01. Eggos
Becca stood behind Ben as he ordered the family the sandwiches from the place called Delmar's. She had never been in a place like this let alone in a bustling city like Queens. The young teenager was showing signs of being overwhelmed, and Ben knew it.
"Sofia? What do you like to eat?" Ben asks the young girl, "Is there anything you like?" He adds, wanting to engage the girl to take her thoughts on something else other than her surroundings.
Becca snaps out of her thoughts, looking up at the uncle, "i- I don't know what i like.." She murmurs, ashamed of herself for not knowing what she likes on a sandwich. Something a normal child would know from the age of six. Becca didn't know. She couldn't for the life of her remember what her mother would make her as a child. But something stuck out in her mind at that moment. So she looked back at Ben, "I like turkey.. and.. cheese?" She tells him.
Peter watches Becca closely, pushing his glasses on his face, "You know what kind of cheese? And bread?" He asks curiously, wanting to help her adjust in the atmosphere she has clearly never been apart of.
Becca hesitates, not realizing there were choices of cheese and breads. She never had choices before. Not after she was taken, she was grateful for the small portions of food she was given in the Red Room, then when she was free of them, she was on the run with her Papa, scrounging up what they could fine. She was lucky if she would eat half a full meal a day. Then she was with her Mama again, but it didn't last long.
She hesitates, "I- no.. i'm sorry." She says quietly, her hands starting to shake, thinking they'll be mad at her for not knowing what she likes in food preferences. But gentle hands rest on her shoulders. Her head snaps up to see May and Ben looking at her with kind eyes. Eyes she expected to be filled with frustration and disappointment.
"There's no need to be sorry. None at all." Ben says, reassuring her as best he can, "We'll get you lots of turkey with white bread and we'll experiment with cheese another time. Okay?"
Becca nods slowly, a small smile, "That sounds nice.." She responds quietly as Peter and May begin to talk to the shop keeper Becca learns is named Mr Delmar.
The Parker's and Becca sat on the couch as the tv drowned out the silence as they ate their sandwiches. She liked the choice Ben made for her, she liked the uncle. She liked all three of the Parker's, but she felt closer already with Ben. Like he was a figure in her life that was missing.
"So, tell us about yourself, Sofia." May says, smiling softly at the teenager. She was pinning her long chocolate brown hair behind her with chopsticks as she watched the young girl.
"Well.. I.." Becca starts, not knowing how to tell them the truth but also lies about herself. To the Parker's, she was born in Russia and rescued by her Uncle Steve and adopted by him. "Um.. I was born in Saint Petersburg. I remember feeling cold when i was younger. A lot of the time actually i was cold." She tells them, "I remember being told i was born on Thanksgiving." She adds, smiling softly.
Peter smiles, "I bet your parents were thankful for you then." He teases, causing the girl to blush as she nods in agreement. Flashes of her memories of before she was taken appear in her mind. Her Mama's bright smile, Uncle Howie messing with her hair, Aunt Peggy's loving gaze and melodic voice that always soothed her. She wished that she wasn't taken. That she had lived her life like she was meant to.
"It was only my mother, but yes. She always told me that she was thankful for me, that i was her gift that my Papa gave her before he was taken from us." Becca responds shyly, "I met my father years after i was taken from my home." She says, "He wasn't the same man my Mama had married."
May nods slowly, not fully realizing that the teenage girl sitting beside her had been through such a hard life in the short amount of time she had been alive, "Are you two in touch? Your parents and yourself?" She asks.
Becca nods, fiddling with the edge of her shirt, smiling at her socks, Buddy had gifted her a whole new wardrobe, which included many outfits that consisted of red, white and blue. And also the signature red and gold for Iron Man. Her socks were iron man socks at the moment, she was sure that she had more in her drawers. "We are now, we weren't when i was in captivity for obvious reasons." She says, "But we found each other after i got out with the help of Steve." She says, not sure she should call her Uncle Steve her father despite her bring his adopted daughter as her cover.
Peter smiles softly, but Becca notices a hint of sadness behind his eyes. She wants to ask him why he looks sad, but she can't. She knows that a normal person wouldn't pick up on those subtle facial hints and expressions. She can't be her self, not completely.
