Chapter 42 | sensing closure
"You know... I think I know what we should do"
L looked over at you, the silence in the room being broken at last. You sat just across the room, on the sofa behind him where he was watching Mikami over the few cameras that had been left in the house.
"And that is?" He asked.
"Light he... he traumatised us. All this time we've been expecting some big battle like the one on the steps we had with him. But look at Mikami..." you began.
L looked at over at the screen, Mikami was a wreck. He'd almost run out of death note paper and was panicking over it, sitting at his desk anxiously fidgeting as he tried to write as tiny a possible to save space on the page.
"He's going to have a mental breakdown, I know it. That'll be why we goes to the shrine like Morpheus foretold. He's a deeply religious person... if you can even call Kira a religion. He's going to probably try and seek forgiveness or beg for another chance. He probably views loosing the death note like he's been judged unworthy or something" you continued.
"You're probably right... he's almost in a state of religious delusion I'd say..." L replied.
"I'd say so too. So why don't we use this to our advantage? Why don't we just skip all the mortal world law stuff and... take him to the underworld? Not kill him, but bring him down there still alive to see the man he worships for himself"
L caught on to what you were getting at here. To someone like Mikami, someone so lost in a state of blind worship, seeing that he was wrong... that he was no better than the criminals he prosecuted. That would he be his punishment. Taking him to see Light Yagami for himself, in the beaten, pathetic, defeated state he was in down in Tartarus... that would break him.
"So... you think we should present ourselves to him as kami, take him to the underworld to see Light and let his own twisted mind do the rest?" L asked.
"Yep. It's clear that he's not capable of putting up a physical fight like Light was, we've been so worried for... for nothing. Light hurt us so badly we were on edge waiting for a physical attack this whole time. One that just won't come..." you replied.
L pondered a moment, ultimately realising you were right. He glanced back over at the screen again, watching for a moment as Mikami tapped his pen anxiously staring down at the page before him, almost full. He was on the brink of insanity, but not the stabbing everyone kind. The begging 'god' for forgiveness kind. Even Shidoh seemed to sense it, as he simply say back in the room and watched. No snarky remarks, no obnoxiously eating all Miakamis food. Simply watching, waiting. All this time, you and L had been so scared Mikami would pull a Light and try to knock you out or something... but that just wasn't happening. He was too weakened in the mind to even consider that.
"Yeah... yeah maybe you're right. When he goes to the shrine we can use that. Make him realise the kami are real, that Kira isn't one of us, that he's been killing fit no reason, making him just as bad as the people he claims to hate" L muttered.
"And hey, we aren't killing him. We're just... taking him into the underworld for a permanent vacation. His body will eventually die down there, naturally. But it won't be blood on our hands" you replied.
"All this time I was terrified for the kids lives, for our safety... but really... he's not much of a threat is he? Not without the death note or his precious Kira"
"Exactly"
Don't get anything wrong here, it was still a good thing that the successors were immune to death via old age, sickness or the death note now. It meant they could stay your family forever. But after all that, Mikami wasn't even that big of a deal. It seemed anticlimactic, that there'd be no final battle and you'd been so scared for nothing. But it was also oddly ironic and poetic. The person who tried to gain the glory and favour of 'god', falling from grace in the most bland way possible. Being picked up by the gods and into the underworld just like every other mortal would eventually end up. The good thing about it though was the mental punishment for his crimes he'd experience from having his whole worldview shattered. Kira? Kira didn't exist. There was no Kira. No god of the new world and his decibels. Just a sad, death, pathetic man with a god complex down in the underworld and his equally as sad and pathetic follower who soon would have his entire identity as a follower of Kira and lawyer called into question.
"You're right... you always are" L sighed, getting up and walking over to you.
He sat on the couch beside you, leaning his head against your shoulder and allowing your arm to wrap around him and give him a gentle squeeze.
"I should be the god of always right" you teased.
"You should be. Deity of love and being correct, (y/n) Lawliet" he said, placing a kiss on your cheek.
"All of this seems so anticlimactic after everything we've done and been through, but it's just how things work out I guess. The fates work in mysterious ways"
You returned the kiss with one on his forehead, thinking about everything that had happened. All the pain you and L had been put through over these years of Kira cases.
"I hate Light... if it weren't for him, none of this would have happened. He hurt us more than I think I realised" L sighed.
"He has... we have eternity to get over it though. All this tenseness and panic over some big, dangerous, life threatening final battle... only for it to never come. I mean, don't get me wrong I'd rather not have a major battle. But it feels so... anticlimactic" you replied.
"That trauma I guess, being convinced the past will come back to haunt you. Even if it's so clear it won't"
You knew what you had to do now, you just needed to wait for the moment Mikami finally realises how out of luck he is, and starts to make that desperate pilgrimage to the shrine to beg for forgiveness. Only for you and L to tell him, there will be none. Because the person he worships is dead, and was never a god to begin with.
There is no Kira, and he'd find that out the hard way.
