Chapter XI:
(Disclaimer: all of this belongs to Rick Riordan, except for Terra. I made her up.
Note: Here's Frank!!!)
I went into a deep sleep. A dream started to form. It was fuzzy again, like my last one, but a bit clearer than before. I was in some sort of arena. There were people watching and cheering, lots of people. A majority of the people were wearing that same exact purple shirt. There was this one section for two people who had long purple capes. They had a red canopy hanging over them. One was obviously a boy and the other a girl, they seemed to be watching intently and sharing things with each other every once and a while.
The floor of the arena was dirt with no sign of grass or any other kind of foliage visible. There were lots of one-on-one fights going on around. There was a tall, castle looking building near the end of the arena that was black and had other team members aiming at us. There was a red flag blowing in the wind at the top of the castle and a dude standing cooly next to it with a smug look on his face. I could see catapults, archers, swordsmen, and others with different weapons prepared for a fight. I had a feeling this was going to suck.
I noticed I was wearing a breastplate and a helmet with blue feathers. The sword I was holding was gold and very similar to my ice sword. I was forging ahead in a formation along with some others. I felt utterly clueless, but I guess I knew what I was doing. All the others were wearing the same gear, but some of them had different weapons, like bows and spears. I noticed we were in a wedge formation, fighting off other demigods that had red feathers coming out of their helmets.
Someone from the other team charged at me and I slapped them in the face with the flat of my blade. Were we playing capture the flag? It seemed like it. But if we were, our team had a clear disadvantage......no fortress to hide in.
A tall guy with blue eyes, black hair, and dark red lips from somewhere up in the front of our weird wedge formation shouted something I couldn't really make out, but I stopped moving while everyone forged ahead. I ducked down low and was hidden from the other team by my teammates. There were two others that were doing the same as me, they were both obviously male.
One was quite large and slightly chubby wearing a hoodie underneath his armor and was armed with a bow and arrows, which was a very interesting combo of weapon and wielder of the weapon. His skin was a little tan and was I'm pretty sure he was Chinese from his facial features. The other male was not as tall, but definitely taller than me with a gold sword that looked familiar. Where have I seen that sword? I know that's gonna bug me forever until I figure out when I've seen it. I couldn't see his face, he was facing the direction in which we were going, but his body structure seemed familiar too. I could see some blonde hair peeking out from his helmet, but that was all. I had feeling I knew this person.
We snuck over to one of the walls of the castle and hid in the shadows.
"You ready guys?" said the second male in a very familiar voice.
I faced him and said, "What made you think I wasn't ready, Grace?"
I flipped out in my mind. Da crap is Jason doing in my dream??? I guess this really proves it, we are both from this....this......place. I don't really know what to call it. So yeah, Jason and I are from the same "place".
Jason was definitely younger, but I could tell it wasn't by much. His bright blue eyes sent an electrical surge through my body, like his first night at Camp when he summoned lightning at campfire. I noticed his small, thin scar on his lip. I wonder how and when he got it. Jason gave me a small smirk.
"Come on Frank, let's move." I said to the other guy.
Okay, I don't know this "Frank". Who the heck is he? I've never seen him before in my life!.............Or have I? Am I regaining my memories, my true memories? Like Piper had said? So does that mean I knew Jason before this quest? Argh. Oh my gosh, I think my brain is being overloaded with questions. I'm not kidding, my head's actually starting to hurt.
We continued down the wall and into a tight squeeze. Well, at least for Jason and Frank it was. Being short and skinny could be a real advantage sometimes. I could have normally walked if I wanted to instead of doing the "squish against the wall and hardly breathe so you can actually move" thing, but I did it anyway to make Jason and Frank feel better. We got to a rear entrance that was being guarded by a guy who looked about eighteen. He had red hair and brown eyes.
I walked out into his line of view and he jumped back in surprise. "Sorry about this Larry, but we have to win this." Then I socked him in the face.
He crumpled to the floor and Frank and Jason came out. Frank looked a little scared, but Jason looked like he couldn't tell if he found my actions annoying or impressive.
"Okay, you done showing off now?" Jason asked.
"Nope." I said popping the "p".
Jason opened the door slowly, and we walked in, only to be greeted by two boys and one girl. They looked really into this and scary, like sons and a daughter of Ares. 'No, Mars.' A voice whispered. Wait, what?
I spun my sword in my hand and got into a fighting stance.
"Dakota sent children to get the flag? Ha. He has to be very desperate." said the girl.
