FIFTY TWO ▶ AFTERMATH
"I'm a horrible person." Faye muttered as she sat at the picnic table outside of the Gilbert lake house. It possibly wasn't the best place for her, seeing Jeremy could still snap at any second and decide she was just perfect for a kill, but it was the only place she could really hide out after another soul crushing day of her life.
The Gilbert Lake house had already been her hiding spot for three days, feeling the need to avoid everyone; more like a few people. She didn't want to see Lacey after she had admitted her feelings for the murderer of Tyler's mother. Klaus wasn't a subject she wanted to talk about after he killed an innocent woman to get revenge of her own ex boyfriend and she knew their was a possibility Lacey would bring it up. Tyler was another person she wasn't up to seeing entirely. She had tried to comfort him when he came on to the scene of the crime two nights before, but he had brushed her off, no undoubtedly hating her for her small relations to Klaus.
And she definitely didn't want to see Klaus, no explanation needed.
Damon had been glad enough when she arrived at the Gilbert house, knowing he was there with the goal in mind to make Jeremy the greatest vampire hunter in existence. He wanted her help dealing with the fried teenage brain he was going to be somehow training to kill the living dead. Faye agreed, as long as Jeremy wouldn't kill her and she could sleep in one of the guest rooms until she felt like returning to the real world.
"You're not a horrible person." Damon told her from where he sat on top of the table, whittling a stake for Jeremy to practice with, "Taking three days off of life to train the idiots in need makes you a normal, somewhat nice, little hybrid."
Faye grumbled, placing her head down in her arms, "I should be at school comforting Tyler. He lost his mom and I'm hiding away like I went through worse."
Damon furrowed his brows at her, "You were the one to find her body. You were in shock; you had a shock blanket."
"Caroline needs to stop blabbing in the group chat." Faye rolled her eyes, "And I wasn't in shock, I was very upset because I just watched the guy I have feelings for finishing murdering my ex-boyfriend's mom."
"I think that's a pretty good reason to hide away from the world." The Salvatore offered her with a small smirk.
Faye rolled her eyes at him, "Yeah and you'll hide away because Elena admits that she's in love with you."
"I will stab you."
Faye let out a soft laugh and lifted herself from her pitiful slouch. Damon lowered the knife he had held up to her jokingly and gave a small smile.
"Besides, you told me Tyler brushed you off when you went to give your condolences. He doesn't want to see you." Damon said on a more sour note.
"Maybe it's best I'm here." She added, defeated, with a small sigh,
"Exactly." The raven haired vampire commented before glancing over towards the small clearing in front of the lake house where Jeremy and Matt, who had come to keep Jeremy company, were sparing pitifully, "And maybe we can teach that idiot a good form."
"He doesn't need good form. He needs to learn how to stay alive." Faye responded.
She watched as Jeremy picked up Matt by his waist and flipped him on to his back to the ground. Matt let out a loud groan while Jeremy was extremely proud of himself.
"Did you see that?" Jeremy called to her and Damon with a proud grin on his face.
Damon got up from his spot and walked over to him, "You couldn't miss it. It was in slow motion."
"Hey, give him a little credit." Faye shouted out to Damon when she saw Jeremy's disappointment, "On my effective scale, it was at least a four."
"Not helping!" Jeremy called to her, "Someone teach me something useful. We've been here for days, and so far, all Damon's done is bark orders."
"Okay." Damon agreed with him, "Faye, off the bench."
"Wait what?" Faye furrowed her brows.
"Kid wants a shot at the title." He explained to her as he tossed Jeremy a stake "You're gonna give him it. Take a seat at the bench, quarterback."
Faye finally realized what he meant. She was the strongest there and she was the best to take on Jeremy. The hybrid stood up and removed the jacket she had on her, revealing her tank top. She stepped up to plate and eyed Jeremy as Damon took a step back from the action.
"Jeremy, you're not ready for this." Matt tried to convince his friend, but the Gilbert wasn't listening.
Jeremy was the first one to make a move towards Faye, running towards her with the stake gripped in his hand. She sped forward with ease, grabbing him on her way. Faye forced him to her height and wrapped her arm around his neck, holding him with her hand pressed on his jaw.
