Chapter 6: The Assailant

The drive from New York to Philadelphia wasn't a long one- roughly two hours, and the traffic was light. However, because they were driving at night Casey had asked that April, Shelby, and Raph all try to stay awake so he'd have someone to talk to. He figured at least one out of the three of them wouldn't fall asleep.

Shelby was not one of those individuals. Once she popped her ear buds in, the combination of music and the van rocking as it drove was enough to lull her to sleep. It was a nice change of pace- sleep often eluded her.

But it seemed as soon as the drive started, it ended. She woke to the sensation of the van coming to a halt. "Here, Leo?" Casey asked from the front.

"Yeah, I'd say this factory's abandoned. Anyone disagree?" Shelby's scrunched her face in protest of all the noise. Her ear buds must of fell out at some point.

"This whole neighborhood seems abandoned." April commented sadly from the passenger seat.

"I think we should still scout it out." Raph stated.

"That's a good idea. I'll go with Raph and make sure the place is empty. Then we'll unload." Leo said.

Shelby opened her eyes as the back of the van opened, and the two turtles slipped out into the night. She blinked a couple times, trying to make sense of her surroundings. She realized that she wasn't laying across the floor of the van as she initially thought. She was wedged in between Mikey's plastron and his arm, the top of her head brushing his neck, her ear pressing against his collarbone. She could hear his heart beat.

"Good morning, sleeping beauty." Mikey spoke, looking down at Shelby with a pleased smile. Shelby, however, was instantly flushed with embarrassment and shot up, exiting the van. Her heart raced as the air around her began to chill, and frost crawled across the sidewalk at her feet.

Mikey followed her. "Hey, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable!" He apologized. In the light of the moon, Shelby could see the sadness etched on his features. "I just thought you looked cute, and I- ugh!" He hit himself in the forehead with the heel of his hand. "I'm really sorry, Shelby."

Shelby took a deep breath, keeping her arms wrapped around her stomach as she calmed her nerves. "No, it's not you." She shook her head. "I was the one who made it weird. I just- I panicked." The air warmed back up as she found her composure. "I panicked for no reason. I mean, what's a car ride nap between friends, right?" She teased, though her voice was still tight.

Mikey paused, seeming unable to find his voice for a moment, before he flashed a small smile. "Right." He nodded, then re-entered the back of the van.

Shelby stared after him, a twisting knot forming in her stomach. She instantly regretted speaking. She sighed, turning away from the van again and pacing away. She was so bad at this.

"Hey, where are you going?" Leo's voice called out, and Shelby turned to see Leo and Raph returning to the van.

"Oh, just getting some fresh air." Shelby flashed a strained smile.

"Yeah, maybe I'd believe you if you didn't leave an ice rink wherever you walked." Raph rolled his eyes. "Anyways, the building's clear. Are you helping set up?"

Shelby glared. "Don't be dumb, of course I am."

"Hey, play nice you two." Leo scolded as he opened up the van. "Come on, gang. Let's get set up. Then we'll get some rest before we go over plans in the afternoon. We're hunting that mutant down at dusk."

"Sounds like a plan. Oh! Shelby!" Donnie picked a box up from the van and jogged over to Shelby, a wide smile gracing his face. "I brought something along that I was hoping you could try out- I was gonna give it to you on the ride here, but you fell asleep."

Shelby took the box. "What is it?" She peered inside. "Clothes?"

"Synthetically modified to match your mutagen signature!" He exclaimed. When Shelby raised a brow, he explained further. "These are just prototypes, but if they work correctly, they should transform with you whenever you change into a wolf. That way, you won't have to keep going shopping for clothes all the time."

Shelby blinked. "Wow. That's actually really awesome, Donnie. Thanks for thinking of that. I'll make sure I wear them on the mission." She smiled, before following Casey and April into the building.

"I'm SO glad Leo's letting us catch some Z's. I. Am. Exhausted." Casey sighed, practically throwing down the supplies he was carrying. April huffed in irritation but held her tongue as she set her stuff down. "Not you though, right Small Fry? You already got some shut eye." He winked, punching Shelby in the arm.

