The Man With the Answers
The next morning, Merlin woke the group as the sun was rising from the horizon. The cave had become extremely cold, and all of them were sniffling. Merlin handed everyone a small portion of food, and let Ebony run to grab herself a wile animal of some sort.
"So what is on the agenda today?" Percival asked Merlin.
"Well I need to speak to a higher druid about the destiny. I also need to figure out a way to round up a lot more troops, and free the knights." Merlin told them. Merlin leaned against Ebony with his magic book, and continued to reread it. The others leaned up against Ebony as well, but Arthur paced around.
Merlin used his magic to warm the area around himself, so the others were warm. Arthur tried finding objects to make a torch out of.
"What are you doing Merlin? We shouldn't be relaxing and reading." Arthur told him. Merlin glared at him.
"For your information, I am looking at spells that can help us." Merlin snarled at him. Merlin just was not in a good mood as it was, and having Arthur breathe down his neck didn't approve his mood.
"What's that spell for?" Lancelot asked, pointing to one of the pages Merlin was reading.
"It's a spell to navigate under the ground. It works in caves and tunnels. If I can memorize this spell, I can see if there are any other ways to get out or find help through this tunnel." Merlin told him. Arthur sat next to the fire, and got his chainmail heating up to keep himself warm.
Merlin flipped through the chapter on the spell, and read more on it. He had to memorize the spell that turns off the vision. Apparently the spell almost enables you to echo locate, except there's no need for echo. All of the pockets of air with sort of show itself, and Merlin can see where each path leads. The downside was you can't see people or objects, just the outlines of the tunnels. So Merlin would need to know the spell that turns it off for him to be able to see.
It took Merlin constant mental repetition before he was able to memorize the two spells.
Merlin was a bit scared, because if the second spell didn't work, he'd be stuck not able to see anything except tunnels. Merlin looked towards the path, and casted the spell onto himself. All the light draining from his vision, and all that was visible were blue smoky areas that resembled tunnels. As Merlin looked below himself, he could see the tunnels that were below his face. Only faint lines showed where the tunnels lead to, and it only took a quit head jerk to make Merlin extremely disoriented and fall down from dizziness.
"Are you alright?" Arthur asked as he helped Merlin up.
"We can finally explore the tunnels. I can see the passages, and where they lead. It's a little foggy, but I have a good sense of where a major cavern is, and that it leads to an exit other than the one we entered."
Gwain, Percival, Lancelot, Gwain, and Arthur started to follow Merlin as he lead the group down the tunnel. Merlin was aware that the others vision was impaired, so he lit a blue flame, and guided them through the tunnels.
"Do tell me if I'm about to trip or run into something. I can't see anyone or anything." Merlin told them.
As they walked, Merlin looked back.
"I think this will take awhile. We might want to bring the horses to speed this up." Merlin suggested.
"But we'll have to head back. We would have wasted a good hour." Gwain told him. Merlin turned to face where they were walking, and called down the tunnel. They could hear the echoing of his whistle. Suddenly, they heard the distance clop and thump of hooves and paws running towards them. It took a couple of minutes, but the horses came running at full speed, along with Ebony.
Everyone mounted a horse, and Lancelot hopped on with Merlin. Merlin guided the horse carefully but quickly, and he also lit flames as they trotted through the tunnels. At one point, they could feel the incline of the tunnels as they slowly descended. But then at the last moment, the tunnel inclined upwards, and the horses were fighting the hill. Gwain exclaimed happily.
"I can see light!"
Merlin spoke the second spell to revert his eyes to normal, and then guided the horse to the light. The longer Merlin looked at the light, the more he thought of flames instead of the sun. Merlin slowed down his horse, in return slowing the others down, and they walked. Soon they could hear noises.
Merlin hopped off his horse, and slowly approached the opening. When he peered around the corner, he saw a whole opening, with candles lighting the walls. He saw some blankets laid in the middle of the room, with a pot to the side, and some clothes drying to the side.
"Is anyone here?" Merlin echoed through the room. He held an arm behind his back to signal the others to stay where they were.
Merlin watched as an old man walked into the room, and made eye contact with Merlin. The man was slouched over, with a poorly cut beard, mismatched clothing garbs, and a long stick that he waved around. Merlin immediately knew he was a Seer, with the characteristic milky eyes and strong magic aura.
"Hello Emrys. Please come in with your friends. I've been expecting you for quite some time now." He told him. The others heard, and followed Merlin wearily into the open room of lit candles. The man extended a crooked hand out.
