Chapter 3: Hostilities
Lumera was by herself in the Ring Vault. Laughing softly to herself, "how wonderful to see my daughter awake at last. Now, we'll never have to be apart"
She began to think of all the wonderful things she and Veyle can do together, it makes her feel like a silly little kid, "there is so much to catch up on. So much to see and do together! We can catch for hours, take long walks, share meals. And then..." she let out a soft sigh.
She paused for a moment, thinking over the situation. Breaking from her joyful train of thought, "if my daughter's memories are truly lost, I wonder..." she looked to her right, "Emblem Sigurd"
A quick bright light flashed. Sigurd appeared by her side immediately, "I am here"
"There's something I'd like to discuss with you" Lumera's voice when more serious than before. Making Sigurd furor his brows in wonder
~
It was nightfall, Veyle was back in her room where she awoken that morning. She had place the sword and time next to her bed. Ready herself for a well deserved nap. She flop herself onto the bed. Groaning softly, "today was certainly eventful..." she sighed, "I feel like I might pass out.."
She rolled onto her back as she face the top of her bed, "Queen Lumera seems so kind and caring..." she can't help but feel terrible for not remembering her, "I'm sure she was a wonderful mother. If only I could remember those days. I must have felt so lucky to be her daughter..."
Guilt ate at her. It felt like it was holding her by the throat. Gripping her consciousness and shaking it. She felt like a horrible daughter.
She didn't even realize when she fell asleep. All those heavy thoughts must have gotten the better of her.
~
Around Veyle was fire. It was Lythos Castle and everything was burning. She stood in the middle of the room. Instead of her white dress with blue strips in it, she is now wearing a black dress with spikes sticking out of its sides that faded into pink. Her gloves were also black and pink. Instead of having blue lines in her hair, it was replaced with grey. She had chains on her feet and a collar around her neck. She had a crown upon her head that almost look like horns.
She heard footsteps running from behind her. It was Lumera, she could tell by her voice, "why are...you here alone?"
Veyle turned around. A smile on her face that seemed to wicked for her liking. She slowly turned as the flames grew more wild as it spread around her.
~
Veyle woke up with a gasp. She breath heavily as she moved the bedsheets off her. She felt hot and cold at the same time. Shaking in her spot. Sweat dripping of her forehead, "what was that?...W-Was that...me?"
Lucina appeared by her side in an instant, worry clear on her face, as she lean on Veyle's bed, sitting next to her, "are you all right? It looked as though you were having a bad dream"
"Lucina..." Veyle cried out as she went over to the older female. Curling up into her side. Despite Emblems not having a solid form, Veyle just wanted the warm comfort Lucina can bring her.
Lucina gently touched Veyle's head. Her warm hand rubbing up and down upon it. Silently giving comfort to the younger girl.
When Veyle finally seemed to have calmed, she spoke, "you were here the whole time?"
"You were wearing my ring when you went to bed" Lucina laughed softly.
Veyle blushed softly, awkwardly playing with the Emblem Ring on her figure, "I-I'm sorry...I forgot to take it off. You..want me take it off?"
Lucina shock her head, "no, it's all rights keep it on" she moved her hand to Veyle', giving it a squeeze, "if something happens, I will be able to help. Besides, after a millennium together, I would feel uncomfortable if we were separated now"
After another long silence, Veyle spoke up, "Lucina...hay was I like?" The older female tilted her head in confusion, making Veyle clarify, "you know me back then...can you tell me who I wan?"
Lucina paused. She hesitated. Not that Veyle noticed, much to her relief, "well.." she coughed, "you were kind, as you are now. There is no need to remember everything at once. Take your time, Ese back into your memories. Lumera advised that, too, didn't she?"
Veyle frown. She felt bad for asking and putting Lucina under that pressure. She felt selfish for wanting to rush, "yes, she did. Sorry—I don't mean to be impatient"
Lucina shock her head again, she once again rubbed her hand gently onto Veyle's head, "it is all right"
Before any could continue the conversation. A loud explosion was heard in the castle. Making Veyle and Lucina jolt up in surprise.
