Chapter 1: You Should Eat Less/ More

The pronouns for Kyoka frequently change throughout this chapter and the story. I hope it's not too confusing. If you know of any way I could improve when it comes to writing with two sets of pronouns for one person, please inform me.

Kyoka was getting tired of this. Of sitting by and watching as the men around her salivated over heroes who just so happened to be women. She was getting a bit fed up with having to scold the men around her as they exclaimed about their adoration for Mt Lady's curves or expressed their need for Midnight to do all manner of things to them. Kyoka wasn't an idiot, they knew when women used their sexuality to enhance their popularity and audience; it was fairly obvious in the cases of Mt Lady and Midnight. But, why should they have to? The question kept Kyoka up at night sometimes. Men didn't have to dress scantily and flaunt their bodies just so that people would look their way when they did a heroic deed, and that was because they were taken seriously.

Kyoka was well aware that they could never pull off the things that some of the women they knew did, they simply didn't have the body for it, and even if they did, they doubted they would flaunt themself. She respected people like Midnight and Mt Lady for doing what they did, it was admirable really, being able to push off all of the objectifying comments. Kyoka feared, however, that her friends would face those same comments when they graduated. They could appreciate a pretty woman as well as the next bisexual disaster, but some men simply took it too far. Way too far.

Sighing heavily to herself, Kyoka rolled over in bed and stared at the alarm clock, 7:03 am flashed back at her in blocky red numbers. There were only two minutes left until the alarm would sound off and they would be forced out of bed so that they could prepare for another day at UA. Kyoka truly did love learning to be a hero, but she sometimes wondered if it was worth going through all of this pain just to be ridiculed for her efforts.

"Kyoka!" Mina called out to her purple-haired friend, waving at them frantically to try and earn their attention. Mina didn't really have to wave as enthusiastically as she was to get Kyoka to notice her, her voice carried over the morning rush of teenagers getting ready.

"Hey, Mina, what's up?" Kyoka smiled kindly at their close friend, taking a seat by her side and tucking into the three pieces of toast that Mina had set in front of them.

"Nothing. I just wanted you to sit next to me today, when the other girls come down, I'll call them over too. We can have a girl's breakfast!" Mina was always enthusiastic, never letting anything put a damper on her perpetual chipper mood. It was something that Kyoka admired about her. Kyoka herself was prone to falling into what could be considered a disgruntled mood from time to time. Unlike her friends, Kyoka's resting face wasn't a pleasant smile or simply a straight face, but a scowl.

"Woah, that's quite a bit of food, Jiro. Are you sure you want to eat all of that?" Kyoka had been in a good mood when she had sat next to Mina, but hearing the lispy drone of the class pervert brought a scowl to their lips faster than one would anticipate.

"It's none of your business what I eat, Mineta! Fuck off!" Kyoka scowled, cursing at the ball headed boy.

"Sheesh. Chill! I was just saying. You wouldn't want to get fat, would you?" Mineta returned Kyoka's scowl and swaggered off. He walked like he had achieved something as if he had delivered a crushing truth. Well... He had achieved something. Kyoka was no longer ravenous, just the sight of the buttered toast in front of her stirred unconscious fears and doubts that they thought they had buried long before.

"Don't listen to that asshole, Kyoka. You couldn't get fat if you tried, we're always exercising! Not that it would matter if you did get a little plumper, you'd still be just as breathtakingly beautiful!" That was another thing Kyoka liked about Mina, her ability to cheer everyone up and discredit some of the horrible statements that were thrown around so casually.

"Yeah. I know. Oh, look, the rest of the girls have come down." Kyoka was quick to divert the attention away from her. It was ever so slightly nerve-wracking to have someone so focused on making her happy.

The girls chatted about inconsequential things all throughout breakfast; the dreams they had the previous night, who they think could burp the loudest out of all of them, a new musical act, the new restaurant down the street from the school and several other topics. Kyoka immersed herself in the conversation, trying to forget the meaningless words of one of her classmates, but she ended up only eating one and a half pieces of toast, despite the fact that her stomach was groaning out for more.

Classes at UA weren't easy, but what else could you expect? Being a hero wasn't just about how well you could control your quirk, but also about resourcefulness and wit. Maybe 7th in the class, when it came to academic rankings, wasn't the best, but it was certainly quite good. Better than the vast majority of boys in her class.