"Shut up, Jones." She punched him back. "I already feel bad enough without you teasing me."

"Why do you feel bad?" April inquired.

"Because- I don't know, the whole situation was embarrassing, right?" Shelby whispered as the turtles began to enter the room. "I mean, I woke up and I was practically on top of Mikey. And he's too nice of a guy to wake me up. I feel bad."

"Um, I promise you he didn't mind." April giggled slightly as she spoke softly.

"Yeah, and I don't think Mikey is capable of feeling embarrassment." Casey added with a smirk. "Don't be so hard on yourself, Brad- Shelby."

Shelby gave a small nod of approval at his correction. "Nice save. Let's grab some more stuff so we don't get yelled at."

"Good idea." April agreed, and the trio walked towards the doors. Shelby kept her head down as she past them, focusing on the sound of everyone's feet shuffling against the cement floor instead. Her senses weren't as heightened in her human form compared to her wolf form, but she could still pick up eight pairs of feet walking, pivoting, and shifting their weight.

She stopped, her muscles tensing. "I thought you said the building was clear." She muttered just loud enough for Leonardo to hear.

Leo looked at her. "What?"

Just as the word left his lips, there was a faint whizzing sound of something small cutting through the air, before Donnie let out a yell. Everyone's eyes snapped over to see him fall to his knees as he clutched one of his arm, which had an arrow sticking out of it.

Seconds later, another one fired at Leo, but he was just quick enough to prevent the arrow from wedging itself in his shell. "It's coming from above!"

"How could we have missed someone?" Raph yelled as he grabbed out one of his sai, using his free hand to help Mikey get Donatello to safety.

"It must be the Foot!" April concluded.

"Split up and find them!" Leo commanded.

Shelby grabbed for her onos, but they were packed away in her bag. Panicked, she ran for the bag, throwing herself behind some of the boxes as her grabbed the twin throwing axes. Another arrow was released- Raph yelled out as it just missed his head, catching itself in the loose ends of his bandana.

"That came from the rafters." Casey shouted. "April, do you magic-sensing thing and tell me where to shoot a puck."

Shelby gripped her onos, ready to spring out of the way of an arrow as April placed her fingers on her temples, her face scrunched in concentration. "North side of the building... wedged between a rafter connecting to the wall and one supporting the roof."

"I don't know where the north side of the building is!" Casey exclaimed.

"Your left, Casey, your left!" Donnie yelled.

Casey nodded, throwing a hockey puck up into the air. "GOONGALA!" He screamed with a sinister grin as he whacked the hockey puck. It sailed through the building, aimed right at two adjacent rafters. Loud creaking could be heard above as the assailant scrambled to avoid being hit. Another soft whizzing sound was the only warning they got before an arrow lodged itself in Mikey's plastron.

"Holy chalupa!" He cried, grabbing the shaft and trying to yank it out. Donatello used his good arm to smack his hand away.

Shelby felt the air crackle around her as she glared up into the rafters. Whoever it was, they were aiming for the turtles and only the turtles. They purposely aimed for Mikey even though Casey was the one who attacked her.

They hit Mikey.

Shelby tried her best to suppress the transformation, but the rage consumed her thoughts, and her body contorted and shifted into a white wolf. The onos and what was left of her clothes fell to the floor as she growled, using her hyper-senses to lock on the figure in the rafters. Now they were paying attention to Shelby as she raced towards them, leaping into the air and trying to snap at them. They were too high.

Shelby's fur bristled in frustration as Leo used some stacked boxes to maneuver himself onto the rafters. "I'll flush her out!"

He raced forward, perfectly balanced on the wooden planks as he rushed towards the archer. They grabbed the rafter and attempted to swing out of the way of Shelby awaiting on the floor, but Shelby simply lunged and tackled them out of the air. They skidded across the cement for a few seconds before Shelby pinned them. The only protection the assailant had from getting mauled was her bow, which she shoved hard into Shelby mouth as the mutant snapped, the wood becoming etched with ice.

