Plot summary: One mission takes an unlikely turn that changes that way Y/N and Five perceive each other.
"There must be a mistake. We just got back from a mission, and now I get stuck with this imbecile for another one?" Y/N asks The Handler as she shows her the memo she had just received a few minutes ago.
Five simply stood beside her and shot her his signature murderous smile. "You might want to assess who's the real imbecile between us, Y/L/N."
Y/N shot him a glare. "Shut up, Hargreeves."
"Both of you, shut up." The Handler barked, their bickering beginning to get on her nerves. The white-haired woman stirred her coffee without looking them in the eyes.
"I have received several complaints from your department about your immature and constant arguments. There was even one instance where your pathetic quarrels got out of hand-"
"The lamp was definitely her fault." Five interjected.
Y/N scoffed in disbelief. "Wow, so I was the one who slammed the lamp on the table specifically named 'Mr. Five'. Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're the imbecile-"
The Handler once again interrupted them by snatching the name plate on her desk and hurling it across the room, puncturing the wooden wall.
Both Y/N and Five fell silent, but occasionally exchanged deadly looks at each other.
"As I was saying..." she trailed off in her mock-sweet voice. "I've decided I need to relocate you, Y/N, to a different department."
Y/N opened her mouth to defend herself, but seeing the dangerous stare The Handler was giving her made her opt against doing so. Five smirked as he watched them.
"For the time being, expect that I will be sending you both out on missions much more frequently than before. I need you out of this office as much as possible before things finally... settle." The Handler spoke coolly, eyeing both her agents.
Sighing in defeat, Y/N scanned the paper in her hand. "This is it? A mere retrieval mission?" she asked incredulously, unamused by the task at hand.
Five seemed confused, as well. "So we just need to locate this letter? That's it?"
The Handler took a sip of her coffee as she hummed in agreement. "Locate and burn, emphasis on the last order. It is imperative that this letter be destroyed because once it reaches our target Henry Danvers, an alternate chain of events will take place, and we don't really want that, do we?"
Y/N laughed humorlessly. "No offense, but why not send those idiots Hazel and Cha-Cha to do this piece of cake? Clearly this is more their area of expertise than mine?"
It was Five's turn to scoff. "Oh, really now?"
Rolling her eyes, Y/N awaited the older woman's response. The Handler shook her head lightly. "I told you... I need to get you out of the office as much as possible because of the ruckus you two children keep causing here."
"Children?!" Y/N and Five exclaimed in unison, making them whip their heads and look at each other with utmost disgust. The Handler chuckled. "That's adorable, you agree on one thing."
Five pinched the bridge of his nose. This was not how he intended his day to go. "Fine. Give us the time and place."
The Handler pulled up a piece of paper from her jacket pocket and handed it to the young man, who rudely snatched it away from her.
Just as Y/N was about to peek over, Five crumpled the piece of paper and stomped on it, much to Y/N's irritation. With one last glare at The Handler, she followed Five as he left the office.
"So, where to?" Y/N asked. Five stayed silent but continued walking. "Hey, I need to know where it is, dumbass-"
"You don't need to know since I'm teleporting us there, alright?" Five sneered. Y/N rolled her eyes and walked away.
The boy groaned in exasperation. "Where are you going?"
"To get my damn gear, a**hole." Y/N derided, taking long strides towards her cubicle when a hand grabbed her wrist and a bright blue light enveloped her.
The next thing she knew, both of them were at the location.
Rubbing her eyes as her vision adjusted to her new surrounding, Y/N became furious. "What the hell, Five?! Are you too much of an moron to understand that I need my gear on missions?"
Five ignored her as he scanned the area for any possible hostiles. "You won't need any gear. This is a retrieve-and-destroy mission only, remember?" he muttered under his breath.
Y/N tugged at her hair. "Take me back, Hargreeves. I need my damn knives!"
"As if you were any better in combat when you had them." Five retorted with a smirk. Y/N's eyes grew wide at his insult and smacked him on the shoulder.
Five yelped at the contact. "Stop that." Y/N took that as a challenge and hit him repeatedly until Five had to grab her hands and yank them away.