"All I would have to do to kill you would apply pressure-" Faye cut herself off the minute she heard a truck pulling up and the scent of pizza filling her nostrils. She dropped Jeremy to the ground, the smell distracting her, "Pizza."
Damon looked at her confused until he looked to the side and saw the pizza delivery truck pulling up to the lake house. He let out a groan, "Really? Again?"
"Don't get mad at them, it was me this time." Faye told him, "Can I borrow ten bucks?"
"Why don't I just pay for it?" Damon narrowed his eyes at her. The pizza delivery girl got out of the ruck holding everyone's preferred pizza in her hands.
"Double pepperoni, three days in a row. You guys eat anything else?" She said to them. Damon sped behind her.
"Why? Are you offering?" He said to her, causing her to whirl around and jump, startled by his sudden appearance. Faye rolled her eyes annoyed, wanting her pizza. Damon took the pizza himself and handed the blonde in front of him some cash, "That's something extra to cut off the pizza pipeline for a couple a days. No matter how much they beg, don't come back." He added the last sentence after Faye's loud protest against it.
The delivery girl apologized to them, flashing a sympathetic look at the strawberry blonde who was crushed by Damon's words. She left and Damon walked over to the picnic table with the pizza. He set it down as Jeremy glared at him.
"What? You're going to starve us now?"
"If that's what it takes to make you into a hunter." Damon told him, "Now, run around the lake...twice."
Jeremy gained an annoyed look, but started into a run after he knew what Damon was going to hold against him. Damon recruited Matt too, forcing him to run to get the pizza.
"It's gonna be gone by the time they get back." Faye muttered as she reached to grab a slice. Damon slapped her hand away.
"No it's not because you're running too."
"But I'm trainer number two."
"Run or no pizza."
Faye huffed before taking off in the other direction to catch up with Matt and Jeremy, desperate for the food she had ordered herself.
__
Faye got what she wanted in the end after taking two laps around the lake with Matt and Jeremy in human speed, along with an extra lap that Damon forced her to do in punishment for bringing the pizza to them once again. It wasn't long before it was all gone though and she forced to watch Jeremy be trained to kill.
She toyed with the wooden bullets that sat on the table for Jeremy to load the pistol he was given with. Damon watched over him carefully, making sure he was doing everything right. Faye wouldn't know if he was or though, guns never being her thing since she was cursed with claws and fangs to defend herself with. But despite her small to none knowledge of guns, she knew he wasn't going as fast as he would need though if it ever came down to him running out bullets and finding himself in need to reload to live.
Jeremy finished up and handed the gun to Damon, who in return removed the bullets from the magazine.
"Good. Now, do it like your life depends on it, 'cause it does." He told him before handing the clip back
Jeremy scoffed at him, standing up from his seat as he went to grab the bullets to put inside, "Don't act like you care about my life. You care about the hunter's mark and curing Elena so she's not sired to your ass."
"If it makes you feel any better, I care about you." Faye interjected, earning a smile from Jeremy. Damon though ignored her and spoke to the Gilbert boy.
"Both require you to be alive. Which is why I updated our relationship status to 'it's complicated.'" Damon glanced over at him, "Have you talked to her at all? Elena?"
"Maybe. Why?"
"Running out of voicemails to listen to?" Faye teased him with the corner of her lip turned up.
"I'm sorry. Did I interrupt playtime?"
Faye's posture stiffened the minute his voice seeped into her ears. Out of all the people she didn't want to see; it had to be him to be the one to appear at her safe haven which was no longer a safe haven. She shut her eyes, trying to contain the emotions that were suddenly flooding her.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Jeremy asked him, his tone dripping in disgust.
"I'm simply appreciating the sights and smells of nature, neither of which presently include rotting vampire flesh, so I'm a bit concerned. How many vampires has he killed?"
"If we throw Jeremy out into the real world right now, he's chum."
"And we actually have a regard for human life, unlike some people, Klaus." Faye commented bitterly. Klaus clicked in tongue in annoyance, adverting his gaze from the strawberry blonde he had his eyes on the minute he arrived on the Gilbert Lake House grounds.
