Day at the Fair (Part Two)

Another quick clarification, this is the fair day told from Roman and Virgil's' perspective.
It's also full of sappy, cringe romance so brace yourselves.
And a massive THANK YOU from me because oh my lord you guys are AWESOME!   I am super self critical so seeing that you guys are actually liking what I love to do really means a lot to some one with little to no self confidence... it makes my day to read any comments about the story so thank you!

(Roman's POV)

I sat on Logan and Virgil's couch in their apartment while I waited for Virgil to get ready.  I was surprisingly nervous for today.  It wasn't Virgil and I's first date or anything, but we hadn't actually spent a whole day together since the day we first found out we were soul mates and that had gone awfully.  Well, not awful but he barely said anything and I was just awkwardly trying to start conversation.

I watched my leg bounce as I contemplated if I made the right choice in going full cliche sappy romantic with Virgil.  He was really cute with freckles and I did want today to go well, but I don't exactly know if that's what he wanted to hear.  From the short time that I've known him, none of my romantic gestures seemed to be working.  He barely talks during dinners.  He doesn't seem to like any movies.  And I'm pretty sure he's allergic to flowers so that's out too.  The only time I can seem to get to know him at all is when he texts me at 2:00 in the morning when he can't sleep.  I'm fine with staying up despite it showing the next day, but I wish he would open up to me in person too.

I was so lost I  thought that I didn't even notice Virgil walk into the living room.  He cleared his throat to snap me out of them.  I looked at my soulmate to see him wearing blue jeans and a purple t-shirt with an open zip up MCR hoodie.  It barely took me a second to see that he wasn't wearing any makeup.  I felt a smile tug on my lips and noticed a light pink dusting Virgil's cheeks.    He looked down and tried to hide his face with his bangs.

"Don't look at me like that."  Virgil mumbled just loud enough for me to hear.

"Like what?"  I asked, my smile growing, and tilted my head to the side.  But his response wiped any trace of a smile off my face.

"Like I'm worth something." He said bluntly.  I blinked as I tried to pull something to say together.

"Why would you think you're not worth anything?"  I asked, trying to be gentle and not push him farther away.

"Because I'm not.  I don't know what I'm doing with my life and I'm too scared to try and figure it out.  I'm the emo who never grew up and still calls their roommate at work when they have panic attacks.  I don't contribute anything to anyone.  If anything I'm a burden.  I'm... worthless.  Always have been..."  Virgil looked down and I noticed my soul  gem turn dark red.

"Bullshit."   I stated.  Virgil's head snapped up and he looked at me in confusion.

"What?"

"I said bullshit.  Just because you don't know exactly what you want to do in the future doesn't make you dumb.  Just because you wear makeup and like to dress in all black doesn't make you worthless.  Just because you have anxiety and sometimes you need help.."  I stood up and put my hands on his shoulders, "that doesn't make you a burden Virgil."  He met my eyes before turning away and started walking towards the door.  "

I felt my heart flying in my chest.  I was making so many risky moves today and I do not know how much of it I can take.  First showing up at his apartment with out him knowing (in my defense Logan set that up, I thought Virgil knew), then asking him to go out of his comfort zone, then I accidentally looked at him wrong and ended up in a deep conversation about self worth.  Normally I'm able to keep a confident persona, but trying to get through to this man is going to be the death of me.

"Calm down," Virgil says.  I stare at him wide-eyed trying to understand what I did wrong.  Virgil turned to face me with his soul gem in his hand.  "I've put together that orange means you're nervous.  I'm not upset with you.  Just.... processing," I gulped.  Virgil smirked before walking over and grabbing my hand, dragging me out the door with him, "We'd better get going, Logan said to meet him in a half hour.  It's after 11, we were supposed to be there ten minutes ago"

We walked down the sidewalk until we got to the park.  Most of the walk was spent in silence until we were only a little ways away from the park.  The entire way I had been playing the stupid, nervous, flirty boyfriend and would occasionally trying to brush my hand against Virgil's until he eventually said, "Ya know you could just grab my hand right?  You don't need to test if it will explode or something,"  and grabbed my hand.  I felt myself turn red before laughing and squeezing his hand back.