"What was that?!" Asked Veyle, shaken, as she felt the castle rumble as more explosions went off.
"I'm not sure" Lucina began to float off the bed, "an enemy raid? We had best take a look. I'm worried about Lumera and the others"
Veyle nodded. Hopping off the bed and grabbing the tome and the sword. Both zooming out of the room as fast as they can.
~
Veyle had found Vander, Clanne and Framme near the Ring Vault. Rubble and Corrupted were everywhere.
"Vander! Clanne! Framme!" Veyle cried out to the trio.
Vander sighed in relief when he saw Veyle, "ah, Divine One! Thank goodness you're safe"
"What's happening?" Veyle asked. Her main question was 'where is Lumera?'.
They faced the Ring Vault. There seemed to be a battle going on in there.
Framme faced Veyle, clearly shaken up, "some enemies busted right through the castle walls like paper. Suddenly, BAM! They're here!"
Clanne nodded, "what's worded they fought their way into the Ring Vault. If you ask me, they're trying to get their hands on the Emblem Rings!"
Veyle gasped. She eyes Lucina's ring. Her worse fear is being separated from Lucina.
"Even as we speak, Queen Lumera is defending the vault" Vander informed Veyle, who suddenly got more worried, "Quickly! We must fly to her aid!"
"Sounds like a plan. Follow me!" Veyle orders as she grabbed her light tome.
The group head forward. Defeating enemies along the way. The more they defeat, the more it felt like they spawn.
What Veyle had notice, is that they seem to be human. Not the Corrupted. They had green and silver armor.
Veyle used spikes made of light, aiming down at armored soldiers as she took them down. She breathed heavily before sending a beam of light at a foe, "there are too many of them. We'll never make it to the Ring Vault..."
Suddenly, Veyle heard muffled voices from the other side of the room behind them, "Through this door, right?"
A muffled female voice spoke next, "Yes. This is the one"
"Then let's go" another male voice spoked muffled through the door.
"I hear voices. Someone's coming" Veyle told Vander, Framme and Clanne. She wonder if it was more enemies.
The door burst open and a white horse ran in. A male that looked to be in his early 20s came riding in on top of it. He had blonde hair and green eyes. He wore a white clothes and a blue cape. A flower crown on his head. He also had a spear in his hands.
He hopped off the horse, "made it! And not a moment too soon..." he looked around before swinging his lance around, "The Crown Prince Alfred of Firene is here to help. Let me at 'em!"
Two people appeared next to him. A muscular man with brown hair and a axe and a short woman with orange hair with a bow. Both looked to be around his age.
"Prince Alfred of...Firene, you said?" Asked Veyle as she turned her attention to the new guys.
Alfred, the newcomer, gasped when he saw Veyle, "Could it be? Are you the Divine Dragon Veyle? You finally woke up?!"
Veyle gave a wary smile, "I-I did, yes" she nodded.
Alfred let out a joyful laugh, "that's amazing! You know, I've waited ages for this to happen. There's so much to take about" he then rubbed the back of his head, "Later, of course. After we've taken care of these scoundrels. Who are they, anyways?"
"We're not sure. They attack so suddenly" Veyle informed Alfred.
Alfred nodded in understanding, "Well, let's go this quickly—pin down whoever's in charge and get some answers" he heard the orange hair woman cough to get his attention, Alfred blinked before realizing, "oh, these are my retainers, Etie and Boucheron. From now on, consider us at your disposal. Lead the way, Divine One!"
Veyle smiled and nodded, "Thank you for your help"
Etie gave a small wave towards Veyle, "it is a honor to meet, Divine One. My arrows are perfect for knocking airborne enemies out of the sky. With these muscles, I'll have those filers dropping like flies!"
Boucheron gave a nod as he held his axe, "Sorry for not introducing myself sooner. It I'm near an enemy you're fighting, I can jump in and land another hit on them. Call on me if you need some extra oomph"
"Thank you both" Veyle smiled and nodded. She find use in an Archer and a back up unit. Boucheron will work well with Lucina's engage ability.