"Sit anywhere you'd like. I normally sit on the blankets. It's much too warm to really use them." He told him. Arthur did notice that the room was a lot warmer than the rest of the tunnels. Most likely from the constant burning candles. Everyone wearily sat down in front of the man. Everyone sat behind Merlin, but Arthur, who sat next to him in case the stranger was dangerous.
"Who are you? I know you are a Seer." Merlin told him. The man nodded slowly, and licked his lips.
"I do not have a name. Only a destiny. I had to stay here to wait for the day that you need my help." The man told Merlin. Merlin felt very comfortable around this mysterious man. He certainly did not have anything negative to his soul. He felt, all around, serene.
"Are you a druid? How come you are not with other druids?" The questions just seemed to roll of his tongue as if by memory.
"The story of my life is quite simple, really. When I was born, my family thought knew I was blind. They abandoned me to a camp of druids. As I grew up, I showed the signs of magical power, and Seer capabilities. They searched for my mark, but my skin was bare. They thought I was an accidental product of magic, so they abandoned me in this cave. The first night I slept, I had a premonition of what the future would hold. I decided to stay here so our paths would cross one day. I have basically learned the area by heart, and can travel quickly without thought." The man explained to Merlin. Everyone was intrigued by him. Merlin especially.
"Could magic truly have a flaw as to create a non magic child with Seer abilities?" Merlin asked.
"Of course it can. Look at us. We are both not druid, but born with capabilities unknown to even us. We are so flawed, that we were made immortal. Only magic could think of such a cruel thing for two unlucky, let very lucky people. The only difference from you and I, if that I am allowed to die whenever I want, but you are not." The man told him. Merlin froze, and Arthur looked at him.
"What was it that you said? You are both immortal?" Gwain asked confused and worrisome. Merlin didn't know what to do. He wanted to both hide in a hole, and confront the man who knew so much about himself.
"How is it that you know?" Merlin asked him. He sealed his fate. It was very apparent to everyone in the room that Merlin recognized this as true.
"I was shown-" The man started before Arthur interrupted.
"Wait a moment. You're immortal? You cannot die." Arthur asked. Merlin breathed in. He didn't want to directly answer to them. Merlin connected to the old man's mind.
'Is there any way to make them forget what they just heard? I've been trying to keep this a secret for as long as I could.' Merlin spoke to him. The man shook his head.
'It was destined for them to know now. Nothing can change it.' The man told him. Merlin disconnected his mind from the man's, and took a deep breath.
"Let's listen to what he has to say, and then I'll speak to you. We have bigger issues on the rise." Merlin told them, not even daring to look at any of them.
"Do you know how to defeat this war? Is there a way for me to gather up a couple hundred troops in the span of a couple of days, and take back the kingdom?" Merlin asked. The man nodded. His face had remained blank and neutral the entire visit.
"There is a place that is very precious to you. It is the place of miracles. The most horrible of souls get wept upon, and given the chance of eternal bliss. It is the place where you shall be reunited centuries after now. A hand will thrust out, and hand you the ticket to glory. For victory and justice for magic kind. You will speak to an old friend, and they will guide you to the path you must take." The man concluded. He stood up, and carefully walked to another exit of the room. He turned back, and motioned for the group to follow. They walked with him for a minute, and then found themselves standing at the mouth of the exit to the mountain.
There was a massive drop, and a it was situated on the side of a valley. The area at the bottom was deserted, with no grass grown, and barely any sunshine peeked through.
"The final battle will be here. Where the sun only shines for one month in a year. You see, the mountains were once constructed by the earliest druids. All the magic was concentrated in them, so they created these mountains to serve this purpose. The legends go that the first druid families were born from the mountain, and then breed with each other. You can feel the magic's strongest force right below the valley. Only one that was born of magic with vision can communicate with the unseen force, and start the final battle. Between those of the light, and those of the dark." The man continued. Merlin stood there, and looked around. The other side had a plateau, and the bottom was barren except for dead grass that had fallen occasionally. He felt the pull of the valley. A calling.
"I think you should go look for the place. Time is short, and very soon the valley will be enshrouded in an 11 month darkness. If you do not fight now, you will not be able to fight back." The man urged. Merlin looked around the valley one last time, and walked away.
"Thank you sir. You have helped me a lot." Merlin thanked him. The man grabbed onto Merlin's sleeve, and pulled him close.
"Do not worry about the future. You will find the person that can live with you for eternity. They will sacrifice themselves in the end so you can have an end as well. Just do not deny what is in plain sight, but deny the possibility of no possibility." The man spoke to him one last time. He pushed the other out of the cave, and watched them climb onto their horses, and trot back to their beginning.
