Chapter XVII:

(Disclaimer: all of this belongs to Rick Riordan. The only thing I own is Terra. I made her up.

Note: Here's Tyson and Ella. I met this guy named Tyson recently and wanted to ask him if he liked peanut butter so bad, but I figured out he wasn't a Percy Jackson fan, so I lost my burning desire to ask him that question. It was such a shame.

Some people are saying that I need to make my chapters shorter. I tend to like really long chapters because I hate short ones and it's a bit more similar to an actual book, but since there are so many of you talking about how my chapters are too long (I don't believe in such a thing) I will start making them shorter. If you don't like the change. Say so in the comments.

And nobody got all the quotes! So no one gets this chapter dedicated to them. I was very disappointed. Some of you only had one more. Please, no one comment on what they actually were in this chapter. The next chapter will be dedicated to the next person who finds them all in that last chapter. You see how nice I am? I'm giving you extra time. I actually do have a heart, okay? And there will be only a few quotes in this chapter if there happen to be any. I make them up as I go. But we aren't having a contest on those, just last chapter's.

And I have a feeling that I should soon publish a book on Terra's previous life at Camp Jupiter to clear some confusion and just for fun. You guys can comment on that too. Tell me if you want me to do that, I've been pondering the idea. I'll notify you guys when it is published. Well, I guess that's all I have to say for now.

PPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT BBBBBBBBBBBBBUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and that. Now back to the story.)

I stood there next to Jason, Leo, and Hedge. Staring into the darkness of the outside storm, waiting. The suspense was eating me away. I felt my heart pounding in my head, beads of sweat started to develop on my forehead. I couldn't hear the wolves howling, but the bushes where rustling louder than they used to be. I've never felt so shaken up before. Probably because I had almost died just a while ago and had a chance of staring at the face of death once again, that's a good explanation.

Then, just outside the firelight at the entrance of the cave, I noticed a pair of red eyes glowing in the dark. The hairs on the back on my neck stood up and I felt my muscles tense. More wolves edged into the firelight, black beasts bigger than Great Danes, with ice and snow caked on their fur. Their fangs gleamed, and their glowing eyes looked disturbingly intelligent. The wolf in the front was as tall as a horse, his mouth stained as if he'd just made a fresh kill, which I didn't find that comforting.

I remembered something about wolves, well, werewolves to be exact since that's probably what we're dealing with. They could only be killed with silver. I looked at our weapons. Wood, gold, bronze, steel, ice, and whatever else Leo could pull out of that miracle belt. So far Leo was our only bet of a chance against these guys, and I'm guessing we're to late for him to give us each our own silver weapon.

"We don't want to fight. Please, at least let us negotiate with your leader." Jason said.

The biggest wolf curled his lip and the fur stood up along his spine. One of the smaller wolves tried to advance, but the bigger one snapped at it's ear. Then they all backed up mysteriously into the dark. These guys gave me the friggen he-be-gee-be's.

"Good job," I said to Jason.

He seemed as shaken as I was, all he was able to do was nod.

"Dude, I gotta study Latin." Leo's hammer shook in his hand. "What'd you say, Jason?"

Latin? But he spoke in English. You know what? Forget it. I've had enough confusion, I'm just going with it. I understand Latin. Okay. Now calm the crap down before you pass out, Terra.

Hedge cursed.

"Language." I spat at him.

He gave me a weird look and focused back on the trance of the cave. "Whatever it was, it wasn't enough. Look."

The wolves were coming back, hopefully to negotiate. The big wolf wasn't there, just the smaller ones standing in a semicircle, blocking off our only way out. They weren't attacking, thank the gods. They were just standing there, which was quite creepy, considering that it seemed like they were all staring at me.

Coach hefted his club. "Here's the plan. I'll kill them all, and you guys escape."

"Dude, I'm pretty sure they'll kill you." I said.

"Nah, I'll be fine."

I rolled my eyes at his ignorance and then noticed that someone was coming through the storm.

"Stick together," Jason said. "They respect a pack. And Hedge, no crazy stuff. We're not leaving you or anyone else behind."

Ugh, I'm so sweaty right now. I bet the wolves can smell the nervousness on me. I feel like they'll be able to kill me easily. I can already see it now...

Wolf: *stares*

Me: *dies*

Wolf: What the crap? I mean, yeah. Yeah, I meant to do that.

