Tshepang
The temporary bubbly feeling that flared disappeared as the storm grew and we entered the house.
Shay's mother led us to a four seat sized table. It wasn't the biggest space but it wasn't like I was imagining a mansion or anything.
What I was imagining was candles. Not for loadshedding but well that's what's expected. Candles strategically placed, maybe a little mist or something (Though how it would be inside, I don't know) and a Ouija board. But none of that was present.
A succulent sat in the middle of the table with a beaded place mat. The lights were on since the storm had effectively stolen the last few hours of daytime. The continuous battering of lightning added to the stereotypical horror scene that, at that moment of time, was my life.
"Hun-" Shay's father stopped mid greeting. Looking around the room, he summed up that we were about to start and promptly returned to whatever room he walked out of. A door slammed somewhere in the house.
"Umm," I looked around for anything that said we were gonna do it. ",how exactly are we doing this?"
Her hand went to her neck and pulled a necklace from under her shirt. It was a simple beaded chain with a letter on the end, S.
"All I need is this. This isn't some fancy ceremony." She nodded her head to the succulent. "Each one of you put a finger on the pot."
"That doesn't sound right." Caleb mumbled but did as we were told. Each one of us stood awkwardly around the table trying to do what was ordered. We ended up bunched together one end of the table.
Shay's mother stared at our hands or the pot, I wasn't sure. She was an older version of Shay yet with deep green eyes. Murky, barely green really.
A flicker. My head snapped out as the light bulb above slowly faded out. The others watched too as every light in the house did the same.
"There's one of you missing." Shay's mother tore through my rising fear.
"Toni." Shay answered, probably the only one brave to still talk. "She's wherever she is, I guess."
"She's okay..." Her mother cocked her head to one side. "There's a little girl. She's looking at someone. I'm not sure who."
"Could it be?" Connor whispered. "Can you ask the girl if she's died?"
Shay's mother looked to her left, seemingly gazing out at her garden. However I was starting to think she was looking at something else entirely.
"She's...not here anymore." She finally answered. Her head snapped to us. She met each one of our gazes. "His coming."
My head involuntarily looked around the room, expecting something. "She said his coming?"
"I... I sense this overwhelming anger." She closed her eyes. "It's vague. I can't seem to figure out who it's coming from. It's as it's fading."
"Or being forgotten." Caleb volunteered. I didn't notice before but he was shaking, almost violently. Lightning flashed illuminating Unathi's tear streaked face.
"It's strange..." She continued. "My guess is it's this boy. Zake, right? That's you? Yes it must be. I feel this anger, hatred towards most of you."
"Most of us?" Connor choked out. Thunder begun to shake the house as if we were having our own earthquake. The contents of the house shook and rattled.
"Yes." She looked at each one of us. "I sense secrets. Jealously, anger, hate, all these things between you four."
"Four?" I asked. "There's five of us here."
"Yes, I can count. But the intent from Zake is different when it comes to Shay."
"Shay?!" I stepped away from the stupid pot and faced her. "What the hell?! Why you?"
"Hey, I don't know! I'm in the same boat as you!" Shay yelled back, shaking from anger as I got in her face.
"You should find Toni." Shay's mother continued regardless.
I looked at her, venom seething through my eyes. "Why?"
"She'll be the one to suffer the most. He promises."