Ben crumples up his sandwich wrapper, smiling as he stands, "I say we throw on a movie, and have some hot chocolate." He states, "Where are we with the Star Wars movies?" He asks Peter.
Peter grins, sitting up on his part of the couch, "New Hope." He says excitedly, while Becca looks at the three of them when May stands up to prepare the hot chocolate.
"Go get in your jammies then, we'll have a movie night. Peter, you and Ben can work on your homework for tomorrow." May tells her nephew, smiling when she turns to Becca, "You remember where we unpacked your pajamas?" She asks.
Becca nods, smiling softly, "What's a New Hope?" She asks, "And Star Wars?"
Peter gasps, his hand across his heart, "Sofia, my heart. It hurts." He teases dramatically, "Learn, you will." He states, smiling.
Becca furrows her eyebrows, "That's incorrect grammar." She states flatly, earning laughs from everyone in the room. Looking at them confused, "What did i say?" She asks.
Ben chuckles, ruffling her hair, "It's how a character named Yoda speaks in the movies, you'll see." He says, "Go get changed, the cocoa will be waiting when you get back."
Becca nods, shuffling her feet to her new room, smiling at the bed spread, thanking May for getting it, seeing the rose pink color of the comforter and sheets. She opens her drawer, seeing the pajamas she was given by her brother and mother. She was sure that Pepper had picked out some of the outfits as well though. She pulled out a flannel pair of pants, knowing it would be chilly at night. She was finally able to be warm during the fall and winter like she never had to chance before. She pulled out a shirt that didn't look like it belonged to her. It was a deep red, men's henley shirt. Her eyes widen when she realizes who's shirt it is. Her Papa's. It was a shirt he wore when they were on the run. She was positive that it wasn't actually his though, but the same shirt. She smiled softly as she held it close to her body, hugging it as tears pricked her eyes.
When she was changed, she walked out of the bedroom, Peter sliding in behind her to change into his own pajamas. She was holding a Captain America blanket that she found in her suitcase, she smiled as it had her uncle's face on it, as well as her brother's. She had let her hair out of the two dutch braids her Mama had done for her as they were flying from Clint's home to Queens.
May smiles, her hair still in chopsticks but she was in a baggy shirt —Ben's— and flannel pants like Becca had on along with her glasses. "Cozy?" She asks the teenager.
Becca nods, smiling slightly, "Yes." She replies, hugging the blanket close to her body as she sits down on the couch, thanking May as the aunt hands her a mug full of hot cocoa.
"Have you had this before?" May asks, holding up her own mug.
Becca nods, smiling softly, "Buddy gave it to me a few weeks ago. It was delicious." She says.
"Buddy?" May asks curiously.
Becca nods, "Tony." She explains a bit more.
"Stark?" Peter asks suddenly as he enters the living room. He's carrying multiple books that look heavy as he sets them on the dining table. Ben walks out shortly after, he sets up the movie and then sits down beside Peter at the table, starting to help him with his homework as the girls sit on the couch to watch the movie.
Becca nods, "Yes, why?"
The three Parker's stare at the young girl in disbelief, "No reason.." Peter trails off sheepishly.
Becca pulls her blanket around her shoulders as she sits on the fire escape connected to the window of her and Peter's bedroom. Closing her eyes as she lets the night breeze hit her. Her burner phone vibrating suddenly pulls her out of her thoughts. Grinning, she takes her burner phone, answering it.
"Papa?" She says gleefully.
"Hello svetti." My light Bucky Barnes says, "Did you move into your new home?" He asks.
Becca nods though she knows her Papa can't see her, "Yeah, the family is really nice. They have a nephew who's my age.. well looks. You know what i mean, Papa."
The girl hears her Papa chuckle over her words, "I miss you, i want you to know that." He tells her, "But i'm glad you're safe, finally living the life you were meant to live. No fighting, no pain, no constant fear of death looming over you."
"That is nice. But i miss Mama, i miss you. I just want to come home." Becca says, her voice breaking at the end as tears begin to stream down her cheeks, "I want to be back home, Upstate with Uncle Howie, Mr. Jarvis, Aunt Peggy and Mama. I want to go back to then, when everything was good and normal.. I want to protect my younger self from being kidnapped." She sobs out, the loss finally hitting her after everything.