The tides seem to turn in Veyle's group's favor. All the enemies seemed to drop like flies. The leader of the group created the most trouble for them.
"I have orders, no one reaches the vault!" The leader growls as she began to swing her axe at Veyle.
Boucheron jumped in front of Veyle, protecting her from the attack.
Veyle gave her nod as thanks, moving to the side and gartering light energy and lunch at the leader, making her be send back.
Framme and Clanne attack next. Framme send in some punches, but they were not as effective as magic since the leader is an armored unit.
Clanne used fire magic when Framme moved out of the way in time. Which was super effective.
The leader manage to get a solid hit on Framme, due to her being the closest to her.
"Framme, fall back" Veyle ordered. The Pink girl nodded as she went to the back of the group to heal up.
Veyle went over to Framme. She began ti use her tome to summoned a light blue energy and aimed it at Framme, manage to heal the girl.
"The Divine One just healed me" Framme fangirled. Squealing slightly in her place/
Veyle giggled slightly. "Rest up a bit.." she patted Framme's shoulder before heading back to the front lines.
The leader is now on her last leg. Vander and the others already taken a lot of her heath. Panting heavily. She won't back down.
"Do not suffer..." Veyle said softly as she began to finish the job. She charge up a beam of holy light and send it at the leader. Finishing off the leader in a quick and painless death.
It seemed all the enemies were defeated. The group took some a quick breather.
"Looks like we cleared the way. Let's get to the Ring Vault!" Veyle ordered, wanting to know if Lumera is okay.
The group rushed inside. There was a woman in a cloaked figure. She seemed to be around the same age as Alfred. She had pale skin and she could see a bit of ruby red hair sticking out but that is all what Veyle could make out.
Veyle pulled out the sword Lumera had gave her at the hooded figured, "whoever it is you are, the rest of your forces have been defeated. So surrender now. If you refuse, I will stop you"
"Hm.." the woman stared at her for a good while before pulling out her sword, she moved so fast as she kicked Veyle and quickly disarmed Veyle, making her gasp in shock as she send flying back onto the floor, "do I detect a hint of fear?"
"Time to die..." the woman said as she raised her steel sword and aimed it at Veyle.
"Look out!" Lumera ran and jump in front of Veyle, taking the slash Veyle. Making her cry out in pain and Veyle cried out in surprise and fear as she saw Lumera's blood splashed everywhere.
Lumera fell back into Veyle's arms. Veyle stared at Lumera in worry before looking at the hooded figure, who stood there. She and Veyle made eye contact for a few moments. Veyle couldn't tell but the hooded figure's face twisted in recognition before falling back to her normal stoic expression.
The hooded figure raised her hand, a black glove with a bit of gold on it was shown from under the long sleeve, "hand over the rings"
Lumera glared at the hooded figure, "leave here at once!" She raised her hand and summoned all the energy she can and shot a beam at the figure, who only barely dodge the attack.
The hooded figure hissed softly before begin to run off. Dropping a small crystal in the halls.
Veyle hold Lumera in her arms. Tears staining her eyes. It didn't help when she say Lumera also shed a tear.
Lumera weakly raise her hand to touch Veyle's face. Gently whipping the tears from her eyes.
"No..." Veyle said, her voice trembling at the sight.
"Here. Queen Lumera! I'll fix you up!" Framme ran forward as she used her staff to heal Lumera. Green energy formed around the Divine Dragon but the wound didn't disappear, "huh?!"
"What's the matter?" Veyle asked as she turned to Veyle, "why didn't it work?!"
"My staff isn't helping her. She's hurt really bad, and..." Framme shake. She realized what is going on, "it's her Divine Dragon powers—they're almost totally whipped out!"
Veyle turned her attention back to Lumera, eyes widen in shock, "how..?"
