Submission #22
Alright, I haven't answered any questions since this magazine hit 1,000 reads back last month, and we finally got a submission! And this one's lengthy.
This submission comes from Kaitlin_W1212 and she asks:
Hi! I was wondering if you could give me some advice: I have a speech coming up for my public speaking class in college and I'm super nervous. My last one which was about something I loved and took away personality traits from (I picked the song here comes the sun btw.) and I think I didn't go great on it, even though I had good speaking pace. I am absolutely terrified of speaking in front of people. I don't know what to do to calm myself down. And another piece of advice I ask is, what should I do about my suitemates? They never shut up, especially during the night. I have an 8 am class tomorrow. College is great, otherwise. I have been woken up by them 4 times, and it's getting insanely annoying. I'm going to tell my RA if it happens again, but I don't want them to get mad. Sorry I bothered you, and I hope that you have a wonderful day/night.
No, you didn't bother me at all darling. I love answering questions for everyone. And it's awesome that you chose a song I wrote for your last speech. Awesome that you're having a great time at college, my editor is in college too.
Anyway, with remaining calm during a speech is that a few hours before you go to bed, recite it in front of a mirror, if you can do it in front of yourself without getting nervous, then you can at least do it in front of your class.
The morning of your speech, wake up an hour before you usually wake up, and just meditate. Meditation helps clear the mind and lets go of all the nervousness you have.
Also, you'll want to be fully prepared. Being prepared for the speech will make you more confident which will make you less nervous.
Lastly, don't overthink about it. If you overthink about it, you'll be more nervous. I hate public speaking too and it drives me nuts when I would overthink it.
As for your suite mates never shutting up, I would try to talk to them about it and if you can, set up some rules about. When the boys and I would tour, we had to do that and it made us not want to kill each other.
If that doesn't work, I would try to buy mouse canceling headphones. It works like a charm.
Hope that answered your question! Have a good day/night too!