"Yeah, see, that's not a number." Klaus responded to both Damon and Faye, "Twelve. That's a number. That's how many of my hybrids I slaughtered with my sword. Three. That's how many days it took to quell the urge to kill your brother after he knowingly watched as I walked into a death trap. One. That's the number of purposes you serve."
Faye watched him with her jaw clenched tightly, listening to every word he said. She hated that she couldn't hate him now. Every word made her want to, but she was unable to.
Klaus continued on, "You are here to grow Jeremy's mark, so I'll ask again...How many vampires has he killed since he's been here?"
"Zero." Damon answered.
A smirk appeared on Klaus' lips, "That's a pity. I'm going to need that cure sooner rather than later. Hybrid shortage and all. How can I help?"
Damon looked at him for a second before grabbing the gun he had sat down, "You know, now that you mention it..." He placed the clip back in that was full of bullets once again, "Jeremy, watch and learn."
A gunshot rang throughout the lake grounds as Damon fired his first bullet into Klaus Mikaelson. The second came soon enough, then the third, then the fourth Klaus jolted with each wooden bullet that entered his stomach, going backwards towards one of the trees. When Damon was finished, he held himself against the tree for support.
"That's for Carol Lockwood." Damon spoke after he lowered the gun with Klaus glaring at him.
"Do us a favor and leave." Faye told Klaus in a low tone before getting up and walking toward the lake house, not wanting to see his face any longer than she already had.
__
Klaus had left the vicinity after he had been shot, well according to Damon, but she wasn't taking the risk of seeing him again. She was healing from the wounds he had created by killing Carol Lockwood. He ripped her open with ease, showing he was never going stop his ways of killing the wrong people, innocent people, and if she was ever going to act on the feelings she had, she couldn't handle that.
Faye walked out of the bathroom after the shower she had taken to clean herself from the grime she had gained that day, having it already turned to night. A towel was clutched in one hand, attempting to dry her curls. She was slowly starting to make her way to the room Jeremy had given her after she had been invited in, but stopped in the middle of the hall when she caught an odd scent.
It was the scent of a vampire, one that she didn't recognize at all. A frown marred her face as she looked towards the direction it was coming from. There wasn't any other vampires in town that she knew of and the person had to be newly turned whoever it was.
"Hey, Jeremy." Faye grabbed his arm as he passed by, heading towards the bathroom she just came from, "Who just came here?"
"Oh, that pizza girl ran out of gas and needs a phone." He informed her with a small boyish smile.
"She wasn't a vampire the last time we saw her right?"
Something jumpstarted inside of Jeremy, fear filling his eyes. There was a loud shot that came from the front foyer of the wooden home, one that recognizably came from Matt. Jeremy was the first to dart in the direction, Faye following behind.
They walked in upon Matt with the newly turned pizza girl trying to take a bite out of him. Faye darted to grab one of the stakes from one of the tables, tossing it to Jeremy for him to make the kill. The Gilbert boy tore the blonde from his friend before staking her in the heart, making his first vampire kill since the hybrid Faye had helped offer to him.
Damon arrived just as the girl's skin finished turning into the dull grey colored covered in her dried viens. His eyes traveled from her to Jeremy with a small amount of shock. Everyone in the room watched as Jeremy's mark travelled up his arm, gaining a new piece of the map that would lead them to the cure.
"What the fuck was that?" Faye growled once everything was said and done, "Who turned her?"
"Who do you think?" Damon responded, stepping past the barrier of the door.
"Klaus." Jeremy answered for Faye.
"I can't believe-" Faye cut herself off because she could believe it. It was a Klaus move. He needed the cure and Jeremy's mark to grow; creating vampires for him to kill was the way to go.
Faye grimaced in anger before moving towards the girl that laid still on the ground. She looked down at her with sadness in her eyes. She didn't deserve to just be a ploy in a scheme to get what they wanted. There shouldn't be any innocent death involved.
"We gotta' bury her." Faye said in a soft tone.
"I'll take this one." Damon offered, already going to pick up the girl's body.
"I think I'm gonna help."
__
A soft sigh escaped her lips as she placed the shovel on the ground beside the freshly packed shallow grave. Faye had opted to finish everything up when Damon had gotten a call from Elena and had her rush to him to rejoice in love. She did what she said and buried the girl more four feet under than six. The hybrid wiped her brow, worn out from her use of strength and needing a blood bag when she returned back to the lake house.