"A Divine Dragon losing their power...it's the same as losing years of their life" Framme explains to Veyle, "the thing is, there's no reason Queen Lumera should be drained like this. It doesn't make any sense!"
"It's simple, my young one..." Lumera spoke to Veyle, "I gave my power unto you"
Veyle stopped breathing for a moment, "but...but why?"
"All the years you were sleeping...healing....i was transferring my Divine Dragon powers to you" Lumera gave Veyle a weak smile, "I hoped it would be enough to bring you back to me someday. But now, it would seem that I am completely spent"
Veyle's heart almost stopped. It's her fault. Her fault. Her fault. Her fault, "no...no...I did this!"
"No, my dear...you have to push those thoughts away" Lumera shock her head, gently rubbed Veyle's cheek, "these is nothing a mother wouldn't do...to see life return again...to her beloved child"
"But I..." Veyle tried to argue.
Lumera had removed Sigurd's ring. Slowly handing it to Veyle, "this ring...it belongs in o you now...The Ring of the Holy Knight. I had...so hoped to give you the ring I made, as well...but that's not possible now..."
Veyle had taken the ring. The silver color shimmered in the dark room. Sliding it onto her finger next to Lucina's.
"Listen to me, child..." Lumera gained Veyle's attention again, "Thise who invaded here...I sensed the power of the Fell Dragon within them"
The room fell silence with dread. The news weighed heavy on the group.
"You must not allow them to capture any more of the rings" Lumera had informed Veyle, "please...I beg of you...Gather together all the 12 rings. And...when your scattered memories return to you, you must fight on with utmost divinity. I believe in you, my daughter!"
"I understand. I'll collect the rings. I swear to you!" Veyle promised, "and I'll fight. I'll do whatever you want. But please...don't leave me..." she saw the light fading from Lumera's eyes, "Mama!"
Lumera gave a smile, one of sadness and joy, "Ah...Ah, young one...how I've longed to hear you call me that....All those years...I held out hope. My heart is fuller than you could ever know."
Veyle's voice trembled more, "it can't end like this. You were going to give me that ring once my memories come back...you promised! And there....there are so many things you haven't told me yet! You said that we would talk!"
Lumera spoke softly, "I did...there's still so much I wanted to say to you...being your mother—becoming your mother—has brought me so much happiness into my life"
"I know..." Veyle lower her voice, her tears dripping onto Lumera's face, "and I'm happy to be your daughter, in this moment—here and now—and a thousand years ago. I am. Don't go...Stay with me until I remember again. Please, Mama—I need more time!"
Framme looked away. Hiding her face in her hands to hide her tears. Clanne held her shoulder as his own tears threaten to spill.
Lumera gave a weak laugh, "oh, my sweet one...Now, let's make a promise...Mother and daughter...we'll make it a pink promise. I swear to you..." she raised her pinky to Veyle, the younger dragon locked her pinky with Lumera's, "I'll be with you always and forever. And the ring, remember....Once you've rested...we will talk...you and I..."
Lumera's finger fell out of Veyle's. Her hands limping, one to her side and the other to her stomach. Onto her open wound.
"Mama...?" Veyle's body trembled as she saw her hands fall. She looked to see Lumera closed her eyes as her body went limp.
Veyle's heart dropped as she began to shake Lumera, "No! Please!"
Vander stood the back. Eyes widen as he felt like the world around him crumble, "this simply cannot have happened...Queen Lumera..."
"The Divine Dragon Queen...she has left us" Alfred softly spoke. He couldn't help but stare at Veyle in pity and sadness.
"Mama, please wake up..." Veyle's body trembled begged as her cries filled the silent room, "you promised you stay by my side...you have to....you have to keep your promise!"
~
Time felt so still. Was it minutes? Hours? Days? Veyle couldn't tell anymore. She felt so broken, lost. She sat on the ground, holding her knees close to her chest. Everyone surrounded her, Even Sigurd and Lucina were out of their rings.
Silence had filled the room until Veyle spoke in a quiet, weak tone, "thank you for helping with Mama's funeral..."
