creatures ideas part one
hey, so im back i guess, for like a chapter
this got awkward for me fast, wow
so this sorta got requested i guess, i saw this comment in my notifications about whether or not i could do some creature lists for oc's and honestly, it had to be written anyway and next thing you know im writing all this down
i hope its helpful, but then again, i mean i dont really have any authority here
there have been so many overpowered characters and honestly its so unnecessary
as i said in my 'overpowered oc's' chapter:
just because your oc is the most powerful character does not automatically make your story good
so, here you are with some do's and don't as to what type of creatures fit better in these worlds
i will also be dividing this into two lists. One for TVD and TO and another for Legacies since they've been exploring more creatures.
This one is for TVD and TO, since honestly, if you even try to include other creatures, it's weird
- vampires
yeah i know, its in the title for the parent show and yet it's barely use. and when it is, it's merged with another creature.
guys.
there's been such a lack of good vampire fics, and you can't even see how awesome they can be, there's so much to do. it's not always hiding your true self or wanting to be human or falling in love with a human.
First off, you have the choice to pick any era and put them there, like in the Damon fic where he talks about his old love during the 70's, the whole book is set in that time period and it's awesome.
Or you can do a Victorian-style one, maybe something in the 90's, there's a lot to explore in terms of historical fiction.
You can also do darker themes of psychosis, blood addiction, fighting to keep your humanity.
For those writers that are people of color, you can make your OC your race and place them in the 50's or something and write about the injustices that you yourself have faced or your parents faced and then even jump to the present and talk about how it's gotten better, not perfect, nowhere near perfect, but better than what was before.
Or even a young vampire who's barely a year old and is struggling with their nature.
There's so much to explore for your character and plot and even a message you want to send by simply making them a vampire and exploring your character as such.
- werewolves
here we go, the interesting thing about werewolves in this universe is how badly treated they are (i mean not as a bad as the true blood ones but still). (but legit i do think julie plec has some deep hatred against them cuz i mean, the way they turn into wolves? the way they activate their curse, the curse that the wolves from S1 of TO went through? the shit the wolves and hybrids went through in TVD? the lack of wolves in Legacies?)
anyway, i suggest looking into themes from Teen Wolf for the wolves. Teen Wolf takes wolves powers to a whole new level, I mean the line, "Sometimes the shape you take reflects the person you are." is so fucking deep and iconic.
and, "I might be a predator, but that doesn't mean I have to be a killer."
and
"Not all monsters do monstrous things."
Their powers are also just so very interesting, I mean at one point one of them couldn't heal themselves because they felt guilt over a lost pack member and that mental pain couldn't let them physically heal. That's some pretty cool shit.
And they have the ability to take other's pain away. It can be in small doses or big ones, and if it's too much it can kill them.
You've also got the pack mentality that comes with being a werewolf and in a wolf pack; there are themes of family and loyalty, and I think that's a good thing: to draw a line your OC won't cross, because the OC constantly goes back and forth being on the Salvatore's team or the Mikaelson's team, it gets annoying quick with them either playing both sides or not knowing who to choose.
Being a wolf sort of makes the OC mature enough to pick a side and stick to it, and decide to not cross that line. Or even distance themselves from vampires and witches. That makes it a whole other perspective, actively not wanting to be involved in the Salvatore's drama.
And while this isn't the same universe, I say take a look at the awesome book set in the Twilight universe Cold Water by Robyn
they've done such a good job portraying these characters that align themselves with the wolves and don't want anything to do with the vampires, they've actually drawn a line and they respect it.
- witches
i know, i know, im tired of witches too. but i feel like we haven't explored them in a unique way that julie plec hasn't given us.
We know that witches can do multiple spells and hexes, so i wanna focus on witches with specific talents.
For ex, we all joke about Josie being a pyromaniac, but truth be told, she does opt for the fire spells immediately. Back in 1x02 the dragon was originally mistaken for a pyrokinetic witch, and Alyssa Chang even burnt down her childhood home as a kid. And Wendy, a student stuck in the Prison World, has been known to work with fire as well. So, a bunch of these have a tendency to choose fire.
But why stop there? Make witch OC's that have a bigger connection to nature, they can move vines and trees to protect them, they use flowers to send messages, go full on Poison Ivy or Swamp Thing if you want.
Make OC's that practice with water mainly, like with ice or wind and from that they can create powerful storms and hell, even link it to their emotions. Make it rain when they're sad (and yes i stole that from Men in Black 2).
Make it storm when they're frustrated or angry. And maybe under duress, the OC intentionally makes the winds go stronger to get away from the bad guys.
Maybe some witches have a stronger sense clairvoyance. Make one be able to listen to people's thoughts. Make one able to see visions, either of the future, or the truth when people lie, or what really happened in a past situation, etc.
Boom, there ya go, witches in a whole new light. Who said being a witch is all about spells and incantations? I mean, yes, these choices do still have the ability to cast spells, they just happen to have a specific tendency or specialty of powers. Like they find moving nature and vines easier than casting a spell but that doesn't mean they can't do it.
Hell, take inspiration from other witches on TV and movies, I
took the four elements trope, I took ideas from both Charmed series, take some from The Secret Circle, you can even take some from the Witches of East End, and make one witch really talented in making potions or something. That's easier than just making an OC and saying they can control the weather, no, instead make your OC a witch and say they have a specialty in water and wind control, and then build it up to weather in the climax.
It's not that hard to make your character a witch and just say that they have a specialty or stronger power in something else.
See? I just re-evaluated the three main creatures in this universe. Guys, use these ideas, expand upon them. You know that saying 'think outside the box' well I want you guys to think inside the box. That's actually more difficult, and if you can find a way to tell a unique perspective from one of the main three creatures on the shows then you can fucking write and I applaud you.
I'm not saying to always limit yourself, but I am saying that you should set some sort of limit to what you're writing. I mean you don't wanna be like the Baywatch Nights, the show started of with beaches, babes, and Hasselhoff, ended with sci-fi creatures and conspiracies.
Having limits isn't a bad thing, it just tells you to stop here because if you pass that line, your story becomes more difficult to follow or not as satisfying to read.
Following the original storyline of the show and simply expanding it into something believable is so interesting and actually satisfying. Like the Damon book I mentioned, it was satisfying and actually believable because Damon was in New York in the 70's and he didn't have a humanity but that's about all we know. So, the author expanded from that, made it interesting and different and a really good story overall.
if you're interested in reading the books I mentioned:
Damon fic: New York by Keisha
Twilight Jacob Black fic: Cold Water by Robyn
(also has two spin offs:
Sweet Creature, a Leah Clearwater fic and it's w|w
and Dangerous Women, a Paul Lahote fic, and the OC is hilarious)
well, hope this helped, stay tuned for part 2, it'll include other creatures this time
