Why are you called Etherious?

It begins with a young Zeref back when he was attending the Mildian Academy of Magic, where he presents an interesting research thesis on Death Magic, But Zeref is admonished for delving into an inappropriate subject for someone of his age.

"It's wonderful research, but the topic is a little heavy, don't you think?"

"This is hardly appropriate subject matter for a child!"

"First of all, matters of life and death have been forbidden territory for magic since ancient times!"

"Even adults must treat them with utmost delicasy!"

"Yes... Tampering with life and death would enrage the god Ankhselam!"

"You are never to research that kind of magic ever again!"

"Do you understand, Zeref-kun?"

".... Yes" Young Zeref replied.

Zeref was simply curious on why people are born and why people die, which would set off a chain of events that lead to his current predicament. He wakes up in the present time and thinks about Natsu and (Y/N), but laments on the death of his younger brother and sister.

That was the catalyst to Zeref researching the aspect of death.

Zeref comes up with the idea of the "R-System," which can theoretically bring the dead back to life.

"This is still only theoretical, but assuming we can clear the hurdle of gathering 2.7 billion edea of magical energy then we should be able to create the R-system" Zeref Explained.

"Thanks incredible!"

"It is an impressive design"

"He's saying it could revive the dead?"

"He's the greatest genius Mildian Academy has ever taught!"

The Headmaster is annoyed because Zeref was warned not to mess with any magic that pertains to dealing with the dead. This flashback subtly introduces the existence of a god named Ankhselam, who is worshiped as a major deity.

Zeref is warned to stop, but refuses and claims the Eclipse System is almost dead.

(Remember the Eclipse System during the Grand Magic Games?!)

The headmaster bluntly tells Zeref that his younger brother cannot be brought back to life.

With that, Zeref accidentally kills the headmaster and everyone else inside.

Zeref laments that Ankhselam is punishing him with a "curse of contradiction." He wanted to find a way to bring people back to life, but ends up being a mage of Death Magic. It leads to Zeref's reason for creating the demons that they will be strong enough to kill even him.

But none were able to kill Zeref.

This leads Zeref to make his ultimately creation, E.N.D.

"The final two demons I made was given a fitting name. That was you.."

E.N.D, Zeref's most powerful demon, is short for Etherious Natsu Dragneel and Etherious (Y/N) Dragneel.

"Yes, You are the Etherious reincarnation of my brother and sister, and the strongest of them all."

"I am Zeref Dragneel, your older brother.
Natsu. (Y/N)."

That means Zeref is technically Natsu's father or brother, but Natsu and (Y/N) is the Etherious reincarnation of Zeref's deceased younger brother and sister. (Thunder Tribe Vs Fairy Tail.)
