Chapter 11
Months went by with no set trial. David Kingston still pleaded his innocence. The Matthews family got more and more fustrated. How could the court system not see David as a dangerous man?
All of Debbie's favorite holidays came and went. The Matthews faced the first Thanksgiving and Christmas without her. At dinner, Zelda and Harley kept a chair and place open in honor of Debbie. Everyone missed Debbie's beautiful prayer before the dinner was commenced.
It was now 1991. Detective May was not giving up yet. Collecting the evidence, interviews, etc and keeping David's charges pressed against him, May was not letting his guard down.
Detective May was sure this year would be the year the trial would be set. David could not be left to roam and possibly kill someone else. His hands need to in hand cuffs at all times.
Zelda and Harley were raising the twins and Daymon best as they could. Times have changed since Zelda and Harley were parents in the 60s and 70s. They asked some of their younger friends and neighbors what the new "normal" was when it came to raising children.
Most of the their friends advise them to raise the boys the way they felt Debbie would have wanted . No matter what, the Kingston boys would make their mom proud.
Every weekend, Harley and Zelda went and visited Debbie's grave. They always brought her a fresh bouquet of pink roses. Pink roses were Debbie's favorite.
Life would never be back to normal for the Matthews. A new routine with one of the most important people gone makes it diffcult.
Going on to Harley more, he had 9 years ago a quadruple heart bypass surgery. He was also on nitroglycerin to help open his arteries. But, with all the stress and tramua from the death of Debbie, his heart has weakened and caused more health issues. He is trying to be strong for Zelda and the boys.
Zelda was also still teaching at the University of New Mexico. Everyone praised Zelda for her ways of teaching, during this difficult time.
The boy's did miss their dad, but they knew that he hurt their mommy.
Sometimes, Daymon asks Zelda the hardest questions.
"Grandma, why did daddy hurt mommy? Is that why god and mommy are still visiting?" Daymon asked Zelda one day after school.
"Well baby, we don't know why your daddy hurt your mommy. Your mommy was very special to visit god because she got her angel wings," Zelda explained with a lump in her throat.
"Angel wings?" Daymon said.
"Well yeah Daymon. Your momma is now an angel," Zelda explained as best as she could.
"So she can fly around us?" Daymon asked puzzled.
"Sort of Daymon. She is always with you, especially in your heart," Zelda gestured towards Daymon's heart.
"Wow grandma that's amazing that mommy can do that. I got to tell Dustin and Daniel," Daymon said running to his shared bedroom.
Zelda was still taking it hardest out of everyone. When Daymon asked question likes this, it was overwhelming. These are questions that Zelda often didn't have the answers for. She often looked to her lectures or the church for wisdom to pass on to her boys.
As for Debbie's brothers, Donny and Sean, they were back to what "normal" life was. Donny held guilt in his heart after realizing back to a trip he and David had on March 22nd: 6 days before the murder.
Donny had done another interview with Detective May. Donny came out with more evidence against David.
On March 22nd, David and Donny had driven down towards the Taylor Ranch home together. Donny claimed that he "respects" a mans privacy and didn't question why David jumped the wall of Debbie's house.
Detective May concluded that David was spying on Debbie and figuring out the best way to break in.
May didn't suspect Donny had any idea that was David's plans. Donny was an innocent bystander.
More information had become public information. Debbie's body had been administered the ether with a soft object such as a washcloth, pillow etc. David then tampered with that and disposed of it. But, the administration of the ether on Debbie's face caused minors burns and she had a small cut on her lip.
The necklace that she had been wearing, which is why they charged David with aggravated burglary, was forcibly yanked off her neck , causing minor injuries on her neck.
The level of ether in Debbie's body was compatible to anesthesia for surgical purposes. Debbie's body also had already have been unconcisous by the time she was placed in the tub. To also make matters worse and prove David was the killer, Debbie had a profound fear of drowning. She never took baths but only showers so that proved how much more David was gulity.
Detective May also had asked more people in regards to confirming the timing of Zelda's phone call to Debbie the night of the murder and or when Joanna the neighbor found Debbie.
Zelda and Harley called the phone company and found out Debbie and Zelda talked at 8:45pm on the night of March 27th. So, Debbie was alive at least till after she hung up with Zelda. However, was it possible Debbie was hostage at this point? Nothing was out of the question.
Joanna arrived between 7:15-7:20 am the morning of March 28th. The window of Joanna's house was open and she didn't hear anything.
The time of death was confirmed to be between 9-10pm March 27 or the morning of March 28 between 5-6am. The latter would be due to the accidental drowning if Debbie had still had a pulse and woke up after being rendered unconscious and she ultimately didn't have the strength to pull herself up.
It would take a few more months, but Debbie's case would be taken to trial.
