Chapter 7
As I ran, the wind blew harder and harder into my face. I let a smile show, that was good. The wind would start to change the path of the lava towards the West, while ran to the East. I passed more trees, more rivers. I took another gulp of water. The trees at the back were crackling, falling, burning.
Terrified, I ran forward, always on the alert. Despite my efforts to keep away from the trees, I was forced closer to them as the beach grew smaller and rockier. One tree began to topple. I screamed. Its burning branches sent sparks flying and the entire forest seemed to groan. I stood, mesmerized by the awful beauty, before I realized that I had stopped running and my life was in peril.
A spark caught my pants. I ran through the water, soaking my pants. They wouldn't catch fire now. Stopping quickly, I dunked my sack of fruit into the water as well.
The forest fell behind me. I stumbled forward, the heat threatening to suffocate me and burn me to death. The wind blew so hard that I had to walk into it to keep from falling. But I was out of danger of lava.
I lost track of time. The sun set, and rose, and set again. I was dead on my feet, but I dared not sleep. No, not until this test was done. As the sun rose for a second time, I saw a small metal door in the side of the volcano. I ran towards it, but before I could reach it, I collapsed. I managed to force down an apple, savoring the wetness. It didn't help much.
I gave up the thought of standing. Crawling towards the door seemed my only choice. I inched along, until, finally, it was a reality. I put my hand on the handle, crying without tears, only sobbing.
Then, the Earth moved. There was a thunderous roar, and I didn't need to look up to know that the volcano had erupted. I wrenched open the door and threw myself inside, slamming it behind me. Everything went silent.
A light flickered on overhead. I was in a small room where every wall was covered in papers. I looked at one. It had rows of neat writing on it.
It is the beginning of eternity, the end of time and place, the beginning of the end and the end of every space.
I looked at the paper for a second, then laughed. The letter E! I knew that one! This part was all about solving riddles! I smiled. This part I would be good at.
