5: Vikings' Daily Life on Berk

Hiccup walked down the stairs of his and his dad's house as he kept hearing commotions outside. He has a pretty good feeling of what it was as he thought to himself.

'This is Berk. It's twelve days North of hopeless, and a few degrees South of freezing to death. It's located solidly on the meridian of misery. My village. In a word, sturdy. And it's been here for seven generations, but every single building is new. We have fishing, hunting, and a charming view of the sunsets. The only problems are the pests. You see, most places have mice or mosquitos. We have...'

Hiccup made it to the door and opened it only to be greeted by a very pissed off Monstrous Nightmare who saw him and sent a blast of fire towards him but Hiccup was quicker and immediately shut the door closed as the fire hits the door instead and Hiccup pressed himself against as he realized what was causing the commotion outside.

"... dragons." He breathed in shock and surprise but there was an excited glint in his emerald green eyes.

He reopened the door and peeked outside to see that it was total chaos around the village. Yup. A dragon raid. Nothing new there. He leaps out of the house and runs in a certain direction. Now you're probably thinking that a teen his age would probably bump into his tribespeople? Well, you're proven wrong. Due to his scrawny yet healthy build, Hiccup was able to weave through the chaos as vikings poured out of their houses with weapons at the ready as more and more dragons swarmed the village intending to raid the village of their livestock.

While running, Hiccup observed as some were fighting the dragons. He even noticed that a viking was hitting a Gronckle with their hammer only to be tossed back to the ground.

'My name's Hiccup. Great name, I know. But it's not the worst. Parents believe a hideous name will frighten off gnomes and trolls. Like our charming Viking demeanor wouldn't do that.'

Hiccup ducked under a brazier pole that two vikings were carrying but some unlucky vikings hit their head on it and Hiccup stopped to see if they were okay. Some vikings bumped past him and just as he turned around to continue his journey, one of the houses suddenly exploded and sent him to the ground as another viking came crashing down towards but the guy was able to stop himself from crushing Hiccup.

"Arggghhhhh!" The viking yelled in a fierce battle cry but greeted Hiccup cheerfully instantly.

"Mornin'!" Hiccup didn't need to guess what the viking had been doing since it was clear that he had been drinking mead.

The viking rushed to join the fray as Hiccup got back up to his feet and continued his run through the village and past the gigantic heights of his tribes.

'Meet the neighbors. Hoark the Haggard...'

"What are you doing out!?"

'Burnthair the Broad...'

"Get inside!"

'Phlegma the Fierce...'

"Get back inside!"

Hiccup just ignored them. Even though he's being told to get back inside, there's no way he's going to stay inside the house after the Monstrous Nightmare practically scorches the door black.

'Ack.'

He cringed as he passed by a viking rubbing their ear.

'Yep, just Ack.'

Just as he was about to cross the village, he felt a big hand grab him by the hoodie of his vest and yanks him away from the path of the Deadly Nadder who breathed fire in front of the teen.

"Hiccup!" A loud voice boomed as Hiccup yelped in surprise as he was yanked back.

Hiccup has a deadpanned look as he glances at the big burly viking with the big auburn beard as he pointed to Hiccup and looking at the crowd of fighting vikings accusingly.

"What is he doing out again?!" The giant of a viking questioned the crowd before turning to the teen.

"What are you doing out?! Get inside!" He exclaimed as he set Hiccup down, who in turn ran off as the big viking looked to the sky as if searching for something while the flames lit up his scowling face and red beard.

You're probably asking who the big, gigantic viking with the biggest red beard is right?

'That's Stoick the Vast. Chief of the tribe.'

Stoick noticed a Nadder making a getaway with a sheep in its claws.

'They say that when he was a baby he popped a dragon's head clean off of its shoulders. Do I believe it?'

He easily picked up a wooden cart as if it weighed nothing and tossed it towards the dragon who dropped the sheep from the impact as it flew away to shake off the pain.

'Yes, I do.'

