
"My dress!", she yelled, and the four stopped playing.
"It's gonna dry off later. Don't worry!", Johnny remarked. The rest of them nodded. But Prudence wasn't having it.
"You're all so immature! Don't you know this dress costs a fortune?", she yelled, and everyone grew silent.
"Well, why did you wear it to a camping trip then?", Johnny whispered in Katherine's ear, who un return tried to stiffle a laugh.
"Ugh, that's it. Let's go!", she whined, stomping her way to the tent. Maxwell gave the others an apologetic look, before following his wife.
"Looks like someone's showing her true colors.", Katherine commented, and Johnny nodded.
-x-
The whole trip back home was silent and awkward. The only sound audible was the music coming from the car's stereo, and the occasional shuffling.
Johnny glanced at Katherine through the rearview mirror, and then back to Prudence. The latter had a pissed expression on her face. Maxwell, who sat in shotgun, just gazed out the window.
"Listen, Prudence.", Katherine spoke up. "I'm sorry- well, we're sorry about what had happened earlier."
Prudence turned to face her and her expression immediately changed from mad to elated.
"That's alright, dear. At least you apologized.", Prudence replied, now with a smile on her face.
"We're here.", Johnny broke the conversation, stopping in front of their neighbors' house.
"It's been fun, you two. Thanks.", Maxwell said, before stepping out if the vehicle and making his way to the trunk to grab their stuff.
Prudence hugged Katherine and bid goodbye to the children, but completely ignored Johnny. The latter just shrugged and turned his attention back to the steering wheel.
"See you at work, man.", Maxwell said, waving goodbye. Johnny returned the gesture.
He backed up in their own driveway and parked the car. Katherine locked the gate, and the twins helped Johnny unload the car.
Since they reached the house, they dropped their bags on the floor and plopped down on the couch.
"I'm exhausted!", Katherine spoke, and Johnny just gave her a look.
"Wow, YOU'RE exhausted? What about me? I drove for 5 hours!", he retorted, and Katherine just rolled her eyes.
"Big baby."
"Now, I've got to plan how we're gonna sneak in that secret room.", Johnny stated, and Katherine scratched her head.
"How are we gonna do that?", she asked, and Johnny smirked.
"Oh, so you're really coming with me, huh?", he teased, wiggling his eyebrows. The twins gave each other a meaningful look and giggled.
"Yes, I am. For the mission, idiot.", she retorted, and Johnny just laughed.
"Pfft, the mission my ass.", he replied.
"Of course, what else?"
"Nothing.", Johnny spoke, huffing.
"Wait, why don't we eat lunch first before you two start kissing in front of us.", Sam teased, and Sarah agreed.
"Ew!", the two agents said simultaneously, glaring at each other.
It was a funny sight: the two senior agents were acting like children, while the two juniors were more mature.
"Sam and I will cook! Let's go!", Sarah beamed, and the pair ran off to the kitchen, leaving the two adults to unpack their bags.
"Those two are very responsible. I wonder how much more they'll be when they grow up.", Katherine mused while walking up the stairs with their bags in hand.
"Probably like me.", Johnny answered, and she scoffed.
"Gosh, I hope not."
They reached their room and Katherine plopped down on the bed. Johnny nudged her feet.
"Hey, get up. I ain't unpacking these by myself.", he whined.
"Okay, okay, geez. I didn't know it was a crime to lay down for a bit."
She stood up and walked over to her bag; Johnny towards his own, as well. They placed their dirty clothes in the hamper to be washed later.
They also got out their weapons that they hid in the secret compartments of their bags.
Katherine searched for the small gun that she had placed in the outside pocket, but to her dismay, she felt nothing.
"Sh*t.", she cursed under her breath, as she frantically emptied the other compartments of her bag.
"What is it?", Johnny asked, a hint of concern in his voice.
"My gun. It's missing.", she replied, continuously looking for it.
"Did you bring it with you on the trip?", he asked, and received a nod from his partner.
"How about when we came back?", he asked again, and Katherine pulled at her hair.
"I could've sworn I placed it back in my bag. Last night, I took it out and hid it under my pillow, y'know, just in case.", she explained, walking briskly.
Johnny grabbed her arm for her to stop walking and held her shoulders.
"Calm down. We're trained for these types of situations.", he spoke, looking at her straight in the eyes.
"Who slept beside you last night?"
Katherine's expression turned from worried to shocked.
"Who?", Johnny asked again.
"Prudence."