Once the group reached back to their start, Merlin good a break to take a sip of water. He wanted to just rest for the rest, and hopefully wake up from this horrific nightmare that was reality.
"Merlin. You need to start explaining yourself." Arthur told him. Arthur sat down in front of Merlin, then did Gwain, then Lancelot, then Percival. They sat before him, and for once gave him their 100% undivided attention. Merlin straightened up, and told his story.
"The day I went to the druids, I found out some different pieces of information than what I originally told you." Merlin started. "I was told that I am immortal. That there would be no way for me to die permanently. As long as there is a living sorcerer or druid left, I will never be able to die. So the time that Gaius pronounced me dead. I really was dead. But the magic revived me. And the time that Leon sliced my throat. I knew that if I let myself die, then come back, it would be completely fixed with no scar, just how my body's scars all faded. But I could not let you see me die, because then you'd know. So I healed myself as fast as I could, and healed my vocal chords. The reason that, since then, I've always had a raspy sounding voice was because the scars on my vocal chords. But if I died, and came back, I would brand new. I would wake up not feeling hungry or thirsty. No fatigue. But I will feel emotionally drained from all the magic I can feel. And as the number of druids dwindle, I become stronger. The only way I have been able to use magic for this long without passing out in a day, was because of the druids that are being slaughtered by Morgana's people. Without her, we wouldn't be here at all, yet without her, I would not have been a servant of Prince Arthur." Merlin told them. He looked to Arthur.
"You would be long dead without me, and so would Uther. The kingdom would have died probably before I had the chance to reach my 20th birthday. I also would still be living in Ealdor as a weakling. With Morgana, I would not be magical. I would be stuck in my forever looping misery of self hatred and poverty and abuse. This destiny is all linked because Morgana would be the one to set the stand. She would be the one to go against Uther, to strain your relationship, to bring an army, and to kill you before you become king and free the land of its restrictions. And now I realize, that the destiny my life was set on, was just to lead to this destiny. The destiny where we will win, but at the cost of the downfall of another. And that downfall may very well be you. And that is what I am trying to prevent." Merlin finished. He leaned against the wall, and observed the others.
They all thought for a couple of minutes, but for Merlin it felt like centuries.
"Why did you hide this from us?" Percival asked. Merlin sighed.
"I thought I could live this mirage of normalcy, that I could maybe fool you into believing I am aging with you. So I could live as if you weren't going to die before me, and so I could maybe make myself believe that I will not have to watch you die while I stay healthy."
Merlin stood up from his spot, and walked over to the cliff. He dangled his legs down, and looked over the hills and forests. He could see smoke in the air from the fires in Camelot. He could still feel the negativity from the people.
"Immortality seems like a blissful thing, but it just means you can make friendships and courtships without living your entire life with them. You can never spend an eternity with the one you love, because your eternity with them is longer than their eternity."
Arthur thought of this. He was originally mad at the prospect that Merlin hid this from himself, but he kind of understood why. Arthur walked over to Merlin, and held his hand out to him.
"Stand up." Arthur told him. Merlin reluctantly stood and faced Arthur. Merlin expected a slap to the face, or some yelling. But Arthur just wrapped his arms around Merlin, and held him.
"Everything will be alright. We can work through this. Don't dwell on this little fact." Arthur told him. Merlin didn't look at him, he just hugged him back. Lancelot smiled to the two of them.
"Now don't go making out. There are very innocent men in the room who have a war that needs winning." He joked seriously. Merlin smiled, and let go of Arthur.
"And you are very correct. I feel like we need to call Izusa." Merlin said. The others were curious as to who the person was, but Arthur understood.
"Go on and do your thing. Hopefully she can help us bring the horses down the mountain." Arthur said. He backed up in the tunnel.
"You might want to back up. She'll need room to land." Arthur advised them. Everyone backed up to the back of the cave, and Ebony stood their anxiously.
Merlin walked to the very ledge, and concentrated. He let out a loud dragon call that echoes through the mountains and forests. The men covered their ears as the echo made the sound even more deafening.
Merlin waited for a moment, and soon he saw a small speck rise from the horizon, and fly towards him at top speed. The others finally noticed the small white speck getting larger and larger. They backed up in fear as the beast flew towards them, and landed at the mouth of the cave.
"Is that a dragon!?" Lancelot exclaimed. Arthur and Merlin nodded.
"Now how about we go and win back Camelot?"