After that was taken care of, the chief turned to his men for any info on what dragons were raiding their village.

"What have we got?" He asked as one of the vikings answered.

"Gronckles. Nadders. Zipplebacks. Oh, and Hoark saw a Monstrous Nightmare." The viking informed him just as an explosion from a Gronckle's blast caused the vikings to take cover.

Stoick just stood unfazed by the explosion as one of the embers landed on his fur cape.

"Any Night Furies?" He questioned.

That's right. A few months earlier, a dragon they had never seen or heard of before always attacked them. They don't know what it looks like but all they know is that it gives out its signature sound before an explosion happens. They called it the Night Fury.

"None so far." The viking shook their head and Stoick flicked the ember off his shoulder as if nothing.

"Good." He said with a relieved tone.

"Hoist the torches!"

Hiccup ran past the other vikings as many massive flaming braziers were raised on poles to light up the night sky to reveal dragons of all kinds and colors flying about looking for prey.

Hiccup finally reached his destination as the chimney of the blacksmith which he works at. He entered while removing his vest hoodie as he ran past a big blonde mustache viking with a peg-leg and only having one arm who has a hammer on his other.

"Ah! Nice of you to join the party. I thought you'd been carried off." The blacksmith greeted him jokingly as he hammered a sword back into shape.

Hiccup puts on an apron as he turns his attention to the blacksmith.

"Who me? Nah, come on! I'm way too muscular for their taste." Hiccup joked as he put away the scattered prosthetics back to where they belong.

"They wouldn't know what to do with all this." He said as he strikes a bodybuilder pose.

But due to being scrawny, his muscles were nonexistent but he does have a bit of muscle to him if he can do some lifting on the weapons.

"They need toothpicks, don't they?" The blacksmith joked back as he removed the hammer for another.

Hiccup opened the window of the counter and immediately vikings crowded it and put all of their weapons on the table. The teen gets to work almost instinctively as he transfers the bend and chipped weapons to the forge where he proceeds to reheat the burning coals underneath to start on the repairs of the weapons.

'The meathead with attitude and interchangeable hands is Gobber. I've been his apprentice ever since I was little. Well...littler.'

Meanwhile, at another section of the village, Stoick was with some of his men as he was barking out orders.

"We move to the lower defenses. We'll counter-attack with the catapults." He ordered as armed men run past while flanking others who are carrying the sheep to safety with Stoick on the rear.

While fixing some weapons, Hiccup leaned back to see what was going on as he saw one of the dragons torch one of the houses and immediately set it on fire as he rolled his eyes.

'See? Old village. Lots and lots of new houses.'

"FIRE!" A viking shouted.

"Alright, let's go!" That voice made Hiccup perk up a little bit just to continue his work.

He noticed from the corner of his eyes as the fire brigade team charged through the plaza. He couldn't help but stop what he was doing to watch them as  There were five teens all carrying buckets to put out the fire as they filled it up with water.

'Oh and that's Fishlegs.' A big chubby teen ran off.

'Snotlout.' Hiccup rolled his eyes at the sight of his cousin before watching the twins fight over a single bucket of water as he shook his head.

'The twins, Ruffnut and Tuffnut.' He turned his attention to the last of the teens as she tossed the contents of her bucket to the fire.

'And… Astrid.' A big explosion erupted from behind the blonde beauty as the explosion of fire as the other teens joined her all looking awesome and heroic but Hiccup just rolled his eyes before focusing back on his work.

For the longest time until he turned 13, he had the biggest crush on Astrid in the village and it was one of the reasons why Snotlout is picking on him but when he tried to confess to Astrid his feelings for her, she harshly turned him down and that she bluntly told him that she wants nothing to do with him but he has to admit.

'Their job is so much cooler.'

Hiccup felt himself being picked up again and hoisted back inside by Gobber as he gave the smith a deadpanned look. Did he forget to mention that he hates being picked up like that?!

"Ah, come on. Let me out, please. I need to make my mark." Hiccup pleaded to Gobber as the adult set him down.

