35 Ghoul Studies

Saturday went fairly quick after the events of Friday night. Y/N and Hermione, once she had got back from chatting with Lavender, were closer than ever before given the events of the previous day.

Their Professors from Muggle Studies and Astronomy had sent them what they needed to catch up, which wasn't much given it was their first lesson. By dinner time they had caught up just about everything for their two days worth of classes- given they had also completed their first assignments for each class they were actually ahead.

Sunday morning Hermione had slept in, and Y/N had gone and worked out by himself, before heading down to breakfast. Hermione and Lavender finally appeared at about 9:30, both looked tired.

"You two ok?" Y/N laughed at the girls.

"Yeah just late night gossiping, mostly about you big boy" Lav said with a chuckle causing Hermione to wide eye her and Y/N to blush, ever so slightly.

They hung out for an hour in the great hall before it was time for Y/N to go to his Ghoul Studies class. He kissed Hermione goodbye and went to the classroom Dumbledore had told him to. Y/N blew a large amount of dust off the sign on the door, revealing 'Ghoul Studies' in a medieval gothic script. He figured the class hadn't been used in a while.

Y/N knocked on the door and heard "Enter" from inside.

He walked in the class to be greeted by a man about 6'4", so just a couple of inches taller than himself, but with a muscular physique similar to Y/N's.

There weren't many wizards who had physiques like that, given manual labour was seen as below them by a lot of wizards, so Y/N was instantly aware he was dealing with a professional Hunter.

"Y/N L/N?" the man asked with a Northern English accent.

"Yeah. Are you Sam Winchester?"

"I am. Nice to finally meet you kid."

"You too Sam. Heard a lot about you" Y/N said with a smile as they shook hands.

Y/N sat on the other side of a large table as Sam invited him to and Sam began his lesson.

"So I don't know if Dumbledore told you this but Ghoul Studies is a NEWT subject, a highly specialised one. Your assignments will be at a NEWT level difficulty but I'll help you with them, and you'll complete this class over two years. Good news is by the time you start your OWLs you'll already have a NEWT to your name. So that's cool."

Y/N nodded.

"Alright enough admin out the way, let's get on to the fun stuff" Sam said with a smile before going on to explain the ins and outs of hunting, how hunters worked under the Ministry but were independent of them. Basically when dark creatures went feral, it was the hunters who went in and took out the problem. It was a dirty, dangerous, scary and for the most part thankless job. But someone had to do it. Y/N knew most of these details, but his mind was blown when Sam dropped a bombshell.

Y/N's dad had been a hunter as well as an auror, which Y/N knew, but Thomas had been the one to train Sam. It's why Sam had jumped at the opportunity to train Y/N.

"I've spoken to Jacob a fair bit about your training generally, and your hunting training specifically. The training you've received, while at a hunters standard, has been quite haphazard. We're going to hopefully have a more systematic approach."

Sam smiled and then outlined all the skills and topics they would learn over the next two years and YN couldn't help but be excited as hell.

Weapons, spells, hands on experience. Ghoul Studies wasn't just a class. By the time you finished you were a qualified hunter. Meaning you were expected to know how to identify a problem and put it down.

Sam was happy seeing the grin on Y/N's face. Most witches and wizards ran for the hills at the mention of this stuff. It took a special breed to actively seek out and put these things down. Everything he had heard from Jacob, Mad-Eye, Dumbledore and 311 was right. This kid was made for this. Sam smiled:

"So first things first. A Patronus. Bread and butter for any Hunter. You need to keep back Dementors or Lethifolds nothing works better. Now.... why are you smiling Y/N? You heard of this before or something?"

Y/N smirked at Sam before unsheathing his wand.

Expecto Patronum

A Hungarian Horntail flew out and started circling the roof of the classroom before disappearing.

"Wow. Well colour me impressed. Good job. Never heard of a kid so young knowing how to cast that. Did Jacob teach you? He didn't mention it to me."

Y/N nodded and replied: "He taught me over the summer, when we stayed with my grandfather."

Sam had instantly gone up in Y/N's estimation. He didn't react in the slightest to the mention of Y/N's grandfather, and it was well known to everyone who he was.

"Out of curiosity, what memory did you use, Y/N?"

Y/N smirked and replied quickly: "I have a girlfriend."

Sam chuckled.

"Gotcha. Well I guess we're gonna move on to our second subject which is dark creatures. Starting with Vampires."

Sam spent the next two hours going over the myths and facts about Vampires as well as how to kill them and when to kill them.

"So a vamp family that's living peaceful, quiet, living off livestock. Wouldn't think of hurting them. But when a nest goes feral, starts kidnapping, torturing, killing, turning. Well then you take them out. Remember how?" Sam asked enthusiastically.

"Burn em or behead em. But beheading is best." Y/N replied.

"That's right. Alright read the first five chapters of Creatures Most Foul and we will discuss your second assessment next week."

Y/N nodded, putting away the parchment and quill he had been noting on before pausing and looking up. He asked with a puzzled tone:

"Wait, my second assessment?"

"Yeah" Sam smiled. "Your first assessment was supposed to be casting a Patronus. Well you've already got an Outstanding grade for that assignment so well done."

Y/N thanked Sam and shook his hand again, leaving class for the week. Sam was packing everything up when there was a knock at the door. He looked up to see his old headmaster walking in smiling.

"Sam, good to see you again" Dumbledore smiled warmly. It was returned by Sam. "You too Albus, always a pleasure."

"So how did Mr. L/N's first lesson go?" Albus asked.

"Outstanding Albus. He's a model student. Keen, quick on the uptake, soaks in new information and is already three weeks ahead of schedule" Sam replied happily, proudly gushing over his young student.

"How so?" The headmaster asked intrigued.

"Well the next three weeks were to be spent learning the Patronus, given his circumstances and his recent history with Dementors, but he already knew it."

Dumbledore looked stunned, which didn't happen often. Jacob hadn't mentioned training him to perform a Patronus. He asked: "What form was it, out of interest?"

"Believe it or not Albus, a Hungarian Horntail"

"Truly?" Dumbledore replied in genuine shock. The boy never ceased to amaze him.

Y/N had been going on to his friends for the past 20 minutes about Ghoul Studies. Usually he would go straight to the Reserve on a Sunday but he wasn't due to start in there until the following week. The girls and Harry looked decidedly worried as Y/N gushed about practical experience as a hunter while Ron had the look of jealousy about him.

"And get this, my major assignment for the course is to set up a dark creature and a dark hominid biome in the Reserve and populate them with dark creatures. How cool is that?"

"Wow" Hermione said in shock. "That sounds extreme for a third year assignment."

"Oh, did I forget to mention, love. It's a NEWT subject babe. I'm doing NEWTs."

The group was stunned. Hermione was worried about his workload but at the same time happy to see her boyfriend so excited. Good feelings and Ghoul Studies wouldn't last long though.
