Catching Up
After Y/n left Ozpins' office, he decides to hang around Beacon for a while longer than previously expected. He remembers how the hallways looked back in his years, the way the teachers behaved and so much more. Today everything seems different and that might be a good thing for the newer generation of huntsmen and huntresses. Y/n is currently just walking along, minding his own business when he bumps into an open door. His eyes land on a numbered plate that says 'Room 409'.
(A cookie for everyone who gets the Bullet For My Valentine reference.)
Y/n:" Huh? My old classroom. I wonder how Professor Port is handling the current times."
A sly grin comes to his face as he prepares to surprise the entirety of the people in the room. Y/n swears they will be curious as to why he's still here or what he really wants at Beacon after all. His feet slowly move him inside as the footsteps echo through the room and all eyes land on him. Mostly confused people look around for any clues while the ones who know him are close to fangirling/fanboying all over him.
Y/n:" I see it's story time with you, Peter."
Prof. Port:" Ah, Y/n L/n. It has been a few years since I had the opportunity to talk to you. may I ask what brings you here?"
Y/n:" Memories. The years I've spent here, the time I've spent here, the pain I've been through. Yeah, it's going nicely so far."
Prof. Port:" Indeed it does. Students, I'd like you to meet Mr. Y/n L/n. A former student of mine and a great huntsman."
Y/n:" Nah, I wasn't that good. My stance was alright, but not the most fitting for my fighting style. Then again, I had the highest amount of aura in the whole first year."
Prof. Port:" Yes Yes, you did. But I did not hear about you taking on any missions for a while now. Why is that?"
Y/n:" Being on tour as a singer, guitar player and songwriter is hard enough as it is. I try my best to get some jobs in from time to time, but the last few months were full of touring from place to place. Then again, the time here payed of. So students: listen to what your teachers tell you! Follow their advice in your own way and don't stray from the path you are following now! The outside world isn't as glamourous as you might think it is. We huntsmen and huntresses are a symbol of peace and protection. It is of utmost importance to keep yourself and others alive. Do not hesitate to kill any Grimm you come across, because the world is full of them and they vary from grounded to flying Grimm and even aquatic Grimm. Don't strain yourself in a fight and realize when to take action and when not."
Prof. Port:" Exactly, Y/n. Do any of you have questions for Y/n?"
Suddenly a whole group of hands goes up, but Y/n adds that the questions have to be about his experience as a full fledged huntsman. A moment later there a fewer hands, but the ones that are still up seem very interested. The young man looks around the room and stops when he sees a familiar face.
Y/n:" Miss Schnee. Please ask your question."
Weiss:" I know it sounds cheesy, but why do you fight with a sword?"
Y/n:" It's not cheesy at all. I chose to fight with a sword, because I find it easier to handle than a mace or something else of that size. It gives me a better balance and allows me to hit my opponent from more angles. Also it's light and can tear through any Grimm I come across......And no, it doesn't turn into a gun, if you were about to ask, Miss Rose."
Ruby is slightly surprised at that, but takes her hand down with a short smile while Weiss sits down again. Another student than lifts his hand and gets up.
Prof. Port:" Mr. Arc. I see that there is an interest in the history of Mr. L/n's life. Your question please."
Jaune:" How different was Beacon when you were a student here?"
Y/n:" Ooohh, it was way different. The rooms and hallways were painted in other colors, we didn't have that much space in these classrooms and old Port here was a bit....he didn't pack as much weight as he does today."
A round of laughter echoes through the room while Port shoots a glare at Y/n who sheepishly rubs the back of his neck, knowing he may have messed uo a little with that sentence. Of course he doesn't mean harm to any of his friends, but a few jokes can be appreciated. After the laughing dies down, he gets serious again.
Y/n:" No, but really. The entrance exam was different. We weren't launched into a Grimm infested forest, we had to walk there without using any sort of tool to help us get down that cliff. The collectables weren't chess pieces, they were drawings. We had to assemble them in the right order and get the whole story together and then we were supposed to climb back to the top of the cliff again, but that wasn't as easy for me as it was for my partner..."