"Oh, you've made plenty of marks. All in the wrong places." Gobber pointed out as he poked the teen's chest.

"Please, two minutes. I'll kill a dragon. My life will get infinitely better. I might even get a date." Hiccup reasoned with him pleadingly but Gobber shook his head as he started to list off why he can't join the fight

"You can't lift a hammer. You can't swing an axe." Gobber counted before grabbing a rope that has iron balls to it.

"You can't even throw one of these." He finished just as a viking runs by and snatched it out of Gobber's hand.

The viking hurls it at a Gronckle as the bola binds the dragon's legs and wings and sends it crashing to the ground and Hiccup had to suppress a wince at the growl that the dragon emitted upon impact but good thing he was ready with an answer.

"Okay fine, but..." Hiccup started as he went to the back corner of the stall and stood next to a rather bizarre wheelbarrow-like contraption that he made.

"... this will throw it for me." Hiccup finished as he pats the surface only for it to spring up, unfolding itself instantly and launching a bola.

It narrowly missed Gobber who just leaned to the side as the bola struck an unsuspecting viking straight in the face as he fell down and their companion looked at their fallen comrade in concern  as Gobber sighed and shook his head before he turned to Hiccup with a stern look.

"See, now this right here is what I'm talking about." Gobber chastised him as he walked over as Hiccup tried to explain.

"Mild calibration issue." Hiccup said but Gobber stopped him.

"Hiccup. If you ever want to get out there to fight dragons, you need to stop all..." Gobber told him before he gestured in Hiccup's general direction as the teen looked at him in disbelief. Did he just...?

"... this." Gobber finished as Hiccup looked at himself in disbelief and astonishment.

"But... you just pointed to all of me." Hiccup said as Gobber nodded.

"Yes! That's it! Stop being all of you." Gobber said and Hiccup gave him a deadpanned look.

"Ohhhh..." Hiccup started threateningly.

"Ohhhhh, yes." Gobber mimicked him with a stern look on his face.

"You, sir, are playing a dangerous game. Keeping this much raw… vikingness contained. There will be consequences!" Hiccup said but Gobber was unfazed by him.

"I'll take my chances." Gobber said before getting a sword and tossed it into Hiccup's arms as the lanky teen caught it.

"Sword. Sharpen. Now." He simply said.

"Whatever." He muttered as he begrudgingly took the sword to the grinding wheel.

He noticed that his sleeve slid down off his left hand to reveal the mark he got yesterday. Explaining how he got it to his father was gonna be hard if he finds out and he has to find a glove to hide the glyph. He then lobs the sword down on the grinding stone as it spins as he begins to sharpen the steel as he mind the sparks dancing off the blade.

'One day I'll get out there. Because killing a dragon is everything around here.'

Somewhere in the village, Deadly Nadders landed and are gathering like seagulls around on the roof of a seemingly vacant house.

'A Nadder head is sure to get me at least noticed.'

The Nadders clamber onto the building, tearing the roof and walls apart and causing sheep to pour out and scatter for safety.

Elsewhere by some houses, Gronckles pick drying racks clean of fish  and fly off like loaded pelicans with their prize.

'Gronckles are tough. Taking down one of those would definitely get me a girlfriend.'

In another part of the village, a stealthy, snake-like dragon head peeks over a rooftop and breathes green gas into the open roof of a house as a second head pokes through the door.

'A Zippelback? Exotic, exciting. Two heads, twice the status.' The second emitted sparks from its mouth directly in the gas and lit the gas.

The gas immediately ignited into an explosion as the dragon flew off to reveal that it was a two headed dragon as sheep poured out of the house. The Hideous Zippleback flew past the catapult tower that Stoick was on as the chief climbed to the top.

"They found the sheep!" A viking shouted and Stoick was starting to get frustrated with the raid.

"Concentrate fire over the lower bank!" Stoick ordered as he helped turn the catapult in the direction of where the sheep were.