They stealthily approached the specific room where the letter was supposedly dropped off, completely wary of their surroundings. When they heard footsteps, Five immediately teleported them to a blind spot to avoid being caught.
There were even instances when Five's reflexes got ahead of him and they ended up teleporting to where the bulky bodyguards where at. It was sheer luck that they weren't seen.
"You idiot! We could've been seen!" Y/N whisper-yelled. Five rolled his eyes. "But we weren't, were we?"
"Let's hurry up and get the hell out of this sh*t hole." Y/N huffed, anxious of how easy this all seemed. She wasn't used to being in less challenging environments such as this. They cautiously walked down the circling staircase when Five spotted something.
"There it is." Five pointed at the plain white envelope stamped with a red seal that had a gold ribbon on it. Y/N squinted her eyes at the letter. "Well, that was easy." Y/N remarked.
They quickened their pace towards the table, but just as they reached the last step, a collection of voices echoed in the nearby hall, putting both agents to a halt.
"Sh*t, they're coming." Y/N commented, slamming her back against the wall and trying to sneak a peek at the incoming goons.
Five instantly attempted to activate his teleportation powers, but for some reason, all he seemed to be doing was creating blue balls of light from his hands. Y/N was growing both impatient and worried.
"Hey! Anytime now!" she squeaked, beads of sweat forming on her head. Five gritted his teeth as he concentrated, but they weren't going anywhere.
"Sh*t, I can't." he hissed, clenching his fists.
"What do you mean you can't?" Y/N fumed. The men were approaching them fast, and they had no means to flee or fight.
"Damn it!" Five grunted, punching the air with both hands in frustration. Y/N breathed heavily. "Great. I don't even have my knives with me, thanks to you."
"Now's not the time, Y/N-"
"Oh, you think?!"
Five's eyes swiftly swept across the room in search of an ideal hiding spot. He found a half-open door with no lights. Hesitant but without a choice, he took hold of Y/N's wrist once more and hurried to the seemingly empty room.
"What are you-"
"Shut up and follow me." Five cut her off. Just as he shut the door, the guards stepped into view. Both agents' paused when the guards stopped talking and walking.
It turns out the room Five decided to shove them both in was the employees' dressing room.
"Nice choice, genius." Y/N ridiculed as her eyes stared at the three musclebound men on the other side of the door, all with stern and terrible looks on their faces.
"Gee, did you have a better idea?" Five snapped back, giving her a deadly glare.
When one of the men took a step in their direction, Y/N unconsciously clutched on Five's arm and squeezed it, giving the young man quite a shock. His eyes flickered from the hostiles to the hand gripping his forearm.
Another step forward by the guard made Five put his arm over Y/N protectively, and it was Y/N's turn to be surprised.
"Let me just grab my gun." the chestnut-haired guard spoke, and his two companions nodded as they crossed their arms and stood as lookouts.
"Sh*t, he's coming in here, he's coming in here, he's coming in here-" Y/N rambled in panic, running her hands through her hair and pacing around the small room they were in. Five's eyes were wide open, focused on the man heading their way.
His eyes danced around the room as he thought of some way around the sticky situation they were in, when an idea clicked in his head.
It wasn't his best idea, but it seemed to be the only feasible one.
"I can't believe I'm going down like this-" Y/N professed as she clamped her hands over her ears. Without warning, Five grabbed ahold of Y/N's shoulders and fixed her in position.
"I need to kiss you."
Y/N was flabbergasted. "What the hell?!" was her response at his outrageous suggestion.
"Do you want to die?" Five blurted out in a rush as the hostile stopped directly in front of the door.
Y/N's face screamed with helplessness at the situation, but even she thought it was the only option they had. "No, but-"
The doorknob began to twist, so Five didn't waste a second and cupped Y/N's face with his hands and met her lips with his own. Shocked, Y/N felt her eyes shutting as their lips began to move in sync.
She could feel one of his hands slowly making their way to her nape, entangling his fingers in her locks. Y/N internally groaned at his touch, and rested one hand on his chest while the other gripped on his necktie.
