Chapter 15

I rubbed my arm subconsciously as I was lead back to my room. I had three tests today and my arm was aching a little from all the needles. Dr. Samuels was at another facility today so I had a different doctor this time. He wasn't as gentle.

As the door closed behind me I let out an exhausted sigh. "I never knew sitting in a chair day after day could get so tiring."

Dylan sat up on his bed and smiled comfortingly. "All those chemicals must put a lot of strain on your system."

I smiled. "Sorry. I guess I shouldn't be complaining. You go through a lot more than I do."

"No, it's okay. I understand. Yours is more dangerous anyways." His smile dropped and he sighed lightly. "I wonder how long we'll be here..."

I came and sat next to him. "I don't know..." I layed my head on his shoulder and closed my eyes. "But, as long as we have each other we'll be fine."

He nodded and I put my arms around his waist. "Cheer up. Dr. Samuels said that all the scientists are going to a meeting next week about an important formula or something and won't be back for a few days."

"How is that something to be cheerful over?" He asked quizzically.

"Well, for one, we won't have to go through any tests during that time." I said. "We can spend the whole day together."

His eyes lit up with understanding and he smiled. I smiled back and pulled him into my lap. "See? Cheer up?"

He leaned back against me and nodded. "Yeah."

He was warmer than usual which meant that he'd finally been allowed to shower. His hair was damp against my shoulder and his skin was soft. He was breathing slowly and I could tell he was beginning to fall asleep.

I stroked his hair with a loving hand as I too began to drift off. It was one of the rare times I could ever consider it peaceful in this place...

Suddenly we both jumped at the sound of the lock being unlock and the door swinging open. Dylan scrambled up as Dr. Gibbs walked in. He rolled his eyes at us and Dylan bowed his head. I stood behind Dylan and held his hand for courage.

"Let's go. We have work to do." Dr. Gibbs said to Dylan.

I held him back. "What do you mean? He's already done enough for a day."

His eyes flickered towards me and I saw anger in them. "Keep unneeded opinions to yourself." He said. "Let's go, Dylan."

He began to exit the room and Dylan's face dropped. I didn't let go of his hand as he began walking towards the door. "Dylan..."

He made sure Dr. Gibbs wasn't looking and pecked my cheek. "I'll be okay. Don't worry about me."

I hesitated but, let go of his hand and he left the room. As the door closed I sat back down on the bed slowly, my hands resting in my lap. "Stay safe..." I murmured.

The lock clicked and I stood up, beginning to pace the room. Something was off. Dylan was never called out during the evening. He was always back before me and we were alone the rest of the day. Dr. Gibbs was up to something. I was sure of it.

I lost track of how many times I walked from one end of the tiny room to the other. Time passed with a crawl and I wondered how late it had gotten. I prayed Dr. Gibbs wouldn't keep Dylan overnight.

After walking back and forth through the room for an eternity the door open. I turned quickly. "Dyl-" My relief disappeared and I frowned.

The guard stood there. "Dr. Gibbs has asked for you." He said.

I frowned but, followed him from the room. "Where are we going?" I asked. He didn't reply and my nervousness grew.

We entered a dim lit room and I saw Dr. Gibbs standing near a glass window. He turned towards me and a smile appeared on his face. It wasn't a kind smile though. It was filled with something darker.

"Hello, Jason." He said. "You're just in time." He gestured to the window. "Come. Take a look."

I hesitated before I stepped closer and stood next to him. He, again, gestured to the window. I shifted my eyes away from Dr. Gibbs and through the window. My heart beat sped up and my hands clenched.

Dylan was strapped in a chair with a machine hooked up to his arm. I glanced at Dr. Gibbs. "What are you doing to him?"

"Oh, nothing harmful. His health is entirely safe." He looked over at Dylan. "It's just... a little truth serum."

I frowned. "What for?"

He shrugged, smiling lightly. "You'll see." He pressed a button on a set of controls and said, "Proceed."

There was a click and I could suddenly hear what was going on in the other room. A doctor walked over to Dylan and started asking questions. "First name?"

"Dylan."

"Age?"

"Sixteen."

I was almost scared with how much Dylan was acting like a robot. His eyes looked absent. Almost like he didn't have a soul anymore.

"How long have you known the boy known as Jason?"

"Almost a year and a half."

"When you met him did you consider him your brother?"

"No."

The doctor scribbled something on a piece of paper. "Why is that?"

"We're not related."

That answer stung my heart a little. Not related? What does that mean?

"Do you think he cares for you?"

"Yes."

"Do you think he loves you?"

"Yes."

I heard Dr. Gibbs scoff and I glared at him. He didn't look at me and I clenched my teeth. So what if I loved him? It's not like I'm the only one who loves people.

"When did you become a couple and how?"

"A few months after I was adopted by Jason's family. I told him on the way home from school."

"When you told him was it a strong love on your part?"

Dylan took a second to answer but, when he did, it shocked me to my core. "No."

I leaned forward, using the window sill for support. "Dylan...?"

"How strong were your feelings at the time?"

"I didn't have any feelings."

I felt as though my legs at turned to jelly. I stepped back. "This is... There is no way Dylan would say that..." I shook my head. "I want to go back to the room."

The smile vanished from Dr. Gibbs face and he said, "Guard."

The guard who'd brought me here grabbed my arms and pushed me back towards the window. Dr. Gibbs turned back to watching Dylan. "You'll stay right here and watch."

I didn't want to watch. I didn't want to hear any more. I didn't think I could take it.

"Then why did you tell him that you had feelings for him? Explain in detail."

"I knew about my parents. That my life was a test." His eyes moved down to his lap. "I wanted to turn the tables."

"How does your lie to Jason 'turn the tables'?"

"I wasn't supposed to fall in love. It wasn't a part of the test. By telling Jason that I loved him... I changed the plans."

My eyes burned and I blinked back tears. "This is a lie... Y-you're making him say that..."

"Technically, yes. He'd never have said it without the truth serum." Dr. Gibbs said with a smile. He turned to me. "How much do you love him now?"

I looked back at Dylan and my heart began to break into a million pieces from just seeing his face. He was beging unstrapped from the chair and as I watched he brushed some hair out of his face and stood up.

The guard held me up as I began to feel weak. "That's..."

Suddenly, the door to the room next door opened and Dylan stepped out. His eyes settled on me for a second before they darted to the window and back to me. "Jason... Did you..."

I couldn't meet his eyes and I pulled away from the guard, heading for the door. Dylan grabbed my hand but, I yanked it away immediately. Dylan looked shocked. "Jason..."

I stood with my back to him for a moment before I shook my head again and ran out the door. The guard hurried to catch up with me but, I had already made my way back to Dr. Samuels' lab.

I told the guard I wanted to sleep in the lab. He radioed to someone and got the okay. He said he'd be outside the door and left the room.

I curled up in the corner and bit my lip as tears dripped from my chin to my knees. "'Turn the tables'...?"

I reached up and felt my cheek where Dylan had kissed it only hours before. Then I broke down and began to sob quietly.

Was that just another lie too...?