I got out of my fighting stance and stood normally, with my hands up a little. "Whoa. Excuse me? I'm not a child, okay? I'm fourteen........and a half. And we've got the son of Jupiter with us so if you could please step aside so nobody get's hurt-"
"Yaargh!!" the girl said as she brought down her sword.
I blocked it and spun it out of her hand. "Now that wasn't very nice. I was planning on making friends."
She starred at me like I was nuts, probably because I was, so I took the opportunity to knock her in the side of her face with the blade of my sword. She stumbled sideways and when she tried to reach for her sword, I brought my elbow down to the edge of her shoulder blade and she groaned in pain. That usually knocks other people out, so I just resorted to slapping her in the face with the blade of my sword again.
She fell, and I turned to see Frank and Jason still fighting off the two boys.
"Step back ladies, let the master play." I said stepping through Jason and Frank.
The boys sized me up and the one on the left decided to make the first move. I waited until he was confident with his move and grabbed his head by his hair and rammed him into the wall behind me. It wasn't to hard, just enough to make you not capable of fighting anymore.
The other boy starred at me. "What are you? Daughter of Mars?"
"Doubt it. Never really been the violent type." I said.
I flung my sword up in time to block his. "Ooo. You almost caught me off-guard there. But your gonna have to talk a lot more to get my reflexes relaxed."
He swung again from the side, and then from the left. We swung at the same time and the force from the collision knocked my sword out of my hand. "Crap."
The guy looked like he wanted to kill me, and without my sword in reach, I didn't know how to react but side-step. I did, but Jason stepped in and took him out by slapping him in the face with his blade.
"Hey! That's my thing." I complained while picking up my sword.
"You're welcome for saving your life." He said with an annoyed look on his face.
"Dido." I said with a smirk.
I picked up the girl's gold sword, and handed it to Frank. He took it, I could tell he felt uncomfortable holding it.
"It's for close defense because I don't want you killing anyone with that bow." I said pointing at it with my sword.
He kind of looked at the ground and shifted weirdly. "Okay."
"Now, let's go find the wizard of Oz." I said jokingly.
They looked at me blankly.
"The wizard of Oz. You know with Dorothy and the Wicked Witch of the West and the Cowardly Lion. Glinda the Good Witch. The Emerald City? The red ruby slippers? You know, 'We're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz.'" I sang. "No? Nothing? You haven't seen the movie?"
They looked at me so cluelessly I expected crickets to start chirping.
"Forget it, let's just get the flag." I said waving my hand and turning to go up some stairs leading to the top of the castle.
We made our way nicely through a couple floors, but some were pretty well guarded, so it took us quite a while to get to the top. I saved Jason and Frank's lives a few times and Jason got a couple more times to save mine. Errgh. I wonder why Jason and I don't hit it off very well. Can't wait for that memory. #sarcasmrules.
We eventually got to the top level where I had seen the flag and all those catapults, archers, and other "great" surprises. I made no sound going up the stairs, but that was utterly useless because Frank was stomping up a storm. Some archers turned to us and we had the swordsmen's full attention. I just sighed and tried not to look at Frank.
I walked forward and put my hands up in surrender. "Yeah, I guessed that it would lead to this. We surrender."
"Terra! What are you doing?!" Jason said in a harsh whisper.
"Calm down Sparky, I've got this under control. Just follow my lead." I whispered to him through the right side of my mouth where he stood next to me, only loud enough for him to hear.
"Don't call me Sparky." He said through the side of his mouth even more agitated.
"Put your weapons on the floor in front of you." One of the boys said.
I tried not to smile as I put my sword in front of me exactly four feet away, with the blade pointing towards me. Why was I trying not to smile?
"What do we do now since they've surrendered? This wasn't planned." One of the other boys said as he scratched behind his ear.
The boy who had asked us to get rid of our weapons turned towards the other boy. "We wait for Ben, Victoria, and Maddie to get the flag."
I looked off to see another castle with a blue flag waving in the wind. Okay, so it was a fair fight. Good. I was starting to really question the purpose of a game of capture-the-flag with only one team with a flag and defenses. Things didn't seem to be going to good over there.
Nothing happened for a long time. Frank, Jason, and I just stood there. Jason kept giving me questionable looks, but I kept giving him reassuring looks that I was still going with the plan. Our "guards" started to loosen up on us, assuming we really were surrendering. There was one boy who kept turning back to look at me. He was a little shorter than Jason, but was still taller than me. Then he walked up to me.
