"Well I can't do nothin' with the blues I got
But sing, sing, sing
I guess the only thing to keep me from-a blowing my top
Is to sing, sing, sing" Johnny O'Keefe sang on the tv set. George had turned the tv on while I was making tea in the kitchen. I raced to the tv and turned the volume up. "I'm gonna sing a little song that has a rockin' beat
I'm gonna sing (sing) sing (sing) si-i-ing" George and I both sung at the top of our lungs. George made me forget about what happened with Stevie earlier that evening. We ended up having pizza for dinner and watching Sing, Sing, Sing. Tonight, Johnny was having a singing competition. Most of the contestants were teenagers and were extremely talented. A girl from Melbourne named Olivia Newton-John won. She had an amazing voice. "I think she'll be famous one day" George said as he got up to turn the tv off. I nodded in agreement and yawned. "I think it's time for bed" I said as I got up. "Well I guess I better be going then" George said as he gave me a hug. "Would you like to go out tomorrow night? Not a date, as friends" George said. "I would love too" I smiled. "Ok good. I'll pick you up around 5:30" he said. I smiled and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "See you then."
12 July 1964
The phone had been ringing all day. My guess is that it was Stevie calling to apologise to me but I was not in the mood to talk to him. I was going out to Sydney tonight with George in a couple of minutes and I wasn't gonna let anything ruin it. The phone rang again for 100th time and I stared at it. Maybe I should answer it. I might as well. I put my hand on the phone but quickly pulled it back. No. Don't answer it silly. If Stevie was really sorry he would come here and tell me face to face. Just at that moment I herd the doorbell rang. I opened and saw George and Harry standing on the steps. "Hello. I hope you don't mind but Harry wanted to come along tonight" George said. "Of course I don't mind" I smiled at Harry. We all hoped into the car and drove to Sydney.
We finally arrived at Sydney. We all jumped out of the car and started walking towards a line of people waiting to get into the club. I looked up and read the sign. "Surf City? I thought we would be going to Suzie Wong's" I said confused. "I thought you'd rather go to the hottest club in town then go where Stevie hangs out all the time" George said. "Can you please not mention Stevie" I snapped. We stood there in an awkward silence for what seemed like an eternity. "I'm sorry for snapping at you" I said quietly. "That's alright. I understand" George smiled. "Anyway, I know you will love the band that's preforming tonight" Harry said as we walked in. "Who's ..." I froze.
"She comes on like a rose
And everybody knows
She'll get you in dutch
You can look
But you better not touch
Poison ivy poison ivy"
I looked up to the stage and saw Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs playing. I nearly fainted. I had seen them on tv with hundreds of girls going crazy or him. "I thought he'd had stop playing at clubs" I said to Harry. "Me too" Harry said as we all sat down at the table.
After they finished playing Poison Ivy they started playing Over The Rainbow, one of my favourite songs. I still remember my mother singing it to me when I was sick. I couldn't take my eyes off Billy as he was singing. Halfway through the song he noticed me and winked. I quickly turned away, trying to hide my red cheeks. "You know what? I think Sheila is falling for Billy Thorpe" Harry smirked. "Shut up" I said as I nudged him. He started laughing and teasing me. George on the other hand just smiled. "Well that's it for tonight folks. Hope you enjoyed it and thank you coming" Billy said into the microphone. I clapped and cheered as I watched him walk off stage and towards the bar. I still couldn't take my eyes off him. "What are you doing here?" I herd George say. I herd him but I didn't really take notice until I herd the other person answer. "I came to talk to Sheila." I turned around and saw Stevie. Great. "I tried calling you but you didn't answer" Stevie said, looking into my eyes with his sad ones. "Of course I didn't answer. If you actually mean it you would come to my house and tell me in person" I said as I got up. "Wait! Sheila, can you please forgive me?" He begged. "I'm not falling for that trick again" I said as I turned around and started to walk away. "Sheila!" Stevie called after me. I turned my head around but I forgot to stop walking and I crashed into someone spilling their drinks all over them. "Oh I'm so sorry. I wasn't watching where I was going" I apologised. "That's alright cutie" I herd the man say in a slight British accent. I looked up and saw it was Billy Thorpe. My cheeks instantly turned bright red. "My name is Billy Thorpe" he said as he took my hand and kissed it. "I'm... I'm Sheila Sutcliffe" I smiled nervously. "Nice to meet you Sheila" he smiled. We stood there for what felt like an eternity just looking into each other's eyes. "May I take you home?" Billy asked, breaking the silence. "Actually she's with me" Stevie said as he walked up to us with George and Harry trailing behind. Ugh thanks for ruining the moment Stevie. "Are you serious? We are through Stevie. I gave you a second chance and you blew it" I said with anger. I turned back to Billy. "I'm sorry about him. I would love for you to take me home" I smirked. I looked over to George and Harry and got their nod of approval. Billy took my hand and we walked out of the club.
4 December 1964
It's been a couple of months since I last saw Stevie. Since then I've joined a hot rod gang and go to all the car shows. My deuce coupe was voted the best hot rod at the car show just last week. I still keep in contact with George, Harry, Dick and Snowy separately. I haven't seen them preform since the talent quest. Snowy told me they've changed their name from The Starfighters to The Easybeats and they got regular gigs at a club called Beatle Village. He said it reminded him of the Cavern Club back in Liverpool. Tonight I'm going to see them preform. I was excited but nervous. Excited because I miss watching them preform and nervous cause I'm going to have to face Stevie again. *knock knock* "Honey, Billy's here" Mum said as she peeked in. "Ok. I'll be out in a minute" I said. I haven't told you what happened between me and Billy have I? Well nothing happened. Some flirting but that's it. We are just friends but I love that because I've had enough boy drama to almost put me off from dating. I walked out of my room and greeted Billy and we were on our way.
"I'm so nervous" I said as we pulled up near the club. "Don't worry. Everything will be fine" Billy said as he gave me a hug. We jumped out of the car and walked into Beatle Village. Yep Snowy's right. Just as dark and cramped as the Cavern Club. I looked over to the small stage and saw the boys. Harry noticed me and waved. "I-I want to you for my woman, I-I wanna be your man" Stevie sung into the microphone while looking at all the girls that were reaching out for him. "Well he certainly looks like he's enjoying himself" I mumbled. "What did you say?" Billy asked. "Oh nothing" I smiled. I turned away and continued watching the boys. This song isn't that bad. I wonder who wrote it. I was brought out of my thoughts when everyone started to applaud as they walked off stage. Harry ran up and gave me the biggest hug. "How are you Sheila?" Harry said as he let go of me. "I'm alright" I answered. He shook hand with Billy and started talking to him as the George, Snowy and Dick walked up. "Hello guys" George said. "G'day George" Billy said as he shook his hand. Another man walked up and smiled at me. "You must be the famous Sheila Sutcliffe I always hear about. My name is Mike Vaughan. I'm the boys manager" Mike said as he offered his hand. "Yes that's me. It's nice to meet you Mike" I said as I shook his hand. I felt a tap on my shoulder and I turned around to see Stevie. "Hey Sheila" Stevie said nervously. "Hi" I said quietly. "I just wanted to say I'm sorry for what I done. I know you probably don't want to get back with me and I understand. I broke your heart twice. I just... can we please at least still be friends. I miss having you in my life Sheila" Stevie nervously. I smiled. "Of course we can be friends" I said as I gave him a hug. I missed having him in my life too. Who knows maybe one day we'll start dating again.