"Fire!" Boulders were instantly launched at some unsuspecting Nadders as one was hit and landed on the ground just as a huge red dragon flew past to which Stoick noticed.

'And then there's the Monstrous Nightmare. Only the best Vikings go after those. They have this nasty habit of setting themselves on fire.'

The Monstrous Nightmare was nowhere to be found but Stoick wasn't fooled by it before he noticed a flaming glow below the catapult as he walked to the edge. It burst through the wooden platform of the catapult as it was on fire as it glared at the chief with a leer and toothy grin.

"Reload! I'll take care of this." Stoick ordered those with him as he took out his hammer and hit the Nightmare with it who tried to bite him.

It suddenly stopped and seemed to smirk when all of a sudden a loud ballistic sound was overheard by everyone in the village. It grew louder and higher in pitch and every viking knew what it was immediately and the Nightmare flew off quickly as Stoick turned to the sky.

Back at the blacksmith, Hiccup looked up from his work as he recognized the sound immediately.

'But the ultimate prize is the dragon no one has ever seen or heard of before. We call it the-'

The sound grew higher and louder just as a viking shouted.

"Night Fury! Get down!" The vikings quickly took shelter under their shields to cover their eyes.

The catapult Stoick was on is immediately blasted by a ball of blue fire which exploded as if it was hit by an artillery shell.

"JUMP!" Stoick ordered as the catapult tower started to collapse while the chief and his men leap off the collapsing tower for safety.

'This thing never steals food, never shows itself, and...'

Hiccup looked out of the window of the counter as he looked at the sky and he squinted his eyes to see the dragon as it blasted the already collapsing tower again and Hiccup could have sworn he saw something fly by before it disappeared into the night sky.

'...never misses. No one has ever killed a Night Fury. That's why I'm going to be the first.'

Hiccup grew a determined expression. Today was the day he shot down and killed the Night Fury. He didn't notice the mark on his left hand pulsing a little as he walked back to his invention where he saw Gobber switching his prosthetic hammer with an axe.

"Man the fort, Hiccup, they need me out there!" Gobber told him as he started to head out but paused and turned to Hiccup with a threatening glare.

"Stay. Put. There." Gobber told him as Hiccup looked at him but he secretly glanced at his invention and glanced back at Gobber.

"You know what I mean." Gobber said before he charged into the chaos that's in the village hollering a battlecry to aid his fellow vikings and missing the smirk that danced on Hiccup's face.

Did Gobber seriously think he'll stay? No way! Taking off his apron and grabbing his vest-hoodie, he went to his invention and pushed it through the doors of the blacksmith.

Vikings on the other side quickly moved out of the way just as Hiccup made his way out and he weaved through the ongoing mayhem the village was in as fast as his legs could carry as Vikings shouted for him to come back since they needed their weapons to be fixed.

"Hiccup, where are you going!"

"Come back here!"

"I know! Be right back!" Hiccup shouted back over his shoulders as he moved out of the way of another Viking with an intended destination and place in mind.

Somewhere in the village, the Nadders cornered a group of sheep as the little creatures bleated in fear for help. The dragons close in to snatch them when Stoick suddenly appears with a net and throws it upon the surprised Nadders who were a little late to react. Stoick and his men rush in to stop them when a Nadder blasts a hole through the net to escape with its companions but Stoick stops it as he clamps his thick arms around its head and forces its jaws shut.

"Mind yourselves! The devils still have some juice in them." Stoick grunted as he wrestled the Deadly Nadder's head to the ground.

On a secluded cliff, Hiccup finally arrives as he drops the handles of his invention against the ground as he unfolds it and it sprang a pair of bowed arms on each side before dropping a bola inside the chamber. He grabbed the handle to make it move as he aimed it at the dark starry sky. He listened closely for anything while keeping a close and observant eye on the scope with his hands on the trigger. The dragon has to attack this catapult. He just knows it.

"Come on. Give me something to shoot at, give me something to shoot at." Hiccup muttered to himself as he squinted towards the night sky.

