Arna Stayed With Simon (15)

Connor and Arna sit together in one of the windows of the church, trying to be with each other as much as they can before Connor leaves.

"Can I ask you something?" Connor asks her. It's not long before he has to go. She looks up at him, smirking.

"Is it a personal question?" He chuckles, looking down.

"Yes," he says. "It kind of is." She smiles, and he looks back up at her. "I saw part of your file in the DPD that first day we were there." She nods. "It didn't have much. Just basic information. Name, age, what happened to your parents, and a petty theft here and there." He frowns, his LED yellow. "But it still confused me. It had a full name. And said you were twenty-three." She nods again.

"You remember when Hank asked what you knew about me, and you said it was like I had erased everything they had on me?" He nods. "Hank was right. Hadley's a good thief. I learned everything I know from them. They stole the records on my parents and what happened, and over time, we let some stuff slip that made me seem like a human." I chuckle. "Most of it they got from people we worked with like once. Just the details." He nods.

"Impressive." She smiles.

"Says the ex-deviant-hunter to the deviant." He shrugs.

"Well, I wouldn't be much of a deviant hunter now, would I?" She chuckles. "What model are you? You have features I've never seen before. You can feel pain and eat and sleep." She nods. "How?"

"I'm a CT600. The only one in existence," she says. "I was a prototype when I was given to the Ortegas." She smiles fondly. "They treated me like a daughter." She shakes her head. "Anyway, I was a pretty advanced model. I was supposed to be both a caretaker and a friend, but they made me too...human. I can feel pain and eat and sleep, like you said. But being able to experience these things like a human would made it really easy for me to deviate. And when I did...they realized their mistake. They discontinued the line of CT600s they had planned and went back to making androids that couldn't do the things I could." He nods.

"Well," he says, "I think you're perfect like this." Her face flushes blue, and she smiles.

"Ever the charmer," she says, once again. This time, he knows what she means, and he grins. But it drops when Markus walks over. Connor frowns, placing a hand on Arna's, and Markus sighs, not wanting to have to split them up.

"Connor," he says. "It's time." He nods, and Markus walks away. Connor and Arna stand up and make their way to the door of the church. Before he leaves, Connor turns to Arna, taking her hands in his.

"Is it too late to try to convince you not to go again?" she asks with a chuckle, trying to lighten the situation. He smiles sadly.

"I think so." Arna wraps her arms around his waist, and he hugs her tightly.

"Be careful," she says quietly, not trusting her voice. "I don't know what I'll do if you don't come back." Connor pulls away and looks her in the eye.

"I told you I would, didn't I?" She nods. "I'll be back before you know it." He smiles. "Maybe then you can help me understand feelings." She chuckles.

"Humans don't even understand feelings, Connor," she says. "I think you'll do just fine." He nods.

"At least I figured out one thing already." She furrows her brows.

"What's that?" He sighs.

"I love you." Arna freezes, and for a moment Connor is afraid he said something wrong. But then she pulls his face down to hers and crashes her lips onto his. After a few seconds, she pulls away, and Connor doesn't know what to say. His LED spins yellow quickly. Arna sighs.

"I love you, too," she says. He smiles softly and leans down to kiss her again.

Not long after Connor leaves, everyone else does too. Everyone except Simon and Arna, that is. They remain in the church, much to Arna's displeasure. She sits in the same window as before, staring outside, and Simon sits across from her. He sighs.

"Arna," he says. She looks up at him. "He's gonna be okay." He looks out the window. "They all will." She stares at him as he looks back at her. "What happened to you?" He sighs. "When I left you, the police were right around the corner. How did you get away?" She sighs.

"I'm a survivor," she says vaguely. "You know that." Simon groans.

"Don't do that," he says. She looks up at him. "Don't pretend you're fine and that nothing bad happened because I know it did!" She freezes and looks down.

"After you left...things got crazy," she says. "The police caught up with me pretty fast. I fought off a few of them and jumped up onto a fire escape. Figured I could buy myself some time" He nods. "There was an open area halfway up, but I was trying to get to the roof." She sighs. "One of them shot at me, and I fell into the wind room." She looks down at her hands, covered by her gloves. "Got pretty scraped up, but I got away. Covered the wounds so there wouldn't be a trail they could follow. Hid in a storage closet until they left." He nods.

"Sounds pretty similar to something I did," he says. She looks up at him. "Stratford Tower. Got shot, and they had to leave me behind with a gun." Her eyes widen.

"It was you!" His brows furrow.

"What do you mean?" She laughs.

"Stratford Tower!" she says. "I went to the roof to investigate and found a trail of blue blood, but I covered it up before anyone could see it!" His eyes are wide. "It was you!" He smiles.

"You saved my life without even knowing it was me," he says. She nods.

"I'd do it again, too." He lifts a brow.

"Oh, because the bullet in your side wasn't enough?" She laughs.

"To think we were right next to each other and we never knew it." He laughs.

"Why are we the way we are?" She shrugs.

"Because why would we wanna be any different." He chuckles.

"Good point." He looks at her. "On a different note...Connor?" She furrows her brows.

"What about him?" Simon just smirks, and she rolls her eyes. "Okay, you can shut up now." He laughs. "Well, if you can ask me about Connor, I can ask you this. What's going on with you and Markus?" He furrows his brows.

"Markus?" he asks. "What do you mean, 'What's going on with me and Markus?'" She laughs.

"You are so clueless," she says. "Never change, Simon."

"I'm serious!" he exclaims. "What do you mean?" She leans back on the wall behind her.

"You really don't know?" He shakes his head, and she smiles softly. "I see the way you look at him." He just stares at her for a moment before looking away.

"I don't know what you mean." She chuckles quietly.

"You can't try to hide that look," she says. "Not from me." She looks out the window, and Simon looks up at her.

"Is it the same way you look at Connor?" She smiles slightly and nods. "You really love him, don't you?" She sighs and nods again.

"Yeah, I do." He sighs.

"Maybe you're right." She looks up at him, and he shrugs. "Maybe I do look at him like that." He shakes his head. "But it can't happen." She frowns. "With everything that's going on...it just can't. Especially not after North." She looks down.

"Simon," he looks up at her. "You two are perfect for each other." He smiles slightly. "If it's meant to be...it'll happen." He nods.

"Thanks, Arna," he says quietly. She waves him towards her, and he hugs her. She rubs his back comfortingly like she did when he first deviated.

Simon runs up as Markus and the other deviants reach the camp. The dark-skinned deviant leader looks up at his friend.

"I thought you were with Arna," he says. Simon nods.

"Connor came and said he needed her help." Markus nods and looks back at the camp.

"Right," he says. "Let's go."
