Chapter 7
"So... Shape shifter huh?" Lily said whilst trying to break the silence.
They were now on an old abandoned road on their way to their family farmhouse. She was driving, which was probably a bad idea because she was freaking out internally. They'd left immediately after the other twin... Michael, she'd have to start referring to him as Michael... had near passed out and Mic had said something about a shape shifter coming after them. She had volunteered to drive ( odd ) them to her family's farmhouse where they should be safe. She seemed to be making a lot of weird decisions tonight. She hoped she could at least get some answers.
"After you left the library I stayed behind for a while. When I was about to leave I got attacked by this red haired guy. When he grabbed me I just felt my energy drain away and before I passed out I saw him turn into me." Mic said in response.
"And you think he's with that evil doctor?" Lily asked.
"Yes." Mic replied.
"I'd think you were crazy if I hadn't just seen your brother Houdini those guys." She said.
He was riding short gun whilst his twin was sleeping in the back of the Mercedes. He would constantly check on him using the rear view mirror. Watching him, Lily felt it was time to address the elephant in the room.
"Hey Mic," she began.
He turned to face her with a raised eyebrow.
"Did you - did you know he could do that?" She asked.
She watched him furrow his brow as he shook his head.
"I can't help but feel like part of me did." He said in a low voice.
She could tell he was telling the truth so she decided not to push it further. She simply concentrated on the road. There was still a long journey ahead of them and she hoped they'd make it without incident. She would worry about what to tell her parents later.
Mic simply sat there in silence. His eyes would occasionally find their way to the rearview mirror where he would watch the sleeping figure on the back. There were so many questions in his mind. Lily's question still rang in his head. It didn't make sense. If his twin had psionic abilities shouldn't he have known? Because he was pretty sure that's why those people had taken him away and lied about him being dead. They had found out about him. But wouldn't he have been the first to know? He sighed out loud. Well, for now he had to take one problem at a time.
They didn't make it to the farm until 3 a.m. which was good because it was still dark and people were still asleep. When they made it to the large steel gates, Lily rang the intercom.
"Hey, Josh, open up. It's Lily." She said.
Immediately the gates opened and they drove into the farm.
"How many people are there here exactly?" Mic asked in concern.
The last thing he needed was these people talking.
"Don't worry, it's just Josh. He's our caretaker." Lily replied. "He won't say a thing to anyone, especially my parents. You have my word."
That didn't reassure him at all. They made their way to the garage where a blond muscular guy in faded denim jeans, a white shirt and cowboy boots was already waiting for them.
"Josh." Lily said in greeting.
"Howdy, ma'am. A pleasant surprise to have you here at such an ungodly hour." Josh said to her with a smile.
"You do know nobody actually talks like that, right?" Lily said to him with a chuckle.
"Sure but the ladies love it." He said with a smirk. "On a serious note though, couldn't you have waited till the sun came up like normal people?"
"Not really. My friends and I needed to get away from all the pressure at school. So here we are." She said to him with a goofy grin. "Just don't tell mom and dad okay? They don't know I'm here. I'll talk to them in the morning. In fact, don't tell anyone at all about us. We just want to keep it low profile."
"Uhm, should I be worried?" Josh asked in concern.
"No. I promise you we have done nothing wrong." She said reassuringly.
"Well if you say so." He said as he hands her a bunch of keys. "I'm sure you kids can make your way inside. I'm about ready to jump back into dreamland. See you when the sun comes up."
She watched as he walked away. When he was gone, she turned back to the car.
"Come on. I'll get the door." She said to Mic.
Mic got out of the car and made his way to the back. Gently, he shook his brother awake. He slowly opened his eyes. Mic could tell he was very tired and still very weak.
"Hey, can you walk?" He asked in concern.
Michael gave a slow nod of his head. Slowly he got up, with help from his twin. The two boys immediately made their way inside with Mic helping his twin to stay on his feet. Lily showed them to their room. It had two separate beds, one she explained was reserved for guests. She soon proceeded to bring them some medication which she figured Michael still needed. This time it was just some pills which Mic immediately gave to his twin.
"Will you two be alright?" She asked Mic after they'd put his brother to bed.
"Yes." He replied. "Thank you, for all this."
"Don't worry about it. I'm glad I could help." She replied. "You should get some sleep too, you know. You've been worried all night I can literally see the grey hairs start to grow on your head."
"I'll be fine." He said with a laugh. "See you when the sun comes up."
With a smile and a wave, she left for her own room.