The man finally made it into the firelight, he wasn't a pretty sight. His hair was greasy and ragged, the color of coal, topped with a crown of small bones that might have been from small animals or fingers of humans. His robes were mangled and torn fur. I could identify wolf, deer, raccoon, antelope, and is that cow hide? The furs didn't look cured, and from the smell, they hadn't been cleaned ever since the kill. His frame was lithe and muscular, like a distance runner's. But the most horrible part of him was probably his face. His thin pale skin was pulled tight over his skull. His teeth were sharpened like fangs. His eyes glowed bright red like the wolves'.......but what really scared me is that he was staring right at Jason with absolute hatred.

"Behold," he said, "the Son of Rome."

Then it looked like he sniffed the air, and his eyes snapped towards me. I felt goosebumps travel throughout my entire body.

"The Daughter of Rome, no less."

Jason and I stared at each other for a second then snapped back to the wolf man as soon as Coach said:

"Speak English, wolf man!"

Here we go again. Someone speaking a different language but it sounds English to me.

The wolf man snarled. "Tell your faun to mind his tongue, children of Rome. Or he'll be my first snack."

I turned Coach. "Hey, Hedge?"

"Yeah?"

"Mind being quiet for a while?" I asked.

"Yes."

I glared at him with the look that said "Excuse me?"

"I mean, no. Of course not."

Good goat.

The wolf man studied our group, and his nostrils twitched. "So it's true," he mused. "A child of Aphrodite. A son of Hephaestus. A faun. And two children of Rome, of Lord Jupiter.....and Khione, as well. All together, without killing each other. How interesting."

"You were told about us?" Jason asked. "By whom?"

The man snarled, but judging by the way he is, that could have possibly been a laugh of some sort. Or a challenge, I can't really tell with this guy.

"Oh, we've been patrolling for you all across the west, demigod, hoping we'd be the first to find you. The giant kind will reward me well when he rises. I am Lycaon, the king of wolves. And my pack is hungry."

The wolves snarled in the darkness, and I did what I usually do when I'm scared. Try to use humor to get me out of the situation.

"Oh, so your hungry? Well Leo here, is a really good taco maker, he also does burgers. So if you're in a mood for meat we just fry some up for you and your pack. And I think I saw a Burger King somewhere nearby, right guys? I think there was a Coldstone or Dairy Queen close by as well, so if you want dessert-"

"You can't deceive me, child of Rome. Your humor has no affect on my mind." He said with a look of disgust on his face.

I stared at him. "So you can't take a joke? That sucks. Laughing is amazing. One of the best parts of life-"

Lycaon growled, and I faded out.

"If I had it my way," he said with regret, "I'd kill you first, son of Jupiter. Your father made me what I am. I was the powerful mortal king of Arcadia, with fifty fine sons, and Zeus slew them all with his lightning bolts."

"Ha," Coach Hedge said. "For a good reason!"

Jason glanced over his shoulder. "Coach, you know this clown?"

And then the story popped into my head. This guy is screwed up.

"I do," Piper answered, a look of seriousness and despair on her face. "Lycaon invited Zeus over to dinner, but the king wasn't sure it was really Zeus. So to test his powers, Lycaon tried to feed him human flesh. Zeus got outraged-"

"And killed my sons!" Lycaon howled and so did the wolves.

"So Zeus turned him into a wolf," Piper said. "They call.....they call werewolves lycanthropes, named after him, the first werewolf."

"The king of wolves," Coach finished. "An immortal, smelly, vicious mutt."

I smacked my forehead and held the base of my nose. "Coach, you're going to get us killed."

Lycaon growled. "I will tear you apart, faun!"

"Oh, you want some goat, buddy? 'Cause I'll give you goat."

"Stop!" I shouted.

"Lycaon," Jason said. "You said you wanted to kill me first, but....?"

"Sadly, Son of Rome, you are spoken for. Since this one" he waggled his claws at Piper, "has failed to kill you, you are to be delivered alive to the Wolf House. One of my compatriots has asked for the honor of killing you herself."

"Who?" Jason said.

The wolf king snickered. "Oh, a great admirer of yours. Apparently, you made quite an impression on her. She will take care of you soon enough, and really I cannot complain. Spilling your blood at the Wolf House should mark my new territory quite well. Lupa will think twice about challenging my pack."

Lupa. That name stuck with me. I know that name......but from where? And the girl that wants to kill Jason, that has to be Medea. She must of survived the explosion, gosh darn it fates.

Piper stood up shakily, she looked so weak, but managed to put a determined and powerful look on her face. Her voice was shaky, but I could sense how much she was trying to put her charmspeak into them.

"You're going to leave now," Piper said, "before we destroy you."

I knew it wasn't enough, Piper was too weak.