"And here I was thinking you hated me or something,"  I said and laughed nervously.

"Nah, you are pretty dorkish and can go way over the top sometimes, but you've been nothing but good to me,"  Virgil replied.  I looked down and smiled slightly in relief.  "Besides, I'm too lazy to hate you, takes up too much energy,"  he said playfully.

"Thank goodness I prevented you from drinking your coffee this morning then huh?"  I laughed and gave him a shove.

"No way Princey, I am still getting my coffee, I'll just have to get it later, and you're paying." He shoved me back.

"Princey?"  I asked him, Virgil just shrugged, " I like it.  I mean it fits,"  I tugged at my Disney tank top.

"I know it fits or I wouldn't have called you it, dork," Virgil said playfully.

"Yeah, I'll stick with Princey, My Chemical Romance,"

"I am honored," Virgil feigned excitement with a laugh and his free hand pressed to his chest.  I squeezed his hand a bit, and he squeezed back.

When did Virgil become so willing to talk to me? No way in hell was it because of my sappy speech earlier.  Was it?  I've given sappy speeches to a lot of the boys and girls that I've dated in the past, and they just seem to push them farther away.  No way did it actually pay off with Virgil.  As if on cue Virgil spoke up.

"What you said earlier, about today.  Do you really think it only takes a day to prove that the soulm-- that we work?"  Virgil glanced at me sideways, I couldn't tell whether he looked sad or hopeful.

I sighed, "I hope so," I answered quietly, "I've come to like you a lot in the last half hour, but I also have liked you since you said 'disney is my shit' before our first date,"  Virgil was looking back at the ground, seeming to be trying to process what I was saying.  "I tend to do that,"  I paused and Virgil glanced up at me, "my heart seems to fall faster than my head can keep up, and it's not always a good thing,"  I smiled weakly, "I get that dating is never a permanent thing in our world, ya know with our partners being predetermined and everything, but I still gave everything I had to anyone who dated me.  It always seemed to be one-sided and I understand why, but it'd be nice to hear someone say 'I love you' back once and a while," I took a deep breath and blew it out,  "I really hope you learn to like me, Virge.  I'm the stockphoto for hopeless romantic, but managing to be too much for my soul mate would really suck," I finished.

"Bullshit,"  Virgil said.  It kinda felt like a punch to the gut.  I've given sappy speeches, but they're usually not about myself and that wasn't exactly the response I was hoping for.

"W-what?" I asked, hurt and desperate for an explanation.

"There's no way that no one said 'I love you ' to you.  You must have been dating some pretty shit people because you are the-" he was cut off by his cellphone buzzing.  I internalized a groan.  He was going to say something.  I don't know if it was good or bad, but it was something.  Virgil looked at his phone and typed out a response to whatever it said.

"Logan says he got held up at the library and is a little late," Virgil read off.

"That's fine, we're late too.  What would be closest to both of us?  We can ask him to meet us there."

"Well he's at the north gate, so the closest landmark that meets in the middle would probably be the petting zoo,"

"Sweet, let's get to the petting zoo," and we did.  It wasn't really a long walk and we just looked a the animals while we waited for Logan.   We were at the duck pond when he walked up behind us.

"Salutations Virgil, Roman,"  he nodded to each of us.

"Alright are we all ready to roll?"  I asked, bubbly with excitement to get on some rollercoasters.

"You two need to meet Patton," Logan stated and I squealed.

"He's here already?!  I thought you were meeting him later," I was jumping, ready to meet him.

"We ran into each other at the library," Logan said flatly.

"Oh so that's why you got held up," I winked and wiggled my eyebrows.  Logan turned bright red and Virgil tried and failed to stifle a laugh.

"Technically yes," Logan responded, "but not for whatever you're thinking," he pointed a finger at Virgil and me.

I put my hands up defensively, "Hey, I didn't say anything specifically.  Get your mind out of the gutter!" I teased.  Logan sighed and rubbed his brow.