"Stop!" April yelled, running over and grabbing the weapon from the archer, but keeping it firmly locked in Shelby's jaws. "If you kill her, we'll never know if she's with the Foot or not." April snapped. Shelby paused for a couple moments, before she backed away, removing her jaws from the bow. Her eyes never left the archer, and she bared her teeth, her ears pressed flat against her head as the particles in the air around her began to freeze into tiny shards of ice. She didn't need to speak to tell the attacker if she made one wrong move, she was dead.

"Can't you call your dog off or something?" The woman asked- her voice was a shaky mix of annoyance and fear.

"She's not a dog. She'll back off when she knows you're not gonna shot any more arrows at us." Leonardo approached her, katanas still in hand. "Who are you?"

"Why should I tell you?" She asked.

Shelby barked loudly in her face.

"Okay!" She shrieked, covering her face. "Monica. My name is Monica Mireles."

"Who do you work for?"

She lowered her arms, looking up at Leo with confusion. "Uh... my manager's name is Kelly."

Leo looked just as confused. "You're not with the Foot?"

"I literally have no idea what that it. I work at an Urgent Care- well, worked." Monica stated. Shelby stopped baring her teeth, but her muscles stayed tense as she sniffed at Monica. She smelled strange- almost similar to the turtles, but drier, like a desert.

"Okay, if you're not with the Foot, then why did you shoot at us?" Raph demanded. Next to him, Donatello was working out how to get the arrows out of his arm and Mikey's shell.

"Because you're mutants!" Monica shot back. "I wasn't planning on going down without a fight- not after what that one monster did to my family." She voice caught at the end of her sentence, and she gritted her teeth. "But you beat me. So if you're going to kill me, just get it over with."

Shelby looked at Leo for permission. He shook his head.

"We're not gonna kill you." April knelt down next to Monica. "You're that girl they were talking about on the news- the one who's family was killed by a scorpion mutant?"

Monica nodded. "Yes. All the family I had in this country was in that backyard. Now I have nothing." She shook her head. "Except Riley. But he's not much for conversation."

Casey raised a brow. "Who's Riley?"

"My pet iguana." Monica shrugged like that was a normal statement. Shelby blinked. No wonder she smelled like reptile. "He's up in the rafters somewhere, by a heat vent no doubt. Part of the city's still functioning, so there's still electricity. I just kept the lights off in case- in case that monster came back."

"We're here to hunt down that monster and find out where it came from." Leo stated.

Monica looked surprised. "You're going to fight a mutant? I figured-"

"That all mutants are bad?" April guessed. Monica nodded. "There's a handful that aren't. Most of them are standing in this room."

Monica eyed Shelby and Leo, before returning her attention back to April. "Are you a mutant?"

"Eh- technically I'm part alien. Not sure if that counts." April extended her hand. "I'm April O'Neil." Monica shook her hand tentatively, and April helped her to her feet. April gestured to Casey. "That's Casey Jones."

"Don't worry, I'm 100% man." Casey winked.

April directed her attention to Leo. "This is Leonardo." Leo gave a slight nod in greeting.

April gestured to Raph, Donnie, and Mikey. "The turtle in purple is Donatello. The one in red is Raphael. That one is Michelangelo." April turned Monica to face Shelby, who's fur had fallen a bit flatter, making her look much less intimidating. "And this is Shelby."

"Pleasure." Monica stated with a bit of sarcasm in her tone. Shelby huffed in annoyance.

"So, by the look of all the boxes brought in, my guess is that you guys plan on setting on camp here." Monica continued, looking at Leo.

"Yes, we had- when we thought this factory was abandoned." Leo admitted. "But we can find somewhere else." Casey looked at him in alarm.

Monica pursed her lips in thought. "Tell you what. I'll let you all stay the night if you let me tag along to kill that mutant."

Raph scoffed. "Like we need dead weight dragging us down."

"I don't know bro, the arrow in my shell kinda tells me she's not really dead weight- more like living weight." Mikey stated.

"And she managed to go undetected by you and Leo in your first sweep." Donnie reminded him, making the red-clad turtle grumble in irritation. "She may not have ninjutsu training, but she's stealthy enough to slip past you two."

Leonardo seemed to consider everything they had said, before nodding. "You've got yourself a deal."