"Terra, what are you doing? I thought you said you were sure you were going to win this." Whispered the boy.
"Octavian, it'll be fine. Our plan wouldn't have worked anyway. Dakota doesn't understand fighting skills. His plans messed up any chance of us winning." I said.
Was I really giving up? That doesn't sound like me. I'd probably give up if my friends were dying or if I was on the verge of death, but not this easily. I have to be planning something, like a sneak attack. Yeah, that's probably what's going on. Octavian's on the other team and I'm just fooling him to make it seem like I really am giving up.
He just walked off with wide eyes and whispered something to the guy that had ordered us to put down our weapons. The guy grinned and seemed to relax a little, then he started talking with his teammates. That's when I did a cartwheel to grab my sword and knock the guy unconscious by slapping him in the face with my sword.
"What?! What kind of move was that?? It was so.....so....unroman." One of the nearby boys said.
I jabbed hilt down in a weak spot on his shoulder. "Yeah, it's called 'Terra-style'. Learn it!"
I went away slapping people in the face with my sword, jabbing them in weak spots with the hilt of my sword, and actually having to fistfight a few. Soon, there was no more of the opposing team to fight. I turned to see Jason grabbing Octavian by the collar of his shirt and his fist pulled back, with Octavian's face bleeding fear.
"Stop! Jason! That's enough." I said running over and putting my hand on his fist that was clinging on Octavian's shirt.
Jason reluctantly let go of Octavian. I saw that his nose was bleeding.
"What did you do?!" I asked Jason as I held Octavian's face in my hands while I examined his nose. It seemed to be fine.
"He's on the other team! What did you expect?! Have me read him a bedtime story while I rocked him to sleep?!" Jason protested.
"You know Octavian is my friend! I thought you would know better than to hurt him!" I said facing him with anger and disgust on my face.
"What do you mean 'thought you would know better'?" He asked gripping his sword tightly.
"You think your soooo great and smart. So why couldn't you obey my one simple request when we started this game?! He's the only friend I've got!! I'm not going to loose him!!!" I yelled pointing my sword at Jason.
"Oh, you mean how like you said you weren't going to loose your sister? Yeah, where is she now? Lost, gone forever. Probably killed by a monster and you were never there for her. And let's not forget your father. He so willingly gave you to Camp. He was so glad to finally rid himself of you. Not to mention your mother! She hasn't even claimed you yet! She'll never find you a worthy daughter!! You have nobody who cares for you!!! Not even Octavian!" He said.
I could feel tears start to develop. He struck a nerve, and he knew it. I could see the smirk on his face while I tried to blink away the tears.
"Uhh. Guys-" Frank said, but I interrupted him.
"Like your life is any better!! Your mother abandoned you when you were two!!! And your so called 'sister' never came and found you!! She promised that she would come back to you, but look!!! Have you ever seen any of your family since then??? No!! Not even your father had revealed himself to you! He's just claimed you. He probably hates your guts!! Your probably the worst son he's ever had!!" I spat.
"Guys!" Frank said, but nobody paid attention.
"AAAA!!!!" Jason said as he jumped into the air to bring down his sword.
I blocked his sword and nicked his cheek. It was about three inches long and about a quarter of an inch deep. It started to drip down his chin. He whipped his face and examined the amount of blood on his hand. He looked at me and gave a snarly look.
"Bring it on Sparky!" I yelled.
"Oh I will." He said with an evil smile.
He threw his sword in the air and it turned into a spear. He lifted it up and clouds gathered around him. Lightning flashed up in the clouds and came down to meet his spear. He pointed the spear at me and I lifted up my hands to block my face. I waited for the electric shock, but it didn't come. I opened my eyes and saw an ice wall blocking Jason from me. Where did that come from? Luckily, ice doesn't conduct electricity, so that's the reason I didn't get fried. But where did it come from?
The wall disappeared, to show Jason starring in awe. I started to regain my hatred and anger and charged at him. We fought one on one for some time. Jason trying to slap me in the face with his sword, but since I knew that move so well, I could block it every time. I swung at him a few times too. I nicked him some more on the legs and arms, and he got me a lot on my forearms and legs. He bruised me a few times on the sides. I knew I was loosing, but I couldn't let it end like this. I channeled my anger into my fighting and my swings seemed to be more powerful and quick. Something about me was changing, but I couldn't tell what it was.