"And that's the end of our English lesson today. You all did amazing, Little Listeners!" Present Mic cheered enthusiastically, "Good job, keep up the good work!" he said in English. Kyoka watched as some of the students in the class who were less proficient at the language struggled to decipher the meaning of the words, not that it really mattered, the lesson was finished. And with the end of the lesson came the blessed time allotted for the students to have lunch.

"Jiro! Are you going to sit with us today?" Kaminari asked, leaning across the gap between the tables to lean on Kyoka's desk and smile up at them. As much as Kaminari had initially annoyed them at the beginning of their first year, Kyoka really did enjoy his company. He was a source of laughter for her and he always knew how to cheer them up, but in a unique way that was unlike Mina.

"Sure. I think Momo is helping out Ectoplasm and Thirteen today anyway, she's helping to plan something." Kyoka packed her bag and stowed it under her desk safely, she would only be returning to the same classroom after lunch anyway, there was no need to carry it around the school with her.

"Awesome. Come on, everyone else has already run off!" Kaminari jumped up from his desk and ran from the room, an action that would have earned him admonishment from Iida had he been there.

Kyoka sighed to themself and tucked the boy's chair in for him before following after him at a much slower pace.

"How did you find that English lesson? It's one of your better subjects, right?" Kyoka hummed to her companion as they cruised down the hallway and towards the bustling activity of the lunchroom.

"Ha. You mean my only good subject! I found the lesson pretty easy, but hero ethics and laws class is going to make up for that later. I understand why we need to take it, but I'm really shit at it. I barely passed my last test." Kyoka wasn't going to lie to her friend, she wasn't the kind of person to do so, but she wanted to at least alleviate some of the dejection that had worked its way into is expression.

"Hey, don't talk like that! Everyone fails in some area, I'm absolutely shit at Japanese Literature, you know that. You wouldn't have gotten into UA if you weren't smart enough, sure, in the face of people like Iida and Yaomomo, you might seem a bit... not as smart, but that's not your fault." Kyoka soothed.

Kaminari's face lit up and he smiled thankfully at his friend, "You're right! Thanks, Kyoka."

"Anytime."

They'd arrived at the lunchroom by this point, the noisy clamour putting their conversation to rest. Maybe Kyoka wasn't as naturally sweet as Ochako or as reassuring as Mina, but knowing they could cheer their friend up made all of that insignificant. It seemed as though the bad start to their day wouldn't affect the rest of their waking hours.

"Hey, Kami! Over here!" Kirishima called out from the opposite end of the lunch hall. Kyoka and Kaminari had just collected their lunch from Lunch Rush and they had been looking for their friends amongst the bustling bodies of the numerous students in the room. Upon hearing Kirishima call out to them, both second years smiled and immediately started heading in that direction.

"Eijiro!" Kaminari shouted enthusiastically as he fell into the seat beside his friend and threw an arm around his neck as if he hadn't seen him a few minutes prior.

"Shut up and sit down properly!" Bakugo snarled, vocalizing exactly what had been on Kyoka's mind. Kyoka took a seat between the fiery pomeranian of Class 2A and the enthusiastic self-proclaimed alien.

"How are you doing, Kyoka? Did you find that English lesson hard, it was a drag! What did he even say at the end?" Mina bemoaned, throwing herself dramatically into Kyoka's side.

"He said 'Good job. Keep up the good work'. It wasn't really anything important." Kyoka hummed.

"Oh. Well, I was worrying about nothing. I thought he had said something similar to that, but I got confused. Oh well. Hey, do you wanna have a film night tonight? I can invite everyone in the class! It is the weekend, after all, and we don't need to go to bed really early. What do you say?" Mina rambled on, Kyoka liked that about their friend, she carried most of the conversations, which left Kyoka happily listening along.

"Sounds good to me," Kyoka affirmed once she had swallowed the food in her mouth.

"Awesome! How about you guys?" Mina asked, whipping around to stare at the four boys seated around the table.

"Sounds cool."

"Sure."

"Fine."

"Awesome!"

Conversation after that varied from one topic to another, it was always like that when Kyoka sat with the 'Bakusquad'. One minute they could be talking about their weekend plans, and the next Sero will be ranting about how his tortoise named Larry that he had to leave at home had apparently eaten some of his dad's prized cabbages and now he had to ask Aizawa if he could bring his tortoise to school because his parents wanted to get rid of him. As chaotic as conversations with the group were, Kyoka found solace in them.

