Nyx

The world began with Nothing. Nyx ruled all, though it was a lonely existence to begin. Then, after the years had stretched for longer than she could remember as there was nothing to mark the passing of the days, a mass came into sight beneath her; growing larger and larger until she gazed at it, almost longingly. To herself, she began to call it Tyr.

So it was that her quiet contemplation became more. Thoughts began to cloud her mind with ideas of what all could come into this Nothingness that was all she had ever known. As she watched Tyr, day after day, she saw things begin to take root on his surface, growing and becoming more and more as the time passed. Only then did she find the courage to create for herself a shape, to descend from the darkness to walk upon the cool, rocky surface, looking for the spirit of the land. With concentration, her thoughts shaped her spirit into a slender being with two arms and two legs, the same dark color as all she had ever seen.

She wandered for what would become known as hours, climbing over rocks, stepping into pools of water, laughing at the tickling feeling of the fine weeds that grew in the shallows.

"Who are you to be walking so boldly? From whence have you come? I did not create you," A deep voice came from behind Nyx.

The unexpected sound was enough to startle her, and she turned. Before her stood a solid being, a splash of brown on the top of his head, and eyes that glowed with the same green of the plants that had begun to sprout. His form was stocky and looked strong enough to lift the large boulders she had walked around and clambered over. She felt her eyes widen at the sight, a pleasant feeling rushing through her. She was not alone.

"I call myself Nyx," she answered, surprised at the sound of her own voice. It was mellow, and floated almost teasingly through the air to caress the other's ears. "And I come from everywhere. I was nothing and yet everything, until this appeared. Who are you?"

"I have no name, as there have been none to speak to me of them. I have been focused on other things. Now go, leave me in peace," he returned, sounding not nearly as pleased as Nyx was at having another near him, and to know that he was no longer alone.

"I call you Tyr," she said, a secret smile spreading across her lips. Speaking to another was entertaining. Perhaps she should put her energies toward creating things in her home, and yet, then she would no longer be Nothing. Would that lessen her? "I believe it is a nice name, and perfect for one such as you. Now I will leave, but it will not be the last time we meet."

Before giving Tyr the chance to answer, she released the form she had created and returned to the black expanse she called home. Her days became filled with watching the ever changing surface of Tyr's face below her. Towering structures made of rock appeared and soon were covered with different growing things than she had walked among, and the lower places had still different plants. It was amazing to watch the creativity of the grumpy being she had met.