"Patton's over there," Logan said as he pointed to the goat pen.  Picked out who he was pretty quickly (the only other people were two little girls and an elderly couple).

"EEk, I'll be right back,"  I told the two and darted off to make a new friend.

(Virgil's POV)

I watched Roman run off to greet Patton, and Logan stepped to my side.  We stood for a moment before I hit him in the arm.  He flinched and glared at me, rubbing his shoulder.

"Was that really necessary?"  Logan groaned.

"Yes,"  I snapped.  "How could you leave me alone and not even close to ready with Roman?"  I shot at him.

"You were teaming up on me and I wanted out.  What you did after was no longer my problem,"  Logan stated flatly.  "Besides, everything seemed to have worked out fine.  You two already look more comfortable in the last hour than you have in the week you've known each other,"  Logan pointed out.  I opened my mouth to argue, closed it, argued with my self, then proceeded to answer him.

"Ok yeah, it didn't go terrible,"  I said and Logan smiled smugly at me and I jabbed a finger at him before continuing, "BUT.  It could have.  and you are not forgiven for leaving me to face that possible situation."  I huffed as I crossed my arms.

"Even if it did go horribly wrong, you two would make up just fine,"  Logan argued.  I raised my eyebrows doubtfully.  Logan rolled his eyes and further explained, "You're bound to, you two are soulmates after all."  I frowned.

"What happened to you not believing in all of this stuff anyway?"  I accused.  Logan shrugged.

"It's true that there's no physical evidence, but statistically speaking it's bound to work.  Centuries of people being perfectly matched makes it hard to counter,"  Logan reasoned.

"Or Patton believes in it and he's gotten to you,"  I rolled my eyes and smirked at Logan.  Logan just frowned.

"No."  He shook his head, "No, that's ridiculous.  When have I ever let anyone influence my opinions on science?"  He frowned at me.  I shrugged with a cheeky smile.

"Patton isn't just anyone, he's Patton.  He's also the first person you've actually come home talking about and continued to meet on your own time.  He's the first person to ever get past your big words and actually reach you,"  I argued back.  I was mostly doing it to rile Logan up, but he actually seemed to stop and ponder this.  He just hummed in response and my eyes widened. "Wait.  You actually like him, don't you?"  I asked surprised.  Logan's head snapped up.

"No, I don't.  That's preposterous.  Why would I like him?"  Logan responded sharply.

"Ok first of all, ouch for Patton.  What do you mean why would you like him?  He's not a bad guy,"  I said in disbelief.  Logan groaned and covered his hands with his face.

"That's not what I meant.  I mean why would I like him if he's not my soulmate.  It has nothing to do with him being wrong, it's the fact that it's doomed not to last," Logan reasoned.  I blew out a breath and looked at the ground.

"You do.  You like him and can't accept it,"  I tried wrapping my head around it.  Logan finding a partner would be the best thing that could happen to him, but him finally trying to open up his emotions and it not working out... it would just shut him up again.  I looked back up at Logan just to see him looking at the ground.  "Listen, Logan.. just because it might not last forever, doesn't mean it can't be an amazing experience.  He could make you happy and open a new chapter of even greater happiness for you.  If you do like him, give it a shot.  See where it goes, don't just shut him out and close yourself off."  I said softly, trying not to push him too hard.

Logan drew in a breath, exhaled, raked a hand through his hair, and stood up straighter.  "No.  That's ridiculous.  I've told you, Patton isn't anything more than a friend to keep me company at work," he said sounding more to himself than to me.  He started to walk over to Roman and Patton and I trailed slightly behind him before catching up.

Shut the fuck up Logan, swallow your pride and open your eyes. Just take down your god damn walls for a moment.  I wanted to say-no yell at him.  But it wouldn't help, and I felt bad.  The dude's been a robot for years, and liking someone without being able to see a future is a rough way to be introduced back into emotions.