The creaking sound of the door didn't stop the pair from making out. "What the- where did you two kids come from?"
To stay into character, both didn't dare pull away. Five even went as far as breathing excessively to make things appear believable.
Not that Y/N was complaining, though.
"Is there a problem, Chad- oh." the other two guards entered the scene with their hands grasping their own guns. But, they were surprised at seeing the two teenagers in the room.
"They must've strayed from the party two rooms ahead." the guy identified as Chad responded, cringing at the sloppy scene in front of them. He patted Five on the shoulder, which made the latter pull away with an annoyed expression on his face.
"Do you mind? We're kinda busy here." he stated, noticeably out of breath. Y/N played along by pulling him back closer to her, which Five reciprocated.
"This is the staff's room, you little sh*ts. Take your business someplace else." the other guard demanded, puffing his chest out as intimidatingly as possible.
Five and Y/N groaned in exaggeration, and glared at the three suited-up men as they walked past them hand-in-hand. When they reached table, Y/N put her pickpocketing skills to use and stole the letter from its place.
As Chad locked the door, Five observed that the other two men were watching them with suspicion. When he was sure Y/N had possession of the letter, he gently pushed her against the nearby wall and dipped his head down to kiss her once more.
"What- oomff." Y/N was silenced by the sensation of his lips on hers again. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the guards eyeing them with raised eyebrows. So, she wrapped her arms around his neck and got into the moment.
Chad, finally having his gun, locked the door and walked past the two undercover agents snogging for the second time. He shook his head and scoffed at his two acquaintances, "Teenagers."
As the sound of their footsteps faded away, Y/N and Five grew oblivious to the fact that their lips were still attached to each other. Five's grip on Y/N's waist became tighter as he continued to press himself against her on the wall. Both seemed to be savoring every moment with much intent that the only thing that made them finally pull away was the need to catch their breath.
The pair was utterly speechless at what had just transpired between them. Y/N opened and closed her mouth, unable to find the right words to say to describe the crazy feelings raging in her insides right now.
Five pursed his lips together, and Y/N observed how his eyes darted back and forth from her eyes and lips. Coughing to clear his throat, he took a step back. He fixed his jacket and tie while Y/N did hers, too.
"I've got the... um... the letter." Y/N stammered, and she mentally facepalmed herself. Since when was she a blubbering mess in front of Five Hargreeves?
Five subconsciously licked his lips and nodded. He stopped himself from smiling, but wasn't sure if he was able to resist the blush on his cheeks. Y/N, on the other hand, was the shade of a tomato - bobbing up and down with her hands behind her back.
"Let's finish the job." Five took out a lighter from his back pocket, and drew it closer to the letter.
"On second thought..." he trailed off, closing the lid and returning the lighter. Y/N's eyebrows furrowed together.
He nodded his head, gesturing the letter in Y/N's hand. "Keep it close. I have a feeling we're gonna need this as we plot our escape from that dreadful place."
Y/N couldn't believe what she was hearing. "How did you know-"
Five shushed her by taking her hand in his and tagging her along the halls. "I know everything. Come on, I know where we can lay low for a while."
Y/N suddenly pulled away from his grasp, much to Five's puzzlement. "What?"
"How do I know I can trust you?" she inquired wearily, placing her hands on her hips. Five's lips tugged upwards in a mischievous smile.
"You trusted me enough to let me kiss you back there, based on my recollection." Y/N's mouth fell slightly ajar at his statement.
Five gave her a genuine smile, the first he showed her since their first meeting at the Commission. He extended his hand to her, and when Y/N took it hesitantly, he reassured her by rubbing circles on the back of her hand using his thumb.
"The Handler is not going to have us the second time around, Y/N. But we're gonna have to work together."
Y/N stayed quiet for a while, but smiled softly and nodded in agreement. In a few seconds, she allowed herself to be teleported alongside Five - a newfound feeling of hope and gratification surging through her veins.
Wherever Five Hargreeves went, Y/N knew that's where she wanted to be.