Prof. Port:" What happened to Iris after you graduated?"
Y/N:" She's back in Argus, probably working at their military base. I never heard from her again so far....But yeah, the dorms were the same as far as I can tell and the courtyard had a few more plants around it. The teachers though...That's a different story."
And soon a student that is unknown to Y/n gets up with a smug look on his face. He seems to be way too cocky for his own good, but Y/n plays it cool.
Y/n:" Got a name, buddy?"
Cardin:" Cardin Winchester and I'm not your 'buddy'. Why would you defend those freaks from Menagerie? Do you honestly believe we should be on the same level as these things?"
Y/n:" I hope your bean-like brain can comprehend what I say. I see a selfish, close-minded boy in front of me, who has nothing, but a few cowards as his teammates. You're hiding behind strength in numbers, but in a fight with a seasoned veteran, all of your team will fail within the first two minutes. It's not a guess, it's a natural fact...And to answer your question: yes, I believe humans and Faunus should be treated as equals. We were made to cooperate and that's what we've tried, but people like you have led us to war against them. People like you are the reason there will always be bad blood between all of us. Menagerie is home to a large amount of Faunus and I know for a fact that the White Fang has changed since their old leader stepped down, but there is hope for a better future."
Y/n then takes a deep breath and raises his voice at the whole class, bringing his point across.
Y/n:" Remember to never listen to people like Cardin! No matter if you're human, Faunus, android or anything else, you're all equal in my eyes and in the eyes of others as well! Everyone of us matters! WE should do everything for a more positive future! Do not let racism become the cause of war ever again!"
He shoots a hateful glare at Cardin who just scoffs and sits down again, turning his head away from the front of the room. It looks like no more questions are to be asked, so Y/n walks over to Professor Port and shakes his hand, signaling a goodbye for now. The young man walks out of the room and across the hallway again, but this time he bumps into someone on accident.
Y/n:" Apologies, I should have been more carefull to where I'm going."
???:" It's alright. You didn't spill the contents of my folders. but shouldn't you be in class, young man?"
As the two look up again and at each other, they each take a step back and try to find out who the other person is. It's easy for Y/n as he only knows one teacher with such light blond hair and green eyes. It's Glynda Goodwitch who stands in front of him.
Y/n:" Miss Goodwitch, it's nice to see you again after all those years."
Glynda:" Is that you, Y/n? Oh my, you certainly changed over time. How have you been?"
Y/n:" I'll gladly chat with you, but we should go somewhere else or people get the wrong idea about the two of us."
Glynda:" I agree. Let's go to the cafeteria."
He only nods and folows his former teacher towards the cafeteria that's pleasantly empty. Lunch is over already and both of them have eaten already, so there is enough time to talk about the things they want to discuss. A short chuckle comes from Y/n as he sits down and looks at Glynda.
Glynda:" Is something the matter?"
Y/n:" No, not really. It just seems unreal that I've already graduated. it feels like it was yesterday."
Glynda:" Well, it's nice to see you again, Y/n. How have the last few years been?"
Y/n:" Stressful, painful and loud. The concerts are different every time I get a chance to play somewhere. Vale crowds are definately more relaxed while people in the other cities tend to get rowdy. Some more, others less, but it's always fun nonetheless. Writing, recording and mixing songs though takes quite a while. I was dealing with a severe case of pain in my neck for the last weeks. it goes away quickly, but when it's there, I don't wanna move my head at all."
Glynda:" Are you taking pain killers against it?"
Y/n:" No, I don't. I let it fade away on its own. I don't wanna pump my body full with any medication. You know about the risks of taking too many pills, don't you?"
Glynda:" Yes, I'm aware. And what about your family? Have you had the chance to visit them again?"