Lycaon's red eyes crinkled with humor. "A brave try, girl. I admire that. Perhaps I'll make your end quick. Only the son of Jupiter is needed alive, and possibly the daughter of Khione, though the odds aren't quite in her favor. The rest of you, I'm afraid, are dinner."

Jason took a step forward. "You're not killing anyone, wolf man. Not without going through me."

Lycaon howled and extended his claws. Jason slashed at him, but his golden sword passed straight through the wolf king like he wasn't there.

Lycaon laughed. "Gold, bronze, ice, steel. None of these are any good against my wolves, son of Jupiter."

"We need silver!" I shouted. "We need silver now!"

"We don't have any silver!" Jason said.

Wolves leaped into the firelight. Hedge charge forward with an elated "Woot!"

But Leo struck first. He threw a glass bottle and it shattered on the ground, splattering liquid all over the wolves. I was wondering what the heck Leo was doing until the smell of gasoline hit me and Leo lit it on fire. Wolves yelped and retreated. Several caught on fire, leaving a burnt fur smell, and ran back into the snow. Even Lycaon looked uneasily at the flames now separating his wolves from us.

"Aw, c'mon," Hedge complained. "I can't hit them if they're way over there."

Whenever a wolf would come closer, Leo would send a new wave I've fire from his hands. I was starting to get weak from the flames, so I scooted back a bit. Even Leo seemed a little more tired, and we were running out of gasoline.

"I can't summon anymore gas!" Leo warned. Then his face turned red. "Wow, that came out wrong."

I snickered.

"I mean the burning kind. Gonna take the tool belt a while to recharge. What you got, man?"

"Nothing," Jason said. "Not even a weapon that works."

"Lightning?" Piper asked.

Jason concentrated, but nothing happened. "I think the snowstorm is interfering, or something. Can you make it go away, Terra?"

I focused my mind on the storm, I felt a connection, something like a tug under my gut. I commanded the storm to go away, I felt it work. Then something shoved me out, like literally. I literally felt as if I was shoved out the front door of a house and the door got slammed and locked right in front of my face. I opened my eyes and whipped the sweat off of my forehead, I could feel a head ache coming on.

"I can't...the storm, it's too powerful. I think...I think it's being controlled by something."

"Great." Leo muttered.

"Unleash the venti!" Piper said.

I turned towards her. "You crazy? We can't do that, we'll have nothing to give Aeolus. We'll have come all this way for nothing."

Lycaon laughed. "I can smell your fear. A few more minutes of life, heroes. Pray to whatever gods you wish. Zeus did not grant me mercy, and you will have none from me."

"Thank you for the wonderful speech, Mr. Sunshine-and-Daisies. It makes my life so much easier!" I shouted sarcastically back at him.

The flames began to sputter and I hastily prayed to every god I could think of trying to see if any had sympathy. Jason cursed, dropped his sword, and got into a hand-to-hand combat position. I made my weapons disappear and as soon as I finished my prayer to Artemis a ripping sound cut through the wind, like some one was tearing cardboard.

A long stick sprouted from the neck of the nearest wolf, the shaft of a silver arrow. The wolf writhed and fell, melting into a puddle of shadow. My heart skipped a beat. An arrow. That must mean.....IT WORKED!!!!!!

More arrows. More wolves fell. The pack broke in confusion. An arrow flashed toward Lycaon, but the wolf king caught it in midair. Then he yelled in pain. When he dropped the arrow, it left a charred, smoking gash across his palm. Another arrow caught him in the shoulder, and the wolf king staggered.

"Curse them!" Lycaon yelled. He growled at his pack, and the wolves. Turned and ran. Lycaon fixed Jason with those glowing red eyes. "This isn't over, boy."

The wolf king disappeared into the night.

Seconds later, I could hear the baying of wolves. At first I thought, "Oh crap, here we go again." But these wolves sounded gentler. Less threatening, more like hunting dogs on the scent. A smaller white wolf burst into the cave, followed by two more.

Hedge said, "Kill it?"

"No!" I said, outraged by his violent impulses. "Just wait."

The wolves tilted their heads and studied us with huge golden eyes. I stepped forward with an out stretched hand, but before I could take another step, their masters appeared. A troop of hunters in white-and-gray winter camouflage, at least six. All of them carried bows, with quivers of glowing silver arrows on their backs. Their parka hoods were pulled over their heads. They were the Hunters of Artemis.

One, a little taller than the rest, crouched in the firelight and snatched up the arrow that had wounded Lycaon's hand.