"I really do not want to talk to you." Faye told the presence she could feel creeping up on her from behind. She dropped her hand to the side and stood up straight, but not turning around to face them.
"What I did-"
"What you did was unnecessary." The strawberry blonde didn't even let him finish.
"Jeremy's mark wasn't progressing and he needed a push. It was neccesary."
"Is killing innocent people really neccesary, Klaus?" Faye asked him as she finally turned around to face the man who had caused her so much pain in just nearly two years, but still managed to make her undead heart feel as if it was beating again. He stood with his hands clasped behind his back, watching her carefully, "Wait, I forgot, you clearly don't have much of a heart and think it is."
Klaus shut his eyes, containing his annoyance with her inside him before speaking, "You're more angry about the mayor than about this girl you didn't know at all."
Faye was. She was upset over the girl who had lost her life for their gain, but it was Carol Lockwood's death that made her enraged, "I get the hybrids, you know." The strawberry blonde said to him, "I was expecting you to kill them all and make sure every single one knew that you weren't someone to fuck with. And I knew you were gonna go after Tyler. I ran around Mystic Falls looking for you so you wouldn't kill him, but instead, you killed his mom. His mom who had nothing to do with any of this, but she was right in front of you and you thought, this would definitely bring more pain to Tyler than killing him."
Klaus tried to get a word in, but Faye continued on, "I finally could see the good in you and then you do things like this that make me go back to wanting to hate you. How the hell did you manage to flip around so fast?" Faye questioned him.
"Faye, I never meant to hurt you." Klaus said, visibly affected by the words as much as he tried to hide it.
"You hurt me anyways, Klaus." She bit at him, "And you know who fucking hurt worse of all, Tyler! The town! You killed the fucking mayor and then killed this innocent pizza delivery girl."
The side of him that showed some sympathy had washed away with the mention of all the others he had done wrong in the past few days, "Collateral damage, love" He replied in a harsh tone.
The words made her let out a loud yell in annoyance, having heard them once or twice from him and from herself. It was a Klaus thing to say, but in her eyes, they weren't collateral damage. Their deaths weren't neccesary or needed.
"You are so fucking-" Faye pulled at the roots of her hair in anger as she stared at Klaus, "I can't believe I actually have feelings for you!"
Silence filled the area where Faye had decided would be best for a burial. She caught what she said, the filter of hers seeming to have failed her once again. Her lips were pressed tightly together as she looked at Klaus, who stood in shock at what she had admitted to him.
Klaus finally returned to reality and the exclamation had seemed to have released something inside him. It wasn't long before Faye felt herself with a back pressed against a tree, his hands on her waist and his body pressed against hers. She gulped.
"What did you just say?" He asked her even though he had clearly heard.
"It doesn't matter anymore." Faye rushed out. She squirmed in his hold, "Now, let me go."
A small smirk played on his lips, "Repeat what you said and I will."
Faye scoffed at him, "Do you think this is all fun and games, Klaus?" He wasn't letting up so she let out a sigh, "You are the most repulsive-"
"Faye."
"I said that I have feelings for you." Faye finally did what he wanted, "Because you were this nice guy who did good things and didn't act evil towards me and my friends for a while. I didn't see you as Klaus, the hybrid who forced me to kill over one hundred people during the worst summer of my life, but as Klaus, the guy who I could consider a friend. Now, though, I think those are slowly going away as I come to my sense and realize there's no possible way you can evolve from that."
Each word was meant to drip with venom, but it came out more as if she was disappointed than angry. It made the smirk on Klaus' face slowly diminished into nothing. Faye managed to push him away from her, managing to make the escape from the spot she had been trapped in.
"I wanna think that guy who told me about that one time he was on a trek in the Andies and thought about being human because of a hummingbird is hiding behind that hard cold exterior you wear." Faye muttered to him as she walked away, grabbing the shovels from the ground along the way. She stopped to finish her sentence, shaking her head, "But there's a part of me that doesn't think he is."
With that, she left Klaus alone and kept walking on with her thoughts racing.