Y/n:" Talk about two sides of the same coin. In public, my parents and I always had to play the loving and caring family, but when we got home, I was met with the disappointed gazes of both of them. Oh sure, I'm the black sheep of the family because I'm a musician. So what? Music is my passion and I still help around Remnant the way I can. It's not like I choose between the two and abandone one for the other."
Glynda:" I'm sure they're still proud of you, Y/n. They may not show it, but they definately feel that way. Anyways, what brought you back to Beacon?"
Y/n:" Curousity. I wanted to catch up with you and the rest. While I was in Ozpin's office, I was met with Team RWBY and Team JNPR. A set of peculiar individuals for sure. Then I visited Peter and his class and answered a few questions. now we're here."
Glynda:" Ozpin wants you to fight at the Vytal tournament to show the students what a real huntsman can do. Do you know who you'll fight?"
Y/n:" No clue, really. I just said Oz should be sure my opponent is in their best shape. Maybe I have to fight you, maybe Peter, maybe Bartholomew. I just know I will be prepared for anything."
Glynda:" If it's any of us, be sure to give it your best. You were the second best in combat class, right after...well."
Y/n:" I know and it still stings...She would've been a great huntress by now. And I always fight in her honor. Knowing I will always have her in my heart, even if it's already close to shattering."
Glynda:" So you didn't find the right one for yourself?"
Y/n:" Nobody really is the right one for me because I will never reach their standards. People expect great things of me, saving everyone and being able to lend a hand to those in need. But I can't. I am not the huntsman Remnant wants me to be, yet I still live up to this day. I never looked for another relationship after the...incident."
Glynda:" Then how did you hold on for so long, apart from music?"
Y/n:" Alcohol. Lots and lots of alcohol. I was basically a never ending barrel for booze and much more. One time, I was so full of it that I didn't recognize anything anymore. Everything was blurry and I wanted to stay away from society for as long as possible...Then my manager came along and pulled me out of that state with a rehabilitation programm. Anything that could get me addicted was taken away from me and my appartement was cleansed from such stuff as well."
Glynda:" You don't look like you were addicted to anything."
Y/n:" I learned to enjoy life a lot more. The people who helped me were nice enough to check in at least three times a week. they helped me with cleaning, cooking, shopping and so on. To pay them back, I play a charity concert at the facility every year. The money is used to help other addicts out of their misery."
Glynda:" You're a good man, Y/n. I wish more people would be as kind and helpful as you. Maybe then we could solve more problems."
Y/n:" I told the studetns in Peter's class that we're all equal and should be treated as such. It doesn't get us anywhere if we fight each other for what each party thinks is right. I hate racist people, I hate discrimination and hate bullying, so if I ever see anyone from Beacon bullying someone else, I will not hesitate to hurt them."
Glynda is speechless after that short outburst analyzing the man who sits across from her. He looks at the table with sligthly trembling hands while he gritts his teeth at upcoming memories.
Glynda:" I know it upsets you. It has caused problems for you in the past, because people lied to you or stabbed you in the back. I don't normally do this, but maybe I could get you an opportunity to fight in my class this week."
Y/n:" I don't wanna be a burden to you or anyone. Also, it wouldn't be fair to the students, if the have to fight a proffesional."
Y/n then gets up a few seconds before the bell rings. He walks out of the cafeteria and makes his way towards a bench in the courtyard. His thoughts are running wild at the moment, chaging from past to present and making him get lost in the images played before his eyes. The H/c haired man isn't as happy as he was when the day started, knowing that the cuts on his body aren't completely closed yet. His hands travel towards the left pocket of his pants as a short white package of cigarettes gets revealed.
Y/n:" It's just to calm myself. I'm not drifting back to addiction because of that."
He sighs and puts a cigarette between his lips and lights it, trying his best to find peace again. Maybe his decisions were right, maybe they were wrong. It definately feels like he did good for himself and others, raising money for charity with everything he does. Y/n's shows are meant for everyone, no matter the age, gender, sexuality or heritage.