"So close." She turned to her companions. "Phoebe, stay with me. Watch the entrance. The rest of you, follow Lycaon. We can't lose him now. I'll catch up with you."

The other hunters mumbled agreement and disappeared, heading after Lycaon's pack. The girl in white turned towards us, her face still hidden by the parka hood.

"We've been following that demon's trail for over a week. Is everyone all right? No one got bit?"

"We're all fine." I informed the Hunter. "Thanks for showing up. We were dead meat."

Something was familiar about her. Not like "I've seen you before." type thing. It was something much more deep. Some sort of connection.

"You're her," Piper said. "You're Thalia."

The girl tensed. And I felt like I had just been slapped. Percy and Annabeth had told me about her, she's a hero. She saved the camp. She pulled off her hood and looked exactly as Percy had described her. The spiky black hair and the shockingly bright blue eyes. The eyes seemed familiar too. I've seen them before.

"Do I know you?" Thalia asked.

Piper took a breath. "This might be a shock, but-"

"Thalia." Jason stepped forward, his voice was trembling dramatically. "I'm Jason, your brother."

I felt like I just got back handed in the face. I stared back and forth between them. The only resemblance I saw was the eyes, and possibly the nose. I can't tell with their drastically different appearances. Thalia rushed forward and hugged him.

"My gods! She told me you were dead!" She gripped Jason's face and seemed to be examining everything about it. "Thank Artemis, it is you. That little scar on your lip, you tried to eat a stapler when you were two!"

The image of baby Jason gnawing on a stapler with drool hanging out of his mouth made me laugh.

Leo laughed too. "Seriously?"

Hedge nodded like he approved of Jason's taste. "Staplers, excellent source of iron."

I laughed again.

"W-wait," Jason stammered. "Who told you I was dead? What happened?"

At the entrance, one of the white wolves barked. Thalia looked back at the wolf and nodded, but she kept her hands on Jason's face, obviously not willing to let go.

"My wolf is telling me I don't have much time, and she's right." Thalia informed. "But we have to talk. Let's sit."

Then Piper collapsed, I think she misheard. Luckily, Coach Hedge had caught her before she hit the ground.

Thalia rushed over. "What's wrong with her? Ah, never mind. I see. Hypothermia. Ankle." She frowned at Coach. "Don't you know nature healing?"

Hedge scoffed. "Why do you think she looks this good? Can't you smell the Gatorade?"

Thalia stared between Leo and I accusingly, as if she was mad that we let the satyr take care of Piper.
"You two and the satyr," Thalia ordered, "take this girl to my friend at the entrance. Phoebe's an excellent healer."

"It's cold out there!" Hedge said. "I'll freeze my horns off."

"Come on, Hedge. These two need time to talk." Leo said.

"Humph. Fine," the satyr muttered. "Didn't even get to brain anybody."

We were ready to leave when a question came into mind.

"Thalia?" I asked.

She raised an eyebrow at me.

"Have you seen any signs of where Percy could be?" I had remembered we had her helping to look for him.

She looked slightly shocked. "You know Percy?"

"Yeah, I came in a few months ago, we were really good friends. He told me a lot about you."

"What's your name?" She asked.

"Terra, daughter of Khione."

She smiled. "Nice to finally meet you."

I walked to the entrance with Coach, Piper, and Leo, when Jason called out.

"Actually, Leo, could you, um, stick around?"

Leo nodded. "Sticking around is my specialty."

Coach and I hauled Piper off to Phoebe, and I had no clue where she was or how to find her, Thalia didn't give any detailed instructions. We got out of the cave and I immediately saw this silver tent/pavilion thing-a-ma-jig. A white wolf was right outside of it and as it saw us, it barked. The door to the tent opened and Phoebe came out. She took one look at us and opened the door wider for us to come in.

"Thanks." I said.

There was a kerosene heater keeping the room warm for a normal person, but to hot for me. I felt beads of sweat develop on my forehead. There were a bunch of comfy throw pillows scattered on the floor for us to sit on. Coach set Piper down and Phoebe began treating her immediately. She looked up at me and she scrunched her eyebrows together.

"You don't look to well."

"Yeah, daughter of Khione and all. I'll just step outside." I said.

I walked out and surveyed the storm raging around us. I remembered how it had shut me out, the "something" inside of it that wouldn't let me control it. It was so unsettling, so disturbing. Something is out there, and I have a feeling it's trying to get us. It could be my mom, it is a snow storm after all. But why on earth would she do something like this? What did Piper and Jason say while meeting with Boreas. Did it have to do with the fact that Jason had rejected her? My mother sucks. When I get the chance, I'll beat the crap out of her.

