Golden Class (Old Version)

“Hush, little baby, don’t say a word. Mama’s gonna buy you a mockingbird. And if that mockingbird won’t sing, Mama’s gonna buy you a diamond ring. If that diamond ring turns brass, Mama’s gonna buy you a looking glass. And if that looking glass-.” The lullaby that the mother sang with her sweet voice ended suddenly as her cottage suddenly shook. She hesitantly stood up from her chair next to the rocking crib in which her adorable and new-born daughter was sleeping soundlessly. The mother stayed still until her cottage shook again. Her eyes widened and shot to her baby who started waking up. When the cottage shook for the third time, she wasted no time in picking up her baby from the crib. The new-born started crying as her mother ran out into the hall and out of the house through the front door. She followed the dirt path, the cries from the baby only loudening as they ran. A loud explosion came from behind, deafening the mother and possibly the baby for a few seconds.

The mother whipped her head around to see her entire cottage on fire. She squinted her eyes at the bright sight, but they widened when she saw the outline of a dark figure in a trench coat and a fedora hat. She started running again, into the forest that surrounded her cottage. To calm the baby down, the mother only continued her lullaby.

“If the looking glass gets broke, Mama’s gonna buy you a billy goat. And if that billy goat won’t pull, Mama’s gonna buy you a cart and bull. And if that cart and bull turn over, Mama’s gonna buy you a dog named Rover.  And if that dog-.” The new-born wasn’t crying as loudly as before when the mother got interrupted again, but this time not by a shook.

“Singing to the demon, that’s cute.” The mother stopped and looked to see the man step out from behind a tree. His black trench coat hung to his ankles and his fedora covered half his face, but tips of blonde hair peaked out from the side.

“She’s not a demon!” The mother hissed, her sweet voice from before completely gone. A dark and menacing chuckle came from the man.

“Keep telling that yourself, Margret. Now I’m going to make this simple. Give me that child, and I would not only spare your life, but I’d rid your life from the demon child.” He offered, but the mother only clutched her calm baby closer.

“Never, you foal beast!” She hissed as she took steps back.  The man growled and took a step forward, reaching his arm out to her.

“Margret, don’t make this any harder.” She shook her head violently. He took one more step towards her, and that’s when she ran. Trees blurred past her and the footsteps of the man following her faded slowly in time. But that didn’t stop her. She continued running until gates appeared in front of her. She looked past the house to see a street with houses aligning it. She went to the first house that she saw and checked the gate. It was open. She stumbled onto the lot and to a half-open window. Inside she saw a rocking chair next to an empty crib in the dark room. She pushed the window fully open with one arm and climbed inside, her baby now asleep. When she entered, she fully saw  the room. The crib looked new, but the rocking chair old. There was a toy box next to the crib with newly bought toys. The walls were painted baby blue, the same colour as the crib. In the room there was also a cupboard with nappies and bottles on top, never used. On once glance at the room it showed that nothing was ever used, indicating the mother was still expecting.

But there was one thing that gave it all away.

Next to the rocking chair there was a dustbin, overflowing with used tissues.

The mother smiled sadly and placed her baby in the crib. She didn’t want to, but she had to. But before she left, she continued her lullaby.

“And if that dog named Rover won’t bark, Mama’s gonna buy you a horse and cart. And if that horse and cart fall down, you’ll still be the sweetest little baby in town.” She stood up and searched around until she found a stack of papers with baby names. Some names were scratched over, a few underlined. I’m guessing they were deciding on a name. One name however was circled around in red. Joshua. They were going to call their baby Joshua. She smiles as she took a pen and a blank piece of paper and wrote something on it. She went back to the crib and placed it down near her baby. She leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

“Good bye, my little Mia.” And with that, the mother escaped through the window and back into the woods…

15 Years later

Breathe in…breathe out…open eyes…okay…

I pushed open the gate to my new school and entered the school grounds. The place was absolutely massive. Like a mansion. But that’s only the school building, there’s still the two dormitories. This is Cross Academy, a school I’m forced to go to since my dad had to come here for a job. I had to leave my school, my friends, my birth place. I’m not excited to go to this school, especially since we have to stay at the school.

“You are Mia Henderson, correct?” I heard and looked to see a silver haired boy with a day class uniform and a committee sash over his bicep. The school was split in two. Day class and night class. I don’t know why though, but I don’t really care. I nodded.

“Come on then.” He said simply and turned around, started walking with his hands in his pockets. I started following behind him slowly. I examine him as we walked, his hair in particular. His shoulders were slouched, hands in pockets, and he was either bored or annoyed. Probably both. He apparently saw me staring out of the side of his eye.