When our swords collided, something blue sparked. Why did Jason electrocute the swing? I felt like there was a fan blowing nice cold breezes in our direction. It felt so nice and relaxing. Jason was starting to get distracted by something, but I couldn't tell what it was.
"Uhhhh.... Guys!!" Frank said from somewhere off to the side.
I ignored him. What did he have to say? He's probably try to make us stop fighting and tell us about how irrational our actions were. I hated Jason. If I have to, I will kill him. He's so arrogant, so retarded, so slow, so stupid.
I didn't realize until now that everyone in the arena had gone silent, but I didn't care. Jason summoned lightning again, but this time when he sent it towards me, I pointed my sword at the lightning and blue sparkly things came from my hand around my sword and collided with the lightning. It made a pretty big explosion, but somehow, Jason and I were still standing. The boy that was under the red canopy hopped onto a pegasus, and flew over to us. We started to fight with or swords again, and when I got Jason pretty good on the leg, he stopped us.
"Stop!!" He said. "This is totally unbelievable!!" He turned to Jason. "I expected more out of a son of Juptier, and because of your parentage, your punishments won't be as harsh. But as for you!" He spun towards me. "You are no longer a Senator!! You are lowered to Probatio." He ripped off a badge from the collar of my shirt.
"What?!?! That's like, the most racist thing I've ever heard. 'because of your parentage'?!? What if I end up being a daughter of Jupiter?!! What are you gonna do then?!" I mimicked him. "'Oh sorry, your free to go, now that we know that your godly parent was Jupiter, King of the gods, we're going to let you free so we don't get fried.' Why do you give Jason the special treatment?!?!? How come he's more special than me??!? What has he done that I haven't?!?!"
The boy looked down at me creating a towering effect that would have normally scared me but now I didn't care. I looked him straight in the eyes and glared.
"Terra Jones, I-" he stopped and starred above me.
I looked up to see a bright blue light shinning overhead. I could hardly make out what it was, a snowflake. Everyone was starring at it either in confusion, awe, discomfort, or no expression at all.
"Khione? Khione is your mom?" Jason said in surprise and confusion.
The boy with the purple cape scratched his head. "Well, I guess it makes sense. You know, with how your hair is very pale, your eyes are the color of ice and your skin is white-"
"Excuse me? It's obvious that I'm the daughter of a snow goddess because of my ethnicity? How much more racist can you get Praetor?" I said deeply offended.
"I-I meant that your whiter than other white people." He slapped his forehead. "No, I meant that-that your paler than most demigods?" He said trying not to be too racist. "Uh, where was I? Oh, yeah. Lowering you to Probatio."
I looked down. This was totally sucking. Why did my mom claim me now? What was she thinking? "Oh!! Hey! Look! My little girl is having her rank lowered for defending herself from a stupid son of Jupiter!! Ooo!! I know!! I'll embarrass her even more by claiming her which would make her remember this day even more vividly and have more People notice too!" Yeah, thanks mom. I don't know where you are right now, but I am mentally slapping you.
"Terra Jones. As recent Praetor of Camp, I remove you from the rank of Senator of the Fifth Cohort and give you the badge of Probatio." He placed the badge in my hand.
I started at it and looked up at him, pleading with my face. "Please, please let me keep my rank. I'll do anything!! You don't know how much this rank means to me!!"
He laughed a little. "Then you should of thought of that before you started a fight."
"I didn't start it!! Please, this won't ever happen again. I can prove it to you. I'll be an even better Senator than before!! I swear this will never happen again. I swear it on the river Styx!!" I pleaded.
Some people gasped, some started to laugh after a few seconds, but others, like Jason, just starred.
"Terra, look what you've done. We can't risk this again. I have to lower your rank." He gestured to all around him.
The explosion had been a lot more destructive than I had thought. There was a handful of demigods severely injured, being medicated immediately and carried to the infirmary. Others were minorly injured and were being helped to the infirmary by the others who had survived. I let another tear streak down my face.
"Wait, I started this, don't blame it on her." Jason tried to say, but the "Praetor" just looked at him with a smile.
"Stop trying to be responsible, Jason. I saw her start it. You're known for your loyalty and responsibility. We know you wouldn't have fought back only if she had started it. And besides, Terra is known for her jokes, she was a very helpful Senator. The best one I've ever met, and she hasn't even been a centurion. But can't we all agree that we've seen Terra's aggressive side, or her joking side. She can't be trusted with such a high responsibility anyway." He explained.