The wind blew harder and a leaf hit me in the face as if my mother had heard my thoughts and was reprimanding me. I smirked and pulled the leaf out of my hair. It's gonna take a lot more than that to stop me old lady.

Then the wind picked up a little more and before I could stop it my braid slapped me right on the nose. I cupped my hands around it immediately, and rubbed it to soothe the pain. The sharp prickly feelings of the bottoms of hair jabbing me in the face lingered. I could almost hear my mom laughing in the distance. That evil prick.

I continued to stand there, holding onto my braid, watching Jason, Thalia, and Leo talk from a distance. I was still shocked that those two were related. In all siblings that are born from the same two parents you can find several or at least one big thing that they have in common with their features. Or at least maybe the people I hang around. And Percy described Thalia as a "free spirit". I didn't exactly see that in Jason. Maybe if suddenly Jason dyed his hair black and let it grow out a bit I would see a resemblance. Or if Thalia dyed her hair blonde.

Oh, forget it. They're siblings, so what? I have much more troubling things in my life that I should be wasting this time thinking on.....like my Nico and Leo deal.

Ohhh, that's a subject I don't want to go over, but I most definitely need to. Well, let's see. Both have declared feelings for me, and I for them. Neither of them have said I was girlfriend, nor have I said them same. So I guess I'll just decide which one I like better and then somehow make the other fall out of love with me. Piece of cake, right?

Not! I can already tell this is going to be a flop! I want to curl up into a ball and cry and declare war against the fates! Gods, couldn't Leo and Nico be one guy and make it easier on me? No? WELL SCREW YOU WORLD!

Well, that escalated quickly. I'm not entirely sure I can plan how I'm going to handle this. For now, I'll have to wait. I have to save the world first. Then if I survive I can go on ranting about how unfair the world is and cry myself to sleep in self-pity.....has my life really gone to this? Dagnabbit.

I must have really gone off into deep thought because the next thing I knew Leo, Jason and Thalia were already a few yards away. I don't know how I didn't notice them earlier.

I must have looked disturbed or disgruntled because Leo asked me if I was okay and why I was tugging at my hair.

I unclenched my hands and put them back at my sides.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Just thinking. And my hair kept hitting me in the face so...yeah." I finished awkwardly.

He shrugged his shoulders and followed Thalia and Jason into the hut/tent/what-cha-ma-call-it.

As soon as I entered the room, I got hit with a wave of heat and was reminded why I had left. Phoebe, Hedge, and Piper were all kicking back and enjoying some hot chocolate.

"Oh, no way," Leo said. "We've been siting in a cave and you get the luxury tent? Somebody give me hypothermia. I want hot chocolate and a parka!"

The creepy part of my mind laughed evilly and said "I could make that happen." But being "not evil" and all it mad me think "What's wrong with my brain?" And make my evil side go sit back in the corner and continue to wear the cone of shame.

Phoebe sniffed. "Boys." She said, as if they were the lowest form of waste.

"It's all right, Phoebe," Thalia said. "They'll need extra coats. And I think we can spare some chocolate."

Phoebe grumbled and soon Leo and Jason were in silvery winter clothes and all three of us had hot chocolate. Well, I guess I didn't exactly have "hot" chocolate. I froze it as soon as she gave it to me and at it with a spoon I had asked for. It was pretty amazing, but I would have added some cinnamon or peppermint to the drink to make it better.

"Cheers!" Said Coach Hedge. He crunched down his plastic thermos cup.

"That cannot be for your intestines," Leo said.

Thalia patted Piper on the back. "You up for moving?"

Piper nodded. "Thanks to Phoebe, yeah. You guys are really good at this wilderness survival thing. I feel like I could run ten miles."

Thalia winked at Jason. "She's tough for a child of Aphrodite. I like this one."

I felt my cheeks burn. And I my insides shouted "What's wrong with me?"

"Hey, I could run ten miles too," Leo volunteered. "Tough Hephaestus kid here. Let's hit it."

We got out and Phoebe broke camp in about seven seconds. The whole tent just self-collapsed into a square about the size of an Altoids pack you find next to the cash register in stores. I was tempted to ask Phoebe where I could find one of those, but I could tell that we didn't have time.

Thalia started running uphill and the rest followed. I joined and "We're Off To See The Wizard" popped into my head. I could tell it would be stuck in my head for the next couple days. I shook my head and caught up to Thalia. I had some questions for her.

(Note: Well! Hope you enjoyed! Don't forget to comment!)