Meeting Patton was a pleasure, he was just as friendly as Logan said he was.  We teased them a bit more and decided to split up for a while before dinner.  Roman and I made our way to the coffee stand before going on the bumper cars, and once we were out of earshot of Logan and Patton I groaned and covered my face with my hands.

"Shhhit,"  I breathed and jammed my hands into my pockets.  Roman looked at me in alarm.

"What?  What's wrong?"  He asked, concern lacing his voice.

"Logan likes Patton,"  I answered, looking at him with my eyebrows furrowed.  Roman just laughed and rolled his eyes.

"Well duh, did you not see them.  He'd be stupid to not like him," Roman laughed and tried to put an arm around me, but I squirmed away and started walking backwards to face him as I waved my arms to help express the predicament.

"No.  Like he actually likes him,"  I stressed.  Roman seemed more confused.

"Great.  Good.  That's what we wanted isn't it?"  Roman asked.  Hopeful, but getting increasingly more confused by the look of it.

"Well yes, but Logan doesn't get it. He doesn't view dating and emotions and soulmates like everyone else does. He doesn't think dating is worth the time if you already know it's not going to last. If he finds these emotions as a distraction or unnecessary, he's just going to repress them and tear himself apart over it,". Part of me felt bad for just letting Roman in on this part of my roommate, but I needed help and even more Logan needed help, so if Roman could offer anything to either of us, I was willing to let him know about it. Besides, I don't think Roman would do anything that would hurt anyone over this.

"Oh," was Roman's only response for a while. I groaned and turned around so I was once again walking side by side with him instead of in front of him. "Did you tell him that it can be worth it?" Roman questioned.

"Yes! Of course I did,". I whined.

"Ok, how did the conversation actually go down?"

"What?" I didn't quite grasp why he was asking. I looked at him, expecting a bit of an explanation. Roman went a bit pink, but complied.

"Sorry if that's too much. I just get a better read on situations when I know all the context. Sorry if it seems snoopy. I just.. I really do want to help." I stared at him for a moment and then cleared my throat.

"Well, basically we started talking because I hit him on the arm for leaving me alone with you," I saw Roman open his mouth and I jumped to explain, "It's fine! This morning was fine! I just hit him for leaving me with the possibility of something going wrong,". I inwardly cringed as I realized this probably didn't sound much better. Roman frowned a bit, but then nodded and let me continue. I blew out a breath, "So then he went on about how we were soulmates and that even if something went wrong it wouldn't matter because we'd be bound to make up, ya know, 'cause we're soulmates or whatever," I looked at Roman who nodded in understanding, "I started teasing him about soulmates and what made him think they were real. Because he never has, there's never been anything to prove them legitimate so he's never believed them," Roman frowned at this, but I ignored him and continued, "he went on about statistics or something like that," Roman put a finger up to silence me. I frowned and opened my mouth to protest, but he spoke first.

"One large, iced americano and one medium, caramel frappe please," he said.

"What?" I snapped, very confused until I looked around and saw we had reached the little coffee kiosk. I hadn't even noticed. What did Roman get me? I wasn't paying attention. We got our drinks and I took a sip of my americano and noticed a bit of cinnamon to it. I wasn't complaining.

Roman finished taking a long slurp of his and waved his hand at me. "Continue," he said.

I shook my head to clear my thoughts, "Right. Anyway, so he was talking about statistics and history or something, and I teased him about Patton. Something about him changing Logan's views on soulmates or whatever, and of course Logan denied this, so I just continued pressing about Patton. That's what we do!" I said, exasperated, gesturing to myself and Roman. Roman nodded and hummed through the straw of his coffee. "Here's when it got weird, I said that Patton was the first person to ever reach Logan's personal side in less than a week, and he actually seemed to think about this! I mean he just shut up.  Which he never does if he has a reason to argue with what's been said.  I kinda pieced it together and asked him if he liked Patton. I told him that it could be worth it and to not shut down, but that's exactly what he did! He just told me I was ridiculous and then walked away to go talk to you and Patton!" I finished my story and took a long sip of my iced coffee.

"Do you think Patton likes Logan?" Roman asked.