"Svetti.. I know.. If i could give you that, i would." Bucky says softly, "I want that for you and for your Ma." He tells her. Becca could hear shuffling from the other line, "That's all i wanted from the moment i pledged my life to your Ma, was to give her the life she deserved. And i failed."
"Papa, no.." She mumbles, "Mama doesn't think that.. Not at all." Becca says, "She thanks you everyday for loving her despite millions of miles apart from each other. Knowing you're alive and not in Hydra's grasp is enough to get her through the day."
"Thank you, Svetti." Bucky murmurs to his precious daughter, "I need to go, but i love you, so much. Your Ma as well. You two are my reason for living. Remember that."
Becca sets down the burner phone as she looks up at the sky, seeing the stars glitter the night sky like millions of diamonds. Smiling softly as she remembers her Mama telling her about how she knew that her Papa loved her.
"We were counting the stars." Becca murmurs allowed.
"Mind if i count with you?" Peter asks, jolting the girl, "Sorry, sorry." He says quickly to try and calm her down.
Becca gets her breathing under control, smiling softly, "You can count with me." She says, scooting over on the metal bench of the fire escape, "I like company."
"So why do you count stars?" Peter asks curiously.
"My parents fell in love while counting the stars. When they were apart, they'd look up at the sky and feel connected." Becca explains, "They picked my name under the stars, comforted each other under the glow of the moon. The stars are their safe haven. And i want them to be mine as well."
Peter nods, looking up at the sky, "It is pretty." He agrees, "I've never been into astrology much, but you can't say that they're not peaceful."
Becca nods slowly, "The stars were my safe haven in Russia.. My comfort when i was at my lowest point."
The teenage boy hesitates, "You've been through a lot to only just now be living a normal life.. does that feel odd to you?"
"Extremely. I feel as if i don't belong." Becca answers, "My life doesn't consist of homework and school like yours does." She says, "My life is full of fighting to survive.. never having a quiet moment with my parents.." She mumbles, tears well her crystal blue eyes, "I miss them so much."
Peter hesitates, his head resting against the brick wall of the apartment, his eyes closed, "I miss mine too."
Becca looks over, "What happened to your parents?"
"They died in a plane crash when i was five." He says quietly, "I was dropped off at my Aunt and Uncle's place for the week, it turned into being my permanent residency.."
"I'm so sorry." Becca says quietly.
Peter shakes his head, "It was almost twelve years ago.." He mutters, "I'll never be over it, but i've moved on. It's all you can do. Or else you'll just want to never leave your bed, ever. But life still goes on. You still have a part to play in your life and in others."
Becca smiles weakly, nodding, "Yeah.." She mumbles, remembering what her Papa had just told her over the burner phone.
"You two are my reason for living. Remember that."
"It's cold out here, lets go sneak some eggos and climb into bed." Peter states as he opens the window, climbing back inside his and Becca's shared, bedroom.
Becca giggles, "What are eggos?" She asks, following him into the bedroom.
"Oh grasshopper, you have lots to learn." Peter says as he shuffles his feet across the floor, "Eggos are amazing tiny pieces of heaven." He tells her as he walks back with the box of eggos in his hand.
Becca sits down on her bed, moving the makeshift curtain out of the way as she crawls into bed, smiling at the warmth of her blankets and the softness of her bed. Only a few times has she felt something this soft. And it was always at the Tower, where Buddy had paid and furnished everything to his standards. Which were pretty high. Peter climbs onto his top bunk, lowering his arm over the railing to give Becca an eggo.
The teenager eyes the round waffle looking thing as she takes it into her hand, "It's cold, are they meant to be eaten cold?"
"Not normally." Peter mumbles through a mouth full of eggo, making Becca giggle more, "You toast them and-" Peter kisses his fingers then tosses his hand in the air slightly, "-They're amazing." He says. "These ones are the chocolate chip ones. The cinnamon toast stick ones are better though, but nothing beats the classic three. Plain, chocolate chip and blueberry."
"Blueberry?" Becca asks, knowing that when she wakes up in the morning that she'll text Buddy about it, knowing one of his favorite snacks is blueberries.
"I like those when i'm in a healthy mood." Peter informs the girl, "Well?"
Becca takes a bite out of the cold eggo, smiling slightly, "It's tasty." She mumbles, "But i think i'd like it warm."
