Emma was sitting at Starbucks, waiting for Jeff. She had already ordered a couple of drinks. She was hoping for Jeff to show up before their order was ready. She was just about to text him when she saw him walk in through the front door.
"Finally," she said as he approached the table.
"Tit for tat," he smiled, pulling up a chair.
Emma rolled her eyes.
"So, how did you alibi hunting go?" Jeff adjusted his chair.
"Stacey and Trevor both have solid alibis. Roberto says he doesn't have one. And we don't even know who the mystery girl is," said Emma.
"Did you even try to ask Roberto about the mystery girl?" asked Jeff.
"I don't think he knows who she is either," Emma shrugged.
"We need to find her. She's crucial to the investigation," said Jeff.
"Jeff, is there anything you're not telling me?" asked Emma, her heart pounding against her ribcage.
"I don't know, I just have this feeling," Jeff mused. "We really need to find her. I'll go talk to Roberto. If she was a new buyer, Roberto might have some info on her."
"You can trust me, Jeff. What do you know about the mystery girl?" asked Emma.
"Well, I don't know who she is, but I've seen her. I saw her kill Max," said Jeff.
"That's how you knew he was murdered?" asked Emma.
"Yes. I was there. I was following Max because I was scared that he might sell me out to the police about the whole drug business."
"He didn't get suspicious?" asked Emma.
"No, I kept my distance and as soon as he turned right on Short Hound road I knew where he was going. I slowed down even more. I parked my car half a mile away. He was just standing there at the construction site. It looked like he was waiting for someone. And then I saw her come. The mystery girl, I'm sure. She came and they sat for a while, getting high and whatnot. Then he took out his gun and she just took it from him and shot him," explained Jeff.
"What did she look like?" asked Emma.
"I was too far away to really take in her features. Her hair was brown, kinda like yours. But it was much shorter, shoulder length. She was shorter than Max, but not too short. Wearing black clothes. That's all I can tell."
"That's good," Emma nodded.
"So yeah, we need to talk to Roberto and find out who she was," said Jeff. "He's the only person that might have a clue."
"Why didn't you call the cops?" asked Emma.
"I didn't really want to interact with the police. They'd ask questions about why I was there and all. You know," replied Jeff.
"So you knew he was dead?" asked Emma.
"Yeah, as soon as she killed him and left, I went to him and checked. He was dead. I couldn't do anything. So I left," explained Jeff.
"Hopefully you didn't get any blood on your car," Emma laughed.
"On the steering wheel from my hands. But I scrubbed it off with bleach, just in case," Jeff laughed.
"Yeah, I get it," laughed Emma.
"So Roberto tomorrow," said Jeff.
"Yeah," replied Emma. Her mind was in a whirl.