"Yeah I would think so! But then again Patton just seems like an all around loving guy! I can't really tell for sure," I answered.

"Ok here's what I suggest," Roman said as he threw away his empty cup in a trash bin we were passing. Jesus Christ that was fast. I was barely three sips in to my drink. " I say that we see how today goes. If tonight Patton and Logan still are acting like a couple, we'll keep pushing for it. Not nearly as much though. We don't want to push Logan away, but we can't drop it completely. Do you think you can get Patton's number off of Logan later?" He paused for my response. I thought quickly before nodding, Logan leaves his phone in the living room often enough and I know his password. "Great. I need you to give it to me. We can't just keep pushing at Logan without knowing how the other side feels. I'll ask him to meet me for lunch or something and I'll try and learn some things about him," I nodded, Roman continued, "For now I would say we just relax and enjoy the day. Logan's tough. He's not going to let his emotions break him in a day," Roman looked at me for approval.

"Mm 'k," I hummed. "But if Logan does explode by tonight, I'm blaming you, got it?" I jabbed. Roman laughed in his response.

"I'll take my chances," he grinned. I huffed and grabbed his hand, content to just let them swing between us as we walked to the bumper cars.

We approached the line and I threw my cup, which was now just filled with ice, into the trash near the ticket lady. I was still worried about Logan, but decided to take a breath and focus on destroying my soulmate in bumper cars. We got our tickets and climbed in, just a few cars apart from each other. I glanced over at Roman to see him settling into his purple car. I was in a green and yellow one. Roman's legs seemed to be too long for the cars, his knees bent and twisted oddly. I laughed and appreciated my shortness for a little bit. Once he was settled he looked over at me grinning; I stuck out my tongue at him and the buzzer sounded.

Roman headed right towards me, but I turned to try and head around him. It wouldn't have worked with how slow the cars were going, but Roman trying to plow through children and their parents' cars slowed him down even more. I cackled as he watched me pull up behind him, he wasn't moving because he's trapped between three little kids' cars who were more than happy to repeatedly slam into him and each other. I joined the kids and bumped into Roman. He twisted around to see me and glared playfully. He quickly gave up on being nice to the kids and pushed through them to turn around and bump into me. We ran into each other a few more times before I made my escape. We drove through the ring running into others as we chased each other laughing and shrieking as we went.

It was fun. Not something I say much, but I did. When we finished the ride I told Roman "that was fun," his response was a laugh, a nod, and a yup. I don't think he gets how little I say that. We headed to the roller coasters and rode almost all of them. I enjoyed those too, I laughed and shrieked occasionally while Roman screamed at the top of his lungs the entire time.

We only had a few left to do when we decided to take a break. We grabbed lemonade and some nachos and sat down at a nearby picnic table. We both chipped away at the nachos, but downed the lemonade pretty quickly.

"I'm going for seconds on the lemonade. You want some?" Roman asked me while he stood up. I nodded and he grabbed my glass and headed to the giant lemon shaped stand. I continued at the nachos; the cheese was basically plastic and the jalapeños had little kick to them, but I nibbled at them anyway. When Roman got back he set the fresh glass of lemonade in front of me and sat back down on the bench opposite me. Roman sipped on his lemonade, but just watched me eat the nachos. I stopped.

"You know you can eat them too right?" I told him.

Yeah I know," Roman said and he reached for a chip, "just taking in the view," he said before eating the nacho.

I looked behind me, "The teacup ride, the lemon, or the lady feeding pigeons," I asked.

Roman rolled his eyes, "You, stupid."

I flushed red and shrank it my seat, "Oh," I mumbled.

"Is it working?"  Roman laughed.  I tilted my head.

"Is what working?"  I puzzled.

"Us.  Has today been worth it to you?"  He responded.

I paused and stared at him, trying to choose my next words.  I guess I took too long because Roman seemed to shrink and the light in his eyes faltered for a moment. "Definitely."  I said.  Roman perked up and I noticed the corner of his lips lifted slightly.

"Really?" He said like he didn't believe me.