“What is it?” He asked, annoyed. I chuckled to myself.

“It’s nothing.” I said turning my head to the side as we walked, a ghost smile on my face. I was suddenly stopped when I walked into the guy’s back as he stopped. I took a few steps back and he turned to me, more annoyed now but now I could see his face clearly. His eyes were silver-purplish kind of colour. His eyes were full of annoyance, but sadness was defiantly behind them. He had two ear piercings on his right ear. There was a black tattoo on his neck, but his collar covered most of it so I couldn’t make out what it was. He was about to speak, but I interrupted him.

“Why do you look so sad?” I asked, tilting my head to the side to a bit. He blinked in surprise but didn’t show it.

“You-” I cut him off once again.

“Don’t try to deny it. From the looks of it you lost someone?” I guessed. I just stared at him and he hesitated, staring at me with lost eyes. He turned around and started walking again, not sparing me any glance. I followed him, but a large distance from him. The path to the main building across the bridge seemed a lot longer now, especially when he was walking in a slow pace.

“Hey, sad-man, what’s your name?” I asked casually, but my hidden intention was sort-of clear. I could see through his pockets that he clenched his fists.

“I would appreciate it if you not call me sad-man.” He said through clenched teeth. I smiled evilly to myself, since he still had his back to me.

“If you give me your name, then maybe I’ll reconsider  calling you sad-man.” I told him and he hesitated.

“Zero.” He answered silently.

“Zero who?” I asked, curious. He hesitated once more.

“Zero Kiryu.” I nodded slowly. It was an odd name. I ‘hmm’ed’ in interest as I followed behind, skipping now. He sighed in annoyance.

“Will you stop that?” He groaned. I tilted my head to the side as I examine him further, this time from the side view as I moved forward. His skin was pale. Paler than normal. Plus his long silver hair looked as if it’s natural and not dyed, seeing as he is so young. We reached the school building and he led me to the headmaster’s office.

“Thank you Zero, for bringing Mia here.” The headmaster’s told him once we arrived. Zero only hn’ed in response before leaving.

“Well now, Mia Henderson, I personally welcome you to Cross Academy! I hope you enjoy your stay!” He said rather cheerful, surprising me.

“Great to be here…” I said, uncertain.

“Now then, you will begin school tomorrow. I’ll get someone to give you a tour and escort you to your room. Your uniform will be in your room. If you have any questions, you can ask me. Now your forms all seem to be in check, so if you could just run out and find Zero before he completely disappears and let him help you.” I wanted to groan but figured that would be impolite. I nodded.

“Thank you headmaster.” I said, exiting the room and running down the hall in the direction Zero went. His hair was the first thing I spotted.

“Zero!” I called out, and he turned to me with annoyance.

“What?” He hissed.

“The Headmaster said you have to give me a tour and show me to my room.” He sighed loudly in annoyance before staring at me.

“Fine then, come.” He said, turning around and hurrying off. I had to jog to keep up with him as we went around the school. I must say, this is the fastest tour I have ever been on.

“The Night class’s dormitory, which is strictly forbidden to Day class students like you.” He said fast and wanted to go off but I stopped him.

“Wait, wait.” He sighed and turned to me.

“What is it?” I looked at the dormitory.

“Why is the school split in two?” I asked, curious. He sighed.

“I don’t know, doesn’t matter.” He said, turning around and walking again in the direction of the Sun dormitory. I ran to catch up with him. He only entered in the hall with me and pointed to a room before leaving. I rolled my eyes and entered the room. It was a plain and simple room with two white beds in it. On one of the beds there was a neatly folded uniform. Probably mine. I took my baggage and started packing everything in the cupboards and wardrobe on my side of the room. After that it was about 1PM, 1 hour before the Day classes end and 4 hours before the Night classes start. I laid down on my bed, completely and utterly bored out of my mind. What can I do for an hour? I smiled knowingly to myself as I stared up at the off ceiling light. I held out my right arm towards it and focused. I squinted my eyes when nothing happened. I tried to concentrate even harder, when the light swung a little. But because there was an open window behind me, I blamed it on the wind. I concentrated even more. Nothing else in my mind beside the light. And then..!

Nothing. Like usual.

I sight rolled onto my stomach. I folded my arms together and placed my head on them. I stared out the window, seeing Zero near a horse stall. I chuckled to myself and stared at him as he went inside. I pressed my face into my pillow and sighed out. I really don’t want to be here. I don’t want to start all over again. I took a hold of my pillow and shouted into it before rolling over again and staring up at the ceiling. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. I was paranoid. I knew it. I knew I had seen wrong as a child. My mother told me that before she passed away.