Vander nodded his head to Veyle, "it was the final service we could provide Queen Lumera as stewards"
Framme sniffed, whipping the tears offer face, "I can't believe she's gone"
Clanne did his best not to cry, but it's clear he wanted to very bad, "C'mon, Framme. Think how hard this must be on the Divine Dragon. We gotta hold it together"
"I'm trying, but..." Framme broke down in Clanne's arms.
Lucina stared off. Letting out a shaky breath, "Lumera, I never thought out paths would diverge so soon" she didn't have it in her to cry. Her heart so use to death and lose.
"Nor I. And I leave a child behind. I did that in death....a bitter memory" Sigurd said as he remembered the bitter memories of his final moments in flames. He looked up into the sky as he placed a hand over his heart, "I vow to protect your offspring in your absence, Lumera"
"If we could grant our power now..." Lucina noted.
Sigurd turned to her, he wanted to as well but he knew the cost, "Lucina. You know that's not possible without the other Emblems here"
"Yes, yes, I know" Lucina gave a weak nods
"This is awful. Sorry i couldn't have done...something" Alfred told the group as he bawled his fists.
"No, Prince Alfred. Without you, our losses may have been even greater" Vander shock his head, "though I must ask, why did you come? Was there something you needed?"
"Our kingdom is in danger. My mother send me to ask Queen Lumera for help" Alfred informed, "all over Firene, our people are being attack by these...these creatures"
"Creatures?" Veyle snapped her gaze up at Alfred as she immediately stood, "what kind of creature?"
Alfred paused to recall before speaking, "there things are like people, but...cracked, almost crumbling"
Veyle felt a shiver up her spine, "The Corrupted..."
"Oh, so that's what you call them" Alfred took a mental note of that.
"Yes. Corpses brought back to life" Veyle explained.
"No wonder they wouldn't listen to us" Alfred said, "they just keep attacking everything. We send our knights out to hold them off, but it's a losing battle. My kingdom is being destroyed. Divine one....will you help us? Please, come with me to Firene"
Veyle paused. She was unsure, "what can I do? It was Mama's help you want. Not mine"
"Queen Lumera is gone. You're the last Divine Dragon. We need the power of the rings ti save Firene. And only you can do that" Alfred said to Veyle. He sensed her uncertainty. Feeling guilty, he said, "Sorry. I don't mean to press the topic. I'll return to Firene. We'll...do what we can"
After a while, Veyle cried out, "wait...I'm coming with you"
Alfred's eyes brighten up, "you will?!"
"I don't want more families to be torn apart—more people to suffer" Veyle said, "even if I'm scared, I have to push through my fear. Now that mama is gone, it's my duty to step into the role of Divine Dragon. And if kingdom is protecting rings. I take it Firene has one, correct?"
Alfred nodded in confirmation, "Correct"
"Then I need to go there anyways to honor mama's request" Veyle said, "she asked me to gather all of the rings and bring peace back to Elyos. As the Divine Dragon, I officially accepted the kingdom of Firene's request for aid"
"That's great to hear!" Alfred smiled brightly, "thank you, Divine One"
"Happy to help, Prince Alfred" Veyle blushed and smiled back.
"Just 'Alfred' is fine" Alfred shock his head, "I've been visiting you at the Somniel since I was a boy. I think nod you as...an old friend. A very, very old friend"
"I...appreciate that?" Veyle didn't know to feel about that, "I don't remember anything before I fell asleep"
Alfred looked surprised, "nothing?"
"This world is new to me" Veyle said, "I appreciate having friends who can teach me about it. If that's okay with you?"
Alfred gave a kind smile and nodded, "I'll do my best. Can't say I'll know much compared to Queen Lumera, but I'll try"
"Thank you, Alfred" Veyle smiled.
Lucina and Sigurd smiled fondly at the scene, especially Lucina. She was glad Veyle was making friends. It warmed her heart to see Veyle smile so warmly after seeing her so heartbroken not to long ago.