I sighed, "Roman, you haven't done anything wrong since the moment we met, or even shown me a glimpse that you might."

"I called you an emo nightmare," he said flatly.

"Ok besides that.  And that was harmless and pretty accurate actually," Roman frowned and opened his mouth, "Princey, I'm about as emo as it gets," I said before he could say anything.

"You're not a nightmare," he muttered under his breath, but I heard him.

"This morning you did more for me than any of the guys I've dated combined.  I was a burden to them, and you told me I wasn't in the most beautiful way possible."  Roman's ears went pink and I smiled, "As difficult as I've made it for you, I'm falling for you faster than I care to admit."  I finished and held my breath, praying that I didn't go too far.  We sat on silence for a good minute, both of us probably pinker than our soul gems' when we met.

"Finish your lemonade, get up, and we're going to finish those last two rides.  Then I'm gonna go win you a  fucking bear or something," Roman finally said while jumping to his feet.  He wasn't any less red, but he looked like he was on a mission.

"O-ok?"  I said hesitantly and finished the lemonade.  We threw the little bit of nachos away and walked towards the line to the Power Tower.  We were both quiet for while as we stood in line.  Then Roman spoke up.

"So are... are we?  Like us... we're?" Roman stumbled on his words; his voice was incredibly squeaky and high pitched.

"Spit it out Princey."  I pressed.

"Can we be like..." he paused and I raised my eyebrows, "boyfriends?  Officially?  Put a label on it?  You're mine, I'm yours? No one else's?  Not leaving each other?"  He choked out rubbing the back of his neck.

I grabbed his hand making our gems ignite into bright pink.  "I didn't know you thought leaving was an option," I smirked.  Roman flushed and started trying to stammer out a response. I'd be willing to bet my soul that Roman's gem would be a brighter orange than fire if it wasn't currently occupied by glowing pink.  I pulled his hand around my shoulder and I nuzzled into his, "I'm teasing you, Princey." Roman blew out a breath and squeezed me a bit tighter and then relaxed.

We got into our seats on the ride and secured ourselves before the ride attendants came around and checked everyone to make sure we were all fastened and safe. It was a ride straight up and our feet dangled below us as we went higher and higher into the sky. When we got to the top of the tower the ride stopped and slowly rotated around, allowing everyone a view of the fair and park below us. I reveled in it. I loved seeing the park below us filled with people that looked like ants now, I loved seeing the city line on the horizon, and I loved the quiet.

"Nice view, huh Princey?" I turned my neck to see him. He was nodding, but was pale as a ghost and his eyes were wide. Was he scared of heights? Part of me felt terrible for having him on all of the rides all day. If he was scared of heights today could not have been nearly as fun for him as it was for me. The other part of me thought it was adorable. I hate to admit it, but Princey's pretty cute when he's flustered.

When the ride came full circle and we were looking back at the view that we had before the platform had started rotating, it stopped. We were still in the air for maybe two seconds, and then we were falling. I giggled at the feeling in my stomach that you get when you're in an elevator. Roman was not giggling. He was screaming, loudly. It didn't surprise me since he had screamed at the same volume for every ride before this one too. I can't believe he still has a voice. We fell about half way to the ground and then the seats shot back up. It dropped us and caught us and shot us back up a few times. Roman screamed the whole time. It finally slowed down and brought us to the ground. I skipped up next to Roman.

"How ya doing Princey?" I asked smiling innocently.

"M fine," he squeaked.

"Don't worry, it's just the ferris wheel next,"

"Splendid," Roman sighed.

As it turns out, Roman did not find it splendid. He was fine for the most part but whenever we went over the top of the wheel, he turned pale and his knuckles turned white from grabbing at the railings. At one point in the ride, the wheel stopped us while we were at the top. Nothing to worry about, ferris wheels do this all the time so passengers can sit and enjoy the view. By the looks of it, Roman couldn't care less about the view, as his eyes were now squeezed shut.

"Roman, it's all right. You're ok," I attempted to comfort him and rubbed his arm (which made him jump). "You know you didn't have to come on right?"

