Chapter 8 A Favor
Faith.
***Faith's POV***
After returning home from the unfortunate hunting incident, we brought the deer I got inside. Alastor helped skin and harvest the deer. Before everything was put away Alastor asked if he could have the organs.
"Why do you want the organs?" I ask out of pure curiosity.
Honestly, I wasn't going to keep them as I don't really like the taste of any of them. So, if he really wants them, he can have them.
He explains how he used to fry up deer organs all the time when he was alive. That he hunted often when he was alive. Especially during the great depression, when food and money were tight.
"There are deer down in Hell and while they taste fine, they just don't taste as good as deer on Earth."
"I don't mind if you want them. I don't like the taste of the organs. So, you can have them if you want."
With that a snap of his fingers I am assuming he teleported the organs back to hell. Don't know what other reason he would snap his fingers like that for. His smile did seem more genuine and happy. I'm glad. We may have our differences, but that doesn't mean I have to want him to be unhappy or miserable.
I have always liked making people happy. Alastor may not be alive anymore, but he still has feelings. Whether he acknowledges all of them or not is up to him though. I am glad that his smiles seem more genuine lately. They used to seem so forced when he first started to hang out around me.
Breaking me out of my thoughts, Alastor offered to teach me some recipes he used to make back when he was alive. The ones without deer organs of course. I smiled as I accepted his offer. It was getting late. So, he would teach me another day.
I was sitting on my ready to go to sleep when my ankle suddenly felt itchy. After scratching it my mind began thinking. A lone wolf would never have attacked two hunters in right mind. Especially if one was a demon.
I didn't get a very good look at it, but with the unusual aggression could it have been rabid? If so does that mean I have it now? I mean Alastor healed it. I hope that means he healed the virus as well.
I laid down to sleep with my mind still lingering on those thoughts until I fell asleep.
The next morning, I expected to wake up in my bed, but I woke up in the bed in Alastor's room. I jolted up when I realized where I was. I didn't see Alastor anywhere though.
My confusion didn't last long as I found a note on the nightstand near me. It was from Alastor. It said that he was called to Hell for business in the middle of the night and he moved me into his bedroom simply because he thought I would be more comfortable in here.
He didn't know exactly how long he was going to be away for. It could be only a few hours to a few days. Regardless of how long he was gone, Shadow would be here looking after me.
Not more than a few seconds after I set the note back down and stretch am I hug tackle back onto the bed. I'm startled at the sudden hug tackle. But the shock doesn't last long as I quickly realize who is hugging me. It's Shadow. I let a small giggle slip as I free an arm and pat his head.
"Hey Bud. You missed me that much?" I say as I can hear him start purring like a cat.
Of course, I never got a verbal response. He did give a slight nod instead. It has been a while since I had seen him.
After a few moments he lets go and leaves long enough for me to get dressed and ready for the day. After getting ready my phone starts ringing. I look at the screen to see Ted was calling. I answered the phone.
"Hey Ted, What's up?"
"Morning Faith. Sorry to call so early. I hope I didn't wake you."
"No worries I was already up. So, what's going on?"
"I'm sorry I have to ask you, but I need a favor."
I was a bit surprised by that. It is rare Ted asks for favors. He likes to do things by himself and be independent. He only asks for favors if he NEEDS to.
"Sure. What do you need Ted?" I ask curiously.
"Well...you know how I get the alcohol for the bar from two different places. The cheaper alcohol from a local place and the higher end alcohol from a town 30 minutes away."
"Yea?"
"Well, the liquor store in the town 30 minutes away doesn't normally deliver this far, but there was an employee who was willing to drive this far. Unfortunately, he had gotten sick. That means if I want it today, I have to go get it. If I don't need it right away the guy will deliver it when he is well enough to come back to work."
"And I am guessing you need it today?"
"Yea, but the problem is I promised Amy a month ago we would spend the day at a fair in a town 15 minutes in the opposite direction. I don't think it would be a good idea to go get the alcohol will Amy in the car."
"No. That definitely wouldn't make you look good."
"Normally I would ask if you could watch Amy while I pick it up, but she's really excited for today. Besides that, I worry she might feel like I'm abandoning her or going back on my promise."
I gently roll my eyes as he says that. When it comes to Amy, Ted is a worry wart. Besides getting out of town for a bit might be nice.
"Amy wouldn't think that. You're her dad and she loves you. But I don't mind picking it up for you. You might want to call them first though and let them know. You might also want to call the bar to let them know I will be delivering the alcohol."
"Thank you so much Faith! I owe you one."
"Don't worry about it. I'm happy to help. Besides I might find myself something while I am there."
After saying that it goes very silent. So silent you could hear a pin drop. I had to check my phone to make sure the call was still connected. It was.
"Ted? You still there?" I ask starting to feel concerned.
"Yea. Sorry. Faith, are you that's a good idea?"
"I don't see why not. I am legally allowed to drink."
I don't understand why I shouldn't be able to have a drink here and there. I'm aware of my limits and don't drink often. I'm over 21. So, it is legal for me to drink.
"Faith, my concern is that you might over do it. We both know how you get when you're drunk."
"Really Ted? Are you going to bring up the cactus incident again? I would think you know I have more control than that." I say slightly annoyed he is bringing that up again.
"Faith, on your 21st birthday you got very drunk and you almost had sex with a cactus. You were lucky Anna and I managed to stop you before you could. Other wise you would have been dealing with more than a hangover the next morning."
"Ok. Well, I don't own a cactus. So that can't happen again. I was dealing with a lot at the time. Is really a crime to forget about my problems for a bit? Lastly, how was I to know I was going to horny drunk when I have never drunk alcohol before?"
"Okay. That last point is fair. You wouldn't know that beforehand. But Faith, you are most likely still dealing with some heavy stuff right now. Anna hasn't been gone that long and I'm worried about you. Getting drunk once in a while isn't a big deal, I don't want you to start spiraling into thinking you need to get drunk to deal with your problems."
I look down at the floor for a moment and sigh. I have known a few people in my life who turned out that way. One major loss happens, and they use alcohol to cope. Before they know it, they are spending all their money on alcohol.
A couple have passed away from alcohol poisoning. And I had to cut out the rest. Most of them were mean drunks and I didn't want to be around that.
"I know Ted. I know you and Amy worry about how I am doing, but I promise I'm doing as good as I can be. I promise I won't use alcohol as a stress reliver. I might get something to have a small drink here and there."
After a moment I hear Ted sigh.
"Okay, Faith. But if you need anything don't hesitate to call. We are here for you."
"I know Ted. Thanks. Now go have a fun day with your daughter."
"Okay. Thanks again Sis."
"You're welcome, Bro."
I hear him hang up the phone. A small smile on my lips. Ted doesn't call me Sis often. I guess he wanted to let me know in a small way, that even if Anna isn't here, he still sees me as a sister.
Shadow comes out of hiding and wraps me in a hug before I could say anything. Figures he heard most of that. Still it's nice he wants to comfort when he thinks I am feeling sad.
"Thanks Bud. Wanna go somewhere new today?"
His head perks up at that. The look he gives is one of curiosity and excitement. He acts like a puppy sometimes, I swear.
The drive to the next town 30 minutes away was to pick up some items for Ted. I had left a note for Alastor if he came back while we were gone. I was enjoying the peacefulness of the longer drive to the next town. As excited as Shadow was, I could tell he was feeling a little nervous. I couldn't tell what he was so nervous about though. Maybe being so far from home.