I couldn't believe this was happening. I looked at Jason, and left. I got a running start and jumped of the building. I tucked and rolled, making it to where I didn't break any bones. I kept running, I didn't want to look back. People stepped out of my way and gasped, others just starred so I had to move around them. I looked back to see what they were gasping about. I had been freezing the ground as I ran. I didn't care. Why did he do this to me? Why did Jason have to pick on me about my family? He knew that was a sensitive subject to me.
I ran and ran and ran until I finally came to that garden that had been in my first dream. I sat down on the same bench and cried. I lost track of time, but it was like, 20 minutes before I heard footsteps walking towards me. I stopped crying and sat up straight, trying to look like I hadn't been crying for the past 20 minutes.
"Terra? It's me, Octavian." He walked in holding something small in his hand.
"Yeah, I'm here." I said.
He walked in and sat down next to me. He placed the thing he was holding in my hand, it was my Probatio badge. "You dropped this on your way out. Thought I'd give it to you after you had calmed down a bit."
"Thanks." I starred at it for a while. "I hate Jason so much."
"Yeah, he's annoying. Why do you hate him so much? What did he do to you? Well.....before this." He asked.
"I-I don't know, we never really hit it off very well. He was the first person I met when I came to Camp and we were pretty good, that's how come Jason knows about my past and I know his. But I guess afterwards, our personalities started to clash and we just started resenting each other. Trying to show who the better person was. I really wish I knew why I hated him so much, it would have stopped this from happening."
"You know, sometimes you hate someone because they remind you about what you don't like about yourself. Does that sound like it might be the case?" Octavian said.
"I don't know let's see. Uhh, I don't like that I'm short."
"No, Jason's tall."
"I don't like how my mom claimed me while I was having my rank lowered."
"Nope."
"I don't like that my mother is Khione."
"Nuh-uh."
"I don't like that my father abandoned me."
"Probably not."
"I-I don't like how I failed to save my sister from my father giving her up for adoption when I promised I'd always be there for her like a big sister is supposed to."
Octavian didn't say anything, so I moved on. "I don't like how people don't laugh at my humor-"
"That's it!" Octavian said.
"Wait what? Because people don't think I'm funny? I thought Jason didn't have a sense of humor." I said really confused.
"No! I meant what you said earlier. About how you couldn't save your sister." He explained.
"What? Jason didn't promise his sister that, she promised him that. If your going off of that, wouldn't I be mad at his sister?" I said.
"No, no, no. Jason's sister promised that she would save him, or something like that. And you promised that to your sister. So you would be like Jason's sister and Jason would be like your sister. You failed to keep your father from giving her up, as I recall. And didn't you say when you were yelling at him. That she had failed to save him from his mother giving him up?"
"Uh-huh." I confirmed.
"So, your mad at Jason because he reminds you of your sister, you failed to save your sister. Jason reminds you of what you failed to do in life." Octavian concluded.
"Whoa. That's deep." I said. "It sound very intricate, like I would have thought about that before and that's why I hate him, but it makes sense. I guess I unknowingly hate him because of that."
"Ha ha! Another point for the augur!!" he pumped his fist.
I sighed. "Oh Octavian, what am I ever gonna do with you?"
"You could....thank me."
"Nah, I'm good."
"Aww. Come on!! Fine then. How about a kiss? Right here, right on my cheek." He poked his right cheek.
"Oh please, Octavian. Stop acting like your five." I said shaking my head.
"Aww. Come on!!! Please, pretty please? Please!!!!"
"No, Octavian, I'm not kissing you." I said laughing.
"Pwetty pwease." He said like a two-year-old.
"Oh my gosh, Octavian. Fine." I kissed my hand and patted his face. "There."
"Hey! That's cheating!"
"No it's not. Now that's all your getting out of me, so stop begging."
"You're a meanie." He said in a fake pouty voice. I laughed.
Things started to dissolve. Finally I was waking up! That dream totally shook me. I hate Jason? That's great. That's just great. I could feel myself waking up, and then my eyes shot open to the dim sewer. Jason was still awake, but Leo wasn't. He was still asleep and holding my hand.
"Hey, you okay Terra?" Jason asked.
The last person I wanted to ask if I was okay after that dream was him. "Yeah, I'm fine." I said kind of harshly, but not on purpose.
"You sure? Bad dream?" He asked.
"Terrible." I stated.