"Yeah, yeah I know, but you seemed to enjoy the rides so much," he said shakily.

"I didn't want you actually panicking over them though. I had no idea you were so afraid of heights," I was still rubbing his arm trying to console him. Roman opened his eyes now.

"Yeah... I think I passed out on that one," Roman pointed at a tall red roller coaster behind us.

"Roman! You have to say if you don't want to go on them!" he had passed out, seriously passed out.

"It's fine. I'm fine. Everything's fine. It's all fine!" I couldn't tell if Roman was trying to comfort me or himself. The ride started again and Roman yelped as we lurched forward.

"You're ok Roman. We're ok. Just..." I paused, trying to think of something, "What normally calms you down?" I asked him. He looked at me and looked around trying to find an answer.

"I don't know... music? I'm a theater kid," he had gained some color back into his face as we got closer to the ground.

"Ok, run a song through your head," I offered as we started towards the sky again. Roman looked at me like I was crazy, and I might be. It was kind a dumb idea, but eventually Roman started humming a song.

I let myself relax as Roman slowly did the same. His eyes were still closed, but they weren't squeezed shut anymore and his hands were in his lap instead of white knuckled on the rail. I leaned against him and shut my eyes, focusing on his humming voice. I recognized it. I didn't think I would, but I did. I pushed away from Roman and stared at him. He jumped at my sudden movement.

"What? What happened???" Roman looked at me in alarm.

"Nothing. Just... nothing," I scooted back closer to Roman and pulled his arm around me like I had earlier. He didn't look convinced. "I promise it's nothing. Just.. keep humming," I pressed. He still didn't seem convinced, but he complied and I felt him relax. He had started the song over and was now humming the chorus. I closed my eyes and leaned back into Roman's shoulder. The song felt like a lullaby to me. I don't know when I started, but I found myself humming along. Roman didn't notice either until I started muttering the lyrics of the second verse.

"Just slip me on I'll be your blanket. Wherever, whatever, I'll be your coat," I sang just above a whisper, but Roman heard me. He had stopped humming, but I continued, "You'll be my king and I'll be your castle," I don't know what I was expecting, but Roman to finish the lyric, wasn't it.

"You'll be my queen and I'll be your moat," He finished, his voice significantly better than mine. A couple singing a song together on a ferris wheel; it sounded like something out of a shitty fanfic.

"Why that song?" I asked.

"That's the performance the theater is working on. Rent that is. Yesterday's Collin and Angel couldn't get that scene right so it was basically that song on loop all day," Roman shrugged. What about you? Why do you know it so well. It's not the most popular song in the world, or even the theater world," Roman asked me.

"That song's basically the reason I'm alive," I said. Roman didn't seem to understand and I could see why. It was kind of a stupid answer. "My parents. Mom was 17, Dad was 18, and the community theater was doing a showing of Rent. Mom was an actual theater kid and Dad was doing it because of a dare. He had no idea he was actually good. Mom was auditioning for Mimi and Dad was auditioning for Collins. Dad got the part and they moved Mom to Angel. They didn't have enough male actors interested, so they dropped the drag queen idea and just made her female. First rehearsal and boom, bright pink light and they found out they were soulmates. Two months later they performed. Nine months after that, here I am." I gestured towards myself.

"Hm," was Roman's only response. The ride finished and they got off the wheel.

"What about you?" I asked, Roman glanced at me. "How did your parents meet?"

"Oh. Not nearly as cute of a story as yours was. They went to highschool together. Kind of your cliche high school drama show actually. Mom was head cheer leader and Dad was the football quarter back. I was kind of a let down as a kid really. Dad wanted someone to walk in his footsteps and I turned out to be a drama nerd. He pushed me to play sports all the way until sophomore year, then I quit for good and focused full time on plays and theater and all that good stuff I actually enjoy. I'm glad my sister was able to make up for me. Not a cheerleader, but she's the captain of her volleyball team and plays basketball when she's not doing that," Roman seemed a bit lost in thought, "I don't think my parents were ever proud of me for anything, they always told me I needed to find a girl to straighten me out, then I told them I was bi and they really didn't know what to do. I think they're still in denial actually. Whenever soulmates are brought up that always referred to mine as a she," Roman said.