He flinched a little when he heard something from the sky as he looked in the direction. He noticed movement in the corner of his eye and he looked over. It was unnoticeable to others but he knows it's there. He noticed that a group of stars were being blocked by something and he knew what it was.

It gave off its signature sound and Hiccup readied himself as he looked at the tower with his arms tense and ready. The Night Fury approached the catapult tower as the noise grew louder and louder before a ball of blue fire dismantled the catapult. Hiccup noticed that unlike normal dragon fire, the fire from the Night Fury was blue even when exploding.

The fire on the catapult illuminated the dragon for a split second and Hiccup didn't waste any time and pulled the trigger that very second. The force sent him flying back with a yelp as the bola soared through the sky. Hiccup quickly got up and heard something hit the bola. He looked up just as something was falling down in the direction of the forest with a roar.

For a moment, Hiccup was shocked into silence. He did it. He really did it!

"Oh I hit it! Yes, I hit it!" Hiccup shouted in victory, unable to contain his excitement.

"Did anybody see that?" He asked but there was no one there.

He noticed a glow on his left hand and noticed that the mark was pulsing and glowing. But before he could ponder on what was happening to it, his victory of shooting the elusive dragon was short-lived when something came up behind him and he didn't need to turn around but he did as the sound of his invention being crushed into splinters was loud and clear and standing on top of what was left of it was a Monstrous Nightmare.

"Except for you." He deadpanned sarcastically as the Nightmare let out a growl but for some reason it was words.

"I'd run if I were you, human." The Nightmare said venomously and Hiccup didn't need to be told twice as he made a run for the hills with the Monstrous Nightmare hot on his heels.

Back to Stoick, he was helping his men hold down the Nadders trap by a net when a familiar holler pierced through the early morning air. He looked up and was alarmed to see Hiccup running through the plaza as the teen was screaming with a Nightmare hot on his heels. He let out a sigh of frustration as this was another of times that he has to save Hiccup from danger. He quickly stands up and runs off but turns back to his men.

"Do NOT let them escape!" He ordered before he turned to reach Hiccup quickly.

"Right!"

In the plaza, Hiccup nearly dodges a blast from the Nightmare as its sticky, Napalm-like fire splashes up onto buildings, setting them ablaze. Hiccup ducks behind the last standing brazier, the only shelter he could find and the Nightmare blasts it, spraying fire all around him which made the teen yelp in fear and surprise as he covered his face. Trying to steady his breathing, Hiccup peers around the smoldering post to see if it was still there but it wasn't until he turned back to find it leering at him, blocking his only escape. It starts to take a deep breath Hiccup is sure that he was toast only for Stoick to suddenly appear and leaps between them, tackling the surprise dragon to the ground. The two tumbled away from Hiccup and they had a stare off to see who would move first. The Monstrous Nightmare tried to blast the chief but it only coughed out a measly amount of fire. Hiccup watched them from behind the brazier and he could still hear instead of usual dragon noises, they were human words.

"Uh oh." The Monstrous Nightmare gulped as it looked at the chief nervously as Stoick smirked.

"You're all out." He told it as he marched towards the dragon.

He gave it a few punches and a kick to the jaw which caused it to retreat and fly off to join its companions. Huffing in victory, Stoick then turns to the brazier already knowing who was hiding behind it.

'Oh, and there's one more thing you need to know...'

The burnt pole of the brazier now reduced to coal crashed down and tipped to the side to reveal a very embarrassed and sheepish Hiccup left standing in front of the chief as he looked at him with a nervous smile as a crowd gathered around. The top part of the brazier topples down and a viking narrowly avoided the flaming torch as it was sent rolling down the hill. Hiccup winced as vikings dodged out of the way as he glanced at the chief meekly.

"Sorry, dad." Hiccup apologized but avoided eye contact from his father's scrutinizing gaze.

Yup, the scrawny teen who shot down the very elusive dragon is no other than the chief's only son and heir.