"And then, because he's an asshole, he told Kyoka that they shouldn't eat three pieces of toast because they might get fat! What's the point!" Mina ranted as she glared at Mineta across the cafeteria with venom.

"That's messed up. I don't know how he's still in the class, he's pushing too many boundaries." Kirishima sighed. There were mumbles of agreement from around the table, though Kyoka noticed that Kaminari got a thoughtful look on his face.

Kaminari was Kyoka's dear friend, she loved him like she loved all of her friends, but he was prone to saying things without thinking about the meaning of said words. He had gotten into trouble with various people over their first year in UA because he didn't think properly before he spoke. Kyoka knew when to anticipate his idiotic words, but this time she was too slow to stop him.

"But..." Kaminari began. When he started his sentence like that, with a drawn-out word, everyone knew what was about to happen, and whilst Sero shot his hand forward to try and stop him and Bakugo glared at him, Kaminari still continued to speak.

"Shouldn't she be careful of what she eats? Nobody wants to gain weight, right? Plus, we're heroes in training and we need to be careful that we don't get out of shape because then we won't be able to do our jobs properly." Kyoka really did love Kaminari, but sometimes he was an idiot.

There was silence at the table for a solid minute, a silence that seemed to baffle Kaminari before Kyoka finally spoke up.

"Kaminari, I know you're not trying to be, but that comes off really misogynistic." Kyoka sighed.

"Yeah, dude, I don't think you quite grasp what happened. Jiro can eat whatever she wants, she's just going to work off the calories later in the day anyway, right? Plus eating a big breakfast makes them less likely to pass out when we do physical training later in the day. Not to mention that we shouldn't be commenting on what Jiro eats or their weight, it's not any of our business. Mineta was just being an asshole."  Eijiro explained to his friend.

Comprehension dawned in Kaminari's expression. "I'm so sorry, Jiro. Shit, I must have sounded horrible!" Kaminari apologised

"Yeah. You did sound horrible." Bakugo grumbled.

"It's ok, just think things through before you speak." Kyoka dismissed. They smiled as the conversation around the table returned to various obscure topics, though the smile was strained. Hearing, essentially, the same thing for the second time that day stirred discomfort in her chest. Despite still being hungry, Kyoka only ate 3/4 of their meal.

Just like that morning's classes, Hero's Ethics and Laws was a breeze for Kyoka, they were simply reviewing things that they had learned the previous year in preparation for a larger project the next week. It was due to the ease of the class that Kyoka spaced out and didn't notice that the lesson had ended until Momo was tapping on her shoulder.

"Kyoka. It's the end of the day. Are you tired? When we get back to the dorms, you can have a nap." Momo hummed gently. Kyoka shook her head to try and wake herself up before she replied to the girl who towered over her in height.

"Yeah. I'll probably have a little nap. Mina is planning on having a film night tonight and I don't want to miss it. What did you get up to at lunchtime?" Kyoka rubbed the sleep from their eyes and swung their bag over their shoulder. Momo followed their lead as they started walking towards the classroom door.

"I helped Ectoplasm and Thirteen Sensei with some plans for the first years. I'm thinking about offering a tutoring service to the younger students, I enjoyed aiding our friends last year. Ectoplasm supports my idea and even offered to give me a room to offer the sessions so that I didn't need to look for one every week. Do you think it's a good idea?" Momo asked nervously.

"Mhm. You're a great teacher and inspiration, I think both you and the first years would benefit from you tutoring them." Kyoka stated in an assuring tone.

"Really? Thanks, Kyoka. You always know what to say to cheer me up and reassure me!" Momo pulled her best friend into a side hug as they walked, invoking a blazing red to appear across Kyoka's cheeks.

"No need to thank me!" Kyoka quickly asserted, "I'm just telling the truth."

The two girls quickly arrived at the dorms where they parted ways, Kyoka going to her room and Momo walking over to Midoriya and Iida to spark up a conversation about their latest lessons.

As soon as Kyoka had shed their blazer and dropped their bag beside their desk, they face-planted onto the bed and fell into a light slumber, only barely remembering to set an alarm so that they would have time to wake up and get dressed before Iida made the rounds and called people to dinner.

Dinner in Heights' Alliance was always an exciting affair, what with twenty teenagers all clamouring to talk to their friends and share a social meal with their classmates. Some people were quieter than others, but they generally still enjoyed the time spent with their classmates. On this particular evening, the food being served was inspired by the west, so the class was happily sharing a pizza between them whilst Mina stood at the front of the class with Ochako and Denki, reading out the options for the films they could watch.