"So they're going to hate me?" I questioned, genuinely worried.

"Nah," Roman scoffed.

"Have you even told them about me?" I asked. Roman didn't answer, "Roman?" I pressed again, a bit sterner this time.

"Well, no not exactly. I haven't talked to them recently or I would have. I'm not really that close to them anyway. I told my sister though, she's really sweet and I'm sure you two will get along just fine," He promised. "Have you told your parents about me?" He turned the question onto me.

"Well kinda. I told them there was someone they would need to meet, but I figured it might be better off in person. I'm sure they'll love you. With you working at the theater and everything."

"Fun. I can't wait." Roman chirped. "C'mon, I told you I was going to win you a bear didn't I?" he grabbed my hand and dragged me to the nearest game kiosk. It was a ring toss game and we both did awfully. Roman grumbled and we went to the next game. It was a water gun game and I beat him this time. The prize wasn't all that big and was just a little monkey beanie baby. Roman decided to try his luck at a ball throwing game. Throw a baseball, knock down all the pins, win a giant stuffed unicorn. Roman aced it. He was handed the giant, rainbow, sparkly unicorn and he passed it onto me. "Whatcha gonna name it?" Roman inquired.

"Hmmm," I thought for a moment, "Thomas," I said.

"Really? You're naming a beautiful, sparkling, rainbow unicorn Thomas? That's such a human name," Roman whined.

"Exactly. That's what makes it so funny and fitting," I answered. I checked my phone for the time and realized it was much later than I thought it was. "Shit! We have to go to dinner!"

"Oh!" Roman exclaimed, "I totally forgot about the other two!" He laughed, "How do you think they're doing by the way?" He asked for my opinion. I shrugged.

"Let's just hope Logan's still with us," I muttered and we picked a little restaurant and sat down. I texted Logan where we were and a few minutes later they joined us.

Dinner was nice. Roman and I split the chicken carbonara and garlic bread. We ate and talked and Patton and Logan were still fully functional, so that was a plus. We ate and talked until it was almost dark. Roman and I decided to order a dessert and Logan and Patton took off early so they could get mini donuts before fireworks. We laid down a blanket and used Thomas as a pillow as we looked up at the booming and colorful sky.

"So Logan's still in one piece," Roman said and I glanced over at the other two who were sitting on their own blanket.

"Yeah... I hope whatever goes on with them works out. They'd be absolutely adorable together, but the last thing I want is for one or both of them to get hurt," I expressed my concern to Roman.

"I'm sure they'll figure something out. It might take a while, but I don't think they'll be able to stay apart forever. Did you see the way they were looking at each other at dinner?" Roman giggled.

"Forget dinner, look at them now," I pointed out and sure enough Logan was looking at Patton with a smile tugging on his mouth while Patton pointed up at the sky in awe at the fireworks, colors reflecting in his glasses.

"Yeah.." Roman said tiredly and we returned our attention to the light show in the sky. A few big explosions prompted giggles and gasps from both of us and the smaller crackling ones were just as beautiful. After a while I commented on a big red one exploding, but received no reply. I twisted my neck to see that my soulmate was snoozing away. I smiled and snuggled in closer to the sleeping boy. I was tired, but I didn't fall asleep. I was just happy to be there. With my best friend, my soulmate, and a sky bursting with color and light.

K. Forget the last one being a long chapter. This one takes the cake. 6,900 words. Jesus. Anyway... I really hope you enjoyed this chapter and btw I wrote some of it on my phone so if there are oddball words in places that don't make sense that I didn't catch... damn autocorrect am I right? Ugh. Sorry for this taking so long, it's been a crazy time over here. Also if you didn't get the whole Rent thing, I'm sorry. I just really like the musical and I needed a theater song for Virgil's backstory.

Love y'all!