"We've got the classic Disney films like Mulan and Beauty and The Beast. Though Todoroki brought in Moana, today, so we can watch that if we want. If any of you want to watch something a bit more mature, we have The Purge-" Mina started, but was cut off by Sero.

"I'm on board for Disney films, but if we're going to watch a horror film, can it be in Japanese. I can't keep up with the action if I have to keep reading subtitles! We can watch something like... Homunculus! Can we watch Homonculous and watch one of the Disney films?" Sero suggested.

"Ok. We'll put it to a vote! Hands up for Sero's plan. Keep your hands down if you don't mind watching a western horror film." Ochako instructed.

"Do we have to watch a horror film at all?" Ojiro questioned, "Can't we just watch a nice action film, I'll even accept a rom-com?"

"OK. We can either choose between Ojiro's plan or Sero's plan." Denki announced. "So who wants to go with Ojiro's plan?"

Several hands were raised into the air, hands such as Ojiro, Toru, Iida and Koda's. It was clear to see who's idea was going to get the majority vote.

"OK, I don't think I even need to ask about Sero's plan. We'll decide on the Disney film after Homunculus had finished! Ochako! Play the film!" Mina announced grandly.

Ochako quickly scrolled through the films on the TV before coming to a stop on the correct one and clicking on it. The lights were turned off and everyone settled down, ready to get creeped out by the happenings of the film.

The film had only been playing for fifteen minutes when Kyoka felt someone nudge her, she looked behind her and smiled as she was greeted with Midoriya's gentle face.

"Hey, Midoriya, did you need something?" Kyoka whispered.

"I noticed that you haven't eaten anything and that you didn't finish your breakfast this morning. You should eat more food, you don't want to get too slim otherwise you won't be able to train properly." Midoriya's voice was nearly silent, but Mineta was still close enough to hear.

"Plus, nobody wants to date a girl who doesn't have any figure! You should eat more so that you actually develop some tits and an ass." Mineta was by no means as quiet as MIdoriya, causing a few heads to turn in their direction, but nothing was said by anybody who may have heard.

"N-now that's not what I meant! I just thought that it would be healthy for Jiro to eat full meals so that they can be the best hero they can possibly be!" Midoriya stuttered nervously.

Kyoka didn't give Mineta the chance to rebuttal what Midoriya had said, they quickly inserted themself into the conversation. "Shut the fuck up Mineta! Pick one, am I too fat or too skinny. Should I eat more or eat less? You can't have it both ways you asshole! Not that it matters to you! News flash, you bastard, this is my body and it has nothing to do with you. You'd be lucky if a woman let you get anywhere close to her, so I don't know what concern it is of yours on my eating habits! Since you're allowed to say what I'm allowed to eat then I should be able to do the same to you. So, here's a suggestion, why don't you go and swallow some arsenic, hopefully, you'll choke and die!" Kyoka didn't even attempt to restrain their anger or the volume of their voice. She spat her scathing comments at Mineta and slapped him for good measure before storming off.

"Tch, what's got her so pissy?" she heard Mineta mutter under his breath as she stormed away. He was lucky she didn't swing back around and deck him in the face for that comment alone.

It was fair to say that film night was ruined that night. It was a matter of opinion when it came to who was to blame for the night coming to such an abrupt end.

Thank you for reading the first chapter of this book.

I know, generally what direction I want to take when it comes to this story, but it might take a while to get into the full swing of things. I would like to say some things though.

This book, as you will see with the chapter titles, is a book focused mainly on the things men (and sometimes other women) say or do to women, whether intentional or not, and how they can affect women, or how they can affect a woman's thought process. Of course, a majority of these things can happen to any gender, but primarily, these things happen to women or people who look like women.

I'd like to think of myself as a feminist (not one of those exclusionary ones who exclude transgender women or look down on men, we're all equal), and it really grinds my gears when people simply dismiss women because 'they're too emotional' or some other bullshit. This book is my way of expressing my frustration. I understand if some people may not like the premise or idea of this book, but that's really none of my business.

On another note, seeing as this book will be talking about issues that women may face, it will be touching upon stuff such as discrimination, sexual harassment and other heavier topics. I will be putting warning when I think they're necessary.

Anyway, enough of me rambling, thank you for reading, happy pride month, and I hope you have a wonderful day wherever you are.
